To activate the Microsoft 365 offer that came with your HP laptop, finish Windows setup, connect to the internet, open HP Support Assistant, then launch a pre-installed Office app such as Word or Excel. Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to own the entitlement and complete the on-screen redemption. If HP supplied a card or emailed product key instead, redeem it at Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup. The offer may be a trial or a fixed-term subscription, and not every HP model or sales region includes one.
What the HP bundle actually includes
“Microsoft 365 included” is not a single universal HP package. Depending on the laptop model, country or region, retailer and promotion, HP may include a digital Microsoft 365 entitlement, a printed or emailed product-key card, a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, or a longer fixed-term subscription such as one year. Some laptops include no Microsoft 365 offer at all. Check the laptop’s listing, invoice, packaging and welcome email for the exact term before assuming that a subscription is present.
A bundled offer is normally attached to one Microsoft account during redemption. Once it has been added, that account is the one Microsoft uses to verify activation, permit installation on another device where the subscription allows it, and provide reinstall and subscription-management options. The entitlement is not necessarily a permanent copy of Office, and a trial or fixed-term subscription can expire.

- Complete the Windows first-run setup on the HP laptop.
- Connect to a reliable internet connection and install any pending Windows updates.
- Have the Microsoft account you want to keep as the subscription owner ready. If you do not have one, you can create one during redemption.
- Keep the HP purchase paperwork, the box insert and any email containing an offer or product key.
- Do not buy a separate subscription until you have checked HP Support Assistant, the Microsoft Store and the pre-installed Office apps for an included-device offer.
Using the intended Microsoft account at the beginning avoids the most common activation problem: redeeming on one account and then opening Word or Excel while signed in to another.

Activate a digital HP entitlement
A digital entitlement does not require a card or a printed key. Microsoft can transmit the digital product key to the PC and associate the offer with the Microsoft account you use during the first-run Office flow. In that situation, there is no physical key to find.
- Finish Windows setup. Choose your region, keyboard and network, and reach the Windows desktop.
- Open HP Support Assistant. On supported new HP laptops, HP describes this app as the first stop for registration, updates and redemption guidance. Sign in or follow the device-registration prompts if the app requests them.
- Look for the Microsoft 365 offer. The wording varies by model. It may appear as a redemption notice, an included subscription or a device offer. If nothing appears, also check the Microsoft Store and the Office apps before concluding that the laptop has no entitlement.
- Launch a pre-installed Office app. Open Word, Excel, Outlook or another Office application from the Start menu. The first-run screen can offer a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, a purchase, an option to add a subscription, or redemption of an included offer.
- Choose the included offer. Select the redeem, activate or add-subscription option rather than starting a different paid plan unless you have deliberately chosen to buy one.
- Sign in to the correct Microsoft account. Use the account that should own the subscription. Microsoft uses this sign-in to verify the license and to make the product available for later installation or reinstallation.
- Accept the prompts and finish setup. Allow the entitlement to be added to the account. Keep the laptop online until the confirmation screen appears.
- Confirm activation. In Word or Excel, open File and then Account. The product information should show the signed-in account and a licensed Microsoft 365 product, rather than an unlicensed-product warning.
If the first Office screen offers only a purchase and no included offer, do not immediately pay. The offer may be shown in HP Support Assistant or the Microsoft Store, or the laptop may not be eligible for the promotion.
Redeem a printed or emailed product key
Some HP sales packages provide a card, an insert or an email containing a Microsoft 365 product key. Redeeming the key is a one-time process that adds the product to a Microsoft account; it does not create a reusable key that can be entered repeatedly.

- Locate the key. Check the card inside the box, the purchase email and documents supplied by the retailer. Treat the key as confidential; anyone who redeems it first can associate it with their account.
- Open the Microsoft redemption page. Go to Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup.
- Sign in or create an account. Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to retain as the subscription owner. If you create a new account, record its sign-in details before leaving the page.
- Enter the key. Type the characters exactly as printed. If the page asks for the key without hyphens, omit the hyphens; otherwise follow the field’s formatting. Do not add spaces or substitute similar-looking characters.
- Complete the prompts. Confirm the country or region and accept the terms when requested. The page should show the product being added to your account.
- Install Office. After redemption, open the Microsoft account page, choose the option to install Microsoft 365 apps, download the installer and run it.
- Verify the license in an app. Open Word or Excel, sign in with the same account used for redemption, and check File → Account for the licensed-product status.
Digital entitlement or product key: which path applies?

A key that says it has already been used may be perfectly valid. It usually means the key was redeemed earlier, perhaps during an attempted setup, and is now tied to an account. Search your Microsoft accounts rather than entering the key repeatedly.

Use the included subscription with an existing Microsoft account
Yes. You can normally use an existing Microsoft account, and doing so is preferable if that account already contains your Microsoft 365 history, OneDrive files or other Microsoft purchases. Sign in with it during the Office activation flow or on the key-redemption page. The included offer is then associated with that account, subject to the offer’s terms and eligibility.
Do not switch accounts between stages. If Windows setup used one account, HP Support Assistant another and Word a third, the offer may appear to be missing even though it was successfully redeemed. In Word or Excel, select the account icon and inspect the signed-in address; compare it with the account shown at account.microsoft.com.
If you already pay for Microsoft 365, read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting the bundled offer. Microsoft may present an option to add the offer to an existing subscription, while a separate one-time Office license follows different terms. Do not assume that two subscriptions automatically merge or extend each other; the account page should show the resulting product and end date.
Confirm that activation worked
Opening an Office app is not enough by itself because pre-installed Office can run in a limited or trial state. Use these checks:

- Open Word or Excel and choose File → Account.
- Confirm that the account address is the one used for redemption.
- Look for a licensed Microsoft 365 product name and a subscription-management link, rather than “Unlicensed Product,” “Activation Required” or a purchase prompt.
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com and open the services or subscriptions area to check the product and its term.
- Close and reopen an Office app while connected to the internet so it can refresh the license status.
After a successful redemption, the desktop apps can be installed again from the Microsoft account page if you reset the laptop or need Office on another permitted device. Reinstallation rights come from the account and subscription terms, not from keeping a second copy of the product key.
Troubleshoot the most common activation failures
The offer is not shown anywhere
First verify the laptop’s exact model, the country in which it was purchased, the retailer or sales channel and the documents supplied with it. HP offers are not universal across all laptops or markets. An offer advertised for one configuration may not apply to a visually similar model.
Next, open HP Support Assistant and the Microsoft Store, install available updates, and launch each pre-installed Office app once. If the paperwork promises Microsoft 365 but no redemption path appears, contact HP support with the serial number, product number and proof of purchase. The entitlement may be tied to the device and require HP to correct the offer.

In Word or Excel, sign out and sign back in with the account used during the original redemption. A support case can show the offer as active on one account while the app is signed in to another. Check the account at account.microsoft.com, then reopen Office while online.

If the account is correct, update Office and Windows, restart the laptop and test again. If activation still fails, use Microsoft’s guided support from the activation page. For an entitlement that was supposed to come with the HP device, HP support can verify whether the offer is attached to the machine.
The product key is rejected
- Return to Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup rather than entering the key inside an unrelated Office dialog.
- Recheck characters that are easy to confuse, and follow the page’s instruction about hyphens.
- Confirm that the card is for Microsoft 365 or Office and was purchased for your country or region.
- If the page says the key was already used, stop trying to redeem it and sign in to the account that originally claimed it.
The laptop was reset or the app was removed
A reset does not normally erase a redeemed entitlement from the Microsoft account. Reinstall the desktop apps from the account page, then sign in with the owning account. A reset performed before redemption can remove the local first-run offer, so check the original HP paperwork and contact HP support if the device was sold with an entitlement that no longer appears.
Activation worked, then stopped
Check the subscription term and account status first. A one-month Family trial and a fixed-term bundle such as one year have an end date. A changed password, an account switch in Office, extended offline use or an expired subscription can also trigger an activation prompt. Reconnect to the internet, sign in to the owning account and review the product status before purchasing anything.

- Start a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, if the offer is available to your account.
- Buy Microsoft 365 as a paid subscription.
- Add the entitlement to an existing subscription when Microsoft offers that option.
- Redeem a new product-key card, such as a Microsoft 365 Personal one-year key, through the standard setup page.
These choices are alternatives, not proof that the original HP offer was lifetime access. Check the exact end date, edition, device limits, renewal behavior and regional terms shown in your Microsoft account before selecting a continuation method.
Eligibility, term and regional checks
When an HP laptop and its advertising do not agree, compare four details:
- Model and configuration: confirm the full product number, not just the family name.
- Purchase region: Microsoft 365 offers and redemption pages can vary by country.
- Sales channel and date: retailer promotions may apply only to certain inventories or promotion periods.
- Offer wording: distinguish a one-month trial, a fixed-term subscription, a one-time Office license and a generic “Office-ready” statement.
Keep screenshots or copies of the listing and invoice if an advertised benefit is missing. HP support can use those details, together with the device serial number, to determine whether an entitlement was supplied.
