Sign in to the Microsoft account that should own the game, open Microsoft’s official Redeem code flow, enter or paste the code, and review the item before confirming. After redemption, install or launch the title from the library for the code’s destination: the relevant Xbox console library or install area, or My Library in Microsoft Store on Windows. If it is missing, check the account used during redemption, review redeemed-code or order history, and verify that you are looking in the correct platform storefront.
What an Xbox code can provide
“Xbox code” is used for several different products. Before entering anything, identify what you have because the result in your account depends on the code type.
- Game download code: adds a license for a specific digital game or other content to the account that redeems it.
- Gift card or account-balance code: adds monetary balance to the Microsoft account. It does not automatically place a particular game in your library; you use the balance to make a separate purchase.
- Subscription code: adds the stated subscription time or benefit to the account, subject to that code’s terms.
- Token or promotional code: supplies whatever content or benefit is described with the token.
Microsoft Support describes redemption as account-based. The account signed in when the transaction is completed is the account to check later. A code’s platform and storefront also matter. Do not assume that every Xbox-branded download code includes a Windows copy, or that a Windows entitlement installs on an Xbox console. Cross-platform rights depend on the specific product and offer.

Before redeeming: prepare the right account and destination
Choose the Microsoft account that should own the entitlement
Sign in to the personal Microsoft account intended to keep the game permanently. If several people use the same console or computer, verify the email address and profile before submitting the code. Redeeming while signed in to the wrong account can leave the entitlement attached to that account; changing profiles later does not make the ownership appear in another account’s library.
On a shared Windows computer, Microsoft Store and the browser can be signed in to different accounts. On Xbox, the active console profile can also differ from the account open in a browser. Check the full account address wherever the redemption page displays it, not just a gamertag or display name.
Identify where you plan to play
Look at the product description, packaging or message that supplied the code. It may identify an Xbox console edition, a Windows/Microsoft Store edition, or a product that supports more than one destination. If the description is ambiguous, do not rely on the word “Xbox” alone. Search the library associated with the platform named by the code.
If you intend to play on both console and PC, verify that the offer explicitly names both destinations. An Xbox label alone is not proof of a Windows entitlement, and an item listed in Microsoft Store is not proof of an Xbox-console license.
Have the code ready
Codes are normally a sequence of letters and numbers. Copy and paste when possible, or type carefully while distinguishing characters such as zero and the letter O. Keep the original receipt or message until the item appears in the correct account. It can be needed if the code is rejected or was sold for the wrong product.
Keep an unused code private. Do not place the complete sequence in a public post or send it to an unverified person claiming to provide support. Treat the code and proof of purchase as one set of records until redemption is confirmed.
How do I redeem an Xbox game code?
The most consistent method is Microsoft’s web redemption flow. The labels can change slightly as Microsoft updates its sites, but the required sequence is sign-in, code entry, review and confirmation.

- Open Microsoft’s official code-redemption page. Start from Microsoft or Xbox support rather than a third-party form so that you are entering the code into the legitimate Microsoft account service.
- Select Redeem code and sign in. Use the account that should receive the game. If a browser has several Microsoft sessions open, confirm the displayed account before continuing.
- Enter or paste the code value. Remove accidental spaces at the beginning or end. Do not share the complete code in a support forum or with another person; whoever redeems a valid unused code may claim its entitlement.
- Review the result shown by Microsoft. Check the product name, account and any platform or region wording. A gift card, subscription or token will show a different result from a game download.
- Confirm redemption. Submit only after the item and account are correct. A successful confirmation associates the entitlement with the signed-in account.
- Keep the confirmation and receipt. You may need the transaction information when checking order history or contacting the retailer.
If Microsoft reports an error instead of showing a confirmation, do not repeatedly submit the code while guessing. Record the exact message and use Microsoft’s redemption help for that error. Different messages can indicate different account, code, platform or eligibility conditions, and there is no single fix that applies to every code.
A successful redemption does not necessarily begin an installation automatically. It records the entitlement; installation is a separate step in the destination library. For a balance code, redemption records funds instead, so you must complete a normal store purchase before a game is added to your owned titles.
Where do I find my Xbox game after I redeem the code?
Look in the library for the destination named by the code. Microsoft’s download instructions specifically use My Library for Microsoft Store downloads, while Xbox installation uses the game library or install area on the applicable console or PC.
Xbox console
- Sign in on the Xbox console with the same Microsoft account used for redemption.
- Open the console’s game library or owned-games area and search for the title.
- Select the game and choose the available install option. If the title is already installed, launch it from the console’s games list.
The exact menu wording and placement can vary by console software version and by whether the item is a game, add-on or subscription benefit. The important checks are the active account and the console library associated with that account.

A subscription benefit may be presented through the service’s game catalog instead of as a separately purchased title. The product description and the redemption confirmation determine which behavior to expect.
Windows PC through Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store on the Windows PC.
- Select My Library.
- Find the redeemed title in the list of Microsoft Store downloads.
- Choose the install control for the title, if the PC edition is included and compatible with that device.
Microsoft provides separate instructions for console game installation. A title appearing in a Windows Microsoft Store library is not evidence by itself that the same license is available on an Xbox console, and the reverse is also true.
Make sure Microsoft Store itself is signed in to the account that redeemed the code. A browser confirmation under one account does not change the Store account automatically. If the title is not listed, sign out only after recording the account and redemption details, then sign in to the intended Store profile and check My Library again.

Xbox console and Windows PC: which library should you check?

If the code description explicitly supports more than one platform, check each corresponding library while using the same account. If it names only one platform, search that platform first instead of treating an empty library elsewhere as proof that redemption failed.

Why isn’t my redeemed game showing in my library?
Work through these checks in order. They separate an account problem from a platform mismatch without risking a second redemption attempt.
1. Confirm the active Microsoft account
Compare the account identifier shown on the redemption confirmation, the code or order history and the profile currently open in the Xbox console or Microsoft Store. Family members can have similar names or use different email addresses, so check the full account address rather than only a display name.
2. Review redeemed-code or order history
The official Xbox redemption guidance points users to account order history and redeemed-code information. Use those records to determine whether Microsoft recorded the code and which account received it. A recorded redemption with no game in the current profile strongly suggests that you are viewing a different account or destination.
3. Check the correct platform and storefront
Return to the product description and identify whether it is for Xbox console, Windows/Microsoft Store PC, or another destination. Search the matching library. A console-only license may not appear in Microsoft Store My Library, and a Windows-only license may not appear in the console’s owned-games area.

4. Allow for library synchronization
Close and reopen the Microsoft Store or the console library, then make sure the device is online and signed in to the intended account. Search by the complete title rather than relying only on a recently added section. These steps refresh the view without changing the entitlement.
5. Distinguish a missing game from a different code result
If you redeemed a gift card, look for the balance rather than a game. If you redeemed a subscription, check the account’s service or subscription information. If you redeemed a token or add-on, look for the benefit in the product’s associated area. Searching only the standard game list can make a valid redemption look missing.

6. Use Microsoft’s error-specific help
If the redemption record exists but the item remains absent, or if an error appears during redemption, follow Microsoft’s current redemption help and Xbox support path for the exact message. Avoid universal claims about region, expiration or transfer rules: those conditions depend on the code and are not identical for every product.
What if the code says it was already redeemed?
An “already redeemed” message means Microsoft is not treating the code as an unused code for the account currently attempting it. First, check whether you or someone with access to the intended account redeemed it earlier. Review redeemed-code and order history while signed in to that account, then search the appropriate platform library.
If the history shows redemption on another Microsoft account, the entitlement is associated with that account. Do not assume it can be transferred. If you did not authorize the redemption, secure the relevant account and contact Microsoft through its official support route; provide the receipt and the exact error rather than publishing the code.
Do not keep trying the same code from multiple accounts. Repeated attempts do not move an entitlement and can make it harder to identify which account received the original redemption. Record the account used, the date shown in your records and the exact wording of the message for support.
What if I bought the wrong code?
Do not redeem a code for a different platform, edition or product merely to see what happens. Microsoft Support’s guidance is direct: If you bought the wrong code, please contact the retailer.
Keep the receipt, product listing and code packaging available. The retailer controls the sale and can explain its exchange or refund process; Microsoft’s redemption page cannot turn an incorrectly purchased code into the product you intended.
Region, validity and transfer limitations
Code eligibility can depend on the market, product, account and offer terms. The official instructions used for the redemption flow do not establish one universal rule for every region, expiration date or transfer scenario. Treat any region or validity notice displayed during redemption as specific to that code, and follow the support instructions linked to the message.
Likewise, an entitlement added to one Microsoft account should be treated as belonging to that account. Do not promise that support can move it to another account, and do not infer that signing in on a different console or PC changes ownership. You can use the same account on supported devices, but the title still has to include the relevant platform entitlement.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Redeeming while the wrong account is active: verify the account before selecting the final confirmation.
- Searching only one library: match the library to the platform named by the code.
- Confusing balance with a game license: a gift card increases account balance; it does not automatically redeem a specific game.
- Assuming Xbox means every platform: console and Windows rights are product-specific.
- Retrying an error without recording it: capture the exact message and use the corresponding Microsoft help path.
- Discarding proof of purchase: retain the receipt until the entitlement is visible and installable.
- Posting the full code publicly: treat an unused code like cash and keep it private.

- Does the redemption confirmation name the expected product?

- Does the title actually include the platform entitlement you need?
- What exact error appears, if any?
- Was the wrong product purchased? If so, contact the retailer with your proof of purchase.
When to contact Microsoft or the retailer
Use Microsoft’s redemption help or Xbox support when the code fails with an error, the transaction appears in the correct account but the entitlement is not visible, or you need instructions for a current platform-specific message. Include the code type, product name, account identifier (without exposing the full code publicly), redemption date and exact error text.
Contact the retailer when the listing or item supplied was the wrong code. Microsoft explicitly directs customers who bought the wrong code to the retailer. Keep the code private until the retailer tells you what information is required.
The shortest reliable path
Use the Microsoft account that should own the game, redeem the code through the official Redeem code flow, confirm the product shown, and then open the library for the code’s platform. Xbox console titles belong in the console’s game library or install area; Windows Microsoft Store downloads belong in My Library. If the title is absent, account history and platform matching are the first checks, followed by Microsoft’s error-specific support. A wrong purchase is handled by the retailer, not by trying to transfer the entitlement yourself.

What if I bought the wrong Xbox code?
