Redeem a PC game key in the launcher or store named by the code, while signed in to the account that should own the game. After the platform accepts the code, open that same account’s library and confirm that the entitlement is listed. A download button and a successful launch are useful follow-up checks, but the library entitlement is the clearest general proof that redemption succeeded.
What a PC game key actually does
A PC game key is an alphanumeric code that grants a license, game entitlement, downloadable content (DLC), in-game currency, or another digital item through a specific platform. The code is not automatically interchangeable between stores. A key intended for Steam normally has to be redeemed by Steam; a code intended for an EA Account, Ubisoft account, or Microsoft account follows that service’s own redemption flow.
Read the code’s instructions before entering anything. They normally identify the storefront, publisher account, region, edition, and any deadline. A code can be for a base game, an expansion, a preorder bonus, currency, or a promotional discount rather than a full game license. A discount code is generally entered during checkout and does not add a game to your library.

Redemption also permanently associates the entitlement with the account you use. If you activate a code on the wrong account, moving it later may not be possible. Check the displayed email address, profile name, and region before confirming.

Before you redeem: five checks that prevent most failures
- Identify the platform. Look for wording such as Steam, EA app, Ubisoft Connect PC, Xbox, or Microsoft. Do not infer the platform from the game’s title alone.
- Identify the item type. Confirm whether the code is a game, DLC, season pass, currency, preorder item, or promotional discount.
- Check region and language restrictions. A code sold for one country or region may be blocked elsewhere or may not include the language you expect.
- Confirm the account. Sign out of other accounts or verify the active account in the launcher before entering the code.
- Keep proof of purchase. Save the receipt, order number, confirmation email, and a photograph or scan of a printed code. A seller or platform may request this when investigating an already-used or invalid code.
How to redeem a Steam key
Use the Steam desktop client
- Launch the Steam client and sign in to the Steam account that should own the game.
- Open the Games menu.
- Choose Activate a Product on Steam….
- Follow the on-screen instructions, accept the relevant agreement, and enter or paste the key exactly as supplied.
- Review the product name before confirming. If it is not the expected game or edition, stop rather than completing the activation.
Steam’s official activation flow registers a retail key to the Steam account. Steam describes a registered retail key as proof of purchase and ownership for that account.
Redeem through a browser
Steam also supports registering a CD key through a browser. Use Steam’s official account redemption page while signed in to the intended account, then enter the code and confirm the displayed product. The browser route and the client route should produce the same account entitlement; the important detail is using the correct account.
Confirm the Steam entitlement
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Search for the game by its exact title and check that the correct edition is listed.
- Open the game’s library page and look for an available Install button or another ownership state.
- If the code was for DLC, open the game’s properties and inspect the DLC section rather than expecting a separate game tile.
Adding a non-Steam shortcut only creates a shortcut to software installed elsewhere; it does not redeem a Steam license. A key that is not intended for Steam will not create Steam ownership.
How to redeem an EA PC code
Redeem on the EA website
- Go to
ea.com/redeemand sign in to the intended EA Account. - Choose the option for redeeming a PC code.
- Enter the code, select Continue, and review the product and account shown.
- Confirm the redemption only when the product and account are correct.
Redeem in the EA app
- Launch the EA app and sign in to the EA Account that should own the game.
- Open My Library.
- Choose Redeem Code.
- Enter the code and complete the confirmation screens.
EA says the redeemed game appears in the EA Account. Some codes are printed in a purchase-confirmation email, box, or manual, so check those locations if the code is not obvious.
Check whether it is a product code or a promo code
An EA product code adds an entitlement. A promotional discount code is generally applied during checkout and will not create a game in My Library. Use the redemption location specified with the code. Some older titles cannot be redeemed in the EA app and may require the original disc instead.

Confirm the EA entitlement
Return to My Library while signed in to the same EA Account. Search for the title and verify the edition or included content. If the game is listed, the account accepted the entitlement; installation and launch can be checked afterward.
How to redeem a Ubisoft Connect PC key
Enter the code
- Open Ubisoft Connect PC and sign in to the Ubisoft account that should own the game.
- Select your profile in the upper-left corner, or open the Ubisoft Connect overlay.
- Choose Key/Code Activation.
- Enter the code in Activate Product. Some codes also require selecting a product and platform.
- Select Activate and review the confirmation.
Ubisoft warns that repeated failed activation attempts can temporarily block additional attempts. Do not keep guessing characters or trying random platforms; stop and verify the code format, region, and instructions first.
Confirm the Ubisoft entitlement
- Open the Ubisoft Connect PC library under the same account.
- Search for the activated title and verify the product edition.
- Open the game page and choose the download or install option.
- After installation, launch the game through Ubisoft Connect if the title requires that launcher.
A successful activation should place the game in that Ubisoft account’s library. If you activated it on a different Ubisoft account, it will not appear when you sign in to the current one.
How to redeem a Microsoft or Xbox PC game code
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the game entitlement.
- Open Microsoft’s Redeem code flow for Xbox download codes and tokens.
- Paste or type the code without adding spaces that are not part of the code.
- Review the product, account, and region shown on the confirmation screen.
- Confirm the redemption, then check the Microsoft Store or Xbox app associated with that account for the game.
Microsoft uses different redemption paths for games, Office, and Windows product keys. Do not apply Office or Windows instructions to a game code. If you bought the wrong code, Microsoft directs customers to the retailer; separate Xbox error and service-status guidance applies when the service itself is unavailable.
How to tell whether the key worked
Across the major platforms, the strongest general confirmation is an entitlement in the library or account associated with the account used during redemption. A success message alone is less useful if you were signed in to an unexpected account.

- Accepted code: The platform confirms redemption and identifies a product or item.
- Library entitlement: The expected game, edition, DLC, or other item appears in the same account’s library.
- Install option: The platform offers download or installation when the item is currently available.
- Launch check: The installed game starts and reaches its normal sign-in or title screen.
Do not treat launch as a required immediate test for every code. Preorders, add-on content, products with a future release date, and titles with separate hardware or account requirements may not launch on the day you redeem them. For DLC, look inside the base game’s downloadable-content or add-on section; for currency, check the relevant in-game balance after launching.

Why the game is not showing in your library
You are signed in to a different account
This is the most common explanation. Compare the account email or profile identity shown in the launcher with the account used during redemption. Sign out completely, sign back in to the intended account, and search the library again. On Ubisoft Connect PC, a title redeemed on another Ubisoft account will not appear in the current library.
The library needs to refresh
Close and reopen the launcher, then sign in again. For Ubisoft Connect PC, Ubisoft suggests emptying the application cache and restarting when a redeemed game still does not appear. If the entitlement remains missing, contact Ubisoft support with the purchase receipt and redemption details.
You redeemed an add-on, not a separate game
DLC, season passes, preorder bonuses, and currency may be displayed under the base game rather than as a new library tile. Open the base game’s properties or manage-content screen and check the add-on list.
The item has a release date or separate requirement
A preorder entitlement can be registered before the game is downloadable. A code may also require a specific operating system, hardware capability, subscription, or linked publisher account. Check the product description and the platform’s account-linking prompt.

What to do when a code says it was already used
An already-used message means the code has previously been attached to an account. EA notes that a secondhand code may have been redeemed by its original owner and cannot be reused on another player’s account.
- Check every account you control, using the platform’s library search, in case you redeemed it earlier under a different login.
- If the code is in your purchase history, gather the receipt, order number, and the exact error message.
- Contact the retailer first when you purchased the code new. Request a replacement or refund under its digital-code policy.
- Contact the platform’s support team if the seller directs you there or if you need to investigate redemption on the wrong account. EA may request proof of purchase.
Do not publish the full code in a public forum or send it to an unverified helper. Anyone who obtains an unused code can redeem it first.

Expired code
EA says an expired code may not be redeemable. Check the expiry terms supplied with the code and contact the retailer if it was already expired when sold. A platform cannot necessarily extend a seller’s expiration policy.
Invalid code
“Invalid” is not one diagnosis. Ubisoft distinguishes invalid, banned, already-used, and region-invalid errors. Recheck the platform, item type, edition, region, and every character. Characters such as 0, O, 1, and I can be confused when a printed code is unclear; copy and paste from a trusted confirmation email when possible.

A Steam key cannot normally be entered in the EA app, and an Xbox or Microsoft code follows Microsoft’s redemption path. Likewise, a code for DLC may be rejected when entered where a base-game code is expected. Return to the original listing or email and follow its named instructions.

Region restriction
A code sold for another country or region may be blocked or may omit your preferred language. Region eligibility is separate from the game’s technical ability to run on your PC, so verify it before purchase and before repeated redemption attempts.
When a game opens another launcher
Some games require more than one account. An EA game purchased through Steam may still require the EA app and an EA Account. Games bought in the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam. Ubisoft games purchased through the EA app may require linking a Ubisoft account.
- Read the store listing for required launchers before buying or redeeming.
- Install the additional launcher only from its official source.
- When prompted, link the account that should own and play the game.
- After linking, verify the game in both the purchasing store and the publisher launcher where applicable.
Account linking is not the same as license transfer. A link may allow a launcher to authenticate you while the original store continues to hold the purchase.

Ubisoft recommends buying its games directly from Ubisoft or from companies with a digital distribution agreement. It warns that a key from a retailer without such an agreement may be invalid, illegally obtained, or later revoked. This is publisher-specific guidance, not a universal whitelist for every game company.
Before paying, compare the platform, region, language, edition, account-linking requirements, and seller’s remedy for an invalid or expired code. Keep the receipt until the entitlement appears in your library and the game has passed any practical installation check. An unusually low price can reflect a region restriction, a nonstandard edition, a promotional item, or a seller with limited support rather than a better version of the same product.
A practical troubleshooting decision tree
- No redemption page accepts the code: identify the platform named by the seller, then use only that platform’s official redemption route.
- The code is rejected immediately: stop after a careful character check; confirm region, edition, and code type before another attempt.
- The platform confirms success but the game is absent: sign in to the exact account used for redemption, refresh the launcher, and inspect whether the item is DLC or a preorder.
- The code says already used: check your other accounts, then contact the retailer with proof of purchase; platform support may investigate ownership.
- Activation attempts are being blocked: wait rather than continuing guesses. Ubisoft specifically warns that repeated failures can temporarily block further activation.
- The game requires another launcher: complete the account-linking prompt and verify which service holds the license before reinstalling or repurchasing.
What evidence to save for support
- The original receipt or order confirmation, including date and seller.
- A screenshot of the error with the full message visible but the complete unused code hidden.
- The platform, region, edition, and account email used during the attempt.
- The redemption time and any transaction or order number.
- For a physical purchase, a clear photograph of the code card and packaging.
Support agents can distinguish an already-used, expired, banned, region-invalid, and mistyped code more reliably when you provide the exact message instead of describing every failure as “invalid.”
Bottom line: the reliable way to verify a PC key
Use the storefront or publisher named by the key, sign in to the account that should own it, and enter the code through that service’s official flow. Then verify the exact game or item in that same account’s library. Installation and launch are useful additional checks, but they do not replace account and entitlement verification. If redemption fails, stop guessing and classify the problem—wrong platform, wrong account, mistyped, expired, region-restricted, already used, or temporarily blocked—before contacting the seller or platform with proof of purchase.
