Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online membership card on a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 through Nintendo eShop. Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the membership, open the Nintendo Switch Online membership screen, select the download-code option, enter the card’s 16-digit membership code, accept the displayed terms, and review auto-renewal before confirming. You can also redeem the code in a browser if that Nintendo Account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

What you need before entering the code

A membership card is a prepaid Nintendo Switch Online download code. It is not activated by typing every number printed on a receipt or card into a generic gift-card field. Locate the code specifically identified for the Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s Americas instructions describe this as a 16-digit download code.

Check these details before redeeming. A code is normally tied to the country or region printed on the physical card, and Nintendo does not exchange a code bought for one country so it works with an account set to another. Also confirm that the membership tier and account type match what you intend to buy; an existing membership can affect how a newly redeemed plan is applied.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Nintendo Account The account selected in eShop is the account that should receive the membership. Redemption is applied to the selected account; changing users later does not move the membership.
Region The country printed on the card matches the country set for the Nintendo Account and its eShop. Membership codes are region-specific. A foreign code may be rejected or unusable on your account.
Plan Individual or family, and standard Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Different plans may run concurrently rather than merge, and some combinations cannot be redeemed.
Term The card’s stated membership duration. The term determines when the membership expires and when any enabled renewal would occur.
Code source The Nintendo Switch Online membership download code, not another retailer reference number. Receipts and cards can show multiple numbers with different purposes.

The console process below follows Nintendo’s Americas support flow. Menu labels, available plans and payment choices can differ in other countries, but the sequence is substantially the same.

Nintendo Switch Online 12-Month Individual Membership [Digital Code]
  • Enjoy a curated library of 70+ classic Super NES and NES games. You can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or virtually pass the controller, depending on the game.
  • Access a collection of Game Boy games to play anytime, anywhere!
  • In addition to the game data regularly saved to your system, you’ll have online backup. This makes it easy to retrieve your game data if you lose your system or start using a new one.
  • Enhance your online experience with the Nintendo Switch Online app. For example, you can use voice chat with players in compatible games.
  1. Open Nintendo eShop

From the HOME Menu, select Nintendo eShop. Wait for the store to load before selecting a user.

  2. Select the receiving Nintendo Account

Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the membership. Check the account name carefully, especially if several family members use the console. Do not continue until the displayed account is the intended recipient.

  3. Open the Nintendo Switch Online membership area

Inside eShop, open Nintendo Switch Online. Select the option to view or change your membership. This screen shows the plans available to the selected account and provides the membership-management controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Choose the download-code option

Select the option to redeem a download code. Use this membership-code route rather than a general purchase option when you already have a prepaid card.

  5. Enter the 16-digit membership code

Enter the 16-digit Nintendo Switch Online membership download code from the card or retailer receipt. Nintendo disables characters that are not used in prepaid codes, including O, I and Z, on the on-screen keyboard. If a printed character appears ambiguous, compare it with the code field and use the exact membership code shown by the seller.

  6. Accept the displayed terms

Read any terms or notices that appear and accept them only if the account, region and plan are correct. If the screen identifies a different membership than expected, cancel and recheck the card before confirming.

  7. Review auto-renewal settings

Nintendo may ask whether to set a renewal method. Review the selected option and the terms shown on screen. Nintendo’s Americas instructions list a credit card, PayPal or available eShop funds as possible renewal methods, although the choices depend on the country.

    • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC *
    • Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion*
  8. Confirm redemption

Confirm the transaction. Nintendo states that selecting a renewal method does not charge you immediately at redemption; auto-renewal concerns the end of the membership period. Keep the card or receipt until the membership appears in the account and the expiration date is correct.

If the code is accepted, the membership should be associated with the account selected in step 2. If the console reports an error, do not repeatedly guess at the code. Record the exact message and use the troubleshooting process below.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online code online

Nintendo also provides a browser redemption page at https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/. This route is useful when you do not have the console immediately available, but it has an important prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

  1. Open Nintendo’s redemption page

Go to https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ in a browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Sign in to the intended account

Sign in with the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership. Check the account name shown after sign-in. If it is not the correct account, stop and sign in with the proper one before entering the code.

  3. Enter the 16-digit code

Type the Nintendo Switch Online membership download code exactly as printed. Do not substitute a retailer order number or another number from the receipt.

  4. Re-enter your password if requested

Nintendo may ask you to authenticate again. Enter the password for the same Nintendo Account.

If the web page says the account has not used Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console, perform one eShop sign-in on that console and then try the browser method again. The console redemption route remains available.

Check the code’s region before redeeming

Nintendo Switch Online membership codes are not globally interchangeable. Nintendo says codes for the Americas work with Nintendo Accounts set to countries in that region where eShop is available; codes for other regions work only with accounts set to those regions. On a physical card, inspect the back for the intended country before scratching or entering the code.

A code purchased abroad can therefore be unusable even when the console itself was bought in another supported country. The relevant comparison is the card’s intended country and the Nintendo Account’s country setting, not simply the console’s hardware location. Nintendo says it cannot exchange a code intended for one country for another, so contact the seller promptly if the wrong region was supplied and do not assume Nintendo can convert it.

Country-specific eShop menus, payment methods, membership availability and renewal choices can also vary. These instructions use Nintendo Americas terminology; if your eShop uses different labels, open the local Nintendo support site for the country set on your account and follow its wording.

Understand individual, family and Expansion Pack plans

Before confirming a code, compare the card’s exact plan with the membership already active on the account. Nintendo documents several combinations that do not simply turn into one larger membership.

  • Individual versus family: Nintendo gives the example of an individual membership already active when a family membership code is redeemed. The memberships may run concurrently instead of merging into a single family term.
  • Standard versus Expansion Pack: A Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual code cannot be redeemed on an account that already has an existing family membership, according to Nintendo’s support guidance.
  • Different durations: The code’s term applies according to the plan rules shown during redemption. Do not presume that every code extends an existing expiration date in the same way.

For that reason, verify the plan name on the card, the account’s current membership and the confirmation screen together. If the combination is not what you want, cancel before accepting. Redeeming first and trying to correct the plan afterward may leave memberships running at the same time rather than producing the expected extension.

Auto-renewal and payment prompts

Redemption can include a prompt to select an auto-renewal method. Nintendo’s Americas instructions identify credit card, PayPal and eShop funds as possible methods, but the available methods depend on the account’s country and current settings.

Read the renewal date, price wording and cancellation terms displayed for your region. Nintendo’s US gift-card information says a membership renews after the initial term at the then-current price unless auto-renewal is canceled. That is a future renewal, not an immediate charge created merely by selecting a method during code redemption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not want a future renewal, inspect the confirmation screen for the setting that controls auto-renewal and turn it off when the interface allows. If the screen requires a payment method to be selected before proceeding, note which method is saved and revisit the membership settings after redemption to confirm the status. Regional menus may place this control in a different location, so rely on the labels displayed for your account.

Check whether the membership was applied

Nintendo’s membership FAQ says you can view the plan and expiration date in Nintendo eShop under the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information.

  1. Return to Nintendo eShop

Open eShop and select the same Nintendo Account used for redemption.

  2. Open Nintendo Switch Online information

Choose Nintendo Switch Online, then open the membership information or view/change-membership screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Verify the plan and expiration

Check that the displayed membership tier matches the card and that the expiration date reflects the redeemed term. If the plan appears under a different account, you likely selected the wrong user during redemption and should contact Nintendo Support before attempting another code.

Troubleshoot a rejected or missing code

The exact error text matters. Nintendo’s membership purchase and extension guidance recommends searching for the displayed error or contacting Nintendo Support if the problem persists.

The code is rejected immediately

  • Confirm that you entered the 16-digit Nintendo Switch Online membership code, not a retailer transaction number.
  • Check the country printed on the card against the Nintendo Account’s country.
  • Look for a transcription mistake and remember that the prepaid-code keyboard excludes O, I and Z.
  • Make sure the code has not already been redeemed. A used code cannot be applied again.

The code appears to be for the wrong plan

Stop before confirming if the screen identifies a family, individual or Expansion Pack plan different from the card you intended to use. Review the existing membership first. Concurrent memberships and the documented family/Expansion Pack restriction can make a second redemption unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The web page will not allow redemption

Verify that you are signed in to the intended Nintendo Account and that it has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once. If that prerequisite is not met, use the console method or open eShop on the console and then retry the browser page.

The code was accepted but the membership is not visible

Wait for the confirmation process to finish, then reopen Nintendo eShop with the same account and check Nintendo Switch Online information. If the plan and expiration date still do not appear, save the confirmation details and the exact error or message, then contact Nintendo Support rather than entering the code again.

The card was bought for another country

Nintendo says it cannot exchange a code intended for one country for another. Contact the retailer about its regional-code policy, provide the purchase record and avoid sharing the full unused code publicly.

How to choose a card before buying

If you have not purchased a code yet, compare the card on six points rather than selecting the first listing that mentions Nintendo Switch Online.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Region and account compatibility What country is printed on the card, and is the recipient’s Nintendo Account set to that country or supported region?
Membership tier Is it standard Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack?
Account type Is the code for an individual membership or a family membership?
Term length How long is the initial membership period?
Seller reliability Does the seller clearly identify the region, plan, duration and redemption restrictions?
Code status Is the code new and unused, and does the seller explain what happens if the code has already been redeemed?

Nintendo says membership download codes are sold through select retailers. Stock, prices and seller policies change, so verify the current listing details before paying. A low price does not compensate for a code issued for the wrong country or membership tier.

Security and account-safety practices

  • Enter the code only on Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s official redemption page.
  • Check the account name before entering the code; the first account selected is the one that receives the membership.
  • Do not publish an unused code in a photo, chat or support forum.
  • Keep the receipt and card until the membership plan and expiration date are visible in eShop.
  • When asking for help, share the exact error message without revealing the complete unused code or Nintendo Account password.

Quick decision guide

  • You have the console and the correct regional card: use eShop and follow the eight-step console flow.
  • You prefer a browser: use Nintendo’s redemption page after confirming the account has previously opened eShop on a Switch-family console.
  • Your card and account regions differ: do not redeem; contact the seller because Nintendo does not convert foreign codes.
  • Your account already has a membership: compare individual/family and standard/Expansion Pack details before confirming, since plans may run concurrently or be ineligible for the combination.
  • An error appears: record the exact message, check Nintendo’s error-specific guidance and contact Nintendo Support if it remains unresolved.
