To redeem a Nintendo eShop game code on Nintendo Switch, connect the console to the internet, open Nintendo eShop from the HOME menu, select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game, choose the code-entry option, enter the 16-character code, and confirm. The game icon then appears on HOME with a download-status indicator.

Choose the user carefully: Nintendo assigns the redeemed software to the Nintendo Account linked to that user, and Nintendo says the content cannot later be transferred to another user. If several people use the console, verify the profile before entering anything.

What you need before redeeming a code

Have these items ready before opening the eShop:

  • A Nintendo Switch connected to the internet.
  • The complete 16-character Nintendo eShop download code, usually printed on a retailer receipt or physical card.
  • A Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user you intend to use.
  • A Nintendo Account country and Nintendo eShop region that match the game code.
  • A code intended for Nintendo Switch software, unless you are redeeming it in the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop.

Keep the receipt or card available until the game is successfully redeemed. It identifies the code and may be needed if a retailer must investigate activation, expiry, or a printing problem. Enter the characters as printed; if the eShop inserts spacing on screen, let it do so rather than adding extra characters yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A code from a third-party service may not use Nintendo’s normal format or redemption process. If it is not specifically a Nintendo eShop download code, follow the provider’s instructions instead. A code for another service, a subscription, in-game currency, a trial, or a promotion may not belong in the eShop code-entry screen.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch game code on the console

  1. Connect the Switch to the internet. The eShop must be online to validate the code and start the download. If the console is offline, reconnect before opening the code-entry page.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop. From the Switch HOME menu, select the orange Nintendo eShop icon.
  3. Select the intended user. Choose the Switch user linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Check the profile name before continuing, particularly if the console has child, family, or guest profiles.
  4. Open the code-entry screen. In the eShop’s left-side menu, select the option labeled Enter Code or Redeem Code. Nintendo uses both labels in its support material, and wording can vary by region or interface version.
  5. Enter the code. Type the 16-character download code exactly as it appears on the receipt or card. Do not add spaces unless the screen inserts them automatically. Compare each character before submitting.
  6. Confirm redemption. Review the software and account information shown by the eShop, then confirm. The software icon should appear on the HOME menu with a download-status indicator.

Leave the Switch connected to the internet while the download begins. If the icon is present but the download is paused, select it on HOME and review the displayed status. The appearance of the icon is also useful when diagnosing an apparent “already used” error: the code may already have been accepted and the software may simply be waiting to download.

Double-check the account at the confirmation stage

The most important decision occurs before the code is submitted. A redeemed code is managed by the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user. It is not an entitlement belonging equally to the physical console, and Nintendo says redeemed content cannot later be transferred to another user. If you intended to give the game to a family member, select that person’s account before entering the code.

Which Nintendo Account receives the game?

The selected Switch user determines which linked Nintendo Account redeems the code. The entitlement belongs to that account, not to the console itself and not automatically to every user on the system. Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance says redeemed content cannot later be transferred to another user, so do not select a child, family member, or secondary profile unless that is the account that should own the purchase.

When several users share one Switch

Stop at the user-selection screen and verify the profile name before entering the code. If another user redeemed the code previously, check that user’s eShop activity or content history rather than trying the code repeatedly. A code can be valid even when it is no longer available for a second redemption.

If the console has multiple users, repeat this check for each profile when troubleshooting. Looking only at the profile you normally use can make a successfully redeemed code appear missing.

If the wrong user redeemed the code

Nintendo does not provide a user-to-user transfer of redeemed content. Contact Nintendo Support promptly if the redemption was accidental; do not assume changing the console’s primary user, deleting a profile, or changing the account country will move ownership. Keep the purchase receipt and note the exact account used when contacting support.

Can you redeem a code online without the Switch?

Yes. Nintendo provides an online redemption route for people who do not currently have access to the console. The method is separate from the eShop application but still assigns the game to the Nintendo Account you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Nintendo’s official online code-redemption page in a browser.
  2. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
  3. Confirm the account identity when prompted.
  4. Enter the 16-digit download code shown on your receipt or card.
  5. Confirm redemption.

The account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 at least once before the browser method can be used. If that requirement has not been met, redeem from the eShop on the console first. You also need to sign in to the exact account that should receive the software; the browser route does not provide a later ownership transfer.

The online option is useful when the console is elsewhere, but it does not bypass region, platform, account, or code-status rules. The code still has to be eligible for the account’s eShop region and for the stated Nintendo system.

Method Best when Important requirement
Switch eShop You have the console and want to see the selected user before redeeming. The console must be online, and you must choose the correct user first.
Online redemption You are away from the console but know which Nintendo Account should own the game. That account must previously have accessed eShop on Switch or Switch 2.

Why region matching matters

Nintendo states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” The Nintendo Account’s country setting determines the eShop region. A code purchased for one region can therefore fail on an account configured for another, even when every character was typed correctly.

Check the region before entering the code

  • Identify the country or region for which the retailer issued the code.
  • Check the country setting on the Nintendo Account linked to the selected Switch user.
  • Ensure the eShop opened for that user corresponds to the code’s region.

Retailer listings and cards often identify a market, so do not rely only on the language or currency shown on a listing. A code bought for one country is not automatically interchangeable with a code bought for another country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat changing the account country as a guaranteed fix. Region eligibility is determined by Nintendo and by the code’s terms; changing settings can have account consequences and may not make an incompatible code redeemable. If the code and account regions do not match, ask the seller whether an exchange for the correct region is possible or contact Nintendo Support. Never promise that changing the country setting will make every rejected code work.

Switch and Switch 2 compatibility

Nintendo says Nintendo Switch software codes can also be redeemed in the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. The reverse is not true: software, downloadable content, and upgrade packs made only for Switch 2 cannot be redeemed in the original Nintendo Switch eShop.

Code or content Original Switch eShop Switch 2 eShop
Nintendo Switch software Redeemable when the region and account requirements match. Redeemable when the region and account requirements match.
Switch 2-only software Not redeemable. Redeemable when the code and account are eligible.
Switch 2-only downloadable content or upgrade pack Not redeemable. Redeemable when the code and account are eligible.

If a code is rejected on an original Switch, check the product description, release information, and platform marking. A code intended for Switch 2-only content will not become valid on the older eShop through repeated attempts. Conversely, a standard Switch game code can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop when its account and region requirements are satisfied.

Check release timing as well as platform

A code can identify the correct platform and still be unavailable if the associated software or content has not reached its stated release date. Check the product’s release information and any timing instructions supplied with the card or receipt before assuming the code is defective.

Why a Nintendo Switch code is not working

Use the error type and the code’s history to identify the cause. Re-entering an invalid code over and over will not resolve a region, platform, or activation problem.

“Code already used” or the code is unavailable

First check whether the game is already downloading or whether its icon is on the HOME menu. Review the selected account’s content or redemption history. If multiple users are configured on the Switch, check each user’s history; another Nintendo Account may have redeemed the code. A second attempt cannot redeem the same entitlement to another profile.

“Code not valid” after typing it

Compare every character with the receipt or card and enter it again. Nintendo’s Japanese Switch 2 instructions state that Nintendo eShop codes do not use the letters O, I, or Z, which helps distinguish common look-alikes. That guidance describes Nintendo eShop codes; do not apply it automatically to a code supplied by a third-party service. If the code came from another provider, use that provider’s format and support instructions.

The code is for the wrong product

Confirm that the item is a Nintendo eShop download code, not a subscription, in-game currency code, trial, promotion, or code for another service. Codes for third-party services require the provider’s own redemption instructions. A correctly typed code can still fail when it is intended for a different service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The code is for the wrong region

Match the code’s issued region with the Nintendo Account country and eShop region. Nintendo’s region rule applies even if the code has never been used. Contact the retailer for a region-correct replacement when the seller supplied an incompatible code. Do not assume that a nearby country uses the same eShop region.

The game has not released yet

Some codes cannot be redeemed until the associated software or content is available. Check the product’s stated release date and any timing instructions supplied with the code. If the release date has not arrived, wait for the eligible date rather than repeatedly submitting the code.

The code is for Switch 2-only content

Check whether the code covers Switch 2 software, downloadable content, or an upgrade pack. Those codes cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop; use a compatible Switch 2 eShop instead. A Switch 2-only code is a platform mismatch, not a typing error.

The retailer did not activate the code

Retailers may require activation at purchase, and Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance lists retailer activation and expiry among possible causes of code problems. Keep the receipt and contact the seller first when the code was printed on a receipt or card but fails immediately. If the seller confirms activation, provide the exact error and code details to Nintendo Support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The code has expired

Check the expiry terms supplied with the card, receipt, promotion, or retailer listing. An expired code cannot necessarily be restored by changing the account, console, or region. The seller may be the appropriate contact for a replacement question, while Nintendo Support can help clarify account or eShop errors.

The online route is unavailable

Confirm that the Nintendo Account used in the browser has previously accessed Nintendo eShop on Switch or Switch 2. Without that prior eShop access, use the console redemption route. Also verify that the browser account is the same account that should own the software; signing in with a different account will not create a transfer option later.

A quick decision path

  1. Verify that you opened Nintendo eShop with the user whose account should own the game.
  2. Confirm that the code is a Nintendo eShop code and that its product is for the console you are using.
  3. Check the Nintendo Account country against the code’s region.
  4. Re-enter all 16 characters carefully, accounting for similar-looking characters. Nintendo’s own format guidance excludes O, I, and Z, but do not generalize that rule to third-party codes.
  5. Look in every Switch user’s content or redemption history for an earlier redemption.
  6. Check release timing, expiry terms, and retailer activation.
  7. If using the browser, confirm that the account has previously opened eShop on Switch or Switch 2.
  8. If the code still fails, contact the retailer for purchase or activation issues and Nintendo Support for account, region, or platform errors.

When contacting support, keep the code, receipt or card, the exact error message, the account used, and the console type available. Those details help distinguish a used code from a region, platform, expiry, or activation problem.

Questions readers commonly ask

Where do I enter a Nintendo eShop code?

Open Nintendo eShop from HOME, select the receiving user, then choose Enter Code or Redeem Code in the left-side menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long is a Nintendo Switch download code?

Nintendo’s console instructions describe a 16-character download code. The online redemption page may refer to the same format as a 16-digit code.

Can I redeem a code on a different Switch?

Redemption follows the Nintendo Account, not a permanent console assignment. Sign in with the account that should own the game, and make sure the eShop region and console compatibility meet the code’s terms.

Can I redeem a code online?

Yes. Sign in to Nintendo’s online redemption page with the intended Nintendo Account, enter the code, and confirm. That account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on Switch or Switch 2 at least once.

Does my Nintendo eShop code have to match my region?

Yes. Nintendo says a download code can only be redeemed on an eShop set to the same region as the game. Check the account country and the code’s issued region before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I entered the code on the wrong account?

Nintendo says redeemed content cannot be transferred to another user. Contact Nintendo Support as soon as possible, but do not expect a profile change or account-country change to move ownership.

Why does my code say it was already used?

Check whether the game is already downloading or appears on HOME, then review every Switch user’s content or redemption history. Another account on the console may have redeemed it.

Can an original Switch redeem a Switch 2 code?

No, not when the code is for Switch 2-only software, downloadable content, or an upgrade pack. Nintendo Switch software codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop, but Switch 2-only codes require the compatible eShop.

What should I do if the retailer’s code does not work?

Keep the receipt or card and ask the retailer to verify activation, region, and expiry. If the retailer confirms those details, contact Nintendo Support with the exact error and account information.

Open Nintendo eShop from HOME, select the user who should own the game, and choose Enter Code or Redeem Code in the left-side menu.

Can I redeem a Nintendo Switch code without the console?

Yes, through Nintendo’s online redemption page, provided the Nintendo Account has accessed eShop on Switch or Switch 2 at least once.

Why is my Nintendo Switch code not working?

Check typing, prior redemption by another user, account and code region, product type, release date, platform compatibility, expiry, and retailer activation.

Can I move a redeemed game to another Nintendo Account?

No. Nintendo says redeemed content cannot later be transferred to another user, so select the correct linked account before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a Nintendo eShop code need to match my country?

Yes. The code’s region must match the Nintendo eShop region determined by the Nintendo Account country setting.

The Bottom Line

Select the right Switch user first, then redeem the 16-character code in Nintendo eShop. A matching Nintendo Account region and compatible Switch or Switch 2 product are required; if the code still fails after checking those items, investigate prior use, typing, release date, expiry, and retailer activation.
