On a Nintendo Switch 2, redeem a game code by opening Nintendo eShop from HOME, selecting the user whose linked Nintendo Account should own the purchase, choosing Enter Code, and submitting the 16-character code. Confirm the title, complete the on-screen flow, and look for the software on HOME. Choose the user carefully: Nintendo binds the redemption to that account and does not provide a way to transfer it later. The official step-by-step path is documented by Nintendo’s Switch 2 support page.
Before you enter the code
A few checks prevent the most common redemption errors. Have the console online, identify what kind of code you have, and confirm which account should receive it. A code can be valid and still fail if it is being used on the wrong console generation, in the wrong market, or under the wrong user profile.

Check the console generation
Switch software and downloadable content (DLC) codes can be redeemed in the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop. A code for Switch 2 software, DLC, or an upgrade pack cannot be redeemed in the original Nintendo Switch eShop. If the packaging mentions Switch 2, use a Switch 2 for redemption; if it is a Switch title, Switch 2 can accept it. Nintendo lists this generation distinction in its download-code instructions.

Identify the code type
Not every number sold with Nintendo branding unlocks a particular game. Compare the wording on the card, receipt, or email with this table before entering anything.
| Code type | What it provides | What you should expect after redemption |
|---|---|---|
| Game download code | A specific digital game | The title is confirmed in eShop and can be downloaded through the on-screen flow. |
| DLC or upgrade-pack code | Additional content for a compatible game, or a Switch 2 upgrade | The item is associated with the relevant game; it may not create a separate HOME icon. |
| Prepaid card or prepaid number | eShop account balance | Funds are added to the selected account for a later purchase; the card does not select a game by itself. |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership card | A Nintendo Switch Online membership period | The membership is applied to the account after confirmation. |
| Trial ticket | Temporary access or a trial entitlement | The trial’s own terms apply; it is not the same as purchasing a permanent game. |
Nintendo describes these categories, including the difference between prepaid funds and a game download, in its Japan support documentation. If the code is for a third-party service rather than Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, use the instructions supplied for that service instead.
Confirm the account and region
The eShop will ask you to choose a console user when more than one user is present. That user’s linked Nintendo Account becomes the owner of the redeemed software, pass, or funds. There is no later account-transfer step, so stop and switch users before entering the code if the wrong profile is selected.
This matters in a household where several people use one console. A parent’s account, a child’s account, and a guest profile are separate owners even though they appear on the same HOME Menu. Check the profile name and avatar before opening the code-entry screen, and do not assume that the currently active player is the intended owner.
Codes can also be market-specific. Nintendo’s Japan documentation states that domestic download and prepaid codes require the linked Nintendo Account’s country/region to be Japan. That is a Japan-specific rule, not proof that every market uses the same requirement. Check the region printed on the card and your country’s Nintendo support page before buying or attempting to redeem a code. The Japan requirement and related warnings appear at Nintendo Support Japan.
Redeem a game code on Nintendo Switch 2
- Connect to the internet. Join a working Wi-Fi network, then open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu. The eShop needs an online connection to validate the code and retrieve the entitlement.
- Select the owner. When prompted, choose the console user linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Verify the profile name before continuing. Nintendo assigns the redemption to this account, and it cannot be moved to another account later.
- Open Enter Code. In the eShop navigation, select Enter Code, then select the entry field. The code is 16 characters and uses letters and numbers. Nintendo says the letters O, I, and Z are not used, which helps distinguish a zero from an O or a one from an I.
- Type all 16 characters. Enter the characters exactly as printed, without adding spaces or punctuation. If you are copying from an email, check the first and last characters after pasting; hidden spaces or a line break can make a valid code appear invalid.
- Review the title and confirm. The confirmation screen identifies what the code will add. Read the game, DLC, membership, or balance description and verify that it is the item you intended. If the title or account is wrong, cancel before the final confirmation.
- Finish the download flow. For a game download, follow the prompts shown by eShop. When the process is complete or queued, return to HOME and check for the software icon. A large game may take time to download, so keep the console connected and avoid interrupting the process.
- Handle in-game content correctly. A code for costumes, currency, missions, or another in-game bonus may not create a new HOME-screen icon. Start the associated game and follow its instructions for receiving the redeemed item. Nintendo specifically notes this distinction in its Switch 2 code guidance.
What the confirmation screen tells you
The confirmation step is your last opportunity to catch a wrong-user, wrong-title, or wrong-code-type mistake. For a game, verify the exact name. For DLC or an upgrade pack, verify the associated product. For a prepaid number, look for an account-balance confirmation rather than a game title. For a membership or trial ticket, read the entitlement shown before accepting it.
If anything on that screen is unexpected, cancel instead of confirming and investigate the card or account. Once Nintendo accepts the redemption, the entitlement belongs to the selected Nintendo Account and cannot be reassigned.

What happens after confirmation
A game code normally leads to a download flow and a software icon on HOME once the title is available on the console. If the download is still in progress, leave the console connected and allow the process to finish. A DLC or upgrade may be managed as content for an existing game rather than as a separate icon. A prepaid code increases the selected account’s balance for a later purchase, so there is no game to download until you spend those funds in eShop.
Entering a code with Nintendo Store on a phone or computer
Nintendo Japan also documents entering a code through Nintendo Store on a smartphone or computer when the Nintendo Account is linked to a Switch user. This is a regional alternative, not a guarantee that the same web interface is offered in every country. Use the local Nintendo support site for the current labels and availability. The Japanese purchase and code-entry instructions are at Nintendo Support Japan’s Nintendo Store page.

Why a Nintendo eShop code may not work
“This code has already been redeemed”
Do not assume the code is unusable until you check the console. Nintendo notes that the download may already have started. Look on HOME for the game icon and check the virtual game card area. If neither shows the title, review every user on the console: another profile may have redeemed the code with a different Nintendo Account. Because ownership is account-bound, finding the profile that performed the redemption is the practical recovery path; Nintendo does not transfer the entitlement to a different account. Follow the checks in Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance.
Also check whether the code was for DLC, a membership, or balance rather than a standalone game. Those entitlements may not appear as a new game tile. Review the confirmation details and the relevant account area before attempting to redeem the same code again.
“The code is invalid”
Re-enter the complete 16-character sequence slowly. Compare characters that are easy to confuse, especially 0 and O or 1 and I; Nintendo does not use O, I, or Z in these codes. Make sure you are entering the number in Nintendo eShop or the supported Nintendo Store flow, not in a third-party service’s redemption page. If the printed code is damaged or unreadable, retain your purchase receipt and contact the seller or Nintendo support rather than guessing missing characters.
Check that you have not mixed a prepaid number with a game code, or copied a serial number, barcode, or order reference instead of the actual download code. A code intended for another Nintendo service or market can also fail even when every character was typed correctly.

Nintendo says a code can be rejected when the associated software or DLC has not reached its release date. Check the release date shown with the code or product information and try again after launch. Entering the code repeatedly before release does not make the title available earlier.
The bonus is missing after redemption
Codes for in-game items may complete successfully without adding a separate software icon. Launch the game named on the card, connect as required by that game, and use its receipt, mailbox, store, or similar claim instructions. The exact in-game location varies by title, so read the game’s own instructions after confirming that the code was accepted.
If the game is not installed yet, install or launch the associated title first, then follow its in-game claim process. Do not expect a costume, currency pack, or mission ticket to appear as an independent HOME application.

The wrong user was selected
Check the users listed on the console and each user’s virtual game card area to identify where the software landed. Nintendo states that a redemption cannot be transferred after it is assigned. If you have not yet confirmed the code, cancel and return to eShop to select the correct user; after confirmation, changing profiles will not move ownership.
The region does not match
A code issued for one market may require an account set to that market. For example, Nintendo Japan requires Japan as the linked Nintendo Account country/region for its domestic download and prepaid numbers. Check the card’s market and the relevant local support page before attempting another redemption. Do not treat the Japan rule as universal; other countries can publish different requirements.
Prepaid funds versus a game download code
A prepaid Nintendo eShop card is useful when you need account balance before shopping, but it does not unlock a named game. Redeem it to add funds, then use those funds in eShop to buy the game. Nintendo Japan’s explanation of prepaid numbers and purchase methods is available at Nintendo’s prepaid-number page; that page includes an Amazon Japan purchase route, which should not be assumed to apply outside Japan.
A download card or digital game code, by contrast, identifies a particular title or DLC package. Read the description on the card before entering it so you do not mistake a balance code for a game code or expect a separate HOME icon from an in-game bonus.
Need funds before buying?
If you do not have a game code and simply need money in the account, look for a region-compatible Nintendo eShop gift card or prepaid number. Verify the country or region printed on the product and the account setting before purchase. A prepaid card is an optional way to fund a later purchase; it is not a substitute for the download code you already have.
Questions readers commonly ask
Where do I enter a Nintendo Switch download code?
On Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop from HOME, select the user who should own the content, choose Enter Code, and enter all 16 characters. Confirm the displayed entitlement before accepting it.
Can I redeem a Switch 2 code on the original Switch?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 software, DLC, and upgrade-pack codes cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop. Switch software codes can be redeemed on Switch 2, subject to the account and region requirements.
Can I move a redeemed game to another Nintendo Account?
No. Nintendo assigns the software, pass, or funds to the account linked to the selected console user, and the redemption cannot later be transferred. Choose the owner before confirming.
Why did no game icon appear?
The code may be for DLC, an upgrade, an online membership, prepaid balance, or an in-game bonus rather than a standalone game. Check the confirmation details, virtual game card area, and the associated game’s own claim instructions.

Are Nintendo download codes always 16 digits?
Nintendo describes these eShop download codes as 16-character alphanumeric codes. The letters O, I, and Z are not used, so compare similar-looking characters carefully. Other services may use different code formats.
Can I redeem a code before the game launches?
Nintendo says redemption can fail when the software or DLC has not yet reached its release date. Check the stated launch date and try again after release.
What if another user redeemed my code?
Review every console user and each virtual game card area. The code may have been assigned to a different linked Nintendo Account. Nintendo does not move the entitlement afterward, so the account that redeemed it remains the owner.
Can I use a Japanese prepaid or download code overseas?
Do not assume so. Nintendo Japan states that domestic download and prepaid numbers require the linked Nintendo Account’s country/region to be Japan. Check the market printed on your card and the support rules for your country.
A final pre-confirmation checklist
- The console is connected to the internet and you opened Nintendo eShop from HOME.
- You selected the exact user whose linked Nintendo Account should own the redemption.
- The code is intended for your console generation: Switch 2 codes do not work in the original Switch eShop.
- You know whether the code is for a game, DLC, upgrade pack, prepaid balance, membership, or trial.
- The account country/region matches the code’s market requirements.
- You entered all 16 characters and checked confusing characters such as 0/O and 1/I.
- The confirmation screen shows the expected title or entitlement before you approve it.
- You know whether the result should be a HOME icon, an account balance, a membership, or an in-game claim.
Once these checks pass, the reliable sequence is eShop → Enter Code → 16-character code → confirm → follow the download or in-game claim instructions. The selected Nintendo Account remains the owner of what you redeem.
Frequently Asked Questions
