The redemption method depends on what you received: an ordinary $0.00 Kindle Store listing, an emailed Kindle gift, or a prepaid eBook link. Gift emails are accepted from the notification, prepaid books from their links, and both are tied to the Amazon account you use. If the title is accepted but missing, sync the app or device, remove Library filters, and use Manage Your Content and Devices to deliver it manually.
Identify which kind of free Kindle book you have
“Free Kindle ebook” can describe three different situations. The first is a normal Kindle Store listing whose price is currently zero. The second is a Kindle book someone sent as a gift by email. The third is a prepaid eBook redemption link, usually delivered in an email or printed for you. They do not use the same acceptance screen.

Your Amazon account is the common thread. The book is delivered to the account that accepts the gift or link, and only devices and apps registered to that account can receive it through normal synchronization.

Redeem an emailed Kindle book gift
Use these steps when the message says you received a Kindle book gift or contains a gift notification rather than a prepaid redemption link.

- Open the gift notification. Use the email account where the sender delivered the gift. If you cannot find it, search for the book title, “Kindle book gift,” or “Redeem your gift,” and check spam or promotional folders.
- Select Redeem your gift. This opens Amazon’s gift-acceptance page. Do not substitute a prepaid-link procedure if the email is a gift notification.
- Select Redeem now. Sign in when Amazon asks. Use the account on which you want the title to live; changing accounts later does not move the book automatically.
- Choose the supported Amazon device for delivery. A dedicated Kindle e-reader is not required. Amazon says a supported Kindle device or a Kindle reading app can be used.
- Open the Kindle app or device and sync. The title may download automatically, but synchronization is required before a newly accepted item is guaranteed to appear on another registered device.
When a gift cannot be delivered to your country
Amazon applies copyright and marketplace restrictions to Kindle gifts. If the recipient and sender are in different countries, the title may be unavailable even when the email itself is genuine. The redemption page can offer an Amazon.com Gift Card exchange in that situation. Follow the option shown on the page; do not repeatedly retry the same gift link from a different marketplace.
Redeem a prepaid eBook link
Use this flow when the sender gave you a web link, either in an email or on a printed card. A prepaid eBook is not the same product as a single-copy gift.
- Open the notification link. For a printed link, type the complete address into a browser rather than searching for the title in the Kindle Store. A missing character can send you to the wrong page.
- Sign in to the Amazon account that should own the book. Check the displayed account before accepting. The account that selects the acceptance control is the account to which the title is assigned.
- Select Accept this eBook. Wait for the confirmation page instead of closing the tab immediately after tapping the control.
- Read in the Kindle app or sync another registered device. Amazon says a prepaid eBook becomes immediately readable in the Kindle app. On other Kindle devices and apps, look in Cloud or Archived Items after synchronization.
Why a prepaid link may fail
- Country mismatch: The buyer and recipient must live in the same country for prepaid eBooks. A link issued in one marketplace may not be redeemable from another.
- Already redeemed: A link normally works only once. If another person accepted it, the original recipient cannot claim it again.
- Refund requested: If the sender requested a refund, the link can stop working before you accept it.
- Wrong account: A successful acceptance on a different Amazon account will not place the title in the account you normally use.
What to do with a normal $0.00 Kindle Store listing
A zero-price listing is a store order, not a gift code. Amazon’s customer-support material reviewed for this guide does not publish a single verified screen sequence for claiming these listings, so menu names should not be presented as universal instructions. The available controls can differ by country, browser, app, and whether the listing is temporarily free.

- Open the book’s Kindle Store listing while signed in to the account you intend to use.
- Confirm that the displayed Kindle price is actually $0.00 in your marketplace. A book advertised elsewhere as free may have a different price in your country.
- Use the current zero-price purchase or download control shown on the listing, and complete any confirmation Amazon presents.
- After the order confirmation, open the Kindle app or e-reader library and synchronize it. If the title does not appear, use the missing-content procedure below.
Do not enter a gift code for a normal free listing, and do not assume that an author’s promotion makes every marketplace display the same price. Amazon KDP’s Free Book Promotions information is written for authors running promotions, not as a reader redemption procedure.
Find the accepted book in your Kindle library
Once a gift or prepaid link has been accepted, the title is normally associated with your Amazon account even if it has not yet downloaded to the device in front of you.
Kindle app on a phone or tablet
- Open the Kindle app and select Library.
- Select All so you are viewing every title, not only downloaded books or a custom collection.
- Clear any active filters. A filter for downloaded, unread, or a particular collection can hide a newly accepted book.
- Search for the exact title. Sorting by Recent can move a newly added item to the top.
- If it is still absent, select More > Sync or Sync Now, depending on the app version, and search again.
Kindle e-reader
- Connect the e-reader to the internet.
- From the device controls, choose Settings > Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. The wording depends on the device software.
- Return to the library, remove filters, and search by title or author.
- Check Cloud or Archived Items if the book is listed but not downloaded, then select it to download.
Why internet access matters
Amazon requires an internet connection to purchase, download, or synchronize Kindle books. A device can display books that are already downloaded while still being unable to retrieve a newly accepted title. Connect to a reliable network before troubleshooting the account itself.

Fix a Kindle book that is missing after redemption
Work through these checks in order. Each step addresses a different failure point, so jumping straight to device resets can leave an account or delivery problem unresolved.
1. Check the connection
Verify that the phone, tablet, or e-reader is online. Open another page or app to confirm that the connection works, then retry synchronization. Airplane mode, captive Wi-Fi sign-in pages, and a weak network can all prevent a library refresh.
2. Force a synchronization
In the Kindle app, use More > Sync or Sync Now. On an e-reader, use Settings > Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. Leave the device connected until the operation completes.

3. Remove library filters and search
Open Library > All in the app, clear active filters, and search for the title. Sort by Recent if you want the newest items first. On an e-reader, switch away from downloaded-only or collection views and inspect Cloud or Archived Items.
4. Deliver the book manually from your account
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices.
- Choose Content > Books.
- Find the accepted title in the list.
- Select Deliver or remove from device.
- Choose the registered Kindle device or app that should receive the book.
- Select Make Changes.
- Return to the app or e-reader and synchronize again.
This step is useful when the book belongs to your account but was not automatically delivered to the device you are checking. Select only devices registered to the same Amazon account used for redemption.
5. Check for an incomplete digital order
If the title is not present in Manage Your Content and Devices, open Your Orders > Digital Orders. Look for an incomplete order or an unresolved payment status. A zero-price listing can still fail to finish as an order if the account shows a transaction problem.

6. Restart and update a Kindle e-reader
If the title is visible in your account and has been delivered but the e-reader still does not show it, restart the device and check for a software update. Sync again after the restart. This is the final device-side step in Amazon’s missing-content guidance; it does not replace checking the account and delivery records.

Use the same Amazon account everywhere
Gift acceptance, prepaid-link acceptance, content delivery, and library visibility all depend on the signed-in account. If a family member accepted the link on another account, the book will not appear in yours. Sign out only after noting which account owns the title, because repeatedly switching accounts can make a correctly delivered book look missing.
A Kindle e-reader is optional
Amazon says Kindle books can be read on supported Amazon devices or through a Kindle reading app. You do not need dedicated Kindle hardware to redeem an emailed gift. A phone, tablet, or compatible computer running the Kindle app can be the reading destination, provided it is registered to the accepting account.
Marketplace rules can override a valid invitation
A gift email or redemption link can be authentic and still unusable in your country. Single-copy gift products and prepaid eBooks also use different marketplace rules. Prepaid eBooks require the buyer and recipient to live in the same country; gifts can be restricted by copyright territory and may present the gift-card exchange described earlier.
Do not confuse author promotion timing with reader delivery
Amazon KDP states that an author can schedule up to five days of free promotion during each 90-day KDP Select enrollment period. KDP also says transitions between free and paid lists can take up to 24 hours. Those figures describe author-run promotions and catalog-list transitions, not a guaranteed waiting period for a reader who has accepted a gift, a prepaid link, or a zero-price order.
For a reader, an accepted prepaid eBook should be immediately readable in the Kindle app, while a device that has not synchronized may take longer to display it. If a title remains absent, use the account and delivery checks rather than waiting for an author-promotion window to expire.
