Redeem a GOG game code in either of GOG’s official places: open the GOG redeem page in a browser, or use GOG GALAXY’s cogwheel → Add games & friends → Redeem a GOG code menu. Sign in to the account that should own the game, enter the code exactly as issued, and confirm. After a successful claim, the title appears in that account’s GOG library and can be downloaded from the website or GOG GALAXY.
Those steps apply to a game entitlement or gift code. A discount code and a checkout coupon use different screens and may expire, have cart or product conditions, or be restricted by region. Identify the type and issuer of your code before troubleshooting it.
First, identify what kind of GOG code you have
“Free GOG code” can describe several different offers. The issuer and entitlement determine where the code works, whether it has a deadline, and what you receive after redemption. Use this distinction before assuming that every code should add a free game permanently.

If the message says “gift,” “claim,” or names a specific game, it is probably an entitlement code. If it says “percent off,” “coupon,” or “discount,” follow the discount flow instead of expecting a game to appear in your library.

Redeem a game code in a browser
The browser route is the simplest option and is useful when the GALAXY app is not installed or its dialog is not working.
- Open the official GOG redeem page by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark. Avoid search-result pages or links sent by an unknown person.
- Sign in when prompted. Choose the GOG account that should permanently receive the game; a redemption cannot be moved to a different account after you claim it.
- Enter or paste the code into the redemption field. Preserve every character and do not add spaces before or after it. If you received the code in an email or another app, copying and pasting is usually safer than retyping, but inspect the result for an extra line break.
- Submit the code and follow the confirmation prompts. For a valid game code, GOG will identify the entitlement before it is added.
- Open your GOG library and look for the title. If it is listed, the claim succeeded even if the page did not immediately redirect to the game.
GOG says redeemed content is downloaded through the website or GOG GALAXY. Redemption and installation are separate: a successful claim adds the license to your account, while downloading places the game on your computer.

- Click the cogwheel icon in the top-left corner.
- Choose Add games & friends. Some GOG support text displays this as + Add games & Friends; capitalization and the plus sign can vary between app versions.
- Select Redeem a GOG code (also shown in some help text as Redeem GOG code).
- Enter the code, submit it, and accept the on-screen confirmation.
- Return to your library and search for the game. Select it to begin the download or to view its offline installers and other available files.
GOG’s concise route for a code from a promotion is: cogwheel in the top left, Add games & friends, then Redeem GOG code. If your labels differ slightly, use the menu that contains the word “Redeem” rather than assuming the app is missing the feature.
Claiming a code that came from Amazon Luna
An Amazon Luna promotion has an extra step before GOG redemption. In Luna, open the promotion’s Claims area, select the game tile carrying the GOG logo, and choose Get game. Luna then supplies the GOG code. Redeem that code using the browser or GALAXY procedure above.
Do not infer the deadline from a social-media post, an old article, or a previous Luna offer. GOG states the validity period on the individual game card’s FAQ section. Check that card before spending time troubleshooting an expired promotion. A promotion can stop accepting claims even though people still circulate its former code online.
Confirm the game was added and install it
After the confirmation screen, search the same GOG account’s library. A game that appears there is attached to that account, not to the computer on which you entered the code. You can then choose either of GOG’s supported download routes:

- GOG GALAXY: select the title in your library and choose the install option. GALAXY manages the download and installation in the usual way.
- GOG website: open the game in your library and download the available installer files. This is useful if you do not want to use the desktop app.
GOG does not provide a Steam key for a GOG redemption. The license remains a GOG entitlement, and GOG says its games cannot be redeemed on another storefront. No physical disc, card, or accessory is needed: the code and the resulting download are digital.
What to do when the code fails
Work through the checks in order. The exact error text matters, so keep it available if you eventually contact support.
“Invalid” or rejected code
- Compare the code character by character with the original message. Pay special attention to similar-looking characters such as zero and the letter O, or one and the letter I.
- Remove an accidental leading or trailing space and try again.
- Confirm that you are using the code on GOG, not on Steam, Epic, a console store, or another service. GOG codes are intended for GOG.
- Check whether the message identifies a discount coupon rather than a game entitlement. A coupon entered in the game-code field will not behave like a free-game code.
GALAXY’s redemption window will not complete
Close or abort the redemption dialog and retry. If the second attempt fails, switch to the browser redeem page. This separates an app-session problem from a code or account problem without changing the entitlement.
The browser page loops, shows an error, or does nothing
- Retry in another current browser.
- Use a private or incognito window, which avoids a browser extension or stale session interfering with the form.
- Temporarily disable extensions that modify pages, fill forms, or redirect shopping links, then reload the official page.
- If the browser still fails, use GOG GALAXY instead.
The code may have expired
Check the offer’s own terms before repeating attempts. A GOG-purchased gift code has no expiration date under GOG’s stated policy, but that rule does not automatically cover promotional codes. For an Amazon Luna code, read the validity information in the specific game card’s FAQ. Discount and checkout coupons can also have their own end dates and eligibility rules.

Check the library of every GOG account you may have used. If the title is present, the code was already applied to that account. If it is absent, verify that the code came from the intended issuer and contact GOG support with the source of the code and the exact error message. Do not publish the full code in a forum, chat, screenshot, or support community post.
Gift-code rules that are easy to miss
Directly purchased GOG gift codes
GOG says gift codes purchased directly from GOG do not expire and can be redeemed globally. A code containing several titles remains active while there are still titles available to claim. Each included game can be claimed only once, so sharing a multi-title code means the first account to claim a particular title consumes that title’s claim.
Promotional entitlements
A promotion is governed by its own campaign terms, not by the no-expiration rule for directly purchased gift codes. The campaign can define a claim window, a qualifying account, a region, or a particular game. Read the offer page or game card that issued the code and keep the original message in case support needs to verify it.

Discounts and coupons
A discount code can reduce a purchase without granting a free game. GOG distinguishes newsletter-exclusive and public discount codes from coupons entered directly in the cart. Newsletter or public codes are processed through the code page and then carried into checkout; a checkout coupon belongs in the cart’s coupon field. Both types can expire and can exclude products, require a minimum cart, or be limited by region.
Account, storefront, and region expectations
The account is the important destination. Redeeming while signed in to the wrong account places the game in that account’s library. Confirm the displayed account before submitting, especially on a shared computer or in a browser where another person recently used GOG.
A GOG code is not a cross-store key. GOG states that its games cannot be redeemed elsewhere, so entering the same code on another PC store or console marketplace will not convert it into that platform’s version. Once attached to GOG, download it through GOG GALAXY or the GOG website.
“Global” applies to gift codes purchased directly on GOG under GOG’s stated terms. Promotional and discount offers can impose different country or product rules. If an error mentions region, read the offer’s conditions rather than assuming that the account or code is defective.
Stay safe while looking for free codes
Use only GOG’s official properties for sign-in and redemption. GOG says it conducts business through gog.com, gogalaxy.com, and the official GOG Galaxy desktop app. A page that copies GOG’s colors or logo but uses another domain is not an official redemption surface.
- Type
https://www.gog.com/redeemdirectly, or open it from a trusted bookmark. - Check the domain before entering your password, payment details, or the code itself.
- Ignore unsolicited requests for personal or banking information in exchange for a “free” code.
- Do not install a browser extension that promises automatic GOG coupons or cashback. GOG says it does not cooperate with such add-ons.
- Treat codes posted publicly as potentially used, expired, or altered. A code that fails is not proof that your account is broken.
If a message sends you to a lookalike site, leave it and open the official address yourself. Never post an unused code while asking strangers to diagnose it; anyone who sees it may redeem it first.
A quick decision path
- Does the code grant a named game? Use the GOG redeem page or GALAXY.
- Did it come from Amazon Luna? Claim the game in Luna’s Claims area first, select the GOG-logo tile, choose Get game, then redeem the supplied GOG code.
- Does it promise a percentage or amount off? Use the newsletter/public-code flow or the cart’s coupon field, depending on the instructions.
- Did the claim fail? Recheck every character, account, code type, and deadline; then switch between GALAXY and the browser.
- Still blocked? Contact GOG support with the issuer, offer name, account involved, and exact error, while keeping the complete code private.
Why a “free” code may still ask you to sign in
GOG must associate a digital entitlement with an account so the game can be downloaded again later. Signing in does not turn the code into a physical product or a temporary stream; it records the claim in the selected GOG library. The same account is used whether you install through GALAXY or download installers from the website.

After redemption: keeping a useful record
Save the issuer’s email or promotion details until the game is visible in your library. Record the offer name and date, but do not store the full code in a public note or shared screenshot. This information helps distinguish a campaign deadline from a permanent gift-code policy if the entitlement later needs support.
Extra checks before you retry
When a code fails, separate account, offer, and technical causes instead of repeating the same submission. First check which account name or email is shown on GOG. Next identify who issued the code and whether the message describes a title, a discount, or a coupon. Then read the offer’s terms for a claim date, country restriction, eligible product, or minimum cart value. Only after those checks should you test another browser or GALAXY. This order prevents a valid code from being mistaken for an expired campaign or a coupon being tested in the wrong field.

Why did my Amazon Luna code fail?
Confirm that you claimed the game in Luna’s Claims area by selecting the GOG-logo tile and choosing Get game. Then check the validity information in that game card’s FAQ. Past Luna promotions may no longer accept claims.
