To redeem a free Bethesda game, first determine what kind of code you received. A Bethesda promotional code is normally entered on your Bethesda.net account. Most unused Bethesda game keys should instead be activated in Steam, where a successful activation adds the game to your Library. The Elder Scrolls Online and some other title-specific codes can use a separate account process, so the code’s instructions and title take precedence.
A code is not proof that a free offer is currently available. Bethesda says promotional codes may be distributed through events, streams, giveaways, or directly by Bethesda, but availability depends on the particular promotion.
Identify the code before entering it
“Bethesda promotional code” and “Steam key” describe different redemption paths. Sending a valid code to the wrong service is a common reason for an “invalid” message. Check the email, offer page, physical card, or retailer instructions that came with the code before you begin.

Bethesda’s invalid-code and Steam-redemption guidance says that most unused Bethesda keys should be redeemed through Steam, while certain promotional codes remain redeemable on Bethesda.net. For a promotional code, Bethesda recommends trying Bethesda.net first and then Steam if the code does not work there.

Clues from the code format
Format can provide a hint, but it does not replace the source’s instructions. Bethesda describes Bethesda.net codes as five groups of four characters. Steam key formats vary, and PlayStation, Xbox, and Epic codes use their own formats. A code’s appearance alone cannot establish which account or store owns the entitlement.
Check the account you intend to keep
Sign in to the Bethesda.net or Steam account that should permanently own the game. A redemption normally attaches the entitlement to the account used at that moment. If another family member or a second Steam account is signed in, stop and switch accounts before submitting the code.
Prepare without buying anything
A free digital redemption does not require a physical game, controller, headset, manual, replacement part, or other gaming accessory. Nor do you need to buy another key to make the code work. The useful preparation is administrative: locate the original message or card, identify the named platform, and confirm the account that should receive the entitlement.

Keep the order confirmation, giveaway message, receipt, or event details available while you redeem. Those details can identify whether the code is a full game, downloadable content, or an in-game item and give support the information it needs if the code is rejected. Do not post the complete key publicly or send your account password to anyone.
Redeem a Bethesda promotional code
Use this route for a promotion that explicitly identifies itself as a Bethesda promotional code or directs you to the Bethesda website.
- Open Bethesda.net and sign in. Use the account where you want the code associated. If you do not have an account, create one before continuing and verify that the displayed username and email address are yours.
- Open Account Management. Select your account username, then choose Account Management.
- Choose Redeem Code. Enter the code exactly as supplied. Keep every dash. Do not add spaces at the beginning or end, and check characters that can be confused, such as zero and the letter O.
- Submit the code. Select Redeem once you have checked the account and characters. Avoid repeatedly submitting a code while an earlier request is still processing.
- Confirm the result. A successful submission displays “Success!” on the page. If the promotion grants a game or another entitlement, note the title and any instructions shown after redemption.
- Read the account email. Bethesda says the email address associated with the account may receive additional instructions for a game or content code. Keep that message until the entitlement is visible in the required launcher or game account.
If the code grants an in-game reward rather than a downloadable game, fully exit and restart the game after redemption. Bethesda recommends a complete restart when a redeemed reward does not immediately appear.
What a successful promotional redemption means
The “Success!” message confirms that Bethesda accepted the code for that account; it does not necessarily mean the game is installed. Follow the email or promotion instructions for the next step, such as linking a platform account, installing a title, or restarting the game. Do not redeem the same code again simply because a download has not started.

Promotional code pitfalls
A promotion may award an item instead of a complete game. Read the wording around the code so you know what should appear after redemption. If Bethesda sends a second message with instructions, that message can determine where the title or content is claimed. A code that succeeds on Bethesda.net may therefore require one more account or installation step before you see anything in a game.
Activate a Bethesda game key in Steam
Use Steam for a key that came with a Bethesda game purchase or offer and is identified as a Steam key. Bethesda’s support instructions state that an activated game is added to the Steam Library.
- Locate the key. Check the purchase or offer confirmation email, including any section that separates a game key from other order information. Copy the key without adding an extra space.
- Sign in to the correct Steam account. Open the Steam client and verify the account name before activation. Steam ownership cannot be moved to the account you meant to use after the wrong account accepts a key.
- Open the product-activation dialog. In Steam, select Games → Activate a Product on Steam….
- Follow the prompts. Review Steam’s terms, enter the key when requested, and submit it. Preserve dashes or other separators if the dialog displays them.
- Check the Library. After successful activation, search the Steam Library for the game. Steam may still need to download files before the title can be played; activation and installation are separate operations.
If the key is rejected in Steam but the offer calls it a Bethesda promotional code, use the Bethesda.net procedure instead. Conversely, a key described as a Steam key should not be forced into the Bethesda.net redemption box.
Why the May 11, 2022 date matters
Bethesda’s support guidance records a migration on May 11, 2022. Following that change, most unused Bethesda game keys are intended for Steam rather than a retired Bethesda game launcher. That does not turn every code into a Steam key: certain promotional codes remain on Bethesda.net, and title-specific services such as ESO can have their own route. Treat the date as a rule for ordinary unused game keys, not as permission to ignore the wording of your particular offer.

The Elder Scrolls Online can use an ESO account and its own redemption instructions. Bethesda’s general key guidance specifically warns that title-specific instructions may differ. Before entering an ESO code, open the instructions supplied with that code and confirm which account portal it names. Use the account that should hold the ESO entitlement, not a different Bethesda or Steam account chosen by habit.
The same rule applies to any other code that names a particular platform, edition, or account service. A promotional reward, a full game license, and downloadable content may each have different destinations even when they arrive in one email.
Compare the redemption routes
The safest comparison is based on three questions: what kind of code is it, which account or store accepts it, and where should the entitlement appear afterward?

- Bethesda promotional code: Start at the Bethesda.net account page. Look for the “Success!” confirmation and read the associated email for any additional claim or installation step.
- Most unused Bethesda game keys: Start in Steam’s Games → Activate a Product on Steam… dialog. A successful activation places the game in the Steam Library.
- ESO or another named title service: Use the account portal identified by that title’s instructions. The entitlement may not be visible in the ordinary Bethesda account or Steam Library.
This distinction also explains why trying every redemption box in succession is a poor strategy. Repeated attempts do not convert a platform-specific key, and a code that is accepted on the wrong account can leave the entitlement attached there.

After redemption, verify the entitlement in the destination account before troubleshooting the code itself.
- Bethesda.net promotion: Keep the “Success!” page and confirmation email. Follow any title-specific download or linking instructions provided there.
- Steam key: Search the Steam Library while signed in to the account that entered the key. If the title is listed, activation succeeded even if the game is not installed.
- In-game reward: Close the game completely, restart it, and check the relevant inventory, account, or reward screen.
- ESO or another separate service: Check the account portal named by the title’s instructions rather than relying on the general Steam Library view.
If you cannot find the title, first recheck the signed-in account and the code’s intended platform. Bethesda’s support material recommends checking the correct account when a title is missing from purchase history or downloads.
Troubleshoot an invalid or missing code
“Invalid code” appears immediately
Start with the destination, not with repeated typing. Bethesda says most unused Bethesda game keys moved to Steam redemption after May 11, 2022, while certain promotional codes remain usable on Bethesda.net. Try the service specified by the offer; for a promotional code, Bethesda advises Bethesda.net first and Steam next if the first route fails.
Then re-enter the characters carefully. Preserve dashes, remove accidental leading or trailing spaces, and compare the code with the original email or card. A format that resembles a Steam key is only a clue; the source and instructions carry more weight.
The code says it has already been used
A previously redeemed code is no longer available for another activation. Check the purchase history or Library of the account that may have redeemed it earlier. If the code came from a retailer, giveaway, or another person, ask the original provider to verify its redemption status rather than attempting it on multiple accounts.
The game is on the wrong account
Sign out and inspect the username and email before checking again. Bethesda recommends confirming the correct account when a game is absent from purchase history or downloads. A code accepted by a different account generally remains associated with that account; support may need to review the situation, and you should not assume a second redemption will transfer ownership.

A second-hand or retailer-supplied code is already registered
Bethesda says a code registered to another account cannot be registered again. Contact the retailer or seller if a second-hand code appears used. Keep the order number, receipt, confirmation email, and the exact error message. Do not publish the full key when asking for help.
The reward does not appear in the game
Fully exit and restart the game, as Bethesda recommends for a redeemed in-game reward that is not visible. Confirm that you restarted the title connected to the same account used for redemption. If the reward still does not appear, review the confirmation email for an additional claim step or title-specific requirement.
The promotional code still fails on the recommended services
After checking the account, platform, spelling, and code source, contact Bethesda Customer Support as Bethesda advises. Include the code’s source, the title or promotion name, the account email (without sharing your password), the service you tried, and the exact error. Support can determine whether the promotion is restricted, expired, already claimed, or assigned to another account.
What the Bethesda launcher closure changes
Do not look for a retired Bethesda.net launcher as the place to activate an unused key. Bethesda’s account guidance explains that the launcher closure does not eliminate Bethesda.net accounts. Accounts remain needed for live titles such as Fallout 76 and other Bethesda services, while game-key redemption follows the current Bethesda.net or Steam instructions for that code.
In practical terms, the launcher and the account are separate things. You can still need a Bethesda.net account for a live service or promotional code even when a downloadable PC game is delivered through Steam.

Is every code advertised as “free” redeemable right now?
No. Bethesda lists events, streams, giveaways, and direct distributions as possible sources of promotional codes, but a code must come from a current, valid offer. The redemption steps cannot create an offer that is no longer active.
Where should I redeem most unused Bethesda game keys?
