Use a PDF editor’s dedicated redaction tool to remove sensitive invoice content, apply the redactions, and then check whether hidden information also needs sanitizing. A black rectangle drawn over text may hide it on the page without removing the underlying content. Save and inspect the redacted copy, then sign that finalized version.
Why a black box is not the same as redaction
A shape or annotation can cover text visually while leaving the original content in the PDF, depending on how the document was edited and saved. A recipient may still be able to select or copy that text, or examine other content in the file. A black box is therefore not evidence that invoice information has been securely removed.
Adobe describes redaction as permanently removing selected visible text or graphics, with a colored box or other mark displayed over the removed area. The key step is applying the redactions—not merely drawing a cover or leaving redaction marks pending. Adobe explains the difference between redaction and sanitization.

What redaction removes—and what it may not
Visible invoice content
Redaction is for information displayed on the page, such as an account identifier or personal contact detail that genuinely needs to be withheld. Adobe’s instructions cover selecting text or images for redaction, and its related guidance also describes search-based redaction. Review the marked areas carefully before applying them: removing the wrong field can make the invoice incomplete or unusable.

Hidden information
Sanitization is a separate step aimed at information that may not appear on the page, such as metadata, comments, embedded content, scripts, or hidden layers. Whether you need it depends on the document and what you intend to disclose. Adobe notes that removing hidden information can also remove document features, including signatures; do not assume sanitization has no effect beyond page appearance. Adobe’s guidance describes these hidden-data targets.
A safe sequence for preparing an invoice PDF

Keep an untouched original. Work on a copy and store the original in an appropriately controlled location. This gives you a recovery point if you remove too much or need to verify the invoice later.

Mark content with the dedicated redact feature. In your PDF editor, choose its redaction command and select only the text or graphics you need to withhold. Adobe documents this workflow in Acrobat; its Experience League tutorial says the feature is available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. See Adobe’s redaction tutorial.

Apply the redactions. Do not stop at pending marks or a visual annotation. Applying them is the step that removes the selected content in the documented workflow. Adobe’s current Acrobat instructions cover selecting and applying redactions.

Decide whether to sanitize hidden information. Review the editor’s sanitization option and consider the effect on metadata and document features before proceeding. Adobe warns that redaction-related removal of hidden information may remove signatures and other features. Adobe outlines the potential impact on signatures and document features.

Save a separate final copy and inspect it. Reopen the saved file. Check that each redacted area looks right and use the reader or PDF tools available in your workflow to see whether the supposedly removed text remains searchable, selectable, or extractable. This is a practical verification step, not a guarantee that a particular file or tool has passed an independent security test.

Sign the finalized copy. Redact and perform any needed sanitization before signing the version you plan to send. Editing a signed file can remove its digital signature or affect review, fill, and sign features; do not assume its signature remains valid after those changes. Adobe describes these possible effects.

What to know about redaction tools
A dedicated command is the right starting point, but it is not a reason to skip checking the output. A paper titled “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction” raises a concern about possible leakage in tools it examined, including Acrobat. The available search listing does not establish whether any current version remains affected, so it does not support a claim that all current redaction tools leak information. Treat it as a reason to verify sensitive files rather than as proof that a particular present-day product is unsafe. View the paper’s arXiv search listing.

For Adobe’s documented desktop workflow, the current guidance covers marking content, applying redactions, and choosing whether to sanitize hidden information. The precise controls can vary by product and version, so follow the instructions for the editor you are using rather than assuming every PDF app handles removal and sanitization identically.
