Recycle the cardboard TV box through your local cardboard route after removing loose materials and flattening it. Foam inserts are different: do not put them in a recycling cart unless your waste authority specifically accepts the exact foam type. Some communities require a designated drop-off, while others direct certain foam to garbage.
Identify whether the insert is expanded polystyrene (EPS) or protective polyethylene (PE), check your municipality’s item-by-item instructions, and follow the receiving facility’s rules for cleanliness, tape, labels, size, fees and quantity. The television itself has a separate electronic-waste route.
Start with the material, not the symbol on the package
A television package normally contains two disposal streams:

- Protective foam: molded end caps, corner blocks and sheets may be EPS (expanded polystyrene) or PE (polyethylene). Acceptance depends on the material and the local program.
A recycling triangle or resin number does not by itself mean that your curbside service accepts the item. A number identifies a material; the local program decides what it collects, where it collects it and how it must be prepared.

| Item | Most likely route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Flattened cardboard TV carton | Cardboard cart, paper program or community depot | Maximum dimensions, collection limits, tape and label instructions |
| Clean white EPS molded inserts | Specialized foam drop-off where available; otherwise the authority’s residual-waste route | Whether the site accepts #6/EPS packaging, resident eligibility, cleanliness and fees |
| Protective PE foam sheets or blocks | Often a different route from EPS | Whether the program accepts PE foam at all; some programs reject it |
| Television hardware | Separate electronics-recycling or e-waste drop-off | Accepted brands or sizes, appointment rules, fees and quantity limits |
Because municipal contracts and facility rules change, check the current item listing before putting anything at the curb or driving to a depot.
How to identify the box and foam
Cardboard carton
The brown, folded outer carton is corrugated cardboard even when it has glossy printing, ink, plastic handles or colored graphics. Remove the television, manuals, bags and other loose pieces first. If the box is wet, greasy or heavily contaminated, ask the local authority whether it belongs in garbage instead of cardboard recycling.
EPS (expanded polystyrene)
EPS is the rigid, lightweight foam commonly molded into television end caps. It may have a bead-like texture and can carry a number 6 or “PS” marking. A number 6 marking is useful when a facility asks for #6 polystyrene, but it is not proof of curbside acceptance.

PE foam is usually softer and more flexible than molded EPS. Television cartons can contain PE sheets, sleeves or cushioning blocks, and a program that accepts white EPS may still reject this material. The City of Brimbank, for example, accepts specified white EPS but says protective PE foam used in television and appliance boxes is not accepted through its polystyrene recycling service: Brimbank’s polystyrene recycling guidance.

Step-by-step: recycle the cardboard TV box
- Empty the carton. Remove the television, remote, cables, manuals, plastic bags, foam, tape rolls and any loose packing pieces. Keep the foam separate; it does not automatically follow the cardboard route.
- Flatten the panels. Open the glued or taped seams and press the carton flat. Flattening makes the material fit a cart and prevents a large box from blocking collection equipment.
- Prepare tape and labels according to local instructions. Some programs ask residents to remove as much tape and shipping labeling as practical. Calgary’s cardboard guidance specifically tells residents to remove as much tape and labeling as possible and put removed tape in garbage: City of Calgary cardboard-box instructions.
- Choose the permitted route. Put the flattened cardboard in the local cardboard or paper container only if that service lists large cartons as accepted. Otherwise, take it to an authorized recycling depot or transfer facility.
- Handle oversized pieces as directed. Calgary lists TV boxes as cardboard, allows them in a blue cart or at a community depot, and directs oversized cardboard pieces to a depot rather than leaving them beside the cart: Calgary’s current “How to recycle cardboard boxes” page. Other municipalities may set different dimensions, so do not treat Calgary’s limit as a universal rule.
- Keep the flattened box dry. Store it under cover until collection or transport. A soaked carton can lose fiber quality and may be rejected by a facility even when dry cardboard is accepted.
Do not place a whole, assembled TV carton beside a cart unless the local service explicitly allows it. A driver may leave it behind, and wind can create a litter problem.
Step-by-step: handle the foam inserts
1. Separate and identify every piece
Remove EPS end caps, PE sheets, corner cushions, plastic film and cardboard dividers from the carton. If different foams are present, keep them in separate bags or piles. Do not assume that all white foam is the same material; color is not a reliable acceptance test.
2. Search the local authority using the exact material names
Use your city, county, regional district or waste-hauler item finder and search for “foam packaging,” “expanded polystyrene,” “EPS,” “polystyrene,” and, where relevant, “protective PE foam.” Confirm all of the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- the exact foam type and shape accepted;
- whether the route is curbside, a community depot or a specialized facility;
- whether the service is limited to residents or requires proof of address;
- cleanliness, dryness, tape and label requirements;
- size, quantity, appointment and vehicle restrictions; and
- any current fee or seasonal opening schedule.
Toronto lists protective electronics packaging among foam polystyrene accepted through its recycling program and directs residents to a drop-off depot rather than a normal curbside cart. Its current program information is at Toronto’s Recycling Program page. That is a local rule, not a general rule for every city.

3. Prepare foam for a designated drop-off
Follow the facility’s preparation instructions literally. Cook County’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) accepts clean, dry #6 polystyrene from televisions and electronics at its designated facility and asks residents to remove tape and labels: Cook County CHaRM Center guidance. If your facility has a similar requirement, wipe off dirt, let damp pieces dry, remove labels and tape, and keep non-foam parts out of the load.
4. If no recycling route exists, use the authority’s residual-waste instructions
Do not improvise a curbside solution when the local program says no. Milwaukee’s recycling directory, for example, directs Styrofoam to garbage rather than its recycling cart and gives separate instructions for televisions: City of Milwaukee Recycling Directory. In another municipality, the same material may go to a specialized drop-off. The correct choice is the current instruction for your address.
5. Transport it without contaminating other recyclables
Place loose foam in a clean bag or box for the trip if the receiving site permits that container. Do not pack it with food waste, soil or liquids. At the site, ask staff where EPS and PE belong if the signage does not distinguish them. Never leave material outside a locked depot or after-hours gate.

| Location and source | Cardboard or foam direction | Route and preparation noted by the authority |
|---|---|---|
| Calgary | TV boxes are listed as cardboard. | Flatten cardboard for a blue cart or community depot; oversized pieces go to a depot; remove as much tape and labeling as possible and put tape in garbage. Source |
| Toronto | Protective electronics packaging is listed among accepted foam polystyrene. | Foam is directed to a drop-off depot rather than the ordinary curbside stream. Source |
| Brimbank | Specified white EPS is accepted; protective PE foam used in television and appliance boxes is rejected. | Residents must use the program’s accepted-material route and keep PE foam out. Source |
| Cook County | Clean, dry #6 polystyrene from TVs and electronics is accepted. | Use the CHaRM Center; remove tape and labels before delivery. Source |
| Milwaukee | Styrofoam is not accepted in the recycling cart. | Use garbage instructions for the foam; televisions have separate e-waste drop-off guidance and are not accepted curbside. Source |
These policies are operational examples, not a universal standard. A nearby city can have a different contractor, depot network or definition of acceptable foam.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the local answer is unclear
The item finder lists “polystyrene” but not “TV foam”
Call or email the authority and describe the piece as “molded EPS television packaging” or “protective PE foam from a television box.” Send a photo only if the authority requests one. Ask whether the material must be clean and dry, whether drop-off is required and whether the site is currently accepting it.
The authority accepts EPS but rejects PE
Separate the materials and take only the accepted EPS to the stated facility. Put the PE foam through the authority’s residual-waste route unless it identifies another option. Do not mix PE into an EPS load; one rejected piece can contaminate or delay an entire shipment.
The depot accepted foam previously but now refuses it
Ask whether the facility changed vendors, reached a capacity limit or requires an appointment. Check the authority’s current webpage before making another trip. If no alternative recycling route is listed, follow the current garbage instruction rather than abandoning the material at the site.

The box is too large for the cart
Flatten it and check the published dimension limit. If the authority says oversized cardboard must go to a depot, use that route. Do not cut cardboard into tiny pieces merely to force it into a cart unless the program allows that preparation.
The cardboard is wet or contaminated
Separate clean, dry sections if the local program permits partial recycling. Ask about the remainder; heavily soiled or saturated cardboard may belong in garbage. Do not hide wet cardboard inside a dry box.
Keep, reuse or give away the packaging
Recycling is not the only practical option. Keep the box and matching foam if you may move soon, return the television under a retailer’s return window, or need to transport it for service. Store the carton flat and the foam away from heat and moisture. Mark the contents so the pieces are not mistaken for household trash.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a permanent disposal decision, offer clean, intact packaging to someone moving or shipping a similarly sized screen only when local rules allow private reuse. Do not pass on foam that is cracked, crumbling, moldy or contaminated. If your municipality maintains a reuse-and-repurpose directory, use that local listing rather than assuming a general donation center accepts oversized television packaging; Oklahoma City, for example, publishes a dedicated “Reuse and Repurpose” resource at its reuse and repurpose page.
If you are also getting rid of the television
The screen, cables and remote are not packaging. Treat the television as electronic waste and use the local authority’s separate e-waste instructions. Requirements can include a designated drop-off center, appointment, resident eligibility, size limits or a fee. Milwaukee’s directory explicitly distinguishes televisions from Styrofoam: TVs are not accepted curbside and have separate drop-off guidance, while the foam follows the garbage instruction described above: Milwaukee’s Recycling Directory.
Do not put a television in a cardboard bundle, a recycling cart or a garbage container unless the local authority expressly says that route is legal. Keep the screen upright during transport, secure it so it cannot slide, and follow the receiving facility’s unloading instructions.
Decision checklist before collection or drop-off
- Cardboard: Is the carton empty, flattened, dry and within the local size limit?
- Tape and labels: Does the local program ask for removal, and have you put removed tape where it belongs?
- Foam type: Is each piece EPS, PE or another material, and does the chosen facility name that exact type?
- Route: Is the instruction curbside, a community depot, a specialized CHaRM-style facility or residual waste?
- Preparation: Are accepted pieces clean and dry, with tape, labels, plastic film and cardboard removed?
- Access: Is the site open, within your service area and accepting the material today?
- Limits: Have you checked fees, appointments, quantity limits and oversized-item rules?
- Transport: Are loose pieces contained so they will not blow away or contaminate other recyclables?
- Television: If the screen is also being discarded, have you arranged its separate e-waste route?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Putting EPS or PE foam in the cardboard cart because it came inside a cardboard box.
- Assuming every white foam insert is EPS.
- Using a recycling symbol as a substitute for the local item-finder instruction.
- Taking PE foam to an EPS-only depot.
- Leaving a large assembled carton beside a cart without checking oversized-item rules.
- Delivering dirty, wet or tape-covered foam to a facility that requires clean, dry material.
- Mixing the television with its packaging when the authority has a separate e-waste route.
- Leaving material outside a depot after hours or at a location that does not list it as accepted.
A simple decision path
- Flatten and prepare the cardboard, then use the local cardboard cart or authorized depot if accepted.
- Identify each foam insert as EPS, PE or another material.
- Search the local authority for the exact foam term and confirm the route, preparation and current operating details.
- If an approved foam drop-off exists, deliver clean, dry material exactly as instructed.
- If no recycling route exists, follow the authority’s residual-waste direction; do not substitute a curbside recycling cart.
- Arrange television disposal separately through the local e-waste program if the screen is also leaving your home.
This process prevents the two most common errors: contaminating cardboard recycling with foam and assuming that a rule from another city applies to your address.
