Do not put a lithium-ion battery, or a device that contains one, in household garbage or a curbside recycling bin. Collection trucks, compactors and material-recovery equipment can crush or puncture batteries and start fires. For an intact, removable battery, isolate the terminals with non-conductive tape (electrical tape is preferred) or place the battery by itself in a plastic bag, then take it to a location that explicitly accepts that battery type. A swollen, leaking, cracked, bent, crushed, malfunctioning or recalled battery needs a damaged-battery service—not a normal collection box.
Use an EPA-referenced Earth911 or Call2Recycle locator, a participating retailer, a certified electronics recycler or your local household-hazardous-waste program. Confirm the site’s accepted chemistry, size, condition, quantity, hours, fees and device requirements before you leave home.
Why lithium-ion batteries cannot go in normal bins
Lithium-ion cells store substantial energy in a compact package. When a battery is crushed, punctured, bent or short-circuited, that energy can produce intense heat and ignite nearby material. Garbage trucks and recycling facilities use compaction, shredding and conveyor equipment that can damage a loose battery hidden in a bag or mixed with containers.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states: “Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing these batteries should NOT go in household garbage or recycling bins.” This applies to loose rechargeable cells, removable packs and products whose batteries are built in. A curbside program that accepts ordinary household batteries is not automatically equipped for lithium-ion batteries.

Keep lithium-ion items out of both waste streams even if the battery appears empty. Rechargeable cells retain energy after a device stops operating, and a recycling facility cannot reliably identify every battery before equipment handles it.
Identify the battery before you handle it
Check the chemistry and product markings
Look for “lithium-ion,” “Li-ion” or a battery symbol on the cell, pack, device label or owner’s manual. Rechargeable packs in phones, laptops, cameras, game controllers, cordless tools, e-bikes and many other products are commonly lithium-ion, but the exact chemistry and format determine which sites can accept them. Do not assume that a location accepting small rechargeable batteries also accepts an e-bike pack, a high-capacity tool battery or an electric-vehicle battery.
Determine whether the battery is removable
If the manufacturer designed the battery to slide out, release with a latch or be replaced using the documented procedure, it can normally be separated for drop-off. A product marked non-serviceable, sealed or not user-repairable should remain intact. Do not pry, drill, cut or force a battery out of a device; damage during removal can create the very fire hazard recycling rules are intended to prevent.
Inspect condition before preparation
Normal preparation is only for an intact battery. Stop and switch to the damaged-battery procedure if you see any of the following:
- Swelling, bulging or a case that no longer fits its device
- Liquid leakage, unusual odor or visible residue
- Cracks, punctures, exposed cells or torn insulation
- Bending, crushing or other impact damage
- Unexpected overheating, smoke, hissing or repeated malfunction
- A manufacturer or regulator recall identifying the battery as defective
A battery showing one of these conditions must not be placed in a standard drop-off box, even if its terminals are taped or it is inside a bag.
Prepare an intact, removable battery for drop-off
Follow this sequence only when the battery has no damage and the product instructions allow removal.

- Power down and separate the battery. Turn off the device, disconnect its charger and remove the pack using the manufacturer’s normal release method. Stop if the pack resists removal.
- Protect both terminals. Cover the positive and negative contacts with non-conductive tape. The EPA says electrical tape is preferred. Apply tape so it stays attached and does not cover the identification label.
- Use an individual bag when appropriate. If you do not tape the contacts, put each battery in its own plastic bag. Do not place multiple loose batteries together where their terminals can touch.
- Keep the label readable. Recycling staff need the chemistry, voltage, model or manufacturer information to sort the pack correctly. Do not wrap the entire battery so tightly that the label cannot be seen.
- Prevent contact with metal. Keep prepared batteries away from keys, coins, tools, foil and other conductive objects during storage and transport. Do not stack unprotected cells in a container.
- Store temporarily in a safe place. Keep the prepared battery away from flammable materials and damage until you can deliver it. Do not leave a battery in a normal household recycling container while waiting for a collection event.
Taping or bagging is a handling step for intact batteries; it does not make a swollen, leaking, cracked, bent, crushed, malfunctioning or recalled battery acceptable for a regular box.
Find a lithium-ion battery drop-off near you
Start with a locator that asks for your battery type
EPA-referenced Earth911 and Call2Recycle resources can identify nearby programs. In the Call2Recycle locator, enter your ZIP code and select the battery type. Results may separate ordinary rechargeable batteries, power-tool packs, e-bike batteries and other high-energy formats. A map result is not proof that the site accepts your specific item, so read the listing and call when details are unclear.
Check other legitimate collection channels
- Participating retailers: Some stores take back particular rechargeable batteries or the products they sell. Acceptance, quantity and condition rules differ by store.
- Certified electronics recyclers: These facilities may accept devices with integrated batteries and can route batteries to appropriate processors.
- Household-hazardous-waste programs: Local or regional authorities often publish collection events or permanent sites for batteries and other hazardous products.
- Manufacturer or dealer programs: These are especially important for recalled packs, large-format batteries and products with proprietary designs.
Search results, store signage and a general “battery recycling” label are not enough by themselves. The receiving program must explicitly accept lithium-ion batteries in the relevant size and condition.
Confirm the site before traveling
Ask the location to confirm all of the following:
- Whether it accepts lithium-ion chemistry rather than only alkaline or lead-acid batteries
- The physical size, watt-hour range or product category it handles
- Whether the battery must be removed from the device
- Whether intact and damaged batteries go to different locations
- Any per-visit or quantity limit and whether a fee applies
- Current hours, appointment requirements and holiday closures
- Required taping, bagging, box or other packaging
- Transport instructions, including how to bring a battery that cannot be safely prepared
These details are site-specific. A location that accepts a phone battery may reject a laptop pack, a large tool battery or an e-bike battery.
Compare drop-off options before choosing one
| Option | Accepted chemistry and size | Intact versus damaged batteries | Device handling | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earth911 or Call2Recycle locator result | Varies by listed site; select lithium-ion and the closest matching category | Many standard boxes are for intact batteries; damaged-battery capability is not stated unless the listing says so | Some sites take loose batteries only; others accept devices | Call ahead about condition, quantity, hours and packaging |
| Participating retailer | Usually limited to products or battery types named by that retailer | Normal take-back generally excludes damaged or defective packs; confirm directly | May require the whole product or a removable pack | Store-specific limits, fees and acceptance of non-purchased items |

| Household-hazardous-waste facility | Program-defined; may include household lithium-ion batteries and devices | Some programs direct damaged batteries to a separate process; not stated without local rules | Can accept whole devices, but confirm before arrival | Resident eligibility, event dates, quantity limits and transport rules |
| Manufacturer, vehicle dealer or installer | Best match for proprietary, recalled, vehicle or stationary-storage batteries | Can provide specialized instructions for defective packs | Usually manages the complete product or system | Model, serial number, recall status and appointment process |
Transport and hand the battery to staff safely
Use the collection site’s packaging and transport instructions exactly. Keep an intact prepared battery in the individual bag or with its terminal tape in place, prevent it from moving against metal objects and keep it away from flammable materials. Do not place a loose battery in a box with tools, coins or other batteries. If the site requires a special container, obtain its instructions before setting out.

Do not abandon a battery at a locked site or leave it beside a collection box. Take it back and contact the program for an approved handoff if the location is closed or cannot accept that condition.
Special case: batteries built into devices
Phones, tablets, ultrathin laptops, wireless headphones and many other products use batteries that are glued, screwed or otherwise integrated. If the product is not designed for user service, take the entire device to a certified electronics recycler, a participating retailer take-back program or a household-hazardous-waste facility that accepts electronic devices. Tell the program that the device contains a lithium-ion battery.
Back up and remove personal data before surrendering a working device, then follow the manufacturer’s reset or account-removal procedure. Do not puncture the enclosure, pry under the cell or use heat to separate it. A recycler with the right equipment can manage the device without creating avoidable damage.

Power-tool and other removable battery packs
Once separated from a charger or tool, a removable power-tool pack is handled as a lithium-ion battery. Choose a location that explicitly accepts rechargeable batteries or that manufacturer’s pack. Keep the pack’s contacts isolated as described above and bring the tool separately if the site asks for the complete product.
Do not place a pack in a collection box merely because the same store sells compatible tools. Brand-specific acceptance, pack size and quantity limits can differ between locations.
E-bike and micromobility batteries
E-bike, scooter and other micromobility packs can be larger and higher-energy than ordinary consumer cells. Verify acceptance before visiting; a locator may list e-bike or high-energy batteries separately from standard rechargeable batteries.

Stop normal recycling preparation as soon as damage is suspected. Do not tape over a swollen case, force it into a plastic bag, charge it, puncture it or put it in a standard collection box. Move people and flammable materials away from the battery without handling it more than necessary.
- Keep it isolated from combustible items. Do not store it with paper, solvents, fuel, fabric or other flammables.
- Contact the right authority. Call the manufacturer or retailer, your local household-hazardous-waste program or a collection site trained to receive damaged and defective batteries.
- Describe the condition accurately. Report swelling, leakage, heat, odor, physical damage, malfunction or recall status so the program can give appropriate instructions.
- Follow the program’s packaging and transport directions. A damaged battery may require a different container, vehicle arrangement or appointment than an intact one.
- Respond to an immediate fire risk. If the battery is smoking, sparking, rapidly heating or already burning, move away and call emergency services. Do not attempt to transport it to a routine drop-off.
The Battery Network and Call2Recycle state: “Damaged or Defective (DD) batteries (including lithium-ion), require special handling and should not be placed in The Battery Network’s collection boxes.” This restriction applies even when a nearby box is convenient and appears to accept rechargeable batteries.

The site accepts batteries but not devices
If the battery is removable and intact, follow the site’s preparation rules and bring only the pack if permitted. If it is integrated, use a certified electronics recycler, retailer take-back program or household-hazardous-waste facility that accepts the whole device.
The site accepts intact batteries but yours is damaged
Use the damaged-battery contacts provided by the manufacturer, retailer, local hazardous-waste authority or trained collection program. A normal box cannot be upgraded to a damaged-battery service with tape or extra packaging.
You cannot find a location that states your exact battery type
Call local household-hazardous-waste authorities, certified electronics recyclers and the product manufacturer. Give them the battery label, device model, dimensions or pack category and condition. Ask for a specific receiving site rather than relying on a generic recycling claim.

The battery is recalled
Follow the recall notice or manufacturer’s instructions before attempting any recycling. A recalled pack is treated as defective for collection purposes and should not go into an ordinary battery box.
A quick decision checklist
- Is it lithium-ion or another rechargeable chemistry identified on the label or manual?
- Is it removable by the product’s documented, user-serviceable method?
- Is the case intact, with no swelling, leak, crack, puncture, bend, crush damage, overheating, odor or malfunction?
- If intact and removable, are both terminals taped with non-conductive electrical tape or is each battery in its own plastic bag?
- Is the label visible and the battery separated from metal objects and flammables?
- Does the chosen site explicitly accept this chemistry, size and condition?
- Have you confirmed device requirements, quantity limits, fees, hours and transport instructions?
If any answer involving condition is unfavorable, stop the normal workflow and arrange specialized handling instead.
