Most ordinary empty toner cartridges do not have a reliably established cash resale value. In the United States, Office Depot and OfficeMax offer conditional store rewards for eligible in-store recycling; HP and Brother provide free return routes for eligible supplies, but do not describe those routes as cash sales. A buyer that advertises purchases of unused toner is not evidence that it will pay for spent, empty cartridges.
First, identify what you have
Before looking for a buyer or return program, read the label and note the brand and exact cartridge number. Also classify its condition: empty or spent, unopened or unused, original, refilled, remanufactured, or damaged. These distinctions matter because a recycling program’s acceptance rules may exclude some cartridges, while a buyer for unused inventory may not accept empties at all.
- Empty or spent: Check the brand’s recycling instructions or a retailer’s current terms. Do not assume an empty cartridge is a resale item.
- Unopened or unused: A buyer may consider it, but confirm that it accepts the exact model and condition before sending it.
- Refilled, remanufactured, or damaged: Check exclusions carefully. For example, HP’s consumer return instructions exclude refilled and remanufactured cartridges.
Can you sell empty toner cartridges for cash?
No typical cash price or dependable resale market for spent empty toner cartridges is established by the available program terms. A company advertising purchases of unused ink and toner is not necessarily buying spent empties. For example, SellToner’s public page describes buying unused supplies; its advertised “up to $350 per cartridge” is a promotional maximum, not a typical or guaranteed offer, and does not establish payment for empty cartridges.
If a service says it will buy your cartridge, verify the exact model and condition, the quoted amount, shipping costs, and payment terms directly before mailing anything. Do not treat a headline offer for unused stock as a quote for a spent cartridge.

Where to take empty cartridges in the United States
Office Depot and OfficeMax: conditional store rewards
Office Depot and OfficeMax say their stores accept any brand of ink or toner cartridge for recycling. Their current terms offer $2 in rewards per qualifying cartridge, up to 10 rewarded cartridges per month, when you make a qualifying $10 purchase in the same month. The purchase has exclusions, and mail-in recycling does not earn rewards. These are store rewards, not cash. Office Depot’s help page, updated January 12, 2026, says all brands of ink and toner qualify; check current terms and local store participation before making a trip.
HP Planet Partners: free returns for eligible HP and Samsung supplies
HP says its program accepts nearly every Original HP cartridge and Samsung toner cartridge, subject to a separate list of non-returnable items. In the United States, HP describes free mail-back labels and materials as well as drop-off at participating stores. HP says it can arrange free pallet pickup for more than 76 toner cartridges. For smaller quantities, follow the current instructions on HP’s local program page.

HP’s consumer instructions say not to send other brands, refilled cartridges, or remanufactured cartridges, and to send only empty supplies. HP also says returned items cannot be tracked or retrieved, so check the accepted-products list and return method before shipping. HP reports that Planet Partners operates in more than 60 countries and territories, but local options and accepted products vary; availability in a country does not mean every country has the same terms.
Brother: free prepaid returns for eligible Brother supplies
Brother USA describes a free prepaid USPS return label for used Brother ink, toner, drum, and P-touch supplies. The instructions ask users to log in or create an account and, where possible, reuse packaging from the new item to repackage the empty supply. The program page describes recycling, not payment. People outside the United States should use Brother’s country-specific program information.

Staples Business: check service and pickup arrangements
Staples Business describes free mail-back recycling for ink and toner of any brand and provides a contact for pickup. This is a business-program page, so confirm that the service and collection arrangements apply to your account and location. The page does not establish a cash payment for returned cartridges.

For an empty cartridge, compare the option you can actually use—not just the advertised reward or convenience. Consider:

- What you receive: Cash, conditional store rewards, or free recycling with no stated payment?
- Limits and conditions: Is there a monthly cap or required purchase?
- Effort and cost: Will you need to package and mail it, travel to a participating store, or arrange a pickup?
- Location: Are the program and its specific return method available where you live?
If you have just a few empty cartridges, a nearby eligible drop-off or the manufacturer’s return route may be simpler than trying to sell them. If you have a large quantity, ask the manufacturer or retailer about collection logistics; HP’s stated free pallet-pickup threshold is more than 76 toner cartridges.

- Check the current acceptance list and instructions. Eligibility and local arrangements can change; use the program page for your country or retailer.
- Check the value and conditions. For rewards, verify the cap, qualifying purchase, exclusions, and whether the return method earns rewards. For a buyer, get terms for your exact cartridge before shipping.
- Prepare it as directed. Use the program’s packaging and label instructions. Do not send an item if you are unsure it qualifies.
What to expect financially
The clearest documented financial benefit for ordinary empties among these options is Office Depot and OfficeMax’s conditional store-rewards offer: $2 per qualifying cartridge, up to 10 rewarded cartridges per month, with a qualifying $10 purchase in that month. That is a limited store benefit, not cash proceeds. HP, Brother, and Staples Business describe recycling routes, not payment for spent cartridges. The SellToner promotion concerns unused supplies and cannot be used to estimate what an empty cartridge is worth.
