To recruit a tribesman in Soulmask, repair the mask abilities Deter and Recruit, reduce an eligible NPC to very low health, use Deter to knock them unconscious, keep them alive with healing items and liquid food, and care for them until their recognition reaches the recruitment requirement. Interact with the unconscious NPC again and select Recruit.
The method is deliberate rather than automatic. You must choose a valid target, avoid killing it while lowering its health, protect it after the knockout, and wait for recognition to rise. If any of those conditions fails, the final Recruit command will not appear.
What you need before attempting a capture
Recruitment is controlled by mask progression. Community guidance identifies two required abilities:
- Deter lets you intimidate a weakened tribesman and render them unconscious.
- Recruit enables the final conversion after recognition is high enough.
Repair or unlock both abilities through the mask progression before trying to capture anyone. The exact progression level and green-crystal cost can vary with the game version and server configuration, so use the requirements shown by your own mask rather than relying on an old number. If one node is still unavailable, damaging an NPC will not create a usable recruitment path.

Prepare the rest of the capture kit before starting the fight. Have bandages or another healing item ready, along with liquid food such as broth. You may also want a cleared route to your base or flame altar, since a deterred NPC can be carried while unconscious. A spare tribesman slot is important as well: reaching the recognition threshold does not bypass your mask’s capacity limit.
Prepare the location, not just your inventory
Pick a target near a defensible area whenever possible. The knockout phase leaves the NPC helpless, and another enemy, wildlife or combat spillover can kill it. Removing nearby threats first is safer than trying to protect the body after it has been knocked out. If the fight occurs far from your base, plan how you will move the NPC before using Deter. The Soulmask Wiki describes carrying an unconscious person over your shoulder or transporting one on a llama fitted with an extended seat.

A secure shelter is therefore useful for two reasons: it reduces external damage and gives you a practical place to monitor the NPC while recognition rises.
Which NPCs can be recruited?
The deterrence method applies to ordinary hostile tribesmen rather than every human NPC. The Soulmask Wiki identifies these recruitable categories:

If the Deter prompt never appears even after you have damaged an NPC, verify the NPC’s role before changing your tactics. A protected or excluded role cannot be made recruitable by lowering its health further. This check can save resources and prevent an otherwise avoidable death.
How to identify a sensible target
Among eligible NPCs, select one whose traits and skills fit a job you actually need. Recruitment quality is not standardized, and no published statistical distribution shows how often a particular trait or skill appears. Treat each target as an individual rather than assuming that an outcast, barbarian or regular tribesman will automatically be a good worker or fighter.

Repair Deter and Recruit
Open the mask progression interface and repair both abilities. If either node is unavailable, capture attempts will not produce the required interaction. Costs and unlock points are not fixed across every version or server setting. Confirm that the nodes are active before entering combat.

Pick an eligible target
Choose an outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman. Avoid scouts, plunderers and tribe leaders, which are not valid targets for this process. If you are unsure of a role, observe the NPC and look for the Deter interaction only after it is safely weakened; do not assume every humanoid enemy is recruitable.

Lower the NPC’s health carefully
Deal controlled damage until the NPC is close to death. Guides commonly place the Deter window at roughly 10–20% health. Treat that range as a practical rule of thumb, not a guaranteed value for every current build. Use lighter attacks when the target is near the threshold, stop attacking as soon as the interaction becomes available, and avoid damage-over-time effects or hazards that could finish the NPC after you disengage.
The goal is not to win a normal fight as quickly as possible. It is to leave the target alive in the narrow state where Deter can be used. If a companion or recruited worker is helping you fight, consider ordering it away when the NPC becomes critically wounded so an extra hit does not ruin the attempt.

Use Deter
Stand near the weakened NPC and press the interact key. The wiki reference uses E as the default key, but your bindings may differ. Successful deterrence knocks the NPC unconscious and starts the recognition process. If the prompt is present but the input fails, reposition slightly, make sure you are targeting the NPC rather than nearby loot, and verify your current interact binding.

Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory
Immediately check the NPC’s condition and inventory. Put bandages or another healing item inside so you can treat the damage that caused the knockout. If the game allows the item to be used manually from that inventory, trigger the treatment rather than assuming it will happen automatically. A knockout is not a safety state; the NPC can remain vulnerable and die.

Supply liquid food
Place a liquid food item such as broth in the unconscious NPC’s inventory. Community instructions report that feeding may need to be done manually. Food is important when the NPC remains unconscious for an extended period; healing alone does not remove the risk of starvation. Check that the food is actually consumed or that the feeding action completes instead of merely leaving the item in a slot.

Move the NPC to a safer location when necessary
A deterred NPC can remain unconscious while you transport them. The wiki describes carrying the person over your shoulder or moving them with a llama fitted with an extended seat. Relocate the NPC away from patrols, environmental hazards and the original fight if those dangers could cause another injury. Transport is optional when the area is already safe, but moving the body can make ongoing care much easier.

Let recognition increase
Keep the unconscious NPC alive and continue caring for them while recognition rises. Community guidance considers being at your base or near a flame altar useful, although the exact rate and location behavior can depend on the current build or server settings. Do not repeatedly attack the NPC to make the meter move faster; the procedure depends on maintaining the deterred state.

Check the recognition requirement
The Soulmask Wiki gives a default minimum recognition value of 500. A Steam Community answer displays the requirement as 500/1000, so read the recognition meter and prompt in your own version instead of assuming that every server uses the same display. The denominator may be a UI presentation rather than a universal rule; the actionable test is whether the game offers Recruit.

Choose Recruit
When the meter reaches the required value, interact with the still-unconscious NPC again. The Recruit option should now be available. Select it to add the tribesman to your tribe. If only ordinary inventory or carry actions appear, recognition is not yet complete, the target is not eligible, one of the mask abilities is missing, or the NPC has died.
How to keep an unconscious tribesman alive
The capture window is the most dangerous part of the process. An NPC that is technically knocked out can still die before recruitment finishes, so treat care as an active task rather than a one-time setup.

- Heal early: Open the NPC inventory immediately after Deter and apply bandages or another available healing item. Waiting until the health bar is nearly empty leaves less margin for an interruption.
- Feed manually: Put broth or another liquid food in the inventory and use the feeding action when required. Do not assume merely placing food will consume it.
- Remove external threats: Clear nearby enemies and avoid leaving the body where wildlife, patrols or combat spillover can damage it.
- Check condition regularly: Return to the inventory instead of leaving the NPC unattended for a long trip or fight. Recheck after moving the NPC and after any nearby combat.
- Use a secure location: A base or flame-altar area is commonly recommended for recognition and makes repeated care easier.
- Keep the route short: If you have to carry the NPC, clear the path first. A safe destination is useful only if the transport itself does not expose the body to more danger.
Healing and feeding solve different problems. Bandages address the damage that caused the knockout, while liquid food addresses the NPC’s ongoing needs during the recognition wait. Using only one does not guarantee survival.
There is no published universal timer for how long a particular recruit takes, and no reliable study establishes an average recruitment time. Expect the wait to depend on recognition behavior, server settings and the state of the NPC. Plan supplies for an extended unconscious period instead of assuming the default value implies a fixed number of minutes.

Why the Recruit option is missing
The target is still too healthy
Deter generally appears only after substantial damage. Continue cautiously until the interaction prompt appears, using the 10–20% range only as a guide. Stop attacking once the prompt is visible. If you overshoot and kill the target, there is no recovery for that attempt.
The NPC is excluded
Scouts, plunderers and tribe leaders cannot be recruited through deterrence according to the Soulmask Wiki. Find an outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman instead. The absence of Deter on an excluded role is expected behavior, not a missing button.
Deter or Recruit is not repaired
Without both mask abilities, the knockout or final conversion step cannot work. Recheck the mask progression screen and account for version-specific green-crystal requirements. Unlocking only Deter does not guarantee that the later Recruit command is available.
Recognition has not reached the current threshold
The default figure reported by the wiki is 500, while a Steam Community answer shows a 500/1000 presentation. Use the number and meter displayed by your current game or server. Keep healing and feeding the NPC rather than repeatedly attacking or carrying them away. Recognition is a waiting and care phase, not another combat phase.
The NPC died
A dead NPC cannot be recruited. The next attempt should include prepared healing items, broth, a cleared route and a secure place to wait before you use Deter. Check the body soon after the knockout instead of assuming it will remain stable.
The interaction key is different
The wiki uses E as the default interact key. If E does nothing, check your control settings and use the key bound to interact. Also make sure your reticle is on the unconscious NPC, especially in a crowded camp where several interactable objects may overlap.

The mask’s tribesman limit can block a successful addition even when recognition is complete. Check the current capacity before beginning a long capture. If the limit has been reached, upgrade the relevant progression or make room according to your normal game options before trying again.
The server or build behaves differently
Health windows, recognition displays, key bindings, ability costs and capacity values can vary. Read the current prompt and meter in your own world. A value remembered from another server is not enough to diagnose a missing option.
Recognition: what the meter means in practice
Recognition is the progression gate between a successful knockout and a permanent recruit. Deter starts the process, but it does not immediately add the NPC to your tribe. Keep the NPC unconscious and alive while the value rises. The default minimum cited by the Soulmask Wiki is 500, while a 2024 Steam Community answer presents the requirement as 500/1000. Because the display can differ, the in-game meter and Recruit prompt are more useful than trying to convert one format into another.
Recognition should be treated as a state to monitor. After moving the NPC, reopen the relevant interaction or inventory view and confirm that the body is still unconscious, alive and progressing. If the meter is unchanged, check that the target is in a location where recognition can advance according to your build, and continue providing care. The available guidance does not establish a universal rate, so do not promise a fixed waiting period to another player.

Recruitment limits and what tribesmen do afterward
Your mask progression limits how many tribesmen can belong to the tribe. The Soulmask Wiki reports an initial limit of 3 tribesmen from the repaired Control node. Fully upgrading Connection Enhancement raises the reported limit to 18. Server settings or later patches may modify these values, so the capacity shown in your mask is authoritative for your world.
Capacity is a planning issue as well as an end-stage restriction. A capture consumes time, healing items and food, so check that you have a free slot before starting. Reaching recognition does not create an exception to the limit. If the tribe is full, prepare the necessary progression first rather than leaving a vulnerable NPC unconscious with no available destination.
Once recruited, a tribesman can follow and assist you, defend the base and work at crafting or production stations. The official Steam listing presents automated work and command systems as core features, allowing recruits to contribute instead of remaining passive followers. A recruit’s usefulness still depends on the individual’s traits, skills and suitability for the role; the available sources do not establish a universal distribution of recruit quality. Review the recruit as an individual and assign work that matches its strengths.
Deterrence compared with other possible recruitment situations
Deterrence is the repeatable, player-controlled method described for ordinary hostile tribesmen. Other recruitment opportunities may occur in specific scenarios or when an NPC arrives through normal game events, but their rules are not established here. Use the following comparison when deciding whether to capture a target now.

For a predictable addition to a workforce, deterrence is the practical route. Choose targets for useful skills and traits rather than assuming that every recruit will perform equally. If you need a specific specialist, be prepared to reject an unsuitable recruit and repeat the process with another eligible NPC; no source establishes a guaranteed trait outcome.

Soulmask supports co-op and private servers, and server settings can affect progression values and recruitment behavior. Coordinate with teammates before starting a capture: one player can secure the area while another manages healing, feeding and transport. Make sure everyone knows which NPC is the intended target so a teammate does not accidentally finish it off.
On a shared world, confirm the current mask capacity and recognition display rather than relying on a single player’s memory. A setting that changes costs, limits or progression can make a familiar guide appear wrong. If your group hosts a private server, record the values shown in that server’s mask and prompts so future captures use the same rules.

Version and server-setting caveats
Several commonly quoted values are not guaranteed constants. The 10–20% health window, the default E key, the recognition display, mask-node costs and the 3-to-18 capacity progression can change with patches or server configuration. The 500 recognition minimum is the wiki’s default figure, while the 500/1000 display comes from a 2024 Steam Community answer. Always trust the prompt, meter and capacity shown by the current build you are playing.
No independent study provides recruitment success rates, average recognition time or statistical trait distributions. Plan around the mechanics you can observe rather than an assumed percentage or timer. If a patch changes an interaction, use the current in-game text as the final authority.

Why is there no Recruit option after I knock someone out?

The Soulmask Wiki reports 3 tribesmen from the repaired Control node initially and 18 after fully upgrading Connection Enhancement. Server settings and later patches may change those values; use the capacity shown by your mask.
Can I move a tribesman after using Deter?
Yes. The wiki describes carrying a still-unconscious deterred NPC over your shoulder or transporting it on a llama with an extended seat. Move it to a safe base or flame-altar area if the original location is dangerous.
Can an unconscious NPC die before recruitment?
Yes. Heal the NPC with bandages or another healing item, feed it liquid food, clear external threats and check its condition regularly until recognition is complete.
Does every recruit have the same quality?
No universal quality or trait distribution is established. Evaluate each recruit’s traits, skills and role suitability individually after recruitment.

Unlock Deter and Recruit, choose an eligible outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman, and lower its health carefully until Deter appears. After the knockout, heal and manually feed the NPC, move it to safety if needed, and wait for recognition to reach the value shown in your current game. Then interact again and choose Recruit. Keep the target alive, watch your tribesman capacity, and treat health, recognition and server-specific values as mechanics that can change between builds.
