Start a new game of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Simulate Witcher 2 save enabled. After the White Orchard opening, the Imperial Audience quest in Vizima presents an interrogation by Morvran Voorhis. Your answers recreate five important Witcher 2 world-state decisions: Aryan La Valette, Roche or Iorveth, the Triss rescue, Síle de Tansarville, and Letho.

Console versions cannot directly import a Witcher 2 save, so simulation is the supported way to reproduce those choices. If you turn simulation off, The Witcher 3 applies default assumptions and skips the interrogation.

What “Simulate Witcher 2 save” does

The setting does not restore an entire Witcher 2 playthrough. It gives The Witcher 3 a small set of continuity flags, then asks you to confirm them in character. The game uses those answers to adjust references to earlier events, political context, greetings and, most notably, whether a Letho-related quest branch can appear.

Enable the setting during new-game setup if you want control over the previous game’s outcomes. The questions do not appear immediately. You first play through the White Orchard opening; during Imperial Audience in Vizima, Nilfgaardian commander Morvran Voorhis questions Geralt about the events that shaped the Northern Kingdoms.

If you do not remember your old decisions, you do not need a Witcher 2 save or a completed Witcher 2 playthrough. Choose the answers that fit the version of Geralt you want to role-play. The interrogation is a continuity tool, not a test of whether you remember exact dialogue.

How to enable simulation and reach the questions

  1. Launch a new game in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
  2. At the new-game options, set Simulate Witcher 2 save to Yes.
  3. Play through the opening in White Orchard. The interrogation is not part of the opening tutorial.
  4. Continue until the Imperial Audience quest takes Geralt to Vizima.
  5. Speak with Morvran Voorhis and answer each question about Geralt’s Witcher 2 decisions.

There is no separate import menu for these answers after the interrogation. Treat the conversation as the point where you establish the five flags for that playthrough. If you choose No at new-game setup, the special conversation does not occur and the game proceeds with its defaults; WB Games Support describes this behavior as selecting “No” so that the conversation will not happen.

The five answers Morvran Voorhis asks you to establish

The exact wording can vary with the game’s edition or localization, but the underlying decisions are the same. Select the outcome that matches your Witcher 2 save or your intended role-play.

1. Aryan La Valette: killed or spared

At the beginning of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Geralt can kill Aryan La Valette or spare him during the assault on La Valette Castle. In the simulation, identify whether Aryan survived.

This flag primarily changes how later characters refer to the La Valette episode and how they greet or discuss Geralt’s conduct. It is a continuity choice rather than a major alternate route through The Witcher 3’s main campaign.

2. Roche or Iorveth: which side Geralt supported

The second decision asks which faction Geralt backed in The Witcher 2: Vernon Roche’s Temerian resistance or the Scoia’tael commander Iorveth. Choose the branch you actually played, or the political allegiance that best suits your version of Geralt.

The answer supplies political context for later conversations. Characters may describe the past differently, recognize Geralt’s association with Roche or Iorveth, or frame events in the Northern Kingdoms according to that allegiance. It does not replace The Witcher 3’s central campaign with a separate Roche or Iorveth storyline.

3. The Triss rescue: help the faction or rescue Triss

During the second game, Geralt’s priorities can lead him to help the faction he has joined or to leave that objective and rescue Triss Merigold. The simulation question is about that choice, not whether Geralt generally cares about Triss.

Answer according to the action you took: Geralt either helped the chosen faction with its immediate objective or rescued Triss instead. The resulting flag mostly affects references to that decision and the way the earlier crisis is remembered in later dialogue.

4. Síle de Tansarville: saved or allowed to die

In the Witcher 2 finale, Geralt can intervene to save the sorceress Síle de Tansarville or allow her to die. Tell Morvran which outcome occurred.

This state contributes to the political and personal continuity surrounding the surviving or fallen members of the Lodge and the mages’ role in the previous game’s ending. Its visible effect in The Witcher 3 is chiefly dialogue, recognition and references rather than a different main-campaign structure.

5. Letho: survived or did not survive

The final question concerns Letho of Gulet, the witcher whose actions drive much of The Witcher 2. State whether Geralt allowed Letho to live or killed him.

This is the most consequential of the five flags. Letho’s survival can make the Witcher 3 quest or encounter Ghosts of the Past available. Choosing the opposite state removes that branch. If you want access to that content, select the answer in which Letho survived.

What changes when simulation is enabled

Decision area Primary effect in The Witcher 3
Letho’s survival Can enable Ghosts of the Past; the opposite state removes that branch.
Roche or Iorveth Changes political context, dialogue and character references.
Aryan La Valette Changes continuity references and some later reactions.
Triss rescue Changes how the previous crisis is described in later conversations.
Síle de Tansarville Changes references to her fate and the earlier political events.

Only Letho’s flag is identified as opening a distinct Witcher 3 quest branch. The other four are best understood as world-state and continuity changes: they make the imported history feel consistent, but they do not create a second version of the main story.

Simulation on versus simulation off

Consideration Simulation on Simulation off
Control over Witcher 2 decisions You answer for all five flags during Imperial Audience. The game uses its default assumptions.
Morvran Voorhis interrogation Appears after the White Orchard opening. Does not appear.
Letho-related content You can set Letho as surviving, preserving access to the possible Ghosts of the Past branch. You accept the default Letho state.
Dialogue and references Continuity reflects the answers you select. Continuity follows the preset world state.
Best choice for Players who remember their Witcher 2 run or want to role-play specific history. Players who prefer to start without revisiting earlier decisions or want the default setup.

Simulation does not make the game harder, add a separate difficulty mode or require you to replay Witcher 2. Its purpose is narrative continuity. The practical trade-off is control versus convenience: enabling it takes a short conversation but lets you decide which version of Geralt’s past the game recognizes.

Which answers should you choose?

If you have a Witcher 2 save or remember your playthrough

Reproduce the five outcomes as you remember them. Consistency is the main benefit: characters’ comments, political references and Letho’s availability will line up with the story you already experienced.

If you remember the broad story but not every choice

Use the decision descriptions above to identify the branch you followed. The Roche/Iorveth choice is usually the easiest anchor because it defines the political path of the second game. From there, decide whether Aryan lived, whether Geralt prioritized Triss, what happened to Síle and whether Letho survived.

If you are playing The Witcher 3 first

Simulation is still optional. Choose “Yes” if you want to set a deliberate backstory. For a playthrough with the greatest amount of optional Witcher 2 continuity, set Letho to survived and then select the remaining outcomes according to the Geralt you want to portray. This recommendation concerns access to a possible quest branch, not a claim that one moral choice is canon.

If you want to avoid spoilers

Leave simulation off or choose answers without researching the consequences. The interrogation itself reveals that these earlier decisions matter, and the Letho answer can expose the existence of later content. Turning simulation off is the cleanest option if you want The Witcher 3 to establish its own past without prompting you.

Console save import and platform limits

Directly importing a Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings save into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not available on consoles. CD PROJEKT RED Support states that console players can only simulate their saves by answering questions about Witcher 2 events. Therefore, a console player should not spend time looking for a hidden USB, cloud-save or in-game import command; the Morvran interrogation is the supported route.

Platform behavior can vary with current patches and editions. The official product information for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition lists Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as included and identifies current-generation platform support. Check the game’s current platform-specific documentation and patch notes if an option is missing or a save behaves unexpectedly, because packaging and compatibility details can change.

Edition and save considerations

The five simulation questions belong to the base game’s new-game flow, so owning the expansions is not required merely to answer them. The Complete Edition bundles the two major expansions with the main game, but the presence of those expansions does not turn simulation into a full Witcher 2 save restoration.

The official product information also states that save files remain compatible. In practical terms, decide on simulation before beginning the playthrough you intend to keep. If you start with simulation off and later want different historical flags, the dependable solution is to begin a new game with simulation enabled rather than assuming an existing save can be retroactively re-interrogated.

Troubleshooting the missing interrogation

You never see the option at new-game setup

  • Confirm that you started a new game rather than loading an existing save.
  • Look specifically for Simulate Witcher 2 save in the new-game settings and set it to Yes.
  • Check that the game is fully updated and that you are using the edition and platform you intend to play.

You enabled simulation but have not been questioned

The conversation is delayed until after the White Orchard opening. Continue the story to Vizima and the Imperial Audience quest; Morvran Voorhis conducts the interrogation there.

You selected “No” by mistake

Choosing “No” suppresses the conversation and leaves the game with its default assumptions. If those defaults are not the history you want, start a new game and enable simulation before entering the world. Keep the original save if you want to preserve its progress.

You expected every Witcher 2 event to change

Simulation covers five specific flags, not every quest outcome, romance decision or inventory item from the previous game. Most visible differences are contextual dialogue and references. Letho’s survival is the exception with the clearest effect on a distinct quest branch.

A practical decision checklist

  • New game: enable Simulate Witcher 2 save.
  • After White Orchard: continue to Vizima and start Imperial Audience.
  • Aryan: choose killed or spared.
  • Faction: choose Roche or Iorveth.
  • Triss: choose faction objective or Triss rescue.
  • Síle: choose saved or allowed to die.
  • Letho: choose survived or did not survive; survival preserves the possibility of Ghosts of the Past.
  • Uncertain memory: select the outcome that matches your intended Geralt rather than guessing that one answer is universally correct.

The shortest correct answer is therefore: enable simulation, wait for Morvran Voorhis in Vizima, and answer the five questions. Console players cannot import the old save directly, while players who turn simulation off accept the game’s defaults and skip the interrogation.
