Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026. That change does not normally delete photos and videos already stored in OneDrive: they remain in the Microsoft account and can be opened in the OneDrive app or on the web. What disappears is the connected Gallery view.
To put pictures back on a Samsung phone, download the originals from OneDrive to local storage. To recover an item that was genuinely deleted, use OneDrive’s Recycle Bin promptly. For new pictures, turn on OneDrive Camera backup; it replaces automatic uploads, but it is not the same bidirectional Gallery integration.
What changed on September 30, 2026
Samsung Support Australia announced on September 29, 2026 that Gallery sync with OneDrive would end on September 30, 2026. The Samsung–Microsoft account connection is also deleted. Microsoft’s transition guidance confirms that existing files remain unchanged in OneDrive, although they stop appearing through the connected Samsung Gallery view.

This distinction is the key to recovery:
- Missing from Samsung Gallery: the file may still be safely stored in OneDrive and simply needs to be downloaded.
- Missing from OneDrive as well: check the Recycle Bin and any other copy you maintain.
- New photos after the shutdown: they will not upload through the old Gallery connection; use OneDrive Camera backup instead.
First, find out whether the photo is missing or only hidden from Gallery
Check the OneDrive app
- Open OneDrive on the Samsung phone or another device.
- Open the Photos view and look for the picture or video. Also check the folder that previously held Gallery-synced items; the location depends on how the album was stored.
- If the item is not there, sign out or switch accounts as appropriate and sign in to the Microsoft account that was linked to Samsung Gallery.
Your Samsung account and Microsoft account do not have to use the same email address. Signing in with the Samsung account, or with a different Microsoft account, can make a perfectly intact OneDrive library appear to be missing.
Check OneDrive on the web
Use the OneDrive website while signed in to the linked Microsoft account. The web view is useful when the phone has limited storage, when the app has not finished indexing, or when you need to distinguish an account problem from a phone problem. If the file appears on the web but not in the app, the cloud copy is still present; use the app’s download command or download it from the web.
Download photos and videos back to the phone
Downloading creates a local copy that Samsung Gallery can index independently of the discontinued integration. Check available phone storage before starting, especially for long videos or an entire album. Samsung cautions that only files that fit the phone’s available storage can be saved locally.
Download an entire album
Samsung’s documented Gallery route, available while the integration was active, was:
- Open Gallery.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Choose Gallery sync with OneDrive.
- Tap Download Originals.
- Choose the album and tap Download.
Because the Gallery connection has now ended, that setting may no longer be shown. In that case, open the album in OneDrive and use its download option instead. The exact button placement can vary by OneDrive version.
Download selected items
For individual photos or videos, Samsung documented this Gallery path:
- Open Gallery and go to Photos.
- Select the photos or videos.
- Tap More.
- Tap Download.
After the shutdown, select the same items in OneDrive and choose Download there if Gallery no longer offers the command. OneDrive can also download files directly to the phone.

Confirm that the local copy is usable
- Wait for the download to finish before closing OneDrive or switching networks.
- Open Samsung Gallery and allow a few moments for media indexing.
- Check a downloaded photo’s details to confirm it is stored on the phone rather than represented only by a cloud thumbnail.
- For large batches, download in smaller groups so a full phone does not interrupt the whole operation.
Menu names and availability can differ by device software, carrier, market, and rollout. If a documented label is absent, the OneDrive app is the post-shutdown path for retrieving the cloud originals.
Restore photos that were actually deleted
The former Gallery connection was bidirectional, not an independent archive. A deletion or other change made through Gallery or another OneDrive endpoint could propagate to synced devices, and deleted files could be moved to OneDrive’s Recycle Bin. If an item is absent from both Gallery and the normal OneDrive folders, inspect the bin immediately.
Restore in the OneDrive app
- Open OneDrive.
- Open the Me or profile tab.
- Tap Recycle bin.
- Select the photo or video.
- Open More options and tap Restore.
Samsung’s US support page states that OneDrive photos and videos remain in the Recycle Bin for 93 days. That is the retention period stated for the described support flow; account type or an organization’s policy can affect what applies to a particular account. Restoration returns the item to its original location.
Restore through the web
Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the OneDrive website, open the deleted-file or Recycle Bin view, select the item, and use the restore command. Web labels can change, but the operation is the same: choose the deleted file and restore it to its original folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the Recycle Bin is empty
OneDrive cannot promise recovery of a file that is absent from the account and outside the applicable Recycle Bin period. Check other phones, computers, memory cards, USB backups, or another cloud service where you may have copied the originals. Avoid deleting or moving more files until you have established which account and folder contain the surviving copy.
Keep uploading new Samsung photos with OneDrive Camera backup
Microsoft’s transition guidance identifies OneDrive Camera backup as the continuing upload method. It uploads new photos and videos to OneDrive, but it does not recreate Gallery’s former album browsing or bidirectional synchronization.
- Open the OneDrive app and sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to use.
- Open the account profile.
- Select Camera backup.
- Confirm the account shown for the backup.
- Turn Camera backup on.
- When prompted, grant OneDrive access to all photos and videos.
Automatic uploads require all of the following:
- Camera backup is enabled.
- OneDrive has permission to access the phone’s photos and videos.
- The Microsoft account has sufficient storage quota.
- The app can complete its upload process, usually over the phone’s available network connection.
After setup, take a test photo and verify that it appears in OneDrive before relying on the workflow. Camera backup is a one-way upload arrangement: a photo uploaded to OneDrive is not automatically a synchronized, editable Gallery album in the old sense.

Choose the right preservation method
The best route depends on whether you are recovering existing cloud files, preserving new photos, or creating a second local copy.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | Primary goal | Copy location | Visible in Samsung Gallery? | Storage consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Download Originals or OneDrive download | Recover existing photos and videos | Local phone storage | Yes, after Gallery indexes the downloaded files | Requires enough free phone space for the selected files |
| OneDrive Camera backup | Upload new photos and videos | OneDrive cloud storage | Not as the former bidirectional Gallery integration | Requires available OneDrive quota |
| Compatible USB-C flash drive | Create an additional local copy after downloading | Removable local storage | Files can be copied back to the phone for Gallery access | Check the phone’s USB-C/OTG support and the drive’s file-system compatibility |
A USB-C flash drive is optional, not required for OneDrive recovery. Samsung’s cited instructions do not endorse a particular drive. Treat it as a second copy only after confirming that the phone can mount it and that the drive has enough capacity.
Plan storage before moving a large library
There are two separate capacity limits to check. Downloading existing files consumes space on the Samsung phone, while Camera backup consumes space in the Microsoft account. A phone can have plenty of OneDrive capacity but not enough local room for an album, or enough phone space but a full OneDrive quota that prevents new uploads.
Start with a small group of representative photos and a video. Confirm that the files open locally, then estimate the room needed for the rest. Albums containing long videos can require substantially more space than their item count suggests. If the phone cannot hold the entire library, download the most important items first, work in batches, or use a compatible USB-C/OTG drive as another local destination.
When Camera backup reports a quota problem, review the Microsoft account’s storage and use Microsoft’s current storage-plan options if additional cloud capacity is appropriate. Prices, plan names, and availability can change, so check the account’s own offer rather than relying on an old price. Buying extra cloud space does not create local phone copies; it only gives Camera backup room to upload.

The Samsung–Microsoft link is deleted when the integration ends. That is why an album that was easy to browse in Gallery may no longer have the same Gallery presentation even though its files remain in OneDrive. The files are not automatically moved into a new Samsung account or copied into the phone’s storage.
OneDrive is therefore the source to inspect first. The Photos view may show the media chronologically, while the folder view may reveal the folder that held a particular album. If you need the old Gallery experience, the practical replacement is to download the originals and let Gallery index the local files. If you only need access from multiple devices, leaving the files in OneDrive may be sufficient.

Do not disconnect or delete a surviving cloud copy merely because Gallery no longer lists it. First open several items in OneDrive, verify the correct Microsoft account, and make any local or removable-storage copies you need. Only then decide whether to reorganize folders or remove duplicates.
Use a careful migration checklist
- Identify the account: write down the Microsoft email address that contains the library; it may differ from the Samsung account address.
- Inventory the files: check OneDrive Photos and folders, and note albums or date ranges that matter.
- Check both capacities: review free phone storage and the Microsoft account quota.
- Recover deletions first: restore anything in Recycle Bin before it reaches the stated retention limit.
- Download in batches: begin with irreplaceable photos and important videos, then verify each batch in Gallery.
- Create a second copy: if practical, copy verified files to compatible removable storage or another existing backup.
- Enable Camera backup: select the intended Microsoft account, grant access to all photos and videos, and test with a new picture.
- Monitor the first uploads: confirm that new files appear in OneDrive and that quota remains available.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: enabling a new upload workflow while assuming that it has already recovered older files. Camera backup handles new captures; it does not replace the separate download and Recycle Bin steps for the existing library.
Troubleshoot the most common recovery problems
The photo is not in OneDrive Photos
- Check the folders view as well as Photos; an album may map to a normal OneDrive folder.
- Verify the Microsoft account, particularly if the Samsung and Microsoft email addresses differ.
- Use the web view to rule out an app-indexing problem.
- Search by filename or date if you know either value.
Download stops or reports insufficient space
- Check the phone’s free storage and remove or move nonessential files.
- Download a smaller group rather than an entire album.
- Use a compatible external USB-C/OTG drive as an additional destination if your phone supports it.
The downloaded file does not appear in Gallery
- Confirm that the file completed downloading and is stored locally.
- Close and reopen Gallery, then allow time for media indexing.
- Check whether the download went to a folder hidden from Gallery by a device setting or file marker.
The Recycle Bin has no copy
Make sure you are viewing the correct Microsoft account and that the item was not permanently removed. Samsung’s 93-day figure is not a guarantee that every account retains every item for exactly that period. If the file is outside the applicable retention window and no other copy exists, OneDrive may not be able to restore it.
New pictures are not uploading
- Open OneDrive profile settings and confirm Camera backup is on.
- Review the app’s permission for all photos and videos, not limited access to a few selected items.
- Confirm that the intended Microsoft account has free quota.
- Take a new test photo and check OneDrive rather than relying on the old Gallery status.
Protect the recovered library
Once important files are back on the phone, keep at least one additional copy. A practical arrangement is the OneDrive cloud copy plus downloaded originals on the phone, with an optional compatible USB-C drive for another local copy. Open representative photos and videos from each destination so you know the copies are complete rather than thumbnails or interrupted downloads.
Do not treat Camera backup as a substitute for checking storage and account access. If the OneDrive quota fills, new pictures cannot upload until space is available. Likewise, a local phone copy can disappear if the phone is lost or reset. Separating the cloud and local copies reduces the chance that one deletion or device failure removes every version.

The Bottom Line
Samsung Gallery’s OneDrive sync ended September 30, 2026, but that did not normally erase files already in OneDrive. Find the correct Microsoft account, restore deleted items from the Recycle Bin within the applicable retention period, and download originals to local storage if you want them visible in Gallery. For future photos, enable OneDrive Camera backup and keep a second copy when the pictures matter.
