Stop using the SD card, decline every format prompt, and do not run a repair utility while the card is producing read errors. If the card still reads consistently, scan it with recovery software such as PhotoRec and save every result to a different healthy drive. If it disconnects, stalls, or reports input/output (I/O) errors, make a sector-level image with a recovery-oriented tool such as GNU ddrescue first, then scan the image. No program can recreate bytes that the card can no longer return, so some files may remain incomplete or unrecoverable.

Choose the safest recovery path first

The symptom determines what you should do next. A card with damaged directory information but stable reads is a logical-recovery case. A card that repeatedly disconnects, stalls, or reports I/O errors may be physically degrading; repeatedly asking it to read can make the situation worse.

What you see Safest first move Important limitation
Files vanished, or folders are missing, but the card opens and reads reliably Run a recovery scan such as PhotoRec. Save results to another drive. Recovered files may have generic names and no original folder structure.
The card was formatted Stop using it and scan for remaining data before taking any more photos or copying files. Continued use can overwrite sectors that still contain recoverable data.
Repeated read errors, disconnects, or very slow/stalled access Avoid filesystem repair. Create an image with a tool designed for read errors, such as GNU ddrescue, or seek qualified professional help for irreplaceable data. Unreadable sectors and files that depend on them may be permanently damaged.
A removable card in a phone cannot be connected to the computer Remove it and use a compatible USB SD card reader. A reader supplies access only; it does not repair or recover data.

Why your first actions matter

Stop writing immediately

Do not take another picture, copy a file, rename folders, or install software onto the card. Do not use the card as a destination for recovered files. New writes can occupy sectors that still hold deleted or damaged data. PhotoRec documentation states: “Remember, you must avoid writing anything on the filesystem that was holding the data.”

Decline formatting and automatic repair

When Windows, macOS, a camera, or a phone says that the card must be formatted, choose Cancel, Eject, or a similar non-destructive option. The SD Card Formatter user manual warns: “Once formatting has started, all recorded information will no longer be available.” Formatting changes the filesystem’s ordinary access; it does not prove that every underlying byte has been erased, so recovery software may still find portions of files. However, every subsequent write reduces what can be recovered.

Do not repair a failing card

Filesystem-repair commands change metadata while they work. On media that is returning I/O errors, those changes can destroy information that a recovery tool could otherwise copy. The GNU ddrescue manual states: “Never try to repair a file system on a drive with I/O errors; you will probably lose even more data.” Treat that warning as a stop sign when reads are unstable.

Identify whether the problem is logical or physical

Signs of logical corruption

  • The card is detected every time you insert it.
  • Folders open normally, or most files can be copied, but some photos are missing or unreadable.
  • The operating system reports a damaged or unknown filesystem without repeatedly disconnecting.
  • A camera shows an empty card even though it previously contained images.

These symptoms can result from deleted files, damaged directory information, or a reformatted partition. A signature-based scan can often find file contents even when the filesystem index is unusable.

Signs of physical or unstable access

  • The card disappears and reappears during a copy.
  • Reads freeze for long periods, repeatedly return I/O errors, or make the computer ask to format the card again and again.
  • Capacity is reported inconsistently, or the card becomes unusually hot.
  • The card or its contacts show visible damage.

These signs call for imaging rather than repeated scans. If the data is irreplaceable, stop after a minimal access check and consider a qualified recovery service. The available documentation supports this risk-based choice but does not establish any particular provider, price, location, or success guarantee.

Step 1: Preserve the card and make one controlled access check

  1. Power off the camera, phone, or other device before removing the card. This avoids an additional write during removal.
  2. Set the card aside and label it so it is not accidentally returned to a camera for reuse.
  3. If the card has no visible damage and has not been repeatedly failing, try one compatible card reader or one different computer. This can distinguish a bad slot or cable from a card problem.
  4. For a phone’s removable card, use a compatible USB SD card reader rather than trying to recover through the phone’s normal file-transfer interface. The reader only exposes the card; it is not a repair tool.
  5. If the card disconnects, stalls, or produces I/O errors during this check, stop testing it. Do not keep reconnecting it in the hope that a later attempt will work.

Never initialize, partition, format, “scan and fix,” or otherwise modify the card during this check. The goal is only to determine whether it can be read consistently.

Step 2: Recover from a card that reads reliably

Use a signature-based scanner when the filesystem is damaged

PhotoRec is free, open-source recovery software that searches for file signatures rather than relying entirely on a working directory structure. That makes it useful when a partition or filesystem is corrupted, when files were deleted, or after a card was reformatted but its old data has not yet been overwritten.

Prepare a separate destination

  • Use a healthy internal drive or external drive with more free space than the data you expect to recover.
  • Do not use the SD card as the destination, even if it appears to have unused space.
  • If the recovered material is valuable, create a dedicated destination folder and avoid running other cleanup or synchronization jobs against it during recovery.

PhotoRec’s instructions specifically require a destination other than the source filesystem. Writing results to the card can overwrite files that have not yet been found.

Run the PhotoRec workflow

  1. Connect the card through a stable reader and start PhotoRec. Select the SD card by its reported device and capacity; do not select your computer’s internal drive by mistake.
  2. Select the partition that contained the files. If the partition table or filesystem is damaged, choose the option to search the whole available area as described in PhotoRec’s documentation.
  3. Choose the filesystem family requested by the program. This selection describes the filesystem that held the files, not the filesystem of your destination drive.
  4. Choose whether to scan only unallocated space or the whole partition. A whole-partition search is appropriate when the filesystem itself is corrupted or the card was reformatted.
  5. When prompted for a destination, navigate to the separate healthy drive. Confirm the destination before starting; the source must never be the output location.
  6. Let the scan complete. Stopping early may leave recoverable files undiscovered, but if the card begins disconnecting or producing new errors, stop and switch to the imaging workflow below.
  7. Review the output on the destination drive. PhotoRec commonly assigns generic names and may place files in a flat set of result folders instead of restoring the original folders.

Sort and verify the results

Work only on the recovered copies. Group photos by file type and, where available, embedded capture date. Open a representative sample from every result folder, including large files and files near the end of the scan. A thumbnail or filename alone is not proof that a file is complete. A photo that opens with a damaged lower portion, a document that stops partway through, or a video that will not seek may depend on unreadable sectors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Image a card that reports I/O errors before scanning

Why an image is safer than repeated direct scans

GNU ddrescue is designed to copy readable sectors first, record problem areas, and resume from a mapfile. You can then run recovery software against the image instead of repeatedly stressing the original card. The GNU ddrescue manual identifies the current documented release as version 1.30, dated 1 January 2026.

Set up the source and destination safely

  • Use a destination drive with enough free space for the card’s full reported capacity, not merely the amount of visible files.
  • Ensure the destination is healthy and mounted with write access.
  • Identify the source by its size and connection details. Never assume that the first device listed is the SD card.
  • Use a new image file or a dedicated empty destination. Recheck the direction of every source and destination argument before starting; reversing them can overwrite the card or another drive.
  • Keep the mapfile with the image so an interrupted operation can resume rather than starting over.

A command-line imaging tool is not a “click and hope” repair utility. If you cannot positively identify the source, do not understand the destination risk, or the card repeatedly disconnects, stop and obtain qualified help instead of experimenting with irreplaceable data.

What to do during imaging

  1. Connect the card directly or through the most stable reader available and avoid hubs that cause disconnects.
  2. Start the imaging operation with the SD card as the read-only source and the separate drive as the destination image location.
  3. Allow the first pass to copy easy-to-read sectors. ddrescue’s mapfile records what succeeded and what failed.
  4. If the reader or card disconnects, stop safely, reconnect once, and resume using the same image and mapfile. Do not delete the partial image.
  5. When imaging is complete, preserve the original card. Perform all subsequent scans against the image whenever the software supports it.

Imaging cannot manufacture missing data. It gives recovery software a stable copy of the sectors that could be read and prevents every scan attempt from operating on the failing original.

Step 4: Scan the image and save files elsewhere

Point PhotoRec or another appropriate recovery program at the image file or virtual disk, not the original card. Use the whole-image search when partition information is missing or the card was reformatted. Keep the output on a third healthy drive when possible; at minimum, never write it into the image or back onto the SD card.

Expect the same trade-offs as a direct scan: signature recovery can locate photo, video, and document contents without the original filesystem index, but it generally cannot restore original filenames, folder hierarchy, or application-specific metadata that was stored only in damaged directory records.

What to do when the card says it needs to be formatted

Before you click Format

Cancel the prompt, eject the card normally if the system allows it, and follow the reliable-read or I/O-error path above. A format prompt often means the operating system cannot interpret the filesystem; it is not evidence that the media is empty.

If you already formatted the card

Stop using it immediately. Do not take new pictures, copy files, or create folders. Scan the card or an image of it for signatures, selecting a whole-partition search when the old structure is no longer visible. Formatting may leave some old bytes recoverable, but any new data can reuse those sectors. Recovery quality depends on which sectors were overwritten and whether the original files were fragmented.

After recovery is checked

Only after you have opened and backed up the recovered files should you consider reformatting the card for future use. If it previously produced errors or disconnected, do not trust it for important photos merely because a later format succeeds.

Common failures and the safest response

Failure Likely meaning Response
The card is visible but every folder is empty Directory information may be damaged or files may have been deleted. Stop writing and run a signature-based scan; do not create replacement folders on the card.
The computer repeatedly asks to format The filesystem cannot be mounted normally. Cancel the prompt and scan, or image first if reads are unstable.
Recovery finds files with random names The scanner recovered content without intact directory records. Sort by type and embedded metadata; do not rename files on the source card.
PhotoRec freezes at the same area The card may contain unreadable sectors. Stop direct scanning and create an image with a mapfile; scan the image.
The card vanishes during imaging The reader, connector, controller, or flash media may be unstable. Use one controlled reconnection and resume; repeated failures justify professional recovery.
Recovered photos open with blocks or missing sections Part of the file was in sectors that could not be read. Try other recovered copies, but do not expect software to recreate missing bytes.

When professional recovery is the better choice

Consider stopping DIY attempts when the card contains unique family photographs, legal records, or business material; the card disconnects repeatedly; the contacts or shell are damaged; imaging cannot progress; or you are unsure which device is the source. Every additional power cycle, scan, or repair attempt can change the evidence available to a specialist. Ask any service to explain whether it works from an image or the original media, what happens if no files are recoverable, and how your data will be returned. No general success percentage is established by the cited technical documentation, so treat guarantees and impressive recovery-rate numbers skeptically.

How to verify that recovery is complete enough to use

  1. Make a second copy of the recovered output on another healthy drive before reorganizing it.
  2. Open photos from the beginning, middle, and end of the recovered set, plus files of each format you need.
  3. Check image dimensions, document page counts, and video duration where your applications expose them.
  4. Compare the number of recovered files with any camera counter, backup catalog, or import log you already have. This is a comparison, not proof that every missing file can be recovered.
  5. Keep the original card unchanged until verification and backup are finished.

If a file is incomplete because its sectors were unreadable, neither PhotoRec nor ddrescue can infer the missing content. Preserve the partial file in case a future specialist can use additional information, but label it as damaged rather than relying on it as the only copy.

Preventing a repeat

  • Eject the card through the camera, phone, or operating system before removing it.
  • Keep at least one independent backup of important photos; a card should be treated as working storage, not the archive.
  • Replace a card that has shown unexplained disconnects or read errors instead of returning it to critical use after a successful format.
  • Use a stable, compatible reader and avoid bending the card or forcing it into a slot.
  • After a shoot, copy files to a computer and verify that the copies open before deleting or reusing the card.

Answers to the questions people ask most

How do I recover photos from a corrupted SD card?

Stop writing, cancel format prompts, and determine whether the card reads reliably. Use PhotoRec against a stable card and save results to another drive. If it produces I/O errors or disconnects, image it with GNU ddrescue first and scan the image.

Can I recover files if the card says it needs to be formatted?

Often some data may remain, but do not format it or continue using it. Cancel the prompt and perform a recovery scan; use a whole-partition search when the filesystem is not recognizable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will recovery restore my original filenames and folders?

Not necessarily. PhotoRec’s signature-based method can recover file contents while losing the directory records that contain names and folder paths, so generic names and reorganizing are normal.

Is a USB card reader a recovery tool?

No. It provides a connection for a removable card, which is useful when a computer or phone has no suitable slot. Recovery software and, for failing media, an imaging tool are separate steps.

Should I run a filesystem repair utility first?

Not when the card reports I/O errors or behaves unstably. Repair writes metadata and can reduce later recovery. Image the card first or seek professional help.

Can software recover every photo?

No. A file that relies on unreadable sectors may be incomplete, and no software can reconstruct bytes the card no longer returns. The cited documentation provides no reliable recovery-rate percentage.
