Stop playing the affected slot until you know what reset. “Timeline reset” can mean a deliberate reset command, a death that returns you to a checkpoint, a chapter restart, or a missing or damaged save. Those events have different recovery paths. Look for a Preserve Timeline, Load Previous Save, Last Inn Rest, chapter checkpoint, or another save slot before confirming another reset. Some games permanently erase the active timeline when you confirm the destructive option.
First identify what actually happened
The word “reset” is not a standard save-system term. A loop RPG may reset only the current run, rewind the character to a checkpoint, restart a chapter, or delete completed and New Game Plus data. Match the symptom to the event before attempting recovery.

Write down the exact menu label, the slot name, the platform, and the last time the progress was visible. That information determines which restore points are still safe to try.
Do this immediately to protect the remaining data
- Stop writing to the affected slot. Do not begin another loop, chapter, or New Game Plus chapter. New data can replace the only recoverable state. Final Fantasy XIV’s New Game Plus instructions warn that starting a new chapter deletes data currently in progress, and leaving New Game Plus removes its in-progress data.
- Do not confirm another reset. If a prompt offers Preserve Timeline, Reset Timeline, Start Over, or a similar choice, select the non-destructive option or back out. In Oxenfree, the Reset Timeline command wipes both the New Game Plus save and the original completed save.
- Record the current screen. A photograph or screenshot of the warning, slot list, and timestamps can prevent a mistaken choice when several saves have similar names.
- Quit through the game’s normal menu. Avoid repeated forced shutdowns while a save icon is visible. A clean exit preserves whatever state the game has already written.
- Identify every available restore point. Check the active slot, other manual slots, chapter checkpoints, inn or dwelling saves, and any platform-managed local or cloud copy that the game explicitly exposes. Do not download or synchronize a backup until you have compared its timestamp with the current slot.
Use the least destructive restore option first
Preserve a completed timeline
Some loop games separate the completed timeline from the new run. If the menu offers Preserve Timeline, choose it before entering another loop. Netflix Games Help Center documentation for Oxenfree distinguishes Preserve Timeline from Reset Timeline: the former keeps the original completed save, while the latter wipes both the New Game Plus and original completed saves. The wording matters more than the familiar “New Game Plus” label; read the entire warning instead of assuming the old run is protected.

Load the previous checkpoint or rest
After a death, use the game’s named restore command rather than starting a new run. Dragon’s Dogma 2 provides Load from Last Inn Rest, which returns the player to the save created at the previous rest at an inn or dwelling. That is different from a full timeline reset: progress after that rest is lost, but earlier data remains available. If the title offers several checkpoints, select the newest one that predates the unwanted rollback.
Choose a separate chapter slot
Chapter replay systems often use the current slot unless you explicitly create another one. Life Is Strange documentation explains that restarting a chapter in the current slot deletes progress beyond that chapter, while a separate save slot allows the chapter to be replayed without replacing the existing run. If you are unsure which mode the menu uses, create or select an empty slot first and verify the destination shown on the confirmation screen.
Recovery path for an intentional timeline reset
- Return to the title screen or save-management menu without starting another loop.
- Read the reset description word for word. Look for separate entries for the original completed save, New Game Plus, and the current run.
- Select Preserve Timeline, Load Previous Save, or an equivalent option if it is offered.
- If the game lists multiple slots, sort by the last-played time and open the newest slot that still contains the completed timeline.
- Only after confirming that the desired save loads should you begin a new loop.
If the warning explicitly says that both timelines will be wiped, treat the operation as irreversible within the game. Do not rely on the phrase “New Game Plus” to imply that the original save is safe; Oxenfree demonstrates the opposite behavior.

Recovery path after dying
A death rollback usually restores the last checkpoint, but the checkpoint may be tied to a specific object or location rather than the last action. Look for these commands in the death or continue screen:
- Continue: loads the game’s selected checkpoint.
- Load from Last Inn Rest: in Dragon’s Dogma 2, returns to the previous save made at an inn or dwelling.
- Load Previous Save: opens a manual or automatic save that predates the death.
- Restart Loop: begins a new cycle and may discard the current one; use it only after checking the other choices.
Expect to lose actions after the selected checkpoint, such as loot collected, conversations, or travel. That loss is normal rollback, not necessarily corruption. If the same checkpoint repeatedly fails to load, stop retrying and test an older slot or an alternate checkpoint so that a damaged state is not repeatedly rewritten.
Recovery path after restarting a chapter
Chapter selection is often a fork rather than a harmless preview. Restarting in the active slot can intentionally remove every event after the selected chapter. Before confirming:

- Check whether the menu says New Slot, Separate Save, or Overwrite Current Slot.
- Choose a new slot when you want to experiment or collect a different ending.
- Keep the original slot untouched until the restarted chapter has loaded successfully.
- After playing, verify which slot is selected before saving again.
If you already restarted in the original slot, look for another slot or an earlier platform backup. The game may have no in-game command that reconstructs the deleted post-chapter events.

A missing slot is different from a deliberate reset, and the safe order is different too. First, close the game and avoid creating a replacement save with the same slot identifier. Then:
- Reopen the game’s load screen and check every profile, character, and slot.
- Check whether the platform offers a local-versus-cloud choice, and compare timestamps before accepting synchronization.
- Use the older copy only when its date predates the loss and it contains the expected character or chapter.
- If the game reports corruption, preserve the original copy and follow the title’s official support procedure rather than deleting it to “fix” the list.
Cloud behavior, save-file locations, and restoration tools vary by title and platform. A cloud copy can be newer than the local file and may already contain the reset, so automatic synchronization is not automatically a recovery.

What New Game Plus may carry over
There is no universal New Game Plus contract. A title can carry equipment while resetting story flags, retain character data while changing the world state, or wipe everything except a single completion marker. Confirm each category separately.

Before resetting, make a short inventory of what you care about: character level, equipment, abilities, relationship or story flags, collectibles, and completion records. Then verify each item in the title’s own New Game Plus rules. Carry-over in one game is not evidence for another.

- What triggers rollback? Is it death, a manual reset, chapter selection, or completion of a loop?
- What persists? Separate knowledge and story flags from level, inventory, abilities, and crafting status.
- How many restore points exist? Count active slots, manual slots, chapter checkpoints, inn or dwelling saves, and platform backups.
- Is the action reversible? A Preserve or Load option indicates a recoverable branch; a wipe warning indicates a destructive operation.
- Are backups restricted? Challenge modes may disable manual saves, cloud synchronization, or cross-progression.
This checklist prevents a common mistake: treating a loop reset, a chapter restart, and a death reload as interchangeable because all three return the character to an earlier point.
Challenge modes can remove your safety net
Some difficulty or immersion modes deliberately disable normal recovery. Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s Full Synchronization mode is an explicit example: Ubisoft Help states that dying while it is active resets progress to the end of Assassin training at Alamut and disables cross-progression, cloud-save synchronization, and manual saves for that save. In such a mode, an older backup may not exist, and repeatedly attempting the same run will not create one.
Check the mode’s save restrictions before beginning it. If manual and cloud saves are disabled, treat every death as a permanent run boundary and avoid activating the mode on a slot that contains progress you cannot replace.
When no in-game restore exists
If the game explicitly says that both timelines are wiped, or the only slot has already been overwritten, there may be no supported in-game recovery. Do not trust utilities that promise to reconstruct story flags without title-specific documentation; they can damage the remaining save and may violate platform rules.
At that point, preserve the current files, note the exact reset action and time, and contact the game publisher’s support channel with the platform, edition, account or profile identifier, slot name, and screenshots of the warning. Support cannot guarantee restoration, but precise information helps distinguish a designed wipe from a synchronization or corruption problem.
Prevent the next lost timeline
- Keep the main completed run in its own slot before entering New Game Plus.
- Use a second slot for experiments, alternate endings, or chapter replays.
- Read every confirmation screen, especially text containing delete, overwrite, wipe, or in progress.
- After resting or reaching a checkpoint, confirm that the save icon has finished before closing the game.
- For platform backups, compare timestamps and character details before synchronizing.
- Document which items and flags the title promises to carry into New Game Plus.
- Do not enable a no-backup challenge mode on your only valuable slot.

The practical bottom line
Recovery depends on the exact event, not on the phrase “timeline reset.” Preserve or load an existing timeline first, use the named checkpoint after a death, and replay chapters in a separate slot. New Game Plus carry-over and backup availability are title-specific. When a warning says that both timelines will be wiped—or when the only slot has already been overwritten—the active game may not provide a way back.
