Start by determining what happened to the file. A file that was moved, a deleted item still in Trash, an overwritten document with an older version, and a file permanently removed from Yandex servers require different actions. Search the correct Yandex account and activity history first, restore items from Trash while they remain there, and use file history for earlier content. If Trash was emptied or Yandex has no earlier version, its support guidance provides no server-side recovery route.
The sequence below covers the web interface, mobile app, synchronized computers, shared folders, malware-related loss, and how to make a local copy after recovery.
Identify which kind of loss you have
Do not begin with undelete software. Yandex Disk stores the relevant recovery information on its servers, so the useful path depends on whether the file still exists somewhere in your account.

These are separate cases. A local synchronized folder can look empty even when the cloud copy is present, and a file that is still present may have an older recoverable version even though the current contents are wrong.

Check the account, search, and activity before restoring anything
Confirm the Yandex account
Sign in to the Yandex account that owns the file. If you use separate personal, work, or family accounts, compare the account identity shown in the Disk interface with the account used when the file was created. A desktop sync folder does not prove that the currently open browser account is the same one; the application may be connected to another account.
Search beyond the original folder
Use Disk search with the filename, an extension such as .docx or .jpg, and distinctive text from inside the document when supported. Search the entire Disk, not only the folder where you remember saving the item. Check similarly named folders, shared folders, and Trash. A rename or move can make a file appear deleted when it is still intact.
Inspect activity history
Open the account or Disk activity view and look for events around the last time you saw the file. History can show that an item was moved or deleted and may identify the member who made the change. Record the event time and actor before asking a shared-folder owner to investigate. Interface names can change between web and app versions, so look for labels such as Activity, Recent activity, or an equivalent history view.

Restore a deleted file from Yandex Disk Trash
Trash is the first recovery location after an ordinary deletion. Restoration works only while the item remains there.
Web interface
- Open Yandex Disk in the browser and verify the intended account.
- Open the Trash section in the Disk navigation.
- Locate the file or folder. Search or sort if the Trash contains many items.
- Select the item, then choose Restore.
- Return to the original location or use Disk search to confirm that the restored item is present.
Restoring a folder restores the folder structure and the items that are still retained with it. If a file was moved before deletion, use activity history and search to determine where the restored item belongs.

Retention window
Yandex says deleted items are automatically removed from Trash after 30 days, described in some help text as about a month. The period is a service-retention rule, not a promise that every item will remain available for a full 30 calendar days from the moment you notice it. Restore promptly rather than waiting.
Mobile app
The Yandex Disk mobile app also lets you restore an item while it remains in Trash. Open the app’s Trash, select the file or folder, and use the restore command shown in the action menu. The exact icon or menu placement can differ by operating-system version; the essential requirement is that you are signed into the account containing the Trash item.

What happens after Trash is emptied
Manual emptying and automatic removal have the same consequence for the server copy. Yandex’s support documentation states: “Once files are deleted from the Trash (automatically or manually), we can’t recover them: emptying the Trash permanently deletes its contents from Yandex’s servers.” This means a desktop recycle bin, browser cache, or generic undelete utility cannot request the deleted Yandex object back.
Recover an earlier version of an existing file
Use version history when the filename is still present but the contents were replaced, corrupted, or encrypted. This is different from Trash restoration: the current object remains in Disk, and you select an older saved state.
Open History or Changelog
- Find and select the affected file in Yandex Disk.
- Open the file’s menu and choose History, Changelog, or the equivalent version-history command.
- Review the dated versions and identify one from before the unwanted change.
- Choose the action to replace the current version, or save the earlier version as a separate copy.
- Open the result and check the contents before deleting or overwriting anything else.
Saving an earlier version as a copy is safer when you need both the damaged current file and the recovered content. Replacing the current version is appropriate when the old state should become the working document, but keep a local copy first if the file is important.

How long versions are available
For customer accounts, Yandex states that file history covers 14 days when there is no active Yandex 360 plan and 90 days when an active plan is present. Previous versions do not consume Disk space according to Yandex’s customer guidance. The history window starts to matter when a change is discovered: a file can be present today while the needed version has already aged out.
Shared-folder version history
In a shared folder, the owner’s plan determines the history duration described to customers. A member may therefore see a different recovery possibility from what they expect based on their own account. Ask the owner to open the file’s history if your view does not show the earlier version.
Handle shared-folder deletions and permission changes
Shared folders add another layer because editors can delete files and the same deletion is presented differently to different members. Yandex says a deleted shared-folder item moves to the Trash of the member who deleted it and to the folder owner’s Trash, while it is permanently deleted for other members.
Recovery steps for the owner or deleting member
- Identify the member and approximate time from activity history.
- Have the deleting member check their Trash.
- Have the folder owner check the owner’s Trash as well.
- Restore the item from whichever eligible Trash contains it.
- Check the file’s history for an earlier version if the restored item has damaged content.
Other members should not assume that an empty personal Trash proves the file is gone. The owner or deleting member may still have the retained copy. Conversely, if the item was permanently removed from the relevant Trash, the other members cannot create a new server-side recovery path.
When permissions are the real problem
A file can seem missing because your membership or role changed. If search returns no result but the owner can still see the item, ask the owner to confirm that you remain a member and that the folder was not moved to a location you cannot access. Do not recreate a replacement file until the owner has checked activity and Trash; a new file with the same name will not restore the original history.

Respond to malware, ransomware, or mass encryption
If many files changed at once, names acquired unfamiliar extensions, or documents now show unreadable content, treat the computer as potentially compromised. Continuing to synchronize can propagate changes to the cloud and make it harder to distinguish the original from the altered copy.
- Stop synchronization of the affected computer. Pause or quit the Disk desktop application and disconnect the computer from the network if doing so is part of your organization’s incident procedure. Do not keep opening and saving the changed files.
- Scan the computer. Yandex’s troubleshooting guidance recommends scanning with antivirus tools. Use a reputable, updated security product; the scan is for finding malware on the device, not for retrieving data from Yandex servers.
- Secure the account. Change the Yandex ID password from a clean device and review account-security activity, sessions, and recovery methods. Sign out sessions you do not recognize.
- Check Trash for deleted originals. Malware or a cleanup script may have deleted the original files before creating encrypted replacements. Restore retained originals before reconnecting a cleaned device.
- Check version history. For files encrypted in place, open History or Changelog and look for a version from before the incident.
- Preserve evidence and clean devices before resuming sync. If the account belongs to an organization, involve its administrator or incident-response team before deleting logs or resetting machines.
Yandex’s guidance is explicit about the limit: if no old version exists in version history, restoring an encrypted file through that route is impossible. Antivirus software can stop or remove the cause, but it does not reconstruct a version that Yandex no longer retains.
Download a local copy after recovery
Once you have restored a Trash item or selected a usable earlier version, make a local copy before further editing. Download the file from the web interface or use the Yandex Disk desktop application to synchronize it to a known, clean folder. For a large folder that exceeds web-download limits, Yandex documents the desktop application as the practical download route.
Keep the copy independent
- Save the recovered files outside the synchronized folder first, so a later sync event cannot immediately change the only copy.
- Open several representative files and verify that they contain the expected dates, pages, or media.
- Use a second storage location for an additional backup, especially for irreplaceable work.
- After a malware incident, copy data only to a device that has been scanned and secured.
A local copy protects against a future cloud mistake, but it cannot recover an item that was already permanently deleted from Yandex servers. It is a prevention step, not a substitute for Trash or version history.
When Yandex Disk cannot recover the file
There are two decisive failure points. First, a file removed from Trash manually or automatically is permanently deleted from Yandex’s servers under the customer guidance quoted above. Second, an overwritten or encrypted file cannot be restored through history when no older version is available. In either case, changing browsers, reinstalling the Disk application, or buying generic undelete software does not recreate the missing server data.

Check other independent copies only if they already existed: a downloaded archive, an email attachment, a collaborator’s local copy, a device backup, or an organizational backup system. Those are separate sources, not recovery features inside Yandex Disk. Avoid services that promise to bypass an emptied cloud Trash without evidence that they possess a pre-existing copy.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
Restore is unavailable
Confirm that you selected an item in Trash rather than a search result from another location, and verify the account. If the item has passed the retention period or Trash was emptied, the Restore command will not provide a way back.
History shows no useful version
Check the file’s date and the account or owner plan that controls the history window. A shared-folder owner may need to inspect the history. If the desired state predates the available window, Yandex’s documented route is exhausted.
The restored file is not where expected
Search by filename and inspect activity history. A restored item may return to its prior folder, while a moved item may have a different original location. Search the entire Disk instead of relying on the folder tree.
The desktop folder remains empty
Open the web interface and confirm the account, then check the desktop application’s account, sync status, and selected folders. Do not delete the cloud copy to force a resync. Resolve account or synchronization settings first, and make a separate download if the web copy is present.
A shared-folder member cannot see the restored item
Ask the owner to verify membership and permissions. Restoration by the owner or deleting member does not automatically fix a member’s access if that person’s role or invitation has changed.
Prevent the next disappearance
- Keep the Yandex Disk account and desktop-app account aligned; document which account owns important folders.
- Review activity after unexpected moves, deletions, or permission changes.
- Restore urgent deletions immediately instead of waiting near the Trash-retention boundary.
- For important documents, periodically download an offline copy and maintain a second backup.
- Limit editor permissions in shared folders to people who need them, and make the owner responsible for checking history and Trash.
- Use current antivirus protection and investigate mass file changes before allowing synchronization to continue.
- After recovering a critical file, save the recovered version separately before resuming normal edits.
The practical decision is simple: search and activity history address misplaced files, Trash addresses recent deletions, and file history addresses older content of an existing file. Once Yandex has permanently removed the item or has no earlier version, recovery depends on a separate copy that existed elsewhere.
