Wondershare Recoverit can help scan a supported drive for files lost through deletion or formatting, then let you preview and select results to recover. It cannot restore data that has been overwritten, repair a physically damaged drive, or recover from Android or iOS phones and tablets, according to the vendor’s Windows guide. Before scanning, check that your operating system, device, and file system are supported—and stop using the affected drive to reduce the risk of further data being written over recoverable files.
What Recoverit can—and cannot—recover
Recoverit is a self-service option for logical data loss: files that have been deleted, lost, or made inaccessible while the storage device itself remains usable. The vendor describes support for HDDs, SSDs, external drives, USB flash drives, cameras, and memory cards. Its listed file systems include NTFS, FAT, exFAT, APFS, HFS+, ReFS, RAW, and some Linux file systems. Compatibility depends on the product version and platform, so confirm your exact setup in the technical specifications before relying on a scan.
Recoverit’s Windows guide specifically excludes files overwritten by new data, physically damaged storage devices with hardware failures, and Android or iOS phones and tablets. For physical damage, the vendor recommends professional data recovery rather than a software scan. A scan also cannot guarantee that every lost file will appear or that a previewed file will be complete and usable.
What to do before scanning
- Stop writing to the affected storage. Avoid saving, downloading, installing, or copying files onto it. New data can overwrite deleted-file contents, which Recoverit cannot recover once overwritten.
- Identify the source. Note the affected drive, card, or other device, and check its file system and your operating system against the vendor’s current compatibility list.
- Check for physical symptoms. If a drive has hardware failure or physical damage, do not treat repeated scans as a remedy. Follow the vendor’s recommendation to seek a professional recovery service.
- Choose a separate recovery destination. As a practical precaution, save recovered files to another drive, not back to the affected source. This avoids writing recovery output onto the storage you are trying to recover.
How to scan and recover files with Recoverit
The vendor’s basic Windows workflow is to select the location where the loss occurred, scan it, inspect and preview results, select files, and recover them. The exact interface can vary by version.

- Open Recoverit and select the affected location. Choose the specific drive, partition, memory card, or other supported location where the files were lost. If the location is not listed, stop and recheck device and file-system support rather than choosing an unrelated source.
- Start the scan. Let Recoverit search the selected location. A scan can take time, and finding results is not proof that every file is recoverable.
- Inspect and filter the results. Use the available file categories or search and filtering controls to narrow the results to the files you need.
- Preview files where available. Preview can help identify a likely match, but it does not guarantee that the final recovered file will be intact.
- Select files and recover them to a different drive. Choose only the needed results and set a destination separate from the affected source. Check the recovered copies from that destination.
Recoverit’s Windows user guide explains the product’s scan-and-recover process. Its tool options and preview behavior may differ by platform and release.
Can Recoverit recover files after formatting?
It may find files after a format when the device and file system are supported and the data has not been overwritten. Recoverability depends on what happened after the format and how the storage was used; the product’s scan is not a guarantee. Stop using the formatted drive, verify compatibility in the technical specifications, and scan the affected location. If the files matter greatly and the device is failing physically, seek professional help rather than continuing with software attempts.

Can Recoverit fix corrupted files?
Recoverit is described as data-recovery software, not a general-purpose file-repair tool. A scan may locate recoverable versions of files that became inaccessible, but the available sources do not establish that it can repair arbitrary corruption or make a damaged file whole. Previewing a result is useful for identification, not proof of successful repair. If a file is corrupted but the drive is otherwise healthy, preserve the original and treat recovery and repair as separate problems.

What to expect from free and paid editions
The vendor’s free-edition page lists up to 500 MB of recovery for Free and unlimited recovery for Premium. It displayed a Premium price of $64.99 per month on October 7, 2026; price, billing terms, taxes, availability, and renewal conditions can vary by market and change, so check the offer shown to you before purchase.

The same page advertises a 99.5% recovery success rate based on the company’s internal testing. That is a vendor claim, not an independent benchmark or a prediction for a particular drive or file. It should not be read as a guarantee.
When a bootable USB or a professional service makes sense
Use of a bootable USB
Recoverit’s Windows guide includes a bootable recovery toolkit for a crashed computer. A USB flash drive can serve as the bootable media for that scenario, if the relevant toolkit is available for your version. This helps address a computer that cannot start normally; it does not fix a physically damaged storage device or restore overwritten data. Consult the Windows guide for the applicable instructions.

Choosing professional recovery instead
Software is the more appropriate first option when the storage device is physically healthy, the loss is logical, and the device and file system are supported. Consider a professional service when the drive has hardware failure or physical damage, or when the data’s value and urgency make a self-service attempt an unacceptable risk. Recoverit’s own guide identifies physical damage as outside its supported recovery scope; it does not provide a universal software-versus-service outcome rate.
Version and preview differences
Vendor pages do not all describe the same release: the Windows guide identifies V15, another product page identifies V14, and a separate update page describes Recoverit 8.0. Do not assume that a feature or compatibility statement from one page applies to every installation.

The page titled “What’s New in Recoverit 8.0,” published June 3, 2026, says scan modes were combined into a thorough scan, except Recycle Bin/Trash, which retain a two-mode approach. It also says Windows preview is limited to files under 30 MB, while Mac users can preview all data types without a stated file-size limit. These are specifically claims about the 8.0 page; check the documentation for your installed version before relying on them.
