A damaged iMac drive does not automatically mean your files are gone. The safest sequence is to stop unnecessary writes, check for a Time Machine backup, start macOS Recovery, and use Disk Utility First Aid only when the problem appears logical. If the drive is readable but unstable, make a sector-by-sector image to a separate drive before scanning it. A clicking, disappearing, or undetected drive should be powered down and handled by a professional recovery laboratory rather than repeatedly repaired.

Start with a safety check, not a repair

Every additional start-up, scan, repair, or attempted installation can write to a failing disk. Those writes may overwrite directory records or data that could otherwise be recovered. If the iMac is returning input/output errors, the disk vanishes from Disk Utility, repeatedly disconnects, or makes clicking or grinding sounds, shut it down and leave it off until you have chosen a recovery path.

Do these things immediately

  • Stop using the iMac for normal work.
  • Do not install recovery software on the damaged internal disk.
  • Do not erase, reformat, partition, or reinstall macOS while files are still needed.
  • Disconnect nonessential peripherals so they cannot be mistaken for the source or interfere with recovery.
  • Prepare a separate external drive for a backup, disk image, or recovered files.

Work from a copy whenever possible. The original media should remain untouched while you examine an image or clone.

Identify the failure before choosing a method

The same “won’t boot” symptom can come from a damaged filesystem, bad sectors, failed electronics, a failing mechanism, encryption, or a security architecture that requires the original Mac. The table below keeps the response proportional to the risk.

What you observe Most likely category Safest next step
The drive appears in Disk Utility and volumes mount normally Minor logical problem or boot-volume issue Copy important files immediately, then investigate the startup problem.
The drive appears, but a volume will not mount or First Aid reports directory errors Logical filesystem or container damage Check for a backup, then run First Aid in the documented order.
The drive appears intermittently, reports input/output errors, or reads very slowly Bad sectors or an unstable device Stop repeated scans and image the drive to separate storage.
Disk Utility cannot see the physical device Connection, electronics, controller, or mechanical failure Shut down, check only safe external connections, and seek service if detection does not return.
Disk Utility says the disk is about to fail Impending hardware failure Back up what is readable and replace the disk; First Aid cannot repair it.
The data is encrypted or the Mac uses T2 or Apple silicon security Access depends on keys and model-specific security Preserve passwords and recovery keys and consider a specialist before changing the system.

Do not infer that an absent volume means the files are erased. A disk can have a damaged partition or filesystem while the underlying sectors remain readable. Conversely, a disk that briefly mounts can be mechanically failing and may become less readable after every attempt.

Check Time Machine before touching the damaged disk

If Time Machine was enabled, it is usually the lowest-risk recovery route. Apple documents restoring a system or individual files from Recovery, and Time Machine uses an external hard drive. A backup avoids stressing the failing internal media.

Restore to the same iMac

  1. Connect the Time Machine backup drive and shut down the iMac if it is running.
  2. Start macOS Recovery using the startup method for the iMac’s processor and exact model. Intel and Apple silicon Macs do not use the same procedure.
  3. Choose Restore from Time Machine in Recovery.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions and select a backup made before the drive problem began.

Restoring the system can replace the damaged installation, but it does not make a mechanically failing drive reliable. If the internal disk is reporting hardware errors, recover the files to another disk or replace the drive rather than continuing to boot from it.

Move the backup to another Mac

When the goal is to work on a different Mac, use Migration Assistant to transfer data from the Time Machine backup. Keep the original backup connected and unchanged until you have verified that documents, photos, accounts, and other required data open on the destination Mac.

Enter macOS Recovery without making unnecessary changes

Recovery provides Disk Utility, Terminal, macOS reinstall tools, and Time Machine restoration. The startup method depends on whether the iMac is Intel-based or Apple silicon and on the exact model.

Intel iMacs

Intel Macs commonly start Recovery by holding Command-R immediately after pressing the power button. Some models or configurations may require a different startup combination; if that shortcut does not open Recovery, use Apple’s instructions for the exact iMac model rather than repeatedly forcing normal startup.

Apple silicon iMacs

On Apple silicon, press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then choose Options to enter Recovery. The security model can require the Mac’s login password or another authorized credential before an encrypted volume can be unlocked.

Once Recovery loads, avoid reinstalling macOS or erasing a volume until you have completed backup or imaging decisions. Reinstallation can write to the same storage you are trying to preserve.

Use Disk Utility First Aid for logical errors

First Aid checks and repairs formatting and directory-structure problems. It is not a cure for bad heads, failing electronics, damaged cables, or a disk that is about to fail. Apple recommends having a current backup before running it.

Run First Aid in the correct order

  1. Open Disk Utility from the Recovery utilities window.
  2. Choose View > Show All Devices when that option is available. This exposes volumes, containers, and the physical device instead of showing only mounted volumes.
  3. Select the lowest-level volume shown in the hierarchy and click First Aid.
  4. When it finishes, move upward to the next volume or container and run First Aid again.
  5. Continue upward until you have checked the container and finally the physical device.
  6. Record every result, including warnings, input/output errors, and any message that the disk is failing.

Running from the last volume upward lets Disk Utility address dependent structures before checking their containing objects. Do not skip directly to erase or reformat merely because a volume will not mount.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Interpret the result

  • First Aid succeeds: Copy important files to another disk immediately. A successful directory repair does not prove that the hardware is healthy.
  • First Aid reports repaired errors: Treat the disk as suspect, make a complete backup or image, and verify the copied files before normal use.
  • First Aid cannot repair the volume: Do not run it over and over. If the disk is readable, image it first; if it is not detected or is mechanically noisy, stop and seek service.
  • Disk Utility says the disk is about to fail: Apple says the disk cannot be repaired. Back up whatever remains readable and replace it.

If First Aid fails while data is still needed, do not erase or reinstall. Those operations can destroy remaining filesystem information and make later recovery harder.

Image a readable but failing disk before file recovery

When the drive is detected and produces data intermittently, the safest technical approach is to copy sectors to a separate destination and recover files from that copy. GNU ddrescue is designed to copy readable areas first, record progress in a mapfile, and return later to difficult areas. This reduces repeated head movement and allows an interrupted operation to resume.

Prepare the destination

  • Use a separate external drive with at least as much free capacity as the source device or the image format you intend to create.
  • Use a reliable cable and, where the enclosure requires it, a powered enclosure.
  • Confirm the source and destination by model, capacity, and serial identifier. A destination device can be overwritten.
  • Keep the ddrescue mapfile on reliable storage. Without it, an interrupted copy may have to start again.
  • Do not use the destination as the source. Verify the device identities a second time immediately before starting.

An external hard drive is suitable for Time Machine, an image, or recovered files. An external SSD can be preferable when speed and shock resistance matter. Neither device repairs the internal iMac drive.

Use ddrescue conservatively

GNU ddrescue version 1.30 is identified by the GNU Project in 2026. Its command format is an input device or file, an output image or device, and a mapfile. A typical workflow is:

sudo ddrescue -f -n /dev/rdiskX /Volumes/Recovery/source.img /Volumes/Recovery/source.map
sudo ddrescue -d -r3 /dev/rdiskX /Volumes/Recovery/source.img /Volumes/Recovery/source.map

Replace /dev/rdiskX and the destination paths only after confirming them on the Mac you are using. The first pass copies easy-to-read areas without spending time scraping bad sectors; a later pass can retry difficult areas while using the same mapfile. The exact device name and whether an image file or a whole destination disk is appropriate depend on the setup.

  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

The GNU manual gives two critical warnings: “Never try to rescue a r/w mounted partition” and “Never try to repair a file system on a drive with I/O errors; you will probably lose even more data.” Unmount the source before imaging, do not repair the filesystem while ddrescue is working, and never mount the failing source read/write.

Work only from the image

After imaging, disconnect or preserve the original and perform filesystem checks, file carving, and recovery scans against the image or clone. Save recovered files to a third disk, not back to the image. If the image cannot be completed because the drive repeatedly disconnects, clicks, overheats, or stops responding, further home attempts can reduce the chance of laboratory recovery.

Know when professional recovery is the safer option

Stop DIY work and contact a professional laboratory when the device is absent from Disk Utility, repeatedly disappears, makes mechanical noises, has suffered liquid or impact damage, or contains irreplaceable data. A lab can work on failed electronics or mechanics with equipment that is not available in macOS Recovery.

Escalate immediately for these symptoms

  • Clicking, grinding, chirping, or repeated spin-up and spin-down sounds.
  • The physical disk is not detected after a safe shutdown and connection check.
  • Disk Utility reports imminent failure.
  • The drive disconnects during imaging or becomes progressively slower.
  • The storage is encrypted and the required password or recovery key is uncertain.
  • The iMac uses T2 or Apple silicon security and the original Mac is unavailable or damaged.
  • The data has high personal, legal, or business value and no verified backup exists.

Apple’s guidance for an undetected device is to shut down, remove nonessential devices, check cables and power for external equipment, and seek service when detection does not return. Do not open an internal drive, swap its heads, or repeatedly cycle power in an attempt to make it appear.

Running First Aid repeatedly

First Aid is for logical structure errors. Repeating it on a disk with hardware or input/output errors adds activity without fixing the cause. One documented pass is reasonable when the device is stable and backed up; repeated failure is a signal to image or escalate.

Confusing a disk image destination with a source

ddrescue warns that the destination may be overwritten. Confirm identifiers and capacity before every run. If the destination contains valuable files, move them elsewhere first.

Erasing because macOS cannot boot

A nonbooting iMac can still have recoverable files. Erase and reinstall only after files are backed up, imaged, or deliberately abandoned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming encryption means automatic loss

Encryption does not by itself prove that data is gone, but recovery depends on the correct password, recovery key, and the original security architecture. Preserve those credentials and avoid changing accounts or resetting the Mac before the data is secured.

Verify the recovery and prevent a second loss

  1. Open representative documents, photos, libraries, and project files from the recovered destination.
  2. Check file counts and folder structure against what you remember, not just whether a copy operation completed.
  3. Keep the original drive, image, mapfile, and Time Machine backup untouched until verification is complete.
  4. Set up a new Time Machine backup on a separate external drive after the Mac is stable.
  5. Keep at least one additional copy of irreplaceable files, preferably on media that is not permanently connected to the iMac.
  6. Replace a drive that has reported imminent failure rather than returning it to daily use.

There is no reliable general recovery percentage or average price for a damaged iMac drive. Results depend on whether the fault is logical, electronic, mechanical, or related to encryption; on how much data can still be read; and on the iMac’s storage design. Treat the data’s value and the drive’s behavior as the deciding factors, not the fact that the Mac once booted normally.
