KeePassXC cannot reset or bypass a forgotten master password. A locked .kdbx file can be opened only with the original master password and any other unlock factors that were configured for that particular database. If none of those credentials can be recovered, access may be permanently lost.

Work through the checks below in order: confirm that you are opening the right database, retry the password carefully, locate the exact key file or hardware factor if one was configured, check encrypted backups and storage-service version history, and look for an older printed or exported copy made while the database was still open.

How do I recover my KeePassXC password?

You do not recover the password from KeePassXC itself. The application stores your entries in an encrypted database and does not have a recovery account, administrator override, or master-password reset screen. Reinstalling KeePassXC, moving the file to another computer, or installing a newer release does not change that encryption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KeePassXC states the consequence plainly in its Getting Started Guide: “Losing the database password might result in permanent locking of your database and you will not be able to retrieve information stored in the database.” Treat that as a real possibility, not as a warning that a support request or a new device can overcome.

Your realistic options are therefore limited to finding the original credentials or finding a readable copy that was created before access was lost. A second encrypted database file is useful for recovering from deletion or corruption, but it still requires the credentials used to encrypt it.

Identify the complete unlock setup before trying anything risky

The master password may not have been the only part of the database’s key. KeePassXC can combine it with an optional key file and, in supported configurations, a hardware challenge-response factor. All required parts must match the database being opened.

Unlock or recovery item When it can help Important limitation
Original master password Always required unless you have a previously readable export KeePassXC provides no reset for a locked database.
Exact configured key file Required when that database was created with a key file The original file must be preserved; a replacement or edited file does not substitute for it.
Exact configured hardware factor Required when a token such as a configured YubiKey or OnlyKey challenge-response setup was used A newly purchased token is not automatically associated with an existing database.
Older encrypted .kdbx copy Useful when the current file was deleted, overwritten, or corrupted The copy remains encrypted and still needs its valid unlock credentials.
Earlier HTML, paper, or other export Can provide the entries directly if created while the database was accessible Exports are readable sensitive data, not encrypted database backups.

The KeePassXC documentation and FAQ describe key files and hardware factors as additions to the master key. Before searching randomly, recall whether this specific database used either option. A key file found somewhere on the computer is not necessarily the one that belongs to the database.

Follow this recovery checklist

1. Confirm that you are opening the correct database file

  1. In your file manager, check the complete name and location of the file you open in KeePassXC. Confirm that it is the expected .kdbx database, rather than an older test database, a temporary download, or a similarly named file.
  2. Look for other copies in the folders you normally use for documents, encrypted storage, removable drives, and synchronized folders. Record each file’s modification date and size before opening or replacing anything.
  3. Do not delete the current file while testing. Make a duplicate of a candidate copy and work on the duplicate so that a damaged or newer file is not accidentally overwritten.

Opening the wrong database can look exactly like a forgotten password: a familiar entry is missing, or a password that worked previously is rejected because it belongs to another file.

2. Retry the original password as a human-error check

Use the password you originally set, not a newly invented variation. KeePassXC does not document these checks as a recovery feature, but they are sensible ways to catch a typing mismatch:

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • Verify the keyboard layout and language currently active.
  • Check Caps Lock, Num Lock, and the state of modifier keys.
  • Type the password into a private, offline text field first if you need to inspect unusual characters, then clear that field immediately. Do not paste the password into a website.
  • Consider whether the recorded version used different capitalization, punctuation, a different keyboard symbol, or an intentional leading or trailing space.
  • Try the password on the correct database copy, and avoid repeated guesses based on increasingly elaborate assumptions.

If you kept a written or password-manager record of the master password, compare it character by character with what you enter. A password that is almost right is still wrong cryptographically.

3. Determine whether a key file was required

A key file is an additional credential, not a backup password. Search only locations you control and would reasonably have used: a dedicated credentials folder, an encrypted external drive, a documented backup folder, or the backup location you chose when creating the database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep each candidate file unchanged. Do not open it in an editor, rename it to alter its contents, or convert it to another format.
  • Compare candidates with any notes or backup records you made when the database was configured. The name alone does not prove that a file is the right key.
  • Check whether a backup of the key file exists alongside your database backups. The KeePassXC FAQ warns that changing the key file can make the database fail to open and recommends retaining a backup.

If the database required a key file and the original file is missing or altered, knowing the master password alone will not complete the unlock.

4. Recall any configured hardware factor

KeePassXC documentation describes optional hardware-token challenge-response support. If you configured a YubiKey or OnlyKey for this database, use the same physical device and the same slot or challenge-response configuration that was originally enrolled.

Buying a token now cannot recreate a factor that was never configured, and it cannot replace a different token that was configured previously. Keep the search focused on the device you actually used, including any secure storage location where you kept it when not in use.

  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

5. Check local backups and storage-service version history

Search the backup locations used by your operating system, backup software, and synchronization service. If the database was stored in cloud storage, inspect its version history or deleted-file area for an earlier intact copy. KeePassXC’s Getting Started Guide recommends storage with automatic backups or version history because it can help after accidental deletion or corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a historical file to a new folder and give it a distinct name. Never replace the only current copy during an experiment. Then test the restored copy with the original password and, if applicable, the matching key file and hardware factor.

Version history solves a file-integrity problem, not a credential problem. A restored .kdbx file is still encrypted, so it does not provide a way around a forgotten password.

6. Look for a pre-existing readable export

Search paper records, offline archives, and carefully stored files for an HTML export or another export you made while the database was unlocked. KeePassXC supports an HTML export that can be printed as a human-readable paper backup; the workflow is described in the KeePassXC paper-backup article.

Do not expect to create a new export from a locked database. If you find an old export, treat it as plaintext containing passwords, usernames, notes, and possibly URLs. Limit access to it, avoid uploading it to an online converter or recovery service, and securely delete temporary copies after you have transferred the information to a protected password database.

Choose the right path for what you found

Use this decision table to avoid confusing a database copy with an unlock credential:

What you found Next action What it cannot do
The original password, possibly recorded with a typo Retry it on the confirmed database file after checking keyboard and capitalization details. It cannot help if it belongs to a different database or was changed after the copy was made.
A candidate key file Use it unchanged with the password on a duplicate database copy. It cannot be replaced by a newly generated file.
The original hardware token Connect the same device and select the configured challenge-response setup. A new token does not inherit the old database’s configuration.
An older encrypted database Test it separately with the credentials that were valid when that copy was created. It does not decrypt itself or reset the password.
A printed or exported copy Use it as a readable source for rebuilding access in a new protected database. It is not an encrypted backup and may expose every stored secret.

What to do when the database was deleted or corrupted

If KeePassXC reports a file problem, or the expected file has disappeared, prioritize file recovery before changing credentials. Check the operating system’s recycle or trash area, your backup folders, removable media, and the version history of the service that synchronized the file.

Keep the recovered file separate from the live path until you have verified it. A file from before the last edits may contain older entries, while a newer file may contain the latest changes but be damaged. Preserve both when possible and label their dates clearly.

Once you regain access, KeePassXC’s User Guide documents a Save Database Backup… command and a configurable backup made before saving. These features create additional encrypted database copies; they are safeguards against file loss, not methods for changing the master password without knowing it.

How to handle an HTML or paper backup safely

An HTML export is useful precisely because it is readable without opening KeePassXC, but that convenience makes it a high-risk secret. Anyone who obtains the file can read the stored credentials without the database password.

If you use a paper backup, keep the pages in a protected place and account for every printed page. If you use an electronic HTML file, store it only on a device or medium you control while you rebuild the database. The paper-backup guidance recommends deleting the intermediate HTML file after printing; follow the same principle for temporary copies and printer spools where practical.

After transferring entries, remove obsolete plaintext exports from ordinary folders, shared drives, email attachments, and recycle bins according to your organization’s secure-deletion policy. Do not mistake a readable export for proof that the encrypted database can be unlocked; it is a separate copy of the information.

Approaches that will not restore a forgotten password

  • Reinstalling or downgrading KeePassXC: application files do not contain the missing database key, so changing the installed version does not decrypt the file.
  • Asking KeePassXC support for an override: the encryption design does not provide a support-side master key for your personal database.
  • Generating a new key file: a new file is a different credential and cannot stand in for the key file originally combined with the database.
  • Buying a new hardware token: a token helps only when that exact device and configuration were already part of the database’s unlock setup.
  • Editing, renaming, or converting the key file: any change can make an otherwise correct file unusable. Preserve the original bytes and test copies instead.
  • Uploading the database to an untrusted recovery service: you would be disclosing an encrypted container and possibly associated files without gaining a guaranteed recovery path.
  • Assuming a password-cracking tool will succeed: no documented KeePassXC feature guarantees that approach, and the result depends entirely on the strength and details of the unknown credentials. Do not treat it as a promised recovery method.

What to do immediately after you regain access

Use the successful unlock as an opportunity to make the next incident survivable without weakening the database. Work from a copy when experimenting, and keep the active database intact until each backup has been checked.

  1. Create independent encrypted database copies. Use KeePassXC’s backup command and retain copies on more than one storage medium. Keep at least one copy independent of the device that normally holds the database.
  2. Back up every credential component. Store the master-password record, the exact key file if used, and the configured hardware factor together in a way that is secure but available to your future self. A database backup without its required key file or token may be unusable.
  3. Enable version history where the database is stored. Automatic historical versions can help if a file is overwritten or corrupted. They do not decrypt the file, so preserve the unlock information separately.
  4. Document the unlock recipe. Record which database uses which key file and whether a hardware challenge-response factor is required. Avoid putting the actual master password in an ordinary unprotected note.
  5. Test restoration periodically. On a schedule that fits how often you change the database, restore a copy to a temporary location and verify that the recorded password and other factors open it. Testing catches missing key files, expired storage access, and unusable backup media before an emergency.
  6. Keep readable emergency copies under deliberate control. If you maintain a paper or HTML export, date it, restrict who can access it, and replace or destroy outdated copies when you create a newer one.

Changing a master password is an operation performed from an unlocked database; it is not a recovery mechanism for a database you cannot open. If you decide to change it after recovery, update your protected records and backup plan at the same time.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Most useful check Safe response
The password is rejected immediately Confirm the database path, keyboard layout, capitalization, whitespace, and whether a key file or token was configured. Stop altering files; test the original credentials against a duplicate of the confirmed database.
The password worked previously but fails after a file move Check whether the move also changed or omitted the key file or hardware factor. Use the original factor and restore the key file from a known-good backup if available.
The database file will not open or appears damaged Compare it with older local copies and storage-service versions. Restore a historical copy to a separate folder and keep the damaged original for evidence.
You found an HTML or paper export Check its creation date and whether it contains the entries you need. Protect it as plaintext and use it to rebuild access; do not upload it to a third party.
No credential, factor, or readable export can be found Review personal records and every expected backup location once more. Set expectations that the encrypted contents may be permanently inaccessible.

Check the documentation and release information

For the current terminology and supported unlock options, use the official documentation and FAQ, the Getting Started Guide, and the User Guide. The download page listed KeePassXC 2.7.12 when checked on October 11, 2026; release listings can change, so verify the official download page before describing a version as current. A version update may improve compatibility or fix bugs, but it does not remove the need for the original database credentials.
