You can’t use a Microsoft-documented Command Prompt procedure to reset a forgotten Windows 10 password. Command Prompt is available in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for advanced troubleshooting, but Microsoft’s account-recovery instructions direct you to different methods. The right method depends on whether you sign in with a local account or a Microsoft account.
First, identify which password you need to recover
A local account is specific to one PC. A Microsoft account uses an email address and password across Microsoft services. Check the account shown on the sign-in screen: the distinction determines which recovery flow applies. Microsoft explains the differences and recovery options for Windows accounts.
Reset a local account from the sign-in screen
If you set up security questions for the local account, use them to reset its password:

- Select OK.
- Select Reset password.
- Answer the security questions you created for the account, then follow the prompts to set a new password.
If the sign-in screen offers the option to use a password reset disk you created earlier, you can use that instead. These steps reset a local account; they are not the method for changing a Microsoft account password. See Microsoft’s local-account password reset instructions.

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
- After that its will take few minutes to reset Windows login password
- Package includes instruction how to use "Password reset USB" software
Use a password reset disk only if you made one beforehand
A Windows local-account password reset disk is a USB flash drive prepared while you are signed in to that local account. It can help you reset the password later, but it cannot recover a password if you did not create the disk in advance. Microsoft says this option is for local accounts, not Microsoft accounts. Microsoft’s instructions explain how to create a local-account reset disk.
Ask another administrator account on the PC to reset it
If you can sign in to a different administrator account on the same PC, Microsoft documents changing the locked-out local account’s password through Computer Management:

- Right-click the account that needs a new password and select Set Password.

The administrator account must already exist and be accessible. If there is no other administrator account available, Microsoft’s local-account guidance points to resetting the Windows device instead. Check Microsoft’s guidance for local accounts.
Recover a Microsoft account password online
For a Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s online password-recovery flow rather than the local-account reset options. You will need to verify your identity using a method Microsoft offers for the account, such as a code sent to a recovery email address or phone number. If you cannot use the offered verification methods, follow the recovery options shown in Microsoft’s process. Start with Microsoft’s forgotten-password guidance.

Why Command Prompt in WinRE is not a password-reset method
WinRE includes Command Prompt as an advanced troubleshooting option. That availability does not mean Microsoft supports using Command Prompt to bypass the sign-in screen or reset a forgotten account password. Microsoft’s password-recovery guidance instead lists the account-specific methods above and, in some cases, a device reset. Read Microsoft’s overview of Windows Recovery Environment.
Avoid instructions that replace accessibility or system files, or edit the offline account database to get around sign-in. Those procedures are not the documented recovery route and can compromise access controls or damage Windows. Command Prompt may still be useful for legitimate repairs, but it is not a supported substitute for account recovery.

- ✅ Compatible with most PCs, laptops, and desktops

Reset the PC only as a fallback
If you are locked out of a local account and cannot use security questions, a previously created reset disk, or another administrator account, resetting the device may be necessary. Windows 10’s Reset this PC recovery option can offer choices to keep personal files or remove everything. Recovery choices can cause data loss, and keeping personal files does not mean every app or setting will remain. Back up files if you can before proceeding. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and their effects.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Microsoft’s WinRE page includes this lifecycle notice.
