A delayed cross-chain swap is recoverable only after you identify where it stopped. Do not send a second swap or sign a “recovery” transaction yet. Record the origin transaction hash, verify that transaction on the source chain, read the exact bridge or swap provider’s status, and inspect your wallet on the destination network. The provider’s documented state—pending, filled, expired, refunded, retrying, or terminal—determines whether you wait, look for an intermediate token, or contact support.
What “stuck” means in a cross-chain swap
A cross-chain swap is usually a sequence rather than one transaction. Your wallet may submit an origin-chain transaction, a bridge may escrow or relay the funds, and a destination-chain swap or contract call may finish the route. A delay at any stage can look identical in a wallet activity list.
- The origin transaction never initiated: the wallet rejected it, it was dropped before broadcast, or it failed before funds left your control.
- The origin transaction confirmed but the provider has not processed it: the bridge or route is still indexing, waiting for confirmations, or queued for settlement.
- The bridge leg completed but a later step failed: the destination wallet can contain an intermediate asset instead of the quoted output.
- The route expired or entered refund processing: the provider may return an asset to a configured refund address, but settlement can take hours.
- The provider reports a terminal failure: only that provider can explain or complete the recovery; a new user-submitted transaction can create a duplicate or a second loss.
A label such as pending in one app is not proof that funds are lost, refunded, or even on-chain. Status names are provider-specific, so use the tracker for the exact app and bridge that handled the route.
Collect the transaction details before taking action
Write down the information support and explorers will need. Save it in a note before changing networks or closing the app.

- The wallet or swap application used.
- The source (origin) network and destination network.
- The input token, intended output token, amount, and approximate submission time.
- The destination address shown in the route.
- The origin transaction hash, if the wallet supplied one.
- The bridge or route provider named in the quote, progress screen, or transaction details.
- Any deposit ID, request ID, plan ID, quote ID, error text, or provider status.
Do not infer a destination transfer from a wallet balance that is displaying the wrong network. Connect to, or switch the wallet view to, the destination chain and then inspect that chain’s native explorer and token balances.
Step 1: Verify whether the origin transaction actually started
Search the origin hash on the native explorer
Open the block explorer for the source chain and search the exact origin transaction hash. Confirm that the sender, destination contract, token, and amount match your route. The explorer status should tell you whether the transaction is confirmed, still pending, failed, or absent.
An absent hash usually means the wallet never broadcast the transaction or discarded it before submission. A pending hash means the chain has seen it but has not finalized it. A failed hash means the chain rejected execution; the failure reason and gas outcome are chain-specific. Do not replace a pending transaction or resubmit the bridge until you know which of these states applies.
If the transaction never initiated
Synapse’s transaction support guidance says a transaction that does not initiate on the origin chain returns an error and leaves the assets under the user’s control. It recommends checking the wallet’s available funds and gas before trying again. That guidance applies to the origin-initiation case, not to an already confirmed bridge deposit.
Synapse also notes that some origin-chain initiation problems take about 30–60 minutes to resolve in its documented scenarios. This is a provider-specific estimate, not a universal waiting period for cross-chain transfers.

If the transaction did initiate
Once the origin transaction is confirmed, do not submit a duplicate route merely because the destination token is not visible. Move to the exact provider’s tracker. A second submission can create two legitimate deposits, two fees, or two separate recovery cases.
Step 2: Read the exact provider’s status
Use the official progress page, tracker, or support documentation for the provider named by your route. Do not translate one provider’s state machine into another provider’s labels.

Across says its tracker data updates about every 10 seconds, but its documentation recommends polling refunds less frequently because a refund takes hours rather than seconds. A changing tracker timestamp is not the same as a completed refund.
For 0x, the recovery labels belong to its Cross-Chain API. The documented flow says the recovery path depends on where the transfer fails. Treat these labels as API-specific and do not assume another bridge uses them.
Step 3: Check the destination chain for the output or an intermediate asset
Switch to the correct network
In the wallet, select the destination network and verify the destination address. Check the token balance and destination transaction history on that network’s explorer. A token may be present but hidden because the wallet has not added its contract to the asset list; verify the contract address from the provider’s official route details before displaying a token.

Look for a completed bridge leg
A chained route can complete the bridge step and fail during a later swap or contract call. Uniswap’s developer guidance recommends inspecting the last step marked COMPLETE, then recording that step’s output token and chain. That is the asset and network the user may currently hold, even when the final quote was different.

0x documents that recovery is based on the bridge step’s sell or buy token, not necessarily the original quote input. For example, a route that starts with ETH but wraps to WETH before bridging can refund WETH; a route that swaps to USDC before the bridge can refund USDC. Check the provider’s recovery fields and configured refund address instead of assuming the original token will return.
Synapse warns that a sudden increase in slippage can result in delivery of an intermediate asset on the destination chain. If that occurs, you can decide whether to swap that delivered asset on the destination chain after confirming its contract and value. Do not send it back to an address from an unsolicited message.
Step 4: Follow the recovery path for the state you find
Case A: No confirmed origin transaction
Keep the assets in the wallet, confirm that the balance and gas are sufficient, and resolve the wallet or chain error. Retry only after the original attempt is clearly absent or failed, not while it remains pending. Use the same route details and verify the destination address before signing.
Case B: Origin confirmed, provider still pending
Leave the confirmed transaction alone and monitor the provider’s tracker. The provider may still be waiting for confirmations, indexing the origin event, or processing a destination call. Check the destination wallet periodically, but do not repeatedly resubmit the route.

Synapse says its progress-menu explorer links can reveal an origin-chain confirmation that Synapse has not yet received. A destination transaction may also appear in Synapse Explorer only after indexing, so an empty provider page is not by itself proof that the transaction failed.
Case C: Across reports expired
An expired Across deposit is not an instant refund. Across explains that the deposit remains escrowed while it is included in a settlement bundle, passes challenge processing, and waits for canonical bridge delays. Its documentation estimates several hours for the refund process.
Across reports proposed settlement bundles about 1.5 hours apart. That interval and the several-hour refund estimate are documentation figures, not guarantees. Wait for the tracker to change to refunded and then verify the configured refund address on-chain.
Case D: 0x reports a recovery state
refund_pending: continue polling the 0x recovery status; do not create a second route.refund_succeeded: find the recovery transaction and confirm the returned token and recipient on-chain. A recovery hash alone is not proof that the balance is usable.manual_action_required: read the provider response carefully. In the documented automatic-retry paths, 0x may be retrying a destination call without requiring a user signature; other integrations can require a different support instruction.no_actions_required: follow the response details and verify the destination or refund result on-chain rather than relying on the label alone.failed: treat the status as terminal for that endpoint and contact 0x support with the responsezidand the original transaction details.
Case E: Synapse says the transfer did not complete
Synapse’s documentation says transactions that fail to complete are not lost and are manually addressed by its support team. Use Synapse’s official support route and provide the origin hash, source and destination chains, token, amount, time, and the status shown in the progress screen. Do not attempt an unsolicited contract call or sign a message supplied by someone claiming to be support.

Record the token contract, chain, amount, and the last completed step. If the asset is the expected result of the bridge leg, you can evaluate a destination-chain swap using a trusted interface after checking liquidity, price impact, and network fees. If the token or contract is not clearly identified by the provider, pause and ask official support before moving it.

How long should you wait?
There is no universal cross-chain timeout. The route, bridge, source-chain finality, settlement design, and failure stage all change the clock.

If the provider’s documented expectation has passed, or the tracker shows a terminal error, escalate through the provider’s official support channel. Do not infer failure solely from elapsed time.
Use a recovery decision matrix

This matrix is a triage aid, not a promise that every provider exposes these exact states. The authoritative instruction is always the status and documentation for the provider that handled your transfer.
What to send support
A complete first message reduces back-and-forth. Include:
- Origin transaction hash and, if available, destination or recovery hash.
- Source and destination chain IDs or network names.
- Input token, intended output token, amount, and the token currently visible, if different.
- Wallet address and configured refund address, with private keys and recovery phrases omitted.
- Submission time in UTC and the current provider status exactly as displayed.
- Deposit ID, request ID, plan ID, response
zid, or other provider identifier. - Screenshots of the progress state with personal secrets, seed phrases, QR codes, and signing prompts removed.
Uniswap’s developer integration guidance asks developers reporting an issue to include request and plan IDs, relevant payloads, chain IDs, a transaction hash, and the request timestamp. That is an integration-support example, not a universal consumer requirement; provide equivalent identifiers when your provider offers them.
Actions that can make recovery worse
- Do not submit a duplicate swap after the origin transaction confirms. Check the provider tracker and destination chain first.
- Do not sign an unsolicited “recovery” transaction. Use only the wallet prompt generated by the provider’s official interface and verify the contract and network.
- Never share a recovery phrase or private key. Legitimate support does not need wallet control to read a transaction status.
- Do not assume a recovery hash proves completion. Confirm the final provider status, recipient, token, amount, and chain on an explorer.
- Do not assume the refund is the original token. Wrapped or intermediate assets can be the documented recovery result.
- Do not use one bridge’s labels as another bridge’s instructions.
expired,filled,manual_action_required, and similar terms have provider-specific meanings.
When the funds are safe to use again
Consider the incident resolved only when the provider’s final state agrees with an on-chain result: the intended output is in the destination wallet, or the documented refund token is in the configured refund address. Confirm the chain, token contract, recipient, and amount. A wallet display, a progress spinner, or a transaction hash without a matching final state is not enough.
If the provider cannot match the origin hash, the status remains incomplete beyond its own documented expectation, or it requests manual escalation, stop submitting transactions and use its official support path with the full evidence package.
