Remove or disable the suspicious extension first, then restore the homepage, startup pages, new-tab behavior and search engine it changed. If the setting returns after you restart the browser, treat the problem as possible unwanted software on the computer: scan the system, remove unfamiliar programs, review browser policies, and only then use the browser’s reset or refresh feature.

The exact menus and reset effects differ between Chrome, Firefox and Edge. A browser reset repairs profile settings, but it is not proof that malware has been removed from the device.

What a malicious extension change looks like

An unwanted extension may alter settings without an obvious warning. Common signs include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your homepage or startup page changes to an unfamiliar site.
  • The default search engine changes, or searches are redirected through an unexpected service.
  • A new-tab page, pinned tab or toolbar appears without your approval.
  • Pop-ups, repeated windows or unfamiliar advertising begin after an extension is installed.
  • An extension returns after you remove it, or its settings come back after the browser restarts.
  • The browser reports that an extension is managed by an organization even though you use a personal computer.

These symptoms can indicate unwanted software, but changed browser settings alone do not establish that saved passwords or online accounts were accessed. If you entered credentials into a suspicious page, handle account security separately by changing those passwords from a known-clean device and reviewing account activity.

The safest recovery order

Work in this order so that you do not reset a profile while the software that is changing it remains active:

  1. Record what changed. Note the suspicious extension’s name, publisher, installation date if shown, altered homepage or search engine, and any message about organization management. Screenshots can help if you need administrator or technical support.
  2. Disable or remove the extension. Use the browser’s built-in extensions or add-ons manager. If removal is unavailable, disable it first.
  3. Repair visible settings. Check the homepage, startup pages, new-tab setting, pinned tabs and default search engine.
  4. Check the computer. Remove unfamiliar applications and run a full scan with reputable security software if the browser changes again or other symptoms remain.
  5. Reset only after reviewing the consequences. Chrome Reset and Firefox Refresh remove different kinds of customizations and retain different profile data.
  6. Verify after restarting. Recheck the extension list, search provider, homepage and policy status. A returning change means the cause is not confined to the browser profile.

Step 1: remove or disable the unwanted extension

Firefox

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose Extensions and themes, then select Extensions.
  3. Select the unwanted add-on and choose Remove.
  4. Restart Firefox and confirm that the add-on is no longer listed.

If Remove is not available, disable the add-on as a temporary workaround. An extension installed by another program or enforced by policy may require you to remove that software or address the policy before Firefox will allow normal removal.

Edge

Open Edge’s extensions manager, select the suspicious extension, and use Microsoft’s controls to turn it off or remove it. Some extensions can change the default search engine, so removing the extension is only the first part of the repair. Restart Edge before checking whether the change returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome and other Chromium browsers

Open the browser’s built-in extensions manager, turn off the unfamiliar extension, then remove it. Do not install a second “cleaner” extension to remove the first one: a browser extension with broad permissions can make the situation worse. If the manager immediately reinstalls the extension, continue with the computer and policy checks below instead of repeatedly clicking Remove.

Step 2: restore every setting the extension changed

Removing an extension does not necessarily undo the values it wrote into your profile. Review each of these areas:

  • Homepage: remove an unfamiliar address and set the page you actually want.
  • Startup or launch pages: check every page that opens when the browser starts; delete entries you did not add.
  • New-tab page: restore the browser’s normal new-tab behavior if an extension replaced it.
  • Default search engine: select a provider you recognize and remove unfamiliar providers where the browser permits it.
  • Pinned tabs: unpin tabs that reappear at every launch.
  • Toolbar and appearance: remove unfamiliar buttons, themes or toolbars after the extension is gone.
  • Site permissions: review notification, pop-up, redirect and other permissions granted to suspicious sites.

Close and reopen the browser after saving these changes. If the old homepage, search engine or startup page returns, do not assume that the reset failed; the returning value is evidence that another program or policy is enforcing it.

Step 3: check the computer outside the browser

Google’s Chrome guidance says to check the computer for unwanted programs before resetting the browser. Mozilla likewise treats recurring Firefox changes, unwanted toolbars and repeated windows as possible signs of software on the computer rather than a problem limited to one profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove unfamiliar applications

Review recently installed applications in your operating system’s normal app-removal screen. Look for programs installed at the same time as the extension, software with a publisher you do not recognize, and utilities that claim to manage search, browsing or security settings. Remove only software you can identify confidently; if a work or school administrator owns the device, ask before uninstalling management or security components.

When reinstalling a browser or security utility, use the developer’s official download source. Avoid download pages that bundle “browser helpers,” search tools or optional extensions.

Run a security scan

Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus product when an extension returns, settings change again, or the computer shows other suspicious behavior. A quick browser reset cannot remove a program, scheduled task or policy that reinstalls the extension. Keep the security software’s definitions current and follow its quarantine or removal instructions.

Separate browser repair from account protection

Changed settings do not by themselves prove that credentials were stolen. However, if the extension had access to pages where you entered passwords, payment details or recovery codes, change those credentials from a known-clean device, enable multifactor authentication where available, and inspect recent sign-ins. Do not enter a password into a page reached through an unexpected redirect while investigating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: use a browser reset only after reviewing its effects

Reset and refresh tools are broader than removing one extension. They can remove customizations you wanted to keep, and they do not guarantee complete device cleanup. Choose the action that matches the browser and the amount of profile repair required.

Google notes that some settings, including fonts and accessibility, are not deleted. Saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. Google says to check the computer for unwanted programs before using Reset.
Firefox Help → More troubleshooting information → Refresh Firefox, then confirm Creates a new profile and removes extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, some storage and security-device settings, download actions, toolbar customizations and user styles. Retains bookmarks, browsing and download history, passwords, cookies, web-form autofill information and the personal dictionary. Availability can depend on profile-management configuration; Mozilla says the feature may be unavailable under the new profile-management system unless Firefox is updated to version 150 or later.
Edge Use Edge’s extension controls to turn off or remove the extension, then inspect search and other settings. The available Microsoft guidance supports extension removal and policy troubleshooting. The material here does not establish a current, official Edge reset sequence. Do not apply Chrome or Firefox reset instructions to Edge by assumption.

Chrome: what to expect

Chrome Reset is a profile-settings repair, not a factory reset of the computer. It does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords, but it changes the settings listed above. Cookies and site data may be reset, so sites can sign you out or lose stored preferences. After the reset, review the extension list and sign in only after you are satisfied that the computer itself is clean.

Firefox: what to expect

Firefox Refresh creates a new profile while carrying forward the specific personal data Mozilla lists. It removes extensions, themes, modified preferences, added search engines, site permissions and several interface and download customizations. Export or record important settings before refreshing if you need to recreate them. If Refresh is unavailable, update Firefox where appropriate and check whether profile-management configuration is blocking the feature.

Edge: stay with supported controls

For Edge, remove or disable the extension through the extension manager and repair the homepage and search settings manually. If the browser still reports organization management or the extension returns, follow the policy and security steps rather than inventing a reset path from another browser.

When the browser says it is managed

“Managed by your organization” does not automatically mean malware. Firefox says policies can come from an employer or school administrator, security software, or local settings. On a managed device, ask the administrator before changing policy-controlled settings; removing an extension may conflict with the organization’s security requirements.

On a personal device, investigate why the message appears. Microsoft notes that an Edge extension claiming organization management on a device that is not organization-managed can sometimes be malware. Run a full scan and review legitimate security or parental-control software before making system changes.

Do not treat registry editing as routine first-line recovery. Microsoft warns that registry changes are risky. If a policy remains on a personal computer after you have removed suspicious software and scanned the device, use Microsoft’s official troubleshooting guidance or obtain qualified technical support.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The extension cannot be removed

Disable it, restart the browser, and check whether a recently installed application or policy installed it. On Firefox, Mozilla says software-installed extensions may require removing the parent software or using its advanced removal guidance. On Edge, investigate the organization-management message and scan the computer. Avoid downloading an unverified removal utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The homepage changes back after restart

Check startup pages and the default search engine again, then inspect installed applications, scheduled security tools and browser policies. A returning setting means the browser profile is being modified after you repair it. Resetting repeatedly without removing that cause will only erase more customizations.

Searches still redirect after removal

Confirm that the suspicious extension is absent from every browser profile, not merely disabled in one window. Remove unfamiliar search providers, review notification and site permissions, and run a full computer scan. If redirects continue in multiple browsers, prioritize system-level investigation.

The browser will not start normally

Use the operating system’s application-repair or uninstall controls only after preserving any needed profile data. If the browser opens in a safe or troubleshooting mode, remove the extension and review settings there. Do not delete profile folders blindly; they may contain bookmarks, passwords or history that a supported reset would retain.

The problem began on a work or school computer

Stop changing policy-controlled settings and contact the administrator. The extension may be required, centrally deployed or part of endpoint security. Give the administrator the extension name, changed settings, timestamps and screenshots.

Compare the recovery choices before acting

Action Best use Data and customization impact What it cannot prove
Disable extension You need to stop its activity while investigating. Leaves the extension installed and leaves altered settings in place. It does not show that the computer is clean.
Remove extension The add-on is identifiable and removal is permitted. Removes that add-on, but changed homepage, search and permissions may remain. It does not remove a separate installer or policy.
Chrome Reset Chrome profile settings remain damaged after the extension is gone. Resets broad settings while retaining saved bookmarks and passwords; cookies and site data, extensions and themes are changed. It is not a full malware-removal operation.
Firefox Refresh Firefox customizations and add-ons need a documented profile refresh. Retains named personal data but removes extensions, themes, permissions, added search engines and other customizations. It does not remove malicious software outside the profile.
System scan and app removal Changes recur, multiple browsers are affected, or software is unfamiliar. Can remove the component that reinstalls an extension; follow the security product’s findings carefully. A clean scan does not guarantee that every account or policy issue is resolved.

Verification checklist after recovery

  • Restart the computer, then open the browser.
  • Confirm the suspicious extension is removed, not merely hidden or disabled.
  • Check homepage, startup pages, new-tab behavior and default search engine.
  • Look for unfamiliar pinned tabs, toolbars, themes, notifications and site permissions.
  • Open the extensions manager again after a second restart to ensure the add-on did not return.
  • Check whether a management notice remains and determine whether it is legitimate.
  • Run a full security scan if any symptom returns.
  • Only after the browser and computer are stable, sign in again and change credentials if the extension may have seen sensitive sessions.

What not to do

  • Do not assume a browser reset removes a malicious program from the operating system.
  • Do not delete all browser data before checking whether bookmarks, passwords or autofill information need to be preserved.
  • Do not remove legitimate work, school or security extensions without confirming ownership of the device.
  • Do not use registry edits as a casual fix for a management message.
  • Do not install an unknown “extension remover” or download software from an unofficial mirror.
  • Do not claim that changed settings alone prove account compromise; investigate and secure accounts based on the extension’s permissions and your actual activity.
