On a supported Samsung Galaxy, open Quick settings, tap Screen recorder, choose whether to capture sound, and tap Start recording. After the countdown, the phone captures the display until you stop it from the floating toolbar. The finished video appears in Gallery. Button names and available controls vary by Galaxy model and One UI version.
What you need before recording
Samsung’s built-in recorder works on Galaxy phones and tablets that support Screen recorder. Samsung’s current guidance identifies Galaxy devices running One UI 2 or later, including examples from the Galaxy S, Z and A families. That does not mean every model in those families has identical controls: processor, region, carrier firmware and One UI release can change what appears. Check your own Quick panel first.
Samsung’s support pages are the best reference for model-specific behavior. See Samsung Gulf’s Galaxy screen-recording guide and Samsung Jordan’s device guide for regional model lists and menu examples.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Have enough free storage for the video you intend to make.
- Close confidential notifications or apps if the recording will be shared.
- Confirm whether you need internal media audio, microphone narration, or a silent clip.
- Do not assume protected streaming video, photos or other copyrighted material can be captured.
A short test is worthwhile before a long tutorial or gameplay session. It confirms that your model exposes the expected sound mode, that the microphone behaves as intended, and that the app you plan to show does not block capture. Play the test in Gallery before continuing.

Record your Samsung screen in five steps
- Open Quick settings. Swipe down from the top of the display. On many Galaxy versions, swipe down a second time to expand the full panel.
- Tap Screen recorder. If the tile is visible, tapping it opens the recording setup dialog.
- Choose a sound mode. Select the option offered on your device: no sound, media sound, or media sound plus microphone.
- Tap Start recording. A countdown gives you time to move to the screen you want to show. Capture begins when the countdown ends.
- Stop or pause from the floating toolbar. Tap the pause control to temporarily suspend capture, or tap stop to finish. The completed clip is saved and can be opened from Gallery.
The exact toolbar may also include a pen for live annotation and a selfie-camera button. These controls are optional and are not present on every Galaxy model or software release.
The countdown is part of the normal workflow, not an error or a second confirmation screen. Use those seconds to put the app in its starting state, then let the capture begin without repeatedly tapping the display. When the demonstration is over, use the toolbar’s stop control so the phone can close the session and write the file.
If Screen recorder is missing from Quick settings
The recorder may be installed but not pinned to the visible Quick panel. Open Quick settings, then open the panel’s editing controls. Depending on the One UI layout, tap the three-dot More options button and choose Edit buttons, or swipe across the available tiles and tap the + button. Find Screen recorder, add it to the active buttons, and save the arrangement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Menu placement changes between devices and software releases, so look for an edit, plus or pencil control rather than a particular icon position. If Screen recorder is not listed among the available buttons at all, verify your model and One UI version. Samsung’s model-specific support information can confirm whether the built-in feature is supported.
Check the expanded panel rather than only the first row of icons. A tile can be available but positioned on a later page or below the initially visible buttons. If editing controls still show no Screen recorder tile, the absence is more likely a compatibility difference than a hidden switch. Samsung recommends a screen-recording app from the Play Store or Galaxy Store when the built-in tool is not supported.
Choose the right sound setting
The sound choice determines what the finished video contains. Samsung commonly exposes three modes, although your phone may show fewer or use slightly different wording.
| Option | What it captures | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| None | No recorded audio | Silent demonstrations, captions added later, or clips where ambient sound is unwanted |
| Media | Audio produced by apps and system media | Gameplay, app demonstrations and showing a video’s sound without narration |
| Media and mic | Media audio plus sound from the phone’s microphone | Live commentary, lessons and narrated walkthroughs |
Choose Media when viewers need to hear a game or app but not the room around you. Choose Media and mic when your spoken explanation must be recorded at the same time. Choose None when the clip should be silent or you plan to add narration later. Because the labels and available choices differ, use the wording shown by your own recorder rather than assuming every Galaxy offers all three.

A call or protected app may behave differently from an ordinary app. Samsung Australia states that its Screen recorder does not record phone, VOIP or video calls; that is regional Samsung guidance and should not be treated as an identical guarantee for every model or market. The Australian explanation is available in Samsung’s screenshots and screen-recording support page.
Adjust quality and optional controls
Before recording, open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. The labels and available controls depend on the device. Samsung documents settings for recording sound, video quality and selfie-video size in this area.

| Setting or control | What to check | Model-dependent detail |
|---|---|---|
| Sound | Set the default audio choice before opening the recorder | Some devices list None, Media, and Media and mic; others may offer a different subset |
| Video quality | Choose the resolution level offered by your phone | Available levels vary; higher quality generally creates larger files, but Samsung’s pages do not promise the same choices on every model |
| Selfie video size | Set the size of the front-camera overlay when that feature is available | The overlay itself may be absent on some devices |
| Drawing tools | Use the pen control from the live toolbar to mark the screen | Availability and pen options vary by One UI version |
| Capture area | Look for a full-screen or area-selection prompt if your model provides one | Samsung’s broad support guidance does not promise selected-area recording across all Galaxy devices |
Changing these settings affects subsequent recordings; it does not alter a clip that has already been saved. If a setting is not present, the absence normally reflects the model or software build rather than a hidden toggle.
There is no universal Samsung specification for one resolution, frame rate or selfie-overlay size across the S, Z and A families. Select the quality level your phone actually lists. A higher option can be useful for small interface text, while a lower option can make a long demonstration easier to store and share; the available choices and resulting file sizes remain device-dependent.
Use the floating toolbar while recording
Pause and resume
Pause when you need to change screens without including the transition. Resume from the same toolbar when you are ready. Pausing is different from stopping: stopping finalizes the video, while pausing keeps the current recording session open.
Stop and save
Tap the square stop control when the demonstration is complete. The phone closes the capture session and writes the video to storage. Avoid powering off the device or force-closing the recorder immediately after tapping stop; allow the save operation to finish.
Annotate the screen
If a pen icon is shown, tap it and draw over the live display. This is useful for circling a button or pointing to a setting. The marks become part of the recorded video, so turn the tool off when you no longer want annotations visible.
Add a selfie-camera overlay
Some Galaxy models show a person-shaped or camera control that places the front-camera feed over the screen. Use it when viewers need to see your reactions or a presenter during a tutorial. The overlay’s size can be configurable under the screenshots and screen-recorder settings, and the feature is not universal.
Use optional controls only when they serve the explanation. An annotation can identify a setting, while a selfie overlay can show a presenter, but either one becomes permanent visual content in the saved clip. If the toolbar on your phone has no pen or camera control, record without it rather than looking for a setting that your software does not provide.
Find the finished recording
Open Gallery and look for the newest video. Samsung documents Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings as the default folder. On devices that expose a storage-location option, the destination may be changed in the screenshots and screen-recorder settings.
If Gallery does not show the clip immediately, wait briefly for media indexing, then close and reopen Gallery. You can also use the phone’s file manager to browse the documented folder. A missing file after a completed stop usually indicates that the save was interrupted, storage was full, or the recording was blocked by the app or content being captured.

Moving the file to another folder or service is optional; the documented default is the DCIM Screen recordings folder.

Recording limits and protected content
Software-version limits published by Samsung
Samsung’s Jordan support article gives version-specific limits. These figures are Samsung’s published limits for the stated software combinations, not a promise that a device can record indefinitely when storage, heat, battery or another interruption becomes a factor.
| Software combination | Published limit | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Android 10 with One UI 2.5 | Up to one hour or 4 GB | Recording stops when either the time or file-size limit is reached |
| Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later | No file-size or recording-time limit stated by Samsung | Normal device constraints still apply, including available storage and any interruption from the phone or app |
These limits are attributed to Samsung’s 2026 support guidance. A later One UI release, regional firmware or individual model can expose different behavior. “No file-size or recording-time limit” should therefore be read as no limit stated in that software guidance, not as unlimited storage or a guarantee that every session will continue without interruption.
Copyright and restricted screens
Samsung cautions that copyright-protected photos or videos may not record. A protected app can produce a blank, black or incomplete area even though the recorder itself starts normally. This is an intentional content restriction, not necessarily a fault with your phone. Do not bypass it by using an unverified recording method.
Test the exact app or media you intend to capture. A home screen or settings page may record normally while a protected video does not. The recorder’s ability to start does not prove that every item displayed on the phone is capturable.

The Screen recorder tile still does not appear
- Expand Quick settings fully and check the edit screen, not only the first row of tiles.
- Restart the phone, then check the available buttons again.
- Confirm the Galaxy model and One UI version against Samsung’s supported-model information.
- Install pending system updates if your device offers them, then revisit the Quick panel.
If the feature is not supported, Samsung suggests looking for a screen-recording app in the Play Store or Galaxy Store. Treat third-party apps as a fallback: review the permissions they request, especially microphone, storage and accessibility access, before recording private material.
The video has no sound
- Reopen the recorder and verify that Media or Media and mic is selected rather than None.
- For narration, check that microphone permission is allowed and that the microphone is not being used exclusively by another app.
- Make a short test with ordinary media before recording a long tutorial; protected content and calls may not provide recordable audio.
The recording is black or stops immediately
- Test a standard home-screen or settings page. If that works, the original app may be protecting its content.
- Check free storage and remove or move large files before trying again.
- For long captures, keep the phone connected to reliable power and avoid actions that force the recorder to close.
The file is not in Gallery
Confirm that you tapped stop rather than merely leaving the toolbar, then check Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings with a file manager. Reopen Gallery to trigger indexing. If there is no file in that folder, the save may have failed because recording was interrupted, storage was unavailable, or the captured content was restricted.
Practical recording workflow for tutorials and gameplay
- Prepare the scene. Open the first screen you want viewers to see and dismiss notifications that reveal private information.
- Set audio deliberately. Choose Media for app sound, Media and mic for narration, or None for a silent clip.
- Confirm the quality setting. Use the quality option under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder that matches your intended audience and available storage.
- Run a short test. Record a few seconds, stop, and play it in Gallery. Confirm that the image, sound and any selfie overlay look correct.
- Make the full recording. Start from Quick settings, wait for the countdown, and use pause or annotation only when it improves the explanation.
- Stop cleanly and verify the file. Play the saved clip before deleting the source material or sharing it.
This workflow catches incorrect sound selection and restricted-app behavior before they ruin a long capture. It also gives you a chance to remove the selfie overlay or annotation controls if they distract from the screen.
For a narrated lesson, prepare the opening screen first, select Media and mic, and keep the pen available only for moments when a visual pointer helps. For gameplay, Media may be preferable if you do not want room noise; for a silent software demonstration, None avoids unwanted background audio. These are choices among the controls your device exposes, not universal presets.

When the built-in recorder is not enough
If your Galaxy does not support Screen recorder, Samsung’s documented fallback is to search for a screen-recording app in the Play Store or Galaxy Store. The built-in tool remains preferable when available because it is integrated with the phone’s Quick panel and Gallery workflow, but unsupported devices require a separate app.
Choose any fallback cautiously. Check the developer, permissions, privacy policy and whether the app places a watermark or imposes its own time limit. Do not grant access to calls, messages or accessibility features unless the app’s function genuinely requires it. Availability, behavior and fees for third-party apps change over time, so Samsung’s store listings are the authoritative place to check current options.
No separate microphone, tripod, storage device or paid accessory is required for the built-in workflow. The phone’s own recorder is the primary solution; a third-party app is only a compatibility fallback when Samsung’s tile is unavailable.

How do I record my screen on a Galaxy phone?
Swipe down to open Quick settings, expand the panel if needed, tap Screen recorder, choose the sound mode, and tap Start recording. Wait for the countdown, then stop from the floating toolbar. Open Gallery to view the saved clip.
Why can’t I find Screen recorder on my Samsung?
Open the Quick panel editor using More options > Edit buttons or the plus control, depending on your One UI layout. Add the tile if it is available. If it is absent from the editor, check your model and One UI version because Samsung supports the built-in recorder only on compatible combinations.
Can I record internal sound and my voice together?
Choose Media and mic when your device offers it. This combines app or system media with microphone input. Make a short test because microphone audio can include room noise, and calls or protected apps may not record normally.
Where are Samsung screen recordings stored?
Samsung lists Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings as the default location. The video also appears in Gallery. Some devices expose a storage-location setting under the screenshots and screen-recorder options.
Can Samsung’s recorder capture a phone or video call?
Samsung Australia states that Screen recorder does not record phone, VOIP or video calls. That is Samsung Australia’s regional guidance, so behavior should not be assumed identical on every model or in every market.
Why is my recording black?
Copyright-protected photos or videos and other protected app content may block capture. Test a home-screen or Settings page. If ordinary screens record but the original app remains black, the app is likely enforcing a content restriction rather than the recorder failing.

How long can a Galaxy screen recording last?
Samsung’s published figures say up to one hour or 4 GB for Android 10 with One UI 2.5, and no file-size or recording-time limit stated for Android 11 with One UI 3.0 or later. Storage, battery, heat, app restrictions and other device conditions can still interrupt a recording.
Can I record only part of the screen?
Some models may offer a full-screen or area-selection choice, but Samsung’s broad support guidance does not promise selected-area recording on every Galaxy device. Use the capture-area option only if it appears in your recorder.
Key points to remember
- Start in Quick settings, select the sound mode, and tap Start recording after the countdown.
- Screen recorder availability and toolbar controls depend on Galaxy model and One UI version.
- Settings for sound, video quality and selfie-video size are under Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder when supported.
- Recordings normally appear in Gallery and use Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings as Samsung’s documented default path.
- Protected content and, according to Samsung Australia, phone, VOIP and video calls may not be recordable.
- Samsung lists a limit of up to one hour or 4 GB for Android 10 with One UI 2.5; newer stated software combinations have no file-size or recording-time limit in that guidance, but storage and interruptions still matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to screen-record on a Samsung Galaxy?
Open Quick settings, tap Screen recorder, select None, Media, or Media and mic, then tap Start recording. After the countdown, stop from the floating toolbar and open Gallery.
What should I do if Screen recorder is missing from the Quick panel?
Use the panel editor—More options and Edit buttons, or the plus control on some layouts—to add the tile. If it is not offered there, check your Galaxy model and One UI version; Samsung recommends a Play Store or Galaxy Store app for unsupported devices.
Does screen recording capture notifications?
The recorder captures the displayed screen, so notifications visible during capture can appear in the video. Dismiss confidential notifications before starting if you plan to share the clip.
Where does the video save?
The default documented path is Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings, and the clip should also appear in Gallery. A supported device may provide a setting to change the storage location.
Why is there no audio in my recording?
Check that the selected mode is Media or Media and mic rather than None. For narration, verify microphone permission and test ordinary media because protected content and calls may not provide recordable audio.

Can I add my face while recording?
Some Galaxy models provide a selfie-camera overlay and a setting for its size. The control is optional and not available on every model or One UI release.
The Bottom Line
On a supported Samsung Galaxy, the built-in method is Quick settings → Screen recorder → choose sound → Start recording. Use the floating toolbar to pause, annotate when offered, or stop, then find the video in Gallery or Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings. Because menus, quality choices, limits and restrictions vary by model and One UI version, test the exact app and audio setup before making an important recording.
