Use Apache JMeter’s HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder as a local proxy: create the Recording plan template, set the target host, start the recorder, point a browser at the recorder’s host and port, complete one clean journey, then stop and save the plan. HTTPS recording additionally requires trusting JMeter’s generated ApacheJMeterTemporaryRootCA.crt certificate. The captured requests are only a draft; filtering, cookie management, parameterization, correlation, validation, and non-GUI execution turn it into a dependable load-test scenario.
What JMeter recording captures
The HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder intercepts traffic from a normal browser and creates HTTP request samples in the JMeter test plan. It records the requests produced by page loads, form submissions, navigation, asynchronous calls, and other browser activity that passes through its proxy. It does not understand your business goal automatically, decide which requests matter, or produce a production-ready load script without editing.

Before you start
Install and launch JMeter
Use a JMeter installation that can run its graphical interface and a compatible Java runtime. Start JMeter on the machine that will act as the recording proxy. Keep the browser and JMeter on the same machine for the simplest setup; if the browser is elsewhere, use the recorder machine’s reachable hostname or IP address rather than assuming localhost will resolve to the right computer.

Prepare a clean browser session
- Use a private or otherwise clean browsing session when you need predictable cookies and authentication state.
- Close unrelated tabs and extensions that generate background requests.
- Know the application’s entry URL, test account, and the exact journey you want to model.
- Plan to reset the browser’s proxy settings immediately after recording.
Create the recording test plan
- Open JMeter and select Templates….
- Choose the Recording template and create the plan.
- In HTTP Request Defaults, enter the target server name or IP address. Set a default protocol or port only when it matches the application you are testing; individual requests can still override defaults.
- Locate the recorder component, commonly shown as HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder. Set its listening port. Apache’s example uses host
localhostand port8888; use another free port if that port is occupied. - Choose or create a Recording Controller as the destination for captured samples. Keeping one journey under its own controller makes later review, disabling, and reuse easier.
Do not start browsing until the recorder is listening. If another program already owns the selected port, JMeter will not receive the browser traffic; choose an unused port and use that same value in the browser proxy settings.
Configure the browser proxy
Manual proxy values
Open the browser’s network or connection settings and select its manual proxy configuration. Enter the recorder host and port, such as localhost and 8888 when both applications run on the same machine. Enable the proxy for all protocols, or explicitly configure HTTP and HTTPS to use the recorder. If the browser offers a “no proxy for” or bypass list, remove the application host and any entry that would bypass the recorder.
For a remote browser, use the JMeter machine’s hostname or IP address and ensure the port is reachable through the local firewall. Do not use localhost in that case: it points to the browser’s own machine, not the machine running JMeter.
Confirm that traffic actually goes through JMeter
Start the recorder, browse to the application, and watch for samples in the Recording Controller. Then stop the recorder temporarily and try loading a page. If the browser continues to work normally while JMeter is stopped, it is probably bypassing the proxy. Correct the proxy host, port, protocol coverage, and bypass list before recording anything else.

Record HTTPS traffic safely
HTTPS prevents a proxy from reading request contents unless the browser trusts a certificate generated for the recording session. When you start JMeter’s HTTPS recorder, it creates a temporary certificate authority file named ApacheJMeterTemporaryRootCA.crt. Install that certificate in the recording browser’s trusted authorities, following the browser or operating system’s certificate-management interface. The exact screens differ by browser and platform.
- Start the recorder so JMeter generates the temporary CA certificate.
- Locate
ApacheJMeterTemporaryRootCA.crtin JMeter’s user or working directory. - Import it into the browser profile used solely for recording and trust it for identifying websites or equivalent HTTPS authority.
- Restart the browser if its certificate store requires a restart.
- With the manual proxy enabled, open the HTTPS application and check that requests appear in JMeter.
Only trust this temporary CA in a controlled test profile. Remove it from the browser or operating-system trust store after recording if the profile will be used for ordinary browsing. A browser error such as unknown_ca means the browser does not trust the JMeter-generated CA (or is using a different profile); reinstall or accept the certificate in the profile that is actually making the requests.

Capture one clean user journey
- Start the recorder and verify that the Recording Controller is selected as the destination.
- Open the application’s entry page in the prepared browser session.
- Perform one complete, deliberate journey from start to finish. Use the intended account, enter representative values, and wait for each page or asynchronous operation to finish.
- Avoid refreshing pages, opening unrelated links, switching between multiple scenarios, or correcting mistakes mid-recording. Those actions create requests that are difficult to interpret later.
- When the journey is complete, stop the recorder before changing browser settings.
- Save the test plan as a
.jmxfile.
Recording one journey at a time gives each controller a clear purpose. If you need several scenarios, repeat the process in separate controllers or plans rather than mixing unrelated traffic in a single capture.
Filter noise before it overwhelms the plan
Modern pages request far more than the business transaction: images, style sheets, JavaScript bundles, fonts, analytics endpoints, advertising, telemetry, and third-party widgets. Include and exclude patterns in the recorder let you reduce that noise while you capture. Filtering before recording is preferable to deleting hundreds of irrelevant samples afterward.

Useful filtering decisions
- Include the application’s own hostnames and API paths that participate in the transaction.
- Exclude image, font, CSS, and static JavaScript resources unless rendering or a specific cache behavior is part of the test objective.
- Exclude analytics, advertising, error-reporting, and other third-party hosts that are not part of your system under test.
- Keep an asynchronous API request when it changes the business result, even if the browser initiated it in the background.
Patterns must match the recorder’s syntax and the actual host or URL. Review a short capture after applying filters; an over-broad exclusion can remove a login call, token endpoint, or transaction API that the scenario needs.
Turn the raw capture into a reusable script
Add runtime cookie handling
Add an HTTP Cookie Manager to the relevant Thread Group or controller when the application uses cookies. Cookies forwarded by the browser during recording are not automatically stored as reusable runtime state in the saved plan. The manager lets each virtual user maintain its own cookie jar and receive or send cookies as the application expects.

Use User Defined Variables for values that recur throughout the plan, such as protocol, host, port, tenant, or a fixed test path. Replace literal values in HTTP requests with JMeter variable references. This makes the same scenario easier to move between environments and prevents a host change from requiring edits to every sampler.
Supply varying user data
Use CSV Data Set Config for usernames, search terms, account numbers, or other rows of test data. Configure the file path, column names, sharing mode, and end-of-file behavior to match the way virtual users should consume the data. For generated values, JMeter functions such as __counter and __time can create sequence numbers or timestamps directly in request fields. Ensure that generated values satisfy the application’s format and uniqueness rules.

Correlate dynamic values
Recorded requests often contain values that are valid only for the original browser session: CSRF tokens, login assertions, cart identifiers, or server-generated IDs. Capture those values from the response immediately before they are needed, then reference the extracted variable in later requests.
- Use a JSON Extractor when the response is JSON and the value can be selected with a JSON expression.
- Use a Regular Expression Extractor when the value appears in text or markup that is not conveniently represented as JSON.
- Replace the stale recorded value in subsequent samplers with the extractor variable.
- Check the extractor’s debug output with a single user before attempting a load test.
Correlation is different from parameterization: parameterization supplies deliberate test data, while correlation carries a value generated by the server from one request to the next. A script can require both.

Organize and simplify
Keep business steps under a Recording Controller and rename samplers so their purpose is clear instead of leaving opaque recorded labels. Remove duplicate navigations, failed attempts, static resources, and requests that are unrelated to the user journey. Preserve a request when removing it would change authentication, state, or the transaction’s result.
Check request assumptions
- Confirm that the protocol, host, port, path, method, query parameters, and body are correct.
- Check that headers are not carrying browser-specific or one-time values that should be generated at runtime.
- Verify that cookies, extracted tokens, and CSV variables are referenced in the correct order.
- Make sure each virtual user has the credentials and data it needs without sharing mutable state accidentally.
Validate and execute the scenario
Use JMeter’s validation while debugging
Save the plan, select the Thread Group, and use Validate while debugging. Validation helps expose failed requests and configuration problems before you add users. Inspect response data and sampler results, not only the overall completion message: a request can return an HTTP response while the application has rejected the operation in its body.

Debug in the GUI, generate load without it

After a small validated run, execute a substantial test from a terminal in non-GUI mode. A typical command is:
jmeter -n -t test.jmx -l results.jtl -e -o reportHere -n selects non-GUI mode, -t supplies the JMX plan, -l writes result data, and -e -o creates an HTML dashboard in the specified report directory. Review errors, response times, and response content before increasing users, ramp-up, or loop count.
Recording versus building requests manually

Choose recording when understanding the browser’s request sequence is the main challenge. Choose manual construction when you already know the protocol and need a minimal, highly controlled plan. In either case, dynamic state and realistic data require deliberate modeling.
Troubleshoot common recording failures
No samples appear
- Confirm that the recorder is running and listening on the port entered in the browser.
- Check that HTTP and HTTPS both use the recorder and that the application host is not in the bypass list.
- If the browser still works after the recorder is stopped, it is bypassing JMeter; correct the proxy host, port, or protocol settings.
- For a remote browser, replace
localhostwith the JMeter machine’s reachable hostname or IP and check firewall access. - Verify that filters are not excluding every application request.
HTTPS fails with a certificate error
Install or accept ApacheJMeterTemporaryRootCA.crt in the exact browser profile making the requests. Restart the browser when required, confirm that the recorder generated the certificate before import, and remove conflicting proxy or certificate settings from an old profile. The unknown_ca error specifically indicates that the issuing CA is not trusted by that client.
The plan contains too much unrelated traffic
Stop and repeat the capture in a private session, close unrelated tabs, disable background activity where practical, and add include or exclude patterns for static resources, analytics, and third-party hosts. Review the resulting controller rather than trying to preserve every browser request.
The replay fails even though recording succeeded
- Add an HTTP Cookie Manager so runtime users receive and resend cookies.
- Find values that changed between runs, such as CSRF tokens or IDs, and extract them with JSON Extractor or Regular Expression Extractor.
- Replace hard-coded usernames, search terms, and other inputs with CSV variables or JMeter functions.
- Run one user with response inspection and confirm that each extractor produces a value before increasing concurrency.
The browser cannot connect to the recorder
Check that the selected port is free, JMeter is listening, the browser’s proxy type is manual, and any local firewall allows the connection. A browser configured to proxy only HTTP will not send HTTPS traffic to the recorder; enable both protocols or the browser’s all-protocol option.
