The reliable method is layered: disable licensed music in the game, keep game and microphone audio on separate recording tracks, stop or hide capture before graphic scenes, and inspect the exported file before publishing. Streamer modes and platform muting reduce exposure, but neither grants permission to use copyrighted audio nor automatically blocks every inappropriate image.

What you can and cannot prevent

Copyright and content moderation are separate problems. A game may include licensed songs that you are allowed to hear while playing but not redistribute in a video or livestream. A cinematic may be acceptable for the game’s intended audience yet unsuitable for your channel or for an advertiser-friendly monetization policy. Solve each problem with the control that actually affects it.

  • Music rights: remove or replace the song in the game, exclude that audio from your recording mix, or edit it out before publication.
  • Graphic imagery: use a title’s content filter when available, avoid recording during known scenes, and cut or obscure footage after reviewing it.
  • Platform enforcement: automated detection can mute or restrict a video, but detection is not a licence. You remain responsible for the material in the final upload.

There is no universal capture-software switch that recognizes every copyrighted song or graphic scene before it reaches a recording. The safest workflow is therefore deliberate and title-specific.

Before you press Record

1. Check the game’s own documentation

Open the game’s audio, accessibility, privacy, and streaming settings, then check its official support or licence information. Look for names such as Streamer Mode, Copyrighted Music, Licensed Music, or Mute Music. Read the wording carefully: a mode may replace songs only in certain menus, or it may cover the game’s soundtrack but not music from a radio station, DLC, trailer, or another application.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Twitch advises creators to review a game’s official licence or EULA for streaming terms. A game’s permission to stream gameplay does not automatically cover every song supplied by a third-party label.

2. Make a content map

Before a long session, note where the game contains story cinematics, executions, medical imagery, sexual content, hateful symbols, or other scenes you do not want to publish. Mark likely locations in the campaign, quest names, or mission checkpoints. This lets you pause capture before the scene rather than trying to discover it in an hours-long file.

3. Choose the audio sources you actually need

  • Game sound effects and dialogue
  • Your microphone
  • Voice chat, if you have permission to record other participants
  • Music from a separate application, if you intentionally want it and have distribution rights

Avoid recording a single “everything the computer plays” mix when your goal is to exclude one source. Separate sources make it possible to mute or remove the unwanted channel without destroying dialogue or effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Prepare a short test

Record one or two minutes that include gameplay, dialogue, a menu transition, and your microphone. Stop the test, open the file in the same player you will use for editing, and confirm that the music is absent or isolated on the expected track. Test again after changing a game setting; some titles apply streamer-mode changes only after restarting a level or the game.

Use the game’s streamer mode or music mute first

Sea of Thieves: Mute Copyrighted Audio

Sea of Thieves documents licensed music in parts of the game and provides the title-specific path Game Options > Settings > Streamer Mode Support > Mute Copyrighted Audio. This is an example of a game control, not a menu path that should be assumed in other games.

The same support guidance discusses hiding player names and invite notifications. Those privacy options are useful when recording, and you should avoid leaving a front-end menu visible while live if it can expose account or invite information.

Hi-Fi RUSH: replace songs with streaming-safe tracks

KRAFTON says Hi-Fi RUSH replaces licensed songs with original tracks when Streamer Mode is enabled. Its documented path is Options > Gameplay > Other Settings. Replacement is preferable to lowering the master volume because it preserves effects and dialogue while changing the soundtrack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KRAFTON describes the feature as risk reduction, not a guarantee: “Streamer Mode is designed to reduce copyright risks but cannot guarantee complete protection.” External platform rules and automated detection can still affect a video.

Other publisher guidance

Ubisoft recommends turning off in-game music before recording footage that will be posted when a title contains licensed music. The exact option and coverage vary by game, so verify the individual title rather than assuming every Ubisoft release behaves the same way.

If a game has no streamer mode, lowering music to zero is the practical fallback. It does not remove music already embedded in a cutscene or an external application, so test the result and listen to the captured file.

Configure recording software so audio stays controllable

Recording software can separate sources; it cannot decide whether you have rights to a song. Current OBS Studio documentation includes an Application Audio Capture guide, a Multiple Audio Track Recording guide, and guidance for capturing console footage. Use those current instructions for the interface and operating-system details, which can change between versions.

Recommended source layout

Source Purpose Suggested treatment
Game application audio Effects, dialogue, and any remaining game audio Put on its own track so music can be removed or checked separately.
Microphone Your commentary Record separately; monitor for clipping and accidental private conversations.
Voice chat Other players’ voices Capture only with appropriate permission and keep it separate from your voice.
Desktop or system audio All other computer sounds Disable unless you specifically need it; it can reintroduce music from another app.

Set up separate tracks

  1. Add the game as an application-audio source when your operating system and OBS version support that method. If the game cannot be isolated, use the system-audio method documented for your setup and remove unrelated applications from the mix.
  2. Add your microphone as a separate source. Do not rely on a single combined track if you expect to edit music or chat later.
  3. Assign sources to the recording tracks you intend to keep. A track that is not selected for the recording output will not be available in the file, so verify the recording-track selection before starting.
  4. Disable notification sounds, browser tabs, media players, and launchers that are not part of the gameplay. A muted game soundtrack is irrelevant if another application is still playing the same song through desktop audio.
  5. Make a local test recording and inspect every track. Confirm that dialogue, effects, and commentary are present and that the unwanted music is either absent or isolated for deletion.

Separate tracks provide editing control, not permission. If the final published mix still contains a song you are not licensed to distribute, the technical setup has not solved the rights issue.

Console gameplay: when a capture card helps

A compatible USB HDMI capture card can transfer console video and audio to a computer for recording software. It is optional for a direct PC recording and does not filter songs, hide graphic scenes, or grant distribution rights. Check compatibility among the console, capture card, computer port, resolution, refresh rate, and recording software before buying hardware.

  1. Enable the game’s music mute or streamer mode on the console before connecting the recording session.
  2. Connect the console’s HDMI output to the capture device and the device to the computer according to its documentation.
  3. Add the capture device as a video source in your recording software and confirm whether its audio appears as a separate source or as part of the capture source.
  4. Route microphone and any permitted chat audio separately where possible.
  5. Record a short test that includes a menu, gameplay, and a scene transition. Review both the picture and every audio track before recording the full session.

For a console that cannot provide separate audio channels, the game’s own mute or replacement mode becomes especially important because post-recording separation may not be possible.

How to avoid graphic scenes

Use title-specific filters where they exist

Some games offer reduced gore, flashing-light controls, nudity filters, or options that replace a scene. Enable the setting before capture and verify what it changes. A filter may affect gameplay models but leave a pre-rendered cinematic unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause or stop capture around known scenes

When no suitable filter exists, stop recording before the transition, play through the scene privately, and resume after the content has ended. If you need continuity, record the scene to a separate file and decide later whether it belongs in the published cut. Do not assume a capture application will recognize and block the image automatically.

Review the complete file

Scan the recording from beginning to end, including loading screens, menus, death screens, replay cameras, and post-credit sequences. Check for brief flashes as well as long cinematics. Mark timecodes for cuts, blurs, crop changes, warning cards, or audio removal. Review the exported file again because an edit can reveal a frame that was not obvious in the timeline.

Account for other people’s privacy

Hide player names, invite notifications, direct messages, and voice-chat participants when the game provides those controls. Obtain consent before publishing another person’s voice, and remove identifying information that appears in overlays or notifications.

During recording: a practical operating procedure

  1. Start the game, apply the streamer mode or music setting, and wait for it to take effect.
  2. Check the recording mixer: game audio should move on the game channel, your voice on the microphone channel, and no unrelated desktop source should be active.
  3. Record a short local sample and listen to it before beginning the real session.
  4. Keep your content map visible. Pause or stop capture before a marked scene, then resume after you have cleared it.
  5. Watch for settings that reset after changing chapters, loading a save, joining multiplayer, or launching a replay.
  6. Save the raw file in a protected location. Keep the original separate from edited exports so you can re-cut a scene without rerecording the session.

These checks are operational safeguards, not proof that a platform will accept the upload. Rights and platform policies still apply to the finished work.

Edit before publishing

Remove music without damaging the commentary

If music is on its own track, mute or delete that track and leave dialogue, effects, and your microphone intact. If music is mixed with everything else, use a clean recording from before the song began, cut the section, or replace it with audio you are authorized to distribute. Audio-separation tools can produce artifacts and are not a legal remedy.

Cut or obscure graphic footage

Cut the scene, replace it with a title card, crop or blur the relevant area, or add a clear warning where appropriate for your audience. A warning does not make prohibited content acceptable and does not change copyright status; it simply informs viewers. If the scene is central to the game’s story, explain the omission in the video description without displaying the material in a thumbnail.

Check the export

  • Play the final file with headphones and speakers.
  • Check the first and last seconds, transitions, and every muted section.
  • Confirm that no duplicate desktop-audio track reintroduces the song.
  • Inspect thumbnails, chapter previews, automatic short clips, and subtitles for frames or lyrics you removed from the main edit.
  • Keep project files and a note of the game setting used in case a platform asks how the audio was handled.

What Twitch and YouTube enforcement does—and does not—do

Twitch VOD and clip muting

Twitch scans archived videos and clips for copyrighted audio and may mute detected portions or remove clips. A muted VOD is not the same thing as a copyright strike, and automated muting is not permission to leave unauthorized material in the recording. Rights holders can still submit a formal claim when material remains.

Twitch also explains that buying a download, CD, or vinyl record does not give permission to make that audio available in a VOD: “Buying a copy of the audio, whether in the form of a digital download, CD, vinyl record, or other format, does not give you permission to make the audio available in a VOD on Twitch.” A personal music-streaming subscription generally grants listening access under its terms, not redistribution rights in a livestream recording.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Twitch mutes audio incorrectly, its help guidance describes an appeal process. Use it only when you can truthfully attest that you have the rights or that the flagged audio was not present. Do not appeal merely because the song was purchased or because the game played it automatically.

YouTube gaming monetization

YouTube’s gaming guidance addresses graphic gameplay and cinematics in the context of advertiser-friendly monetization. A treatment that helps a video meet monetization guidance is not a universal copyright safe harbor, and it does not guarantee that every restriction, age gate, claim, or regional rule will be avoided. Review the current policy when you publish because platform standards change.

Choose the control that matches the problem

Approach Where it acts Removes or changes Coverage and residual risk Requirements
In-game mute or streamer mode Game settings Licensed music, or replaces it in supported titles Title-specific; may not cover every song or cinematic, and does not guarantee platform acceptance A game option that actually covers the content
Separate recording tracks Capture software Game, microphone, chat, or desktop sources independently Gives editing control; does not grant a licence and fails if the final mix retains the song Supported audio capture and correct track assignment
Stop or pause capture Recording session Known graphic scenes before they enter the file Reliable only when scenes are known and capture is controlled; no automatic universal detection A content map and attention during play
Post-production edit Editor and exported file Music, frames, cinematics, overlays, and notifications Can fix mistakes, but mixed audio and missed frames may remain; the export must be checked again Time, an editable recording, and a final review
Platform detection Upload or archive service May mute, restrict, or flag detected material Not complete, not a licence, and not a substitute for rights review Compliance with the platform’s current rules

Troubleshooting common failures

The game is muted, but the song is still audible

Check whether the music is coming from desktop audio, a capture-card mix, voice chat, or a separate application. Temporarily disable each unrelated source, record again, and inspect the tracks rather than relying on the mixer meters alone.

Dialogue disappeared with the music

The title may mix dialogue and music into one channel, or you may have muted the entire game source. Restore the game channel, lower music through the title’s own setting, or replace the affected section during editing. Do not claim that a track is clean until you have listened to the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The streamer mode worked in gameplay but not in a cinematic

Some modes cover interactive music but not pre-rendered scenes. Test a cinematic before recording a full campaign, and plan to mute or cut that section if the licensed song remains.

A platform muted a section that sounded safe

Review the exact time range and all audio tracks. It may contain a brief menu cue, a trailer, another application, or a voice-chat participant’s music. If you genuinely have rights or the audio was absent, follow the platform’s documented appeal process; otherwise edit and re-upload.

A graphic frame appears in a thumbnail or clip

Replace the thumbnail, remove the chapter or short clip, and check automatically generated previews. Editing the long video does not necessarily update every derivative asset immediately.

The console capture has delayed or missing audio

Check the capture device’s supported signal format, audio monitoring path, and source assignment. Make a short test after each change. Keep the game’s music muted at the source because hardware troubleshooting cannot solve a rights problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable publication checklist

  • Read the game’s current streaming and music guidance.
  • Enable and test the title’s streamer mode, replacement soundtrack, or music mute.
  • Separate game, microphone, chat, and desktop audio where your setup supports it.
  • Disable unrelated applications and notifications.
  • Map graphic scenes and use title-specific filters when available.
  • Pause or stop capture around scenes that should not enter the recording.
  • Review the entire raw file, including menus and transitions.
  • Edit unauthorized music, graphic imagery, private information, and unapproved voices.
  • Play the exported file and inspect thumbnails, clips, chapters, and subtitles.
  • Check the current rules of the service where you will publish; treat muting or monetization decisions as platform actions, not evidence of permission.

Bottom line

Start at the game level, then build technical and editorial checks around it. A title-specific music mute or replacement mode is the cleanest first step; separate recording tracks preserve your ability to remove anything that slips through; deliberate capture and a complete edit are the only dependable ways to avoid unwanted graphic scenes. Capture cards and platform detection can support the workflow, but neither changes copyright ownership or guarantees an unrestricted upload.
