Use NVIDIA ShadowPlay from the NVIDIA App overlay. Turn on the in-game overlay, configure Video Capture, then press the shortcut for Instant Replay to save a recent moment or use Record for a longer session. ShadowPlay is reliable for local gameplay capture, screenshots and Highlights. Live broadcasting is less certain: NVIDIA’s current App material confirms capture features, while its detailed destination-specific streaming instructions describe the older GeForce Experience Share interface. Treat Twitch, YouTube Live and Facebook Live steps as legacy unless the streaming controls shown in your installed NVIDIA App match them.
What ShadowPlay does in the NVIDIA App
ShadowPlay is NVIDIA’s capture layer inside the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA describes four core functions:
- Instant Replay: a DVR-style buffer that can save the most recent gameplay. NVIDIA’s current product description specifies the last 30 seconds.
- Manual Record: starts and stops a conventional video recording for a match, tutorial, speedrun or entire session.
- Screenshots: captures a still image while you play.
- Highlights: saves supported in-game events when the game and driver expose highlight integration.
The overlay is separate from the game’s own recorder. It captures the rendered game output through the NVIDIA driver, so it can usually be opened without leaving the game. Exact hotkeys, labels and storage controls can change between NVIDIA App releases; use the labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on an older GeForce Experience tutorial.
Before you record
Install or update the NVIDIA App
Install the current NVIDIA App and allow it to update the graphics driver if an update is offered. Restart the computer after a driver installation when requested. ShadowPlay features and supported codecs are version- and GPU-dependent, so an old driver can hide settings described in newer release notes.

Enable the in-game overlay
Open the NVIDIA App settings and enable the in-game overlay. Launch a game, then use the overlay hotkey (commonly Alt+Z) to confirm that the capture panel appears. If nothing opens, check that the game is running on the NVIDIA GPU, the App is signed in if your build requires it, and no other overlay has claimed the same shortcut.
Check hardware and display limits
NVIDIA’s advertised ceilings are not guarantees for every system. Its current product page lists manual recording up to 8K HDR at 30 fps or 4K HDR at 120 fps. Those are capability claims subject to GPU generation, game output, display mode, driver, storage speed and selected encoder settings. A lower resolution or frame rate is often the practical choice for long recordings and smaller files.
NVIDIA App 11.0.8 release highlights state that 240-fps ShadowPlay recording is available for GeForce RTX 50-series and RTX 40-series GPUs. The release notes give the route Alt+Z > Settings > Video Capture. Do not assume that 240 fps appears on older GeForce cards or that a game can render 240 frames per second simply because the recorder can encode at that rate.
Configure capture settings
Open the overlay and enter its capture or Video Capture settings. The exact arrangement may differ by App release, but the decisions are the same:

| Setting | How to choose | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Use the game resolution for a straightforward clip; choose a lower output when file size or upload time matters. | Higher resolution preserves detail but produces larger files and may increase encoder and storage load. |
| Frame rate | Match the game and the intended destination. Use 60 fps for most gameplay; use 120 or 240 fps only when your GPU generation and workflow support it. | Higher frame rates make motion smoother but increase data rate and editing workload. |
| Bitrate or quality | Start with the App’s quality preset, then raise quality for fast motion or lower it for limited storage. | More bitrate generally improves detail while increasing file size. |
| Codec | Choose H.264 for broad playback and editing compatibility. Choose AV1 when your GPU, App version and editor support it. | AV1 can reduce size at similar visual quality, but older players and editors may not decode it. |
| HDR | Enable HDR only when the game, display and editing or playback chain are HDR-aware. | HDR can look washed out in software that expects standard dynamic range. |
| Audio | Decide whether to include game audio, microphone commentary or both, if those controls are available. | Separate commentary is easier to edit, while a single mixed track is simpler to publish. |
NVIDIA says RTX 40-series owners can record in AV1. NVIDIA App 11.0.8 release highlights also describe AV1 support for Record, Instant Replay and Highlights. A separate NVIDIA release statement describes “up to 40% compression efficiency” versus H.264; that is NVIDIA’s vendor comparison, not an independent test. Verify compatibility with the player and editor you intend to use before making AV1 your default.
Record a longer session with Manual Record
- Start the game and wait until you reach the scene you want to capture.
- Open the NVIDIA overlay with
Alt+Z, or use the configured Record shortcut. - Choose Record and start recording. A status indicator should show that capture is active.
- Play normally. Avoid filling the destination drive; high-resolution, high-frame-rate video consumes storage quickly.
- Open the overlay again and choose Stop, or press the stop shortcut.
- Open the App’s capture or gallery view to review the file and confirm its location. Because NVIDIA changes default folders between products and releases, use the path displayed by your installed App instead of assuming a legacy GeForce Experience folder.
For a long recording, make a short test first. Play for 20–30 seconds, stop, and open the resulting file in the program you will use for editing. This catches unsupported AV1, HDR color problems, missing microphone audio and an unexpectedly small or large output before you commit to an hours-long session.
Save the last 30 seconds with Instant Replay
Instant Replay continuously maintains a rolling buffer rather than saving every second as a permanent file. When something worth keeping happens, use the Instant Replay save shortcut or open the overlay and choose the save command. NVIDIA’s current App description says the saved window is the last 30 seconds.
The Tool Desk

- Play until the moment you want is complete.
- Press the configured Instant Replay save shortcut, or select the save option in the overlay.

Instant Replay must be enabled before the event occurs. Turning it on afterward cannot recover earlier gameplay. Older NVIDIA Share documentation describes longer replay windows, but that material belongs to the legacy interface; do not treat those durations as current NVIDIA App defaults.

Use screenshots and Highlights
Screenshots
Use the overlay’s screenshot command when you need a still image rather than a video. Confirm whether the App saves standard screenshots, HDR screenshots or both, and check the gallery for the exact file path. A screenshot captured from an HDR game may require color-managed software to display correctly.
Highlights
Highlights depends on game and driver integration. If a supported game exposes event detection, the App can save events such as a victory or notable elimination. Treat Highlights as an automated convenience, not a substitute for Instant Replay: unsupported games may show no events, and an event may not capture the context you wanted.
Choose H.264 or AV1
H.264: the compatibility choice
H.264 is the safer option when clips must open on older phones, browsers, editing suites or social platforms. It may require a higher bitrate than AV1 for similar detail, but predictable playback often saves time during editing and upload.
AV1: the newer efficiency choice
AV1 is available only on supported hardware and software. NVIDIA identifies RTX 40-series recording support, and its App release highlights extend AV1 to Record, Instant Replay and Highlights. NVIDIA’s “up to 40%” compression-efficiency figure is a manufacturer claim, not a universal result; game motion, resolution, bitrate and decoder behavior all affect the outcome. Keep H.264 selected if your editor imports AV1 incorrectly, audio is missing, or viewers report playback problems.

Can ShadowPlay stream live to Twitch or YouTube?
Be careful with the word stream. The current NVIDIA App material established for this guide confirms local capture, but it does not provide a current, complete broadcast procedure or a confirmed list of live destinations. NVIDIA’s older GeForce Experience Share guide documented direct broadcasting to Twitch, YouTube Live and Facebook Live. Those instructions apply to the legacy Share interface and should not be presented as current NVIDIA App controls.
To check your own installation, open the overlay while a game is running and look for a Broadcast, Live or similarly named control. If it is present, follow the destination, privacy and stream-key prompts shown by that App version and perform a private test. If it is absent, use a current streaming application that accepts a game capture source, with ShadowPlay used for local recording if desired. Do not paste a stream key into an unfamiliar field or assume that a legacy menu exists in your build.
A sensible workflow is to record locally while broadcasting through a separate, supported streaming application. Local capture gives you a clean copy if the live connection drops, while the streaming application handles destination authentication, chat and broadcast layout.
Improve microphone and camera input with NVIDIA Broadcast
NVIDIA Broadcast is separate from ShadowPlay. It can process microphone, speaker or webcam input for livestreaming and other applications. The setup is:

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Download and install NVIDIA Broadcast.
- Open Broadcast and choose the physical microphone, speakers and camera.
- Enable the effects you need, such as noise removal or camera background treatment.
- In your streaming or communication application, select the corresponding NVIDIA Broadcast virtual device instead of the physical device.
- Run a short recording or private stream to check sync, volume and image quality.
NVIDIA’s current Broadcast requirements list Windows 10 64-bit, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX or newer, at least 8 GB of RAM, and NVIDIA driver R570 or newer. NVIDIA recommends an Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher. Requirements are version-sensitive, so verify the live NVIDIA page before installing a newer release. NVIDIA says Virtual Key Light and Studio Voice require an RTX 3060 desktop GPU or higher.
A webcam and USB microphone are optional additions, not ShadowPlay prerequisites. NVIDIA also says an Elgato Stream Deck can optionally toggle Broadcast effects; it is a convenience controller, not a requirement for recording or streaming.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
The overlay does not appear
- Confirm the in-game overlay is enabled in NVIDIA App settings.
- Update the App and graphics driver, then restart Windows if requested.
- Try the default overlay shortcut and check for a conflict with the game or another overlay.
- Test a different game. Some protected or unusual rendering modes can restrict overlays.
Instant Replay saved nothing
- Make sure Instant Replay was enabled before the event.
- Check that the destination drive has free space and that the App can write to it.
- Open the gallery rather than searching only the old GeForce Experience folder.
- Lower resolution, frame rate or quality if the buffer is failing under heavy load.
The recording stutters or the game loses performance
- Reduce capture resolution or frame rate and close unnecessary GPU-heavy applications.
- Use a faster destination drive with adequate free space.
- Try H.264 if AV1 encoding is unavailable or unstable on your configuration.
- Check whether HDR or an unusually high frame-rate mode is creating a workload your system cannot sustain.
The video has no microphone or the wrong audio
- Recheck the selected microphone and audio-mix options in Video Capture.
- Confirm Windows permissions allow the App or streaming application to use the microphone.
- Make a short test file and inspect its audio tracks before recording a full session.
The file will not play or looks washed out
- Test the file in a current player that supports the selected codec.
- For AV1, switch to H.264 when the target editor or viewer lacks AV1 support.
- For HDR, use an HDR-aware display and color-managed software, or record in a standard-dynamic-range mode for broad compatibility.
A practical workflow for different goals
| Goal | Recommended workflow | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Save an unexpected play | Enable Instant Replay before playing; save the recent clip after the event. | It avoids recording the entire session and preserves the current 30-second window described by NVIDIA. |
| Record a tutorial or full match | Use Manual Record, test audio first, and stop the file when the session ends. | You control the complete start and end points. |
| Publish to many devices | Use H.264, moderate resolution and 60 fps unless you have a specific reason to use more. | Compatibility is usually more valuable than maximum capture specifications. |
| Archive high-quality footage | Use the highest supported resolution and frame rate your storage and editor can handle; consider AV1 on compatible RTX hardware. | You retain more detail, but files and editing demands increase. |
| Broadcast live | Verify that your current App exposes broadcast controls; otherwise pair local ShadowPlay capture with a current streaming application. | The confirmed NVIDIA App material does not establish a current destination list or universal broadcast procedure. |
What to verify before a long recording or live session
- The game is running at the intended resolution, HDR mode and frame rate.
- The overlay opens and the selected hotkeys do not conflict with the game.
- Instant Replay or Manual Record is visibly active when expected.
- The destination drive has enough free space.
- A short test file contains game audio and commentary at usable levels.
- Your player and editor open the selected codec, especially AV1.
- If broadcasting, the current App or streaming application shows the destination and privacy settings you intend to use.
- If using NVIDIA Broadcast, the streaming application has selected Broadcast’s virtual microphone, camera or speaker device.
ShadowPlay is therefore best understood as NVIDIA App’s local capture workflow: Instant Replay for the moment that just happened, Manual Record for a complete session, and optional screenshots or Highlights for other capture jobs. Hardware generation, codec support and App version determine which advertised modes you actually see, while live-streaming controls must be confirmed in the current installation rather than copied from legacy GeForce Experience instructions.
