You can record and edit a complete first song in GarageBand for Mac with only the computer’s built-in microphone, an audio track, and a few region commands. The basic path is: create and save a project, choose an audio input, record a short test and a take, trim or split the recording, arrange the regions, listen from the beginning, and export a listening copy while keeping the editable project.

Apple’s current GarageBand for Mac User Guide shows version 10.4.14 in its version selector. Labels and dialog details can change in later releases, so use the wording visible in your installed version when it differs from the steps below.

What you need for a first GarageBand song

GarageBand is a music-creation studio with audio recording, software instruments, loops, effects, mixing tools, and sharing features. For a first song, you do not need to learn all of those features. A single audio track can hold a voice, acoustic instrument, or another sound recorded through the Mac’s built-in microphone or a microphone connected to the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Mac with GarageBand installed.
  • A new GarageBand project with a descriptive name.
  • An audio track for the sound you want to capture.
  • Either the built-in Mac microphone or a connected microphone or instrument input.
  • A quiet enough place to make the recording intelligible.

Headphones are optional. They can make it easier to hear a metronome or backing track without that sound being picked up by the microphone, but Apple’s setup guidance does not make a particular headphone, audio interface, pop filter, or stand necessary for completing this workflow.

Create and save a GarageBand project

Start with a new project

Open GarageBand and create a new project. Save it immediately with a name that identifies the song, such as First Song – vocal idea. Saving at the start gives you a recoverable editable project before you record anything important.

Leave the default tempo, key, and other project settings alone if you do not already know what you want. The documented beginner workflow does not require a particular genre, tempo, or key. You can change musical settings later, but a first recording is easier to evaluate when you concentrate on getting a clean take.

Add or select an audio track

Choose an audio-track option for a microphone or other real-world sound, or select an existing audio track if the new project already contains one. The track you select is the destination for the recording. Do not leave a software-instrument track selected when you intend to capture your voice or an acoustic instrument.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the track a useful name, such as Lead vocal, Acoustic guitar, or Room idea. Clear names become important once a song contains several takes or backing parts.

Choose an input: built-in microphone or connected microphone

Input path Setup Level control Useful when
Mac built-in microphone No additional microphone or cable; select the Mac input for the audio track. GarageBand can show a record-level control when the device provides that control. You want to begin immediately or make a quick voice, idea, or acoustic-instrument recording.
Connected microphone or instrument Connect the device, make sure the Mac recognizes it, then select it as the track input. The connected device may control the input volume; GarageBand’s record-level slider can be dimmed in that situation. You already own a compatible microphone or input device and want to use it instead of the built-in microphone.

Apple documents both paths but does not establish a universal audio-quality ranking or a particular microphone model. If you buy or borrow an external microphone, verify that its connection and compatibility match your Mac before recording. The built-in-microphone path remains sufficient for this first-song tutorial.

Select the source in Recording Settings

  1. Select the audio track that will capture your performance.
  2. Open the track’s Recording Settings.
  3. Choose the intended input source: the Mac’s built-in microphone or the connected device.
  4. Choose the available input channel. Apple’s recording guidance includes selecting mono or stereo channels where the device offers that choice.
  5. Set the record level so the input is audible without sounding distorted. If the record-level slider is dimmed, adjust the level on the connected device instead.
  6. Turn monitoring on only if you need to hear the live input through your monitoring setup. If monitoring creates distracting feedback or echo, turn it off and use a different listening arrangement.

Make a short test after changing any input setting. A selected device that is not actually receiving sound is easier to diagnose before a full performance than afterward.

Allow microphone access in macOS

On macOS Mojave or later, GarageBand needs permission to access built-in or connected audio inputs. If the track shows no input even though the microphone is connected, check macOS microphone privacy permission before replacing equipment or rebuilding the project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open macOS privacy settings and locate the microphone permission list.
  2. Find GarageBand and allow microphone access.
  3. Quit and reopen GarageBand if macOS or the app requests a restart.
  4. Return to the audio track’s Recording Settings and confirm the intended input source again.

Permission is separate from the track’s input choice. Granting access does not automatically select the right microphone, and selecting a microphone does not grant macOS permission.

Record a test and your first take

Prepare the performance

Place the microphone where it can capture the sound without being bumped. For a voice or acoustic instrument, position yourself consistently so a second take has a similar volume and tone. Keep the project’s transport at the point where you want the recording to begin.

A metronome is optional. Use it when a steady pulse will help you perform in time; leave it off when you are recording a free-time idea. If you are recording an instrument that needs tuning, use GarageBand’s tuner before the take. These tools support the performance but are not required to record audio.

Capture a short test

  1. Select the target audio track.
  2. Click GarageBand’s red Record control.
  3. Perform or speak for several seconds at the level you expect to use for the song.
  4. Stop recording.
  5. Play the test back and check that the expected track contains a region and that the sound is present.

Listen for three practical problems: no signal, unwanted background noise, and audible distortion from an input set too high. These checks are a quick way to decide whether to change the source, level, microphone position, or room before committing to a complete take.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the first complete take

Return the playhead to the intended start point, select the same track, and click Record again. Perform the song from beginning to end. Do not stop for every small mistake; a complete take gives you a region that you can inspect and edit, and you can record another take if the performance cannot be repaired with a simple cut.

When you stop, GarageBand places the captured audio on the selected audio track as a region. Save the project before making edits so the original take remains available in the editable project.

Edit your first recording with regions

GarageBand’s basic editing unit is the region: a visible section of recorded audio on a track. The guide documents moving, resizing, splitting, and joining regions, as well as an Audio Editor for audio-region work. Start with one clear cleanup instead of trying to correct every timing or pitch issue.

Trim silence from the beginning or end

  1. Select the recorded audio region.
  2. Move the pointer to the beginning or ending edge of the region until the trim behavior appears.
  3. Drag the edge inward to remove unwanted lead-in or tail material.
  4. Play from just before the edit and confirm that the first word or note is still intact.

Trimming changes the region’s boundaries; it does not require you to re-record the performance. Leave a little space if cutting exactly at the first waveform movement makes the attack sound abrupt.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Split out an unwanted section

  1. Place the playhead at the point where the unwanted section begins.
  2. Select the audio region and use GarageBand’s Split Region at Playhead command in the editing controls.
  3. Move the playhead to the end of the unwanted section and split again.
  4. Select the isolated middle region and delete it or move it away from the song.
  5. Play across both joins. If the transition is too abrupt, restore the original region or reposition the split.

Splitting is useful for removing a cough, a false start, or a long pause while preserving the surrounding material. Keep the project saved before deleting a section so you can undo or return to the unedited take.

Move and resize a region

Drag a region left or right to place it at the intended point in the arrangement. Resize its boundaries when you need to shorten a section without dividing it. After moving or resizing, start playback before the change rather than from the edit itself; this reveals gaps, overlaps, and timing that can be missed when you audition only the isolated region.

Know the difference between crop and flex pointers

When editing an audio region, the pointer’s position matters. Apple’s support guidance published May 20, 2026 distinguishes the two operations:

  • The flex pointer appears in the upper half of a region and adjusts timing within the audio.
  • The crop pointer appears in the lower half and trims the region’s boundary.

For a first-song cleanup, use the crop pointer for an unwanted beginning or ending. Flex timing is an optional correction for a performance that is otherwise worth keeping; it is not necessary for a successful first recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Audio Editor when the region view is not precise enough

Open GarageBand’s Audio Editor for a closer view of an audio region when you need to place an edit more accurately. The editor is appropriate for inspecting the waveform and making audio-region edits, but it does not turn a rough recording into a different performance automatically. Make one edit, listen, and undo it if the result sounds less natural.

Arrange the song after the first edit

Build a simple order

A first song can be one edited performance. If you recorded separate sections, place the regions in the order you want: for example, an opening, a main section, and an ending. Move regions along the track and resize them so the transitions do not contain accidental silence.

If you record another audio part, create or select another audio track rather than placing unrelated performances on top of the original track. Naming tracks by role makes later listening and level adjustments easier.

Join only when it helps

GarageBand supports joining regions. Joining can make a sequence of adjacent pieces easier to handle, but it is not required for export. Keep separate regions while you are still checking edits; combine them only after the arrangement plays correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Listen through the whole song before exporting

  1. Move the playhead to the beginning of the project.
  2. Play the song all the way through rather than checking only the edited area.
  3. Listen for a missing start, an abrupt split, an unintended gap, a repeated phrase, or a section that ends too early.
  4. Check that the expected audio track is enabled and that the input recording is not accidentally muted.
  5. Stop, make one focused correction, save, and listen again from before the correction.

Keep the first mix simple. GarageBand includes effects and mixing controls, but a first-song walkthrough does not require pitch correction, quantization, flex timing, complex automation, or mastering. Add an effect only when you can describe the problem it solves, and listen to the change in the context of the whole song.

Export a listening copy and keep the editable project

GarageBand’s guide includes exporting a song to disk or iCloud. The exact options shown depend on the current GarageBand interface and the destination you choose, so read the labels in the export dialog rather than assuming a particular format, bitrate, or quality setting.

  1. Save the GarageBand project after your final edit.
  2. Open GarageBand’s current export or share command.
  3. Choose the destination option for saving to disk or to iCloud.
  4. Review the available song settings in the dialog and select the option that matches where you intend to listen or share the file.
  5. Give the exported copy a clear name and complete the export.
  6. Open the exported file outside GarageBand and listen to it from beginning to end.

The project and the exported file serve different purposes. The project preserves tracks, regions, and edits for future changes. The export is a convenient listening copy. Keep both, and do not replace the project with only the exported audio.

Troubleshoot the first recording

Symptom Checks to make
No waveform or silent playback Confirm that the intended audio track is selected, the input source is correct in Recording Settings, the microphone is connected if external, and GarageBand has macOS microphone permission.
The input does not appear Reconnect the device, confirm that the Mac recognizes it, reopen GarageBand if necessary, and select the source again in Recording Settings.
Record-level slider is dimmed Adjust input volume on the connected device because that device may control the recording level.
Recording sounds distorted Lower the input level at the available control, repeat the short test, and keep the microphone position consistent.
Unwanted silence at the start or end Trim the region edge with the crop pointer, then replay from before the edit.
A cough or false start is inside the take Split before and after the unwanted section, remove that middle region, and listen across both joins.
The recording is out of time Record another take with the metronome if a steady pulse helps. Treat flex timing as an optional edit rather than a required first step.
The exported file is not what you expected Save the project, reopen the current export dialog, verify the destination and settings shown there, and audition the exported copy outside GarageBand.

Optional next steps after the first song

  • Record a second take and keep the better complete performance rather than over-editing a weak one.
  • Add a separate track for another vocal or instrument part.
  • Use the metronome during recording when consistent timing matters.
  • Use the tuner before recording an instrument that needs tuning.
  • Explore loops, effects, and mixing after the basic record-edit-export cycle is reliable.
  • Try flex timing or more detailed Audio Editor work only when a specific timing problem justifies it.

The most useful habit is to preserve the project, make small edits, and listen after each change. That keeps the first song understandable and gives you a safe path back when an experiment does not improve the performance.
