Send a short, personal, low-pressure message. Mention what reminded you of your friend, say you would like to catch up, and make it easy for them to reply when they can. For example: “Hi, I was thinking about you when I saw [specific reminder]. I know it’s been a while, but I’d love to catch up if you’re open to it. How have you been?”

You do not need to recreate the old friendship in one conversation. Your first goal is simply to reopen a door while respecting the other person’s choice, timing and boundaries.

Why reconnecting feels awkward—even when you still care

Silence after a long gap can feel like evidence that the friendship has ended, but hesitation is common on both sides. In a seven-study program involving almost 2,500 participants, people often wanted to contact an old friend yet still delayed. The participants were generally thinking of someone they cared about, had contact details for and believed might appreciate hearing from them.

Finding What it means for your decision
90% of participants in the first study had lost touch with someone they still cared about. Losing contact is a widespread experience, not proof that the relationship meant nothing.
70% were neutral or negative about getting back in touch at that moment, even when they felt warmly about the friendship. Feeling reluctant does not necessarily mean you should not reach out; it may reflect uncertainty about how the message will be received.
28% in one study and 37% in another sent a message after saying they wanted to reconnect, had the friend’s contact information and expected the friend would appreciate contact. Wanting to reconnect and actually pressing Send are different decisions. These percentages describe those study conditions, not your personal odds.
About one-third of a control group sent a message, compared with about one-half after a three-minute warm-up messaging current friends and acquaintances. A tiny practice step may make action easier, although it is not a requirement or a guarantee.
A 2025 follow-up analyzed 410 reaching-out notes; their mean length was 44.2 words. Short notes are normal, but 44.2 words is a description of those notes, not a target you must hit.

The most common worries were that the friend would not want to hear from them, that the exchange would be awkward, that the message would bother the person, that there would be nothing to say, or that a full catch-up would take too much time. Those concerns explain why a modest invitation works better than a demand for an immediate explanation of the entire missing period.

“We found that the majority of participants (90 per cent) in our first study had lost touch with someone they still care about. Yet, a significant number (70 per cent) were neutral, or even negative, about the idea of getting back in touch in that moment, even when they felt warmly about the friendship,” said Gillian Sandstrom, professor and researcher at the University of Sussex, in a 2024 Simon Fraser University News account.

First decide whether this is ordinary drift or unresolved harm

The advice in this guide fits a friendship that faded because of distance, changing schedules, work, family responsibilities or simple inaction. It should not be applied automatically to a relationship involving abuse, coercion, stalking, threats, discrimination or repeated violations of your boundaries. In those situations, protecting your safety can matter more than reopening contact.

Situation Safer starting point
Life became busy and neither person kept initiating. Send a warm, uncomplicated invitation and let the friend choose the pace.
You are unsure why contact faded, but there was no specific rupture. Acknowledge the time gap without demanding an explanation.
A specific argument or hurt caused the distance. Name what happened and your part in it before proposing renewed contact.
The relationship felt unsafe or manipulative. You do not owe a reconnection. Consider staying away or seeking support from someone you trust.

Choose one person you would genuinely be glad to hear from. Starting with the person who matters most can create unnecessary pressure; choosing a manageable, positive connection can help you practice the skill without turning it into a test of your worth.

Use a warm-up if pressing Send feels impossible

If you keep drafting and deleting the message, spend a few minutes sending ordinary notes to people you currently know. Ask how a colleague’s project went, share a photo with a sibling or reply to a friend’s recent update. The 2024 intervention used a three-minute warm-up before the old-friend message and found a higher sending rate than scrolling through social media in the comparison condition.

Treat this as an optional activation step, not a ritual. The study does not show that everyone needs practice, nor that a warm-up guarantees a reply. Its practical value is that a small, familiar action can reduce the emotional jump between thinking about contact and making contact.

Choose the channel that gives both of you room

There is no evidence from the cited studies that text, email, a social-media message or a call is universally superior. Use the channel you previously used, or the one most likely to feel natural and non-intrusive now.

Channel Useful when Trade-off
Text message You already texted and still have a current number. Fast and familiar, but a notification can feel demanding if the person is busy.
Email You no longer know whether an old number works, or the friendship was more professional or long-form. Allows a thoughtful note without implying an immediate response.
Direct message You have an active connection on a platform where you already interacted. Convenient, but keep the opening private rather than posting a public call-out.
Phone or video call You know the person likes calls and you already have a reason to expect a conversation. More immediate and emotionally intense; ask first unless spontaneous calls were normal for you.

Send at a reasonable local time when you know it, but do not over-optimize the hour. The content should communicate care without creating a deadline.

Write a first message that is sincere and easy to answer

A useful opening usually contains four parts:

  1. A greeting using their name. It makes the message feel intentional rather than mass-sent.
  2. A specific reminder. Mention a place, hobby, joke, song, class, colleague or other detail that genuinely brought them to mind.
  3. Acknowledgment of the gap. “I know it’s been a while” is enough; you do not need to write a defense brief.
  4. A low-pressure invitation. Say you would enjoy catching up and leave them freedom about whether and when to respond.

The following examples are practical templates, not scripts tested as superior by the studies. A 2025 analysis coded note length, tone, tense, pronouns and questions and found no reliable relationship between those dimensions and whether participants sent their notes. Use wording that sounds like you.

Simple text for an ordinary drift

“Hi Maya, I thought of you when I walked past the café where we used to study. I know it’s been a long time, but I’d love to hear how you’re doing if you’re open to catching up. No pressure—reply whenever you have time.”

Message when you have a concrete update

“Hi Daniel, I finally visited the hiking trail we talked about and it made me think of you. I hope work and family are going well. Would you like to trade updates sometime?”

Email when you are unsure whether the old address still works

Direct message after seeing a current update

“Your photos from the new city popped up today—congratulations on the move. It reminded me how long it has been since we talked. I’d love to catch up if that would be welcome.”

When you want to suggest a specific, small plan

“I’d enjoy catching up. Would a 20-minute call next week suit you, or would messaging be better? If now is not a good time, I completely understand.”

Do not make the first note a long autobiography. A short invitation lets the other person decide whether they want a brief exchange, a call, a meeting or no contact at all. The average note length reported in the follow-up was 44.2 words, but there is no evidence that a particular word count increases success.

Send the message without turning it into a test

  1. Check the recipient. Make sure you are writing to the right account or number and that the message does not include information meant for someone else.
  2. Read for pressure. Remove phrases such as “You never replied,” “You owe me an explanation” or “Answer today.” Replace them with an invitation.
  3. Keep one clear next step. Ask how they are, propose a short call or suggest exchanging updates. Several requests at once make a reply harder.
  4. Send once. A second message sent immediately can make a friendly invitation feel like a demand.
  5. Put your phone down. Decide in advance how you will spend the next hour so you are not repeatedly checking a read receipt.

A no-reply outcome is information about the current situation, not proof that the message was badly written. The studies examined sending behavior, not guaranteed responses, restored closeness or lasting emotional benefits.

What to do when they reply

If the response is enthusiastic

Match their energy without assuming the friendship is instantly back to its old level. Ask one or two questions about their current life, share a concise update of your own and suggest a realistic next step. “Would you like to talk this weekend?” is easier to answer than an open-ended demand to “catch up properly.”

If the response is warm but busy

Make scheduling easy: “No problem. Would sometime next month be better, or should we leave it open?” If they name a time, confirm it. If they do not, let the conversation rest rather than repeatedly proposing dates.

If the response is brief or uncertain

Offer an easy exit: “It’s good to hear from you. I’m glad I reached out, and there’s no pressure to continue if now is not a good time.” Respecting that answer protects both people from a conversation that begins with obligation.

If there is no response

Wait. The right interval depends on your previous communication pattern and the circumstances you know about, but repeated follow-ups over a short period usually add pressure. If you later have a genuinely relevant reason to write, one separate note may be reasonable; do not use multiple check-ins to force an answer.

If they decline contact

Reply once, briefly and respectfully: “Thank you for telling me. I wish you well.” Do not argue with their reasons or recruit mutual friends to persuade them.

If a specific conflict caused the distance

The studies summarized here focused mainly on losing touch without a particular rupture. They do not establish that an apology script repairs conflict or that reconnecting research applies to an estrangement involving harm.

If you were responsible for a clear hurt, name it plainly: “I’ve thought about what happened when I cancelled repeatedly. I understand that it hurt you, and I’m sorry.” Avoid attaching a defense (“but I was busy”) or making the apology conditional on immediate forgiveness. Then ask whether contact would be welcome and allow the other person to decide.

If the other person hurt you, decide what you would need before contact: an acknowledgment, changed behavior, a public setting or no contact at all. Reconnection is not automatically the healthiest outcome.

Build a renewed friendship gradually

One successful message creates an opportunity, not a finished friendship. Sustainable reconnection usually comes from several ordinary interactions:

  • Keep the first conversation proportionate. Share current facts rather than trying to explain every year apart in one sitting.
  • Ask about their present life. Old memories are an opening, but interest in who they are now prevents the relationship from becoming a museum of the past.
  • Offer reciprocal information. Answer your own questions and volunteer a small update so the exchange does not feel like an interview.
  • Make plans that fit real schedules. A short walk, coffee or call is easier to keep than an elaborate reunion.
  • Notice reciprocity. If only one person initiates, replies remain consistently minimal or plans are repeatedly cancelled without alternatives, adjust your expectations.
  • Create a natural next contact. End a good conversation with a specific possibility: “I’ll send you the photo we discussed,” or “Let’s check in after your move.”

Do not insist that the friendship return to its former intensity. People may reconnect warmly while choosing a different frequency, different topics or a different kind of closeness.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Mistake Why it creates friction Better approach
Writing a very long explanation before saying hello. The recipient has to process your anxiety before deciding whether to respond. Lead with the simple invitation; discuss the history only if both of you want to.
Demanding an explanation for the silence. It frames reconnection as an accusation. Acknowledge the gap without assigning blame.
Assuming the friend has the same memories or feelings. Your reminder may not land as expected. Use “I thought of you” rather than “You must remember.”
Sending repeated follow-ups immediately. It removes the recipient’s room to choose. Send once, wait and accept uncertainty.
Using mutual friends as intermediaries. It can make a private decision public and increase pressure. Contact the person directly, or leave the relationship alone.
Treating one reply as proof that everything is restored. Old closeness requires current trust and repeated contact. Let consistency, not one emotional conversation, establish the new pattern.
Applying casual-drift advice to an unsafe relationship. Reopening contact can expose you to renewed harm. Prioritize boundaries, support and safety instead.

What the studies do—and do not—tell you

The 2024 work used experiments and surveys with selected participants, including people who could identify an old friend and, in some studies, believed that person would welcome contact. One experiment found that participants were no more willing to contact an old friend than to talk with a stranger; a brief warm-up was associated with more old-friend messages than a social-media-scrolling control activity. That supports trying a small activation step, not the claim that every hesitant person needs practice.

The 2025 follow-up drew samples from the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, so its results are not a global estimate of communication norms. Its note analysis found no reliable link between coded wording features and sending behavior. That is why the examples above are conveniences rather than magic formulas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Participants who sent a message reported greater immediate happiness than those who did not in the authors’ account. This finding concerns the immediate study context; it does not demonstrate a lasting mood improvement, a reply or a restored friendship. The first step remains modest: make a respectful invitation and allow the other person to choose what happens next.
