Online grooming is the deliberate process of building trust, affection, authority or dependence with a child so an offender can arrange sexual exploitation, obtain sexual images or move the child toward an in-person meeting. It can begin on a game, social network or messaging app, and the person may be a stranger, a supposed peer, a known adult or someone trusted by the family. Look for patterns such as secrecy, unusually intense attention, sexual requests, threats and pressure to meet. A single sign does not prove grooming, but a combination warrants a calm safety conversation and prompt action.

The child is being manipulated; responsibility belongs to the offender. Your first priorities are to keep the child physically safe, preserve evidence, avoid confronting the suspected offender and report suspected exploitation through the appropriate authorities.

What online grooming is and why it is difficult to spot

Grooming is not one message or one awkward interaction. It is a sequence in which an offender creates a relationship that lowers a child’s safeguards and increases the offender’s control. The offender may offer attention, sympathy, status, gifts or money, then introduce secrecy and sexual expectations. A child can feel loyal to, in love with or frightened of the person at the same time.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) calls this activity online enticement when someone communicates with a person believed to be a child through the internet with intent to commit a sexual offense or abduction. It can include sextortion: obtaining or soliciting sexual images and then threatening to expose, harm or shame the child unless the child complies.

Grooming can occur in public game chat before moving to private messages, on social media, in livestream comments, in group chats or through disappearing-message services. An offender might claim to be the child’s age, use another person’s photographs, pose as a mentor or romantic partner, or rely on an existing relationship with the child, family or community. Because the contact may initially feel supportive, children often do not recognize the danger or fear that adults will blame them.

In 2025, NCMEC reported 1.4 million online-enticement reports, more than a 158% increase from 546,333 reports in 2024. More than 80,000 of the 2025 reports involved sextortion. These are reports, not a count of every incident, and they do not show that every report was substantiated. They do show why parents should treat suspicious contact seriously and act early.

Warning patterns to look for

Use patterns and changes in context rather than a checklist that treats one behavior as proof. Ask what the contact is doing, how the child feels and whether the behavior is escalating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secrecy and isolation

  • The contact insists that the relationship stay secret from parents, teachers or friends.
  • They push the child from a public chat to a private channel, encrypted service or disappearing messages.
  • They ask the child to delete conversations, hide notifications or use a second account.
  • They encourage the child to lie about where they are, what they are doing or whom they are meeting.

Secrecy is especially concerning when it is paired with pressure, threats or a request to meet. A child may hide the contact because they are embarrassed or afraid, so secrecy alone is not proof of abuse.

Rapid intensity, gifts and special treatment

  • The person gives unusually intense attention, constant compliments or declarations of love soon after contact begins.
  • They claim the child is more mature or special than other children and present themselves as the only person who understands.
  • They offer game items, phone credit, money, deliveries, gifts or promises of opportunities.
  • They use favors to create a debt, then imply the child owes a reply, photograph, sexual act or meeting.

Generosity can be a tactic for creating dependence. Ask whether the child can refuse without consequences and whether the adult’s behavior would be acceptable if a caregiver could see it.

False identity or claimed authority

  • The contact says they are a peer but avoids live, verifiable communication or gives inconsistent details about age and location.
  • They use another person’s photographs, a heavily edited image or a celebrity’s identity.
  • They claim to be a coach, mentor, recruiter, moderator, counselor or other authority and use that role to demand private access.
  • They cultivate trust with the child’s friends or family to make private contact seem legitimate.

A familiar name, mutual friend or professional-sounding profile does not establish safety. Identity can be fabricated or borrowed, and a real adult can still misuse a position of trust.

Sexualization and requests

  • The person introduces sexual jokes, questions about the child’s body or sexual experience, or role-play that becomes sexual.
  • They request nude, partially nude or sexual images, videos, live calls or recordings.
  • They ask the child to move a camera, undress or perform an act “just between us.”
  • They send sexual material to normalize the conversation or test how the child reacts.

Any adult seeking sexual interaction or sexual images from a child is a serious safeguarding concern, even if the child agreed, initiated a message or said they were an adult online. Children cannot be held responsible for an adult’s exploitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Threats, blackmail and escalating control

  • The person threatens to publish an image, contact the child’s family or school, damage the child’s reputation or harm themselves unless the child complies.
  • They threaten violence, claim to know the child’s address or use personal information to frighten them.
  • They demand additional images, money or a meeting after receiving one image.
  • They become angry when the child delays, blocks them or talks to another adult.

Threats can continue even when the child complies; sending more material does not reliably end sextortion. Treat blackmail as evidence of coercion and report it rather than negotiating with the offender.

Changes in the child’s behavior or device use

  • The child becomes unusually secretive, distressed, withdrawn, irritable or fearful.
  • They protect a phone or account intensely, change screens when approached or stay online late at night.
  • They receive unexplained gifts, money or packages, or show anxiety about notifications.
  • They suddenly delete accounts, stop a favorite game, avoid school or mention an online friend wanting to meet.

These changes can have many causes, including ordinary conflict or mental-health concerns. They become more urgent when they coincide with an unknown contact, sexualized messages, threats or plans to meet.

How to talk with a child without shutting down disclosure

Your first conversation should make it easier for the child to tell you more, not force an immediate confession. Choose a private, calm setting, put the phone aside and speak in a steady voice. If the child is in immediate danger, safety takes precedence over a long conversation.

  1. Open with safety and belief. Say, “You are not in trouble. I am glad you told me, and I will help you.” Avoid an angry reaction that could make the child protect the offender or stop talking.
  2. Use open questions. Ask, “Tell me what happened,” “How did you meet this person?” and “What would help you feel safe right now?” Let the child describe events in their own order.
  3. Clarify immediate risks. Ask whether the person knows the child’s location, has threatened them, has arranged a meeting, is nearby or has access to the child offline. Ask whether any images or money were requested.
  4. Do not blame or interrogate. Do not ask why the child replied, sent an image or kept a secret as though those choices caused the abuse. Coercion and manipulation are central to grooming.
  5. Explain the next steps. Tell the child that you may need help from a platform, police, child-protection service or another trusted professional. Explain what you will do before you do it, unless warning them would create immediate danger.
  6. Keep the conversation ongoing. The FBI recommends open, continuing discussions about online behavior rather than a single lecture. Reassure the child that they can return to you if the person creates a new account or sends another threat.

Do not promise absolute secrecy, threaten to take away every device or demand that the child confront the contact. Those responses can drive the conversation underground and destroy evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when you suspect grooming

1. Check immediate physical safety

If the child may be meeting the contact, the person is on the way, or there is a credible threat of immediate harm, call your local emergency number. Do not send the child to investigate, meet the person yourself or arrange a confrontation. Move the child to a safe location and tell emergency responders what is happening.

2. Preserve evidence before changing the account

Save the information investigators need while avoiding further exposure of the child.

  • Record the account name, user ID, profile URL, display name and platform.
  • Capture message screens, dates, times, threats, requests, payment instructions and meeting details. Include enough surrounding conversation to show context.
  • Note phone numbers, email addresses, linked accounts, delivery addresses and usernames used elsewhere.
  • Keep payment records, gift-card codes, transaction IDs and package information if money or gifts were involved.
  • Write a short chronology while events are fresh, including when the child first met the contact and when the contact moved to private channels.

Do not forward, download or circulate sexual images of a child. Do not send the images to friends, family, the platform or an investigator unless an official reporting process specifically instructs you how to submit them. Tell the reporting service that such material exists and follow its secure instructions. Do not edit original files or delete the account before preserving identifying details; deleting messages can remove evidence and blocking can make a profile harder to locate.

3. Reduce contact safely

After preserving evidence, use the platform’s block and report controls when doing so will not increase danger. A child who is being threatened may need an adult or law-enforcement officer to guide the timing. Do not negotiate, pay, threaten or impersonate the offender. Paying or sending additional material does not guarantee that threats will stop.

4. Secure the child’s accounts

  • Change passwords from a device the offender cannot access, beginning with the email account used for password recovery.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication where available and sign out unknown sessions.
  • Review connected apps, active devices, recovery addresses and phone numbers.
  • Set accounts to private, limit direct messages and remove public location, school, routine and contact details.
  • Review followers, friends, shared albums and cloud links together with the child.

Account security reduces further access; it does not replace reporting or professional support.

Reporting online grooming, enticement and sextortion

Report suspected exploitation even if you are uncertain about the offender’s identity or the child is reluctant. Provide the preserved account details and explain whether there is an immediate physical risk.

United States

NCMEC’s CyberTipline is the centralized U.S. system for suspected online child exploitation. Submit a report at cybertipline.org and contact local law enforcement or the FBI. The FBI advises reporting inappropriate adult contact immediately and notifying the platform. If a child is in immediate danger, call local emergency services first.

United Kingdom

Contact local child-protection services or police. Call 999 when the child is at immediate risk; call 101 when a crime may have been committed but there is no immediate emergency. Under-18s can contact Childline. The Internet Watch Foundation’s Report Remove tool can help eligible under-18s request removal of sexual images of themselves; use the service’s instructions and do not circulate the images.

Privacy, supervision and safer platform habits

Education and supervision lower risk but cannot guarantee that grooming will not occur. The FBI recommends learning which sites, games and apps children use, checking profiles and posts, using privacy settings and agreeing that a child never meets an online contact without a caregiver’s knowledge and supervision.

Set expectations together

  • Agree that adults should not request secrecy, sexual images or private meetings.
  • Make “come and tell me” the rule when someone asks for a secret, gift, image, money or meeting.
  • Explain that a profile photo, mutual friend, verified badge or gaming status does not prove age or identity.
  • Practice blocking, reporting and changing privacy settings before a crisis.
  • Discuss what information must stay private: address, school, daily route, passwords, live location and intimate images.

Use supervision that preserves trust

For younger children, review contacts, friend lists, privacy settings and public posts together on a predictable schedule. For older children, explain what you will check, why you are checking it and how they can regain privacy through safe behavior. Secret surveillance can make disclosure less likely; transparent, age-appropriate supervision keeps the focus on safety.

Apply a firm meeting rule

A child should never meet an online contact alone or without a caregiver’s knowledge and supervision. If a meeting is proposed, do not rely on a video call or a mutual friend as proof of safety. Preserve the invitation, tell the child they are not to go, and contact law enforcement or child-protection professionals when the contact appears sexual, coercive or persistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right response: a practical decision table

Situation Priority Action
Unknown contact asks for secrecy, personal details or a private channel Early prevention Talk calmly with the child, review the account and privacy settings, preserve identifying details, then block or report when safe.
Adult sexualizes conversation or requests an image Suspected exploitation Reassure the child, preserve messages without forwarding sexual images, report to the platform and the appropriate authority.
Threats, blackmail or sextortion are present Urgent safeguarding Do not pay or send more material. Preserve threats and payment details, secure accounts and report promptly.
A meeting is arranged, the offender knows the child’s location or someone is on the way Immediate physical danger Move the child to safety, call emergency services and provide responders with the account and location information.
The child discloses contact but no immediate danger is known Support and investigation Listen without blame, document the chronology, seek professional advice and make the relevant police, child-protection or CyberTipline report.

Common mistakes that can make the situation worse

  • Blaming the child: Saying “You should have known better” can stop disclosure and does not address the offender’s deliberate manipulation.
  • Confronting the offender: Threats can provoke retaliation, prompt deletion of accounts or push the person to contact the child through another identity.
  • Deleting everything immediately: Removing the account before recording usernames, URLs, dates and threats can make identification harder.
  • Forwarding sexual images: Sharing illegal material, even to seek help, increases harm. Use official secure submission instructions instead.
  • Paying or complying: Sextortionists may demand more after receiving money or additional images. Report rather than negotiate.
  • Relying only on monitoring software: Technical controls cannot replace conversations, privacy education, supervision and reporting.
  • Waiting for certainty: You do not need to prove the offender’s identity before seeking help. Report the facts you have and clearly label what is unknown.

Support after a report

Reporting can be frightening for a child, particularly when intimate images or a romanticized relationship are involved. Keep routines as stable as possible, limit repeated questioning and coordinate with investigators or child-protection professionals so the child does not have to retell the story unnecessarily. Consider a qualified child-advocacy or mental-health service experienced in trauma and online exploitation. Ask the platform whether it can preserve records, remove content and prevent the account from contacting the child again.

Continue checking for new accounts, messages or threats without making the child feel watched or punished. Revisit account security after any password reset, device change or suspected account compromise. If the child says the offender is nearby, repeats a threat or proposes another meeting, treat that new information as a fresh safety issue and contact authorities immediately.

Key facts to remember

  1. Grooming is deliberate trust-building that can happen through games, social media, messaging apps or a known person.
  2. Secrecy, gifts, sexual requests, threats and pressure to meet are warning patterns; one sign alone does not prove abuse.
  3. The child is being manipulated and is not responsible for the offender’s conduct.
  4. Preserve account details and messages, avoid confronting the suspected offender and report promptly.
  5. Use emergency services for immediate danger; in the United States use NCMEC’s CyberTipline and law enforcement, and in the United Kingdom use police and child-protection services.
