If a warning tells you to call a number, pay, click a link, install a tool, reveal a password, or paste a Terminal command, stop. Do not follow the instruction until you identify where the warning came from and verify it independently. A frightening message inside a webpage is usually a fraudulent advertisement, while a macOS dialog that appears when opening an application is a different type of security control. Apple’s own threat notifications also exist, but they never request credentials or links by email or phone.

Your safest first response

Ignore the requested action while you assess the alert. Do not call the displayed phone number, click its buttons or links, enter payment details, install the suggested security software, or paste a command supplied by a pop-up, website, message, or chat. Visual Apple logos, urgent countdowns, audio alarms, and a window that fills the screen do not prove authenticity.

  1. Stop interacting. Move the pointer away from the warning and do not provide information.
  2. Identify the location. Is it inside Safari or another browser, in a macOS app-opening dialog, in Terminal, or in an Apple Account notification?
  3. Close or dismiss safely. For a browser page, navigate away or close the tab. If a close control looks suspicious, quit the browser instead of clicking it.
  4. Verify through Apple directly. Open System Settings, Safari settings, or account.apple.com yourself, rather than following a link in the alert.
  5. Recover any exposed account. If you typed an Apple Account password or personal information into a suspected scam page, change the password immediately and confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled.

These steps cover the common situations without assuming that every warning is fake or that every Mac requires a paid antivirus application.

Where the warning appears determines what it means

Use the warning’s location and requested action together. A browser page can imitate Apple’s colors and icons; the branding alone is not evidence.

Fake browser virus alerts and scareware

Apple says that a pop-up warning about viruses or security problems, or offering a free prize, is usually a fraudulent advertisement. Its purpose may be to push damaging software, collect personal information, or obtain payment. A webpage cannot perform a trustworthy Mac security diagnosis merely by displaying a dramatic message in Safari.

Common clues include an unexpected phone number, a demand to act within minutes, a claim that Apple Support has detected infections, a request to install a “cleaner,” or a page that repeatedly opens new tabs. The page may use a familiar logo, but a browser-rendered image is not an Apple system alert.

Close a browser alert without giving it control

  1. Do not click the warning’s “Remove,” “Scan,” “Call,” or even its apparent close button if the control looks unusual.
  2. Use Safari’s normal tab or window controls to leave the page, or quit Safari from the Safari menu.
  3. If Safari keeps restoring the scam page, quit Safari and reopen it while holding the Shift key. Apple documents this as a way to prevent previously open tabs and windows from reopening.
  4. After Safari opens, review its settings for unwanted extensions and pop-up behavior before browsing again.

Apple’s guidance on recognizing scams is available at Apple Support’s social-engineering guidance. It specifically advises not believing a web pop-up that offers a free prize or warns of viruses.

Control pop-ups and fraudulent-site warnings

Safari can block pop-up ads and windows globally or allow them for a particular website. Open Safari’s settings and review the Websites section for Pop-up Windows; remove permissions that you did not intentionally grant. Safari’s Security settings can also warn about fraudulent websites. Menu names and their exact locations vary by macOS release, so use the current labels shown on your Mac.

Keep macOS and Safari updated. Apple notes that updates can include security improvements, so an update is a sensible response to repeated deceptive pages even when no infection is established.

Genuine macOS warnings when opening an app

macOS may warn the first time you open an application downloaded outside the App Store. The dialog can say that the Mac cannot check the app for malicious software. This is a system app-safety prompt, not a webpage demanding an urgent call or payment.

What Gatekeeper is checking

Apple uses code signing and notarization checks to help determine whether software came from an identifiable developer and passed Apple’s automated review. An app that is not signed and notarized can expose the Mac and personal information to malware. A warning does not prove that the app is malicious, but it does mean the source and software deserve verification before opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify before deciding

  1. Confirm the exact app name and developer.
  2. Recall where you obtained it. Prefer the Mac App Store or the developer’s official website reached by typing the address yourself.
  3. Check whether the download was expected and whether its file name and size match the developer’s instructions.
  4. Look for a current developer support page or release information that identifies the same application.
  5. If you cannot establish a trustworthy source, delete the installer instead of opening it.

Do not disable or bypass a security warning simply because a website tells you to. Apple’s Mac User Guide states: “Overriding security settings to open an app is the most common way that a Mac gets infected with malware.” The documented warning and the complete explanation are at Apple’s guide to overriding security settings.

If you intentionally obtained software from a developer you trust and have independently confirmed its identity, make a deliberate decision rather than an automatic one. If the only reason to override the block is an urgent pop-up or an unfamiliar person’s instructions, stop and do not proceed.

Terminal paste warnings: two messages with different implications

Terminal commands can make system changes, delete files, or transmit information. Treat an unsolicited command as code, not as ordinary text.

“Possible malware, Paste blocked”

Apple says this warning can appear when someone who does not regularly use Terminal attempts to paste a command copied from a website, chat agent, messaging app, or email. In the blocked-paste scenario, Apple says, “Your Mac hasn’t been harmed.” That statement applies because macOS prevented the paste; it does not mean a command is safe to run if you later paste it manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the command character by character only if you understand shell syntax, the files it touches, and the account permissions it will use. Otherwise, discard it and obtain help from a trusted technician or the software developer through an independently verified channel.

“Malware Detected, Paste Blocked” or “Malicious Script Blocked”

These stronger messages mean macOS detected known malware in the command or script. Do not paste, type, or execute it. Close the website or conversation that supplied it and remove any related download. Apple’s detailed instructions are at If your Mac blocks a Terminal command paste or script.

Apple Threat Notifications are a separate category

Apple does send genuine targeted-user threat notifications. Do not assume that every message claiming to be from Apple is fake; instead, verify it without using the message’s links or contact details.

Apple says genuine Threat Notifications never ask you to click a link, open an attachment, install an app or configuration profile, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone. Sign in directly at account.apple.com. A genuine notification appears at the top of the account page after sign-in. If you receive one, Apple recommends seeking expert assistance, including the Digital Security Helpline from Access Now. Checking a Mac when pop-ups keep returning

Persistent pop-ups can be associated with adware or other unwanted software, although a single deceptive page does not establish that your Mac is infected.

  1. Update macOS. Install available system updates, then restart.
  2. Inspect Applications. Look for unfamiliar software installed around the time the pop-ups began. If you do not recognize an app, research its developer through an independently typed address before removing it.
  3. Review Safari extensions. In Safari settings, open the Extensions section and uninstall extensions you did not choose or no longer need.
  4. Review website permissions. Remove unexpected pop-up permissions and notification permissions.
  5. Restart normally. Apple says macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when the Mac restarts.

Apple’s overview of malware and these cleanup steps is at What is malware on Mac?. These actions use protections already documented by Apple; they are not a recommendation to purchase a particular antivirus product.

Safer downloading and browsing habits

  • Download apps from the Mac App Store or directly from a developer you trust.
  • Type the developer’s address or use a bookmark you created; do not rely on an unexpected ad or message link.
  • Do not install profiles, extensions, or “security tools” offered by a warning page.
  • Keep macOS, Safari, and installed apps current.
  • Use unique passwords and two-factor authentication for the Apple Account.
  • Expect a genuine macOS app warning to identify an app-opening issue, not to demand a phone call or payment.
  • Keep a current backup so you can recover personal files if an incident damages data.

How to report suspicious messages

Forward suspicious Apple-related email to reportphishing@apple.com. In Messages, use Apple’s built-in junk-reporting option when it is available for the conversation and your region. Reporting details depend on the country and channel. Do not reply to the scammer or use contact information included in the suspicious message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact decision rule

Ask four questions before taking any action:

  1. Is the alert inside a webpage, or is it a macOS dialog attached to opening an app?
  2. Does it ask me to call, pay, click, install, disclose credentials, or paste code?
  3. Was the action expected, and do I know and trust the software’s source?
  4. Can I verify the claim independently in macOS settings or at Apple’s account website?

If the alert fails the source or verification test, stop, close it, and use Apple’s official support pages rather than the instructions it supplies.
