Persistent limping, a stiff or stilted gait, reluctance to jump, reduced activity, pain when a limb or joint is handled, or an unusual limb or tail shape can indicate an inherited or developmental bone disorder in a cat. A breed or pedigree association increases suspicion, but no sign visible at home can prove that a problem is inherited. Injury, infection, immune-mediated disease, cancer and ordinary degenerative arthritis can look similar.
Veterinarians confirm these disorders by combining the cat’s history with an orthopedic and neurologic examination and targeted radiographs. Genetic testing can identify a known variant, such as the dominant TRPV4 variant associated with Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia, but it cannot measure pain or show how severely the joints are affected.
What makes an inherited bone or joint disorder suspicious?
Inherited and developmental disorders arise from abnormal cartilage, bone or joint formation. They may be present from birth but remain unnoticed until a growing cat becomes active, or until secondary arthritis causes pain. Suspicion is strongest when three features occur together:
Recommended Free Tools
- A relevant breed or pedigree: Scottish Fold cats have a well-documented risk of osteochondrodysplasia, while hip dysplasia is reported more often in purebred cats than in domestic cats.
- A persistent movement or posture change: lameness, stiffness, a short-strided or stilted gait, reluctance to jump, reduced play, or difficulty rising is more concerning than a brief episode after vigorous play.
- A structural abnormality: unusually short or thick limbs, splayed toes, swollen distal joints, a thick inflexible tail, or a visibly altered hip or knee region warrants examination.
These clues indicate a need for veterinary assessment, not a diagnosis. A cat can limp because of a torn nail, bite abscess, fracture, soft-tissue injury or infection, and a cat with an inherited disorder may show only subtle behavioral changes.

Signs owners can observe
Lameness and altered gait
A cat may carry one limb, take shorter steps, shift weight between limbs, or walk with a stiff, stilted motion. Cats often hide pain, so a change may appear first as less running, fewer jumps or a preference for sleeping in easily reached places rather than as an obvious limp. Compare movement on different days and note whether the change is worsening, intermittent or present after rest.
Reluctance to jump or climb
Refusing a familiar sofa, window ledge or cat tree can be an early functional sign. Some cats still jump but choose lower surfaces or climb in stages. Record what the cat previously did and what has changed; a single missed jump is not diagnostic.
Pain behaviors
Possible pain behaviors include resisting when the hips, feet or tail are touched, hiding, irritability, reduced grooming, licking or chewing at a painful area, and reduced interaction. Cornell veterinarian Ursula Krotscheck specifically lists limping or difficulty walking, avoidance of physical activity, pain when the hip is touched, and persistent licking or chewing at the hip as signs that can occur with feline hip dysplasia.

Short, thick or immobile tails; shortened or splayed feet; swollen regions around the hocks or wrists; and misshapen toes are particularly important in Scottish Fold cats. Do not force a joint or tail to test flexibility. Manipulation can cause pain and may worsen an injury.
Changes in toileting or breathing
Severe skeletal disease can interfere with the posture needed to urinate or defecate. In advanced Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia, abnormal bones and joint ankylosis can also make breathing difficult. These signs require prompt veterinary attention rather than home observation.

Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia
What the disorder is
Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia is a genetic disorder of cartilage and bone development. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory describes a dominant TRPV4 variant that affects cartilage development and produces the folded-ear phenotype together with distal-limb and tail malformations. Because the variant is dominant, a cat carrying it can express the phenotype; the clinical severity, however, still has to be assessed in the individual cat.
Typical physical and behavioral clues
- A short, thick, inflexible tail that does not move normally.
- Shortened feet, splayed phalanges or swollen distal limbs.
- Lameness, pain, stiffness or a stilted gait.
- Reluctance to jump or reduced activity.
- Progressive difficulty walking, urinating, defecating or breathing in severe cases.
The condition is not limited to cats whose ears visibly fold. Cats Protection notes that risk is not restricted to obviously folded-eared cats, so ear appearance should never be used as a screening test.
Age and progression
Cats Protection reports that radiographic changes may be visible from about seven weeks of age and that limping may begin from four to six months. A retrospective report in the Australian Veterinary Journal described six Scottish Fold cats with skeletal disease, aged from five months to six years, and four additional cats identified through radiographic screening. Those numbers describe the cases in that report; they are not a population prevalence estimate.
What radiographs may show
Merck describes exostoses, skeletal deformation, shortened feet, splayed phalanges, thick inflexible tails and ankylosing polyarthropathy. The Australian Veterinary Journal report recorded irregular tarsal, carpal, metatarsal, metacarpal, phalangeal and caudal-vertebral bones; narrowed joint spaces; progressive new bone around distal joints; and adjacent osteopenia. Secondary arthritis can develop as abnormal surfaces and restricted movement place stress on the joints.
Feline hip dysplasia
How hip dysplasia affects a cat
Hip dysplasia is abnormal development of the hip joint. The joint is loose or poorly formed, allowing abnormal movement that can progress to degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis. Merck describes it as uncommon in domestic cats but more common in purebred cats. The outward signs can range from mild intermittent lameness to substantial difficulty walking.

Signs to watch for
- Limping or difficulty walking, sometimes affecting one hind limb and sometimes both.
- Avoidance of running, jumping or other physical activity.
- Pain or resentment when the hip area is touched.
- Persistent licking or chewing over the hip.
- Stiffness or reduced activity that becomes more noticeable over time.
Weight can influence the mechanical load on an abnormal hip. Cornell’s guidance includes the advice, “Make sure that your cat is not overweight,” and recommends exercise to maintain hip muscles. A veterinarian should determine an appropriate body condition and activity plan, especially if movement is painful.

Why appearance is not enough
A cat’s hips cannot be judged reliably by looking at its walk alone. Some cats compensate well, while others with similar radiographic changes are more painful. Confirmation requires a physical examination and hip radiographs, interpreted in the context of the cat’s age, symptoms and other possible causes.
Other inherited and congenital possibilities
Not every inherited problem has a distinctive appearance or a widely available genetic test. Merck’s owner guidance notes that feline joint disorders can be congenital or developmental, while also listing injury, immune disease, cancer and infection among the differential causes. Hereditary patellar abnormalities and breed-associated skeletal disease are examples of other possibilities.
These conditions can all produce overlapping signs: a limp, stiffness, reluctance to jump or pain on handling. A cat with a normal-looking tail can still have an inherited hip, patellar or limb abnormality, and a cat with an unusual limb shape may have suffered an injury rather than inherited a disorder. The diagnostic process must therefore start with the individual cat, not a breed label.
Inherited disorders compared
| Condition | Age when signs may appear | Breed or pedigree association | Main areas affected | Typical mobility or pain clues | Radiographic patterns | Progression | Disease-specific genetic test |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia | Radiographic signs may be visible from about 7 weeks; limping may begin from 4–6 months according to Cats Protection. The reported case series included cats aged 5 months–6 years. | Strongly associated with the Scottish Fold phenotype; risk is not limited to visibly folded ears. | Distal limbs, paws, toes, tail and multiple peripheral joints; vertebral caudal bones may also be involved. | Lameness, pain, stiff or stilted gait, reluctance to jump; severe disease may affect toileting or breathing. | Exostoses and bone proliferation, misshapen phalanges, irregular tarsal/carpal and metatarsal bones, narrowed joint spaces, periarticular new bone, osteopenia and secondary arthritis. | Can progress to restricted or ankylosed joints and secondary arthritis. | Yes. A laboratory test can identify the dominant TRPV4 variant, but not clinical severity. |
| Feline hip dysplasia | Age of first signs is variable and is not specified in the cited owner guidance. | Uncommon in domestic cats; reported more often in purebred cats. | One or both hip joints. | Limping, difficulty walking, avoidance of activity, pain with hip handling, or licking the hip. | A malformed or loose hip joint with changes associated with degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis. | May progress from laxity and pain to degenerative osteoarthritis. | No disease-specific test is identified in the cited guidance; diagnosis relies on examination and imaging. |
| Other congenital or hereditary joint and skeletal disorders | Variable; often dependent on the particular defect and growth stage. | May be breed-associated or familial, but the association differs by disorder. | May involve the patella, a limb, spine or another joint. | Often overlaps with injury, infection, immune disease and cancer: lameness, stiffness or pain. | Depends on the defect; targeted radiographs are selected after examination. | Variable; some remain stable while others cause progressive joint disease. | Not stated for the broad category; availability depends on the specific disorder. |
How a veterinarian confirms an inherited disorder
1. History and home observations
The veterinarian will ask when the change began, whether it followed an injury, whether it is progressing, and which activities the cat has stopped doing. Bring the cat’s breed or pedigree information, prior medical records and any videos of the gait at home. Note appetite, grooming, litter-box behavior, sleep location, jumping height and whether pain appears after activity or after rest.

2. General, orthopedic and neurologic examination
The examination checks posture, muscle symmetry, joint range of motion, swelling, pain responses, paw placement and spinal or neurologic function. A cat may move differently in the clinic because of fear, so the history and home video are useful. The veterinarian may examine several limbs and joints because compensating for one painful area can overload another.
3. Targeted radiographs
Radiographs are the principal confirmation tool described for Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia and hip dysplasia. They can reveal malformed bones, exostoses, narrowed joint spaces, periarticular new bone, osteopenia, hip laxity or degenerative arthritis. The views obtained depend on the suspected joint and the cat’s ability to remain still; sedation may be discussed when positioning would otherwise be painful or unsafe.
4. Interpreting images with symptoms
An abnormal image does not automatically explain every behavior, and a subtle image does not prove that a cat is comfortable. The veterinarian combines the radiographic pattern with the painful area, functional changes and examination findings. This is especially important for developmental disease, where bone changes can precede obvious lameness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What genetic testing can and cannot tell you
A laboratory test for the known dominant TRPV4 Scottish Fold variant can clarify whether that variant is present. It can support breeding, family-risk or diagnostic discussions, but it does not quantify pain, identify every skeletal abnormality, predict the exact radiographic severity in an individual cat, or replace an examination and radiographs.
For other inherited or congenital disorders, a test may not exist or may not be validated for the cat’s breed. Ask the veterinarian or laboratory what variant is being tested, whether the assay is intended for diagnosis or breeding decisions, and how a result should be interpreted alongside clinical findings. Do not treat a negative result for one variant as proof that the cat has no inherited orthopedic disease.

When to arrange care
Book a veterinary appointment promptly
- Limping or stiffness persists, recurs or is getting worse.
- The cat stops jumping, playing or using stairs normally.
- Handling a hip, limb, paw or tail causes pain or resistance.
- A paw, distal limb or joint looks swollen, shortened or misshapen.
- The tail is unusually short, thick or inflexible.
- The cat repeatedly licks or chews one joint or hip region.
- Activity and grooming decline without an obvious short-lived cause.
Seek urgent assessment
Use urgent veterinary care when mobility is deteriorating rapidly, the cat cannot bear weight, severe pain is evident, or a skeletal problem is accompanied by difficulty urinating, defecating or breathing. Those signs can indicate advanced disease or another emergency and should not be monitored at home while waiting for a routine appointment.
How to prepare for the appointment
- Record normal and abnormal movement. Take short videos of walking, turning, jumping down and using the litter box when the cat is behaving naturally. Avoid provoking a painful movement.
- Write a timeline. Include the first noticed sign, changes in frequency, any fall or fight, and whether the problem affects one side or several limbs.
- List functional changes. Note altered sleeping places, grooming, appetite, play, climbing, litter-box posture and reactions to touch.
- Bring background information. Provide breed, pedigree, age, adoption records, previous radiographs, medications and the health history of related cats if known.
- Ask what the next test answers. Clarify which joint will be imaged, whether sedation is recommended, what the radiographs can show and whether a genetic test would change the assessment.
Common mistakes that delay recognition
Waiting for a dramatic limp
Cats may compensate for pain for a long time. Reduced jumping or a changed gait can be clinically meaningful even when the cat still eats and walks around the house.
Assuming folded ears are the only Scottish Fold clue
The phenotype and associated skeletal disease are not safely screened by ear appearance. Cats Protection specifically cautions that risk is not limited to obviously folded-eared cats.
Blaming every limp on age
Older cats can develop arthritis, but a new limp still deserves an examination. Developmental disease, injury, infection and cancer remain possible at different ages.
Using a home test or supplement as a diagnosis
Home observation can document function but cannot distinguish inherited disease from other causes. Supplements, pain products, ramps and similar conveniences do not establish what is wrong; diagnosis and treatment decisions belong with a veterinarian.
Forcing a painful joint to check flexibility
Do not bend a tail, hip, paw or knee repeatedly to compare sides. A forced movement can hurt the cat and may aggravate an injury. Let the clinician perform the examination.
What happens after confirmation?
The next steps depend on the structure affected, pain level, radiographic severity and the cat’s overall health. A veterinarian may discuss weight control, activity that maintains muscle without provoking pain, environmental adjustments and treatment for arthritis or other complications. Cornell’s advice to maintain a healthy body condition and appropriate exercise is particularly relevant to cats with hip disease, but an individualized plan is necessary when movement is painful.

Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Persistent movement changes plus a relevant breed or pedigree make inherited disease worth investigating, but they do not prove it.
- Scottish Fold osteochondrodysplasia can affect the tail, paws, distal limbs and multiple joints, with radiographic signs sometimes visible in very young kittens.
- Hip dysplasia is a loose, malformed hip that may progress to osteoarthritis; limping, activity avoidance, hip pain and licking over the hip are warning signs.
- Radiographs interpreted with a physical examination are central to confirmation.
- The dominant TRPV4 variant test is useful for variant status, not for measuring pain or functional severity.
- Rapid loss of mobility or difficulty urinating, defecating or breathing requires prompt veterinary care.
