There is no verified 2026 dataset establishing which NFT scams are most common, or ranking them by frequency. The five patterns below are practical risks documented in official guidance and enforcement announcements—not a measured top-five list. They include NFT-specific FBI examples and broader digital-asset guidance from the CFTC, which should not be mistaken for NFT-specific prevalence data.
1. Fake NFT projects and fraudulent mints
Scammers can impersonate a real developer by compromising an account or creating a look-alike profile. They may announce a “surprise” or limited-supply mint to create urgency, then direct people to a spoofed project site that asks them to connect a wallet.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warns that account details such as spelling, screen name, account history, follower count, and creation date can reveal inconsistencies. None is conclusive on its own: a convincing follower count or familiar profile image does not prove an account is authentic. Reach the project’s official page and mint link through channels you verify independently rather than following an unsolicited post.

2. Wallet phishing through fake marketplaces and trades
A fraudulent marketplace or trade page can imitate a legitimate service. The FBI describes a scenario where a victim connects a wallet and executes a trade, allowing a criminal to access wallet assets. A link sent by a supposed buyer or seller is not proof that the trade page is genuine.

- Check the web address carefully, including misspellings and unexpected domains.
- Navigate to the marketplace independently instead of using a direct-message link.
- Do not connect a wallet or execute a trade merely because a counterparty says it is required to complete a sale.
These checks reduce exposure to spoofed links; they do not make every wallet connection or transaction safe. Read what a site or transaction is asking you to authorize before proceeding.
3. Malicious airdrops and “free reward” lures
An unsolicited NFT, airdrop, or reward can be bait for a phishing link. In a June 3, 2025 advisory focused on Hedera non-custodial wallet users, the FBI warned that malicious links may ask people to provide information or connect a wallet, after which criminals can move cryptocurrency. The advisory’s scope is Hedera wallet users; it is not a finding about the frequency of airdrop scams across all NFT platforms.

Treat an unexpected reward as suspicious until you verify it through the provider’s known official channels. Do not use a link embedded in the unsolicited offer to confirm that the offer is real.
4. Pump-and-dump promotion
A pump-and-dump scheme uses hype to attract buyers and push up the price of a little-known asset. Promoters then sell, the price falls, and people who bought later may be left with losses. The CFTC describes this pattern in guidance about digital assets, including promotions spread through social media, messaging apps, and message boards.

That guidance applies to digital assets broadly; it does not establish that pump-and-dump schemes are among the most frequent NFT scams in 2026. The CFTC advises against buying because of social-media tips or sudden price spikes. Treat promised returns, coordinated excitement, and abrupt price moves as warning signs—not evidence that an asset is valuable.

A project can raise money by making claims about how it will use funds and then fail to use them as promised. In an August 5, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said the founder of NFT startup Few and Far had been indicted on securities- and wire-fraud charges. Prosecutors alleged that funds intended for a marketplace were misappropriated.

An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction. The case illustrates why it is worth scrutinizing a project’s claims about its team, plans, and use of funds; it does not show that every delayed, unsuccessful, or abandoned NFT project is fraudulent.

How to check an NFT offer before acting
- Verify the source. Find the project or marketplace through independently confirmed official channels. Check account history and identity details rather than relying on follower counts or urgency.
- Inspect the link and request. Be wary of unsolicited mint, trade, airdrop, and giveaway links that ask you to connect a wallet, provide information, or execute a transaction.
- Research the project and people behind it. Look for clear, supportable claims about who is involved and how funds will be used. Hype or promised returns do not establish legitimacy.
- Pause when the pitch depends on urgency. A limited-time offer, sudden price spike, or social-media tip is a reason to verify independently, not a reason to skip checks.
- Understand what you authorize. Before connecting or signing, review the site and transaction request. A hardware wallet can be an optional way to manage wallet keys, but it does not make phishing, malicious signing, fake projects, or speculative losses safe.
