Long hours do not prove that you are burned out. A more useful question is whether sustained work stress is showing up as persistent exhaustion, growing detachment or cynicism about your job, and a noticeable drop in your sense of professional effectiveness. Those are the three dimensions in the World Health Organization’s ICD-11 description of occupational burnout.
Crunch can create the conditions for that pattern, and game-worker surveys show that overtime and work-life balance are recurring industry concerns. The figures vary by survey, year, sample, and definition, so they describe reported experiences rather than a diagnosis of any individual. This guide helps you reflect on warning signs, separate burnout from other health concerns, document workload problems, talk with a workplace contact when it is safe, and find game-community support.
What burnout means in the workplace
The World Health Organization defines burnout in ICD-11 as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” WHO classifies it as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition, and says the term should be used specifically in a work context.
That definition matters because burnout is not simply being tired after a difficult milestone. It describes a pattern connected to chronic, unsuccessfully managed job stress. A clinician can assess your overall health and consider other explanations; an article or checklist cannot diagnose you.

The three dimensions to notice
- Energy depletion or exhaustion: You feel persistently drained by work, do not recover adequately between shifts or days off, or need substantially more effort to begin ordinary tasks.
- Mental distance, negativism, or cynicism: You feel unusually detached from the project or people, respond with persistent irritability, or have lost the sense that your work matters. Occasional frustration is normal; a sustained change is more concerning.
- Reduced professional efficacy: You feel less capable, productive, creative, or reliable than usual, even when you are working hard. Mistakes, indecision, and difficulty finishing familiar tasks may become more common.
These dimensions are reflection points, not a validated self-test. The sources do not establish a special diagnostic checklist for game developers, and no particular number of weekly hours establishes burnout.
How to tell whether your experience resembles burnout
Look for a persistent pattern rather than one bad sprint. Write down what changed, when it changed, and whether it improves with meaningful rest. Consider these questions privately or with someone you trust:
- Do you remain depleted after sleep, weekends, or time away from the project?
- Has your attitude toward your job shifted from normal deadline pressure to sustained detachment, dread, anger, or cynicism?
- Are you struggling with concentration, memory, communication, or decisions that used to be manageable?
- Do you feel ineffective despite putting in more hours, or are you avoiding tasks because starting feels impossible?
- Have you stopped taking breaks, eating regularly, exercising, socializing, or doing activities that normally restore you?
- Are physical symptoms, sleep disruption, anxiety, low mood, or substance use changing alongside your work stress?
None of these answers confirms burnout. They indicate that your current situation deserves attention. A qualified mental-health or medical professional can help distinguish occupational burnout from depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, medication effects, physical illness, or another problem. You can seek that assessment even if your hours do not look extreme.
Why crunch is relevant in game development
Crunch generally means excessive hours required near a project deadline, often without additional pay. Production schedules, certification, live-service incidents, layoffs, and release delays can all create pressure, but the existence of a deadline does not make unlimited work sustainable or inevitable.
Industry surveys provide context for why long hours deserve scrutiny, while not proving that every studio, discipline, country, or employment arrangement has the same conditions.
| Source and publication | What respondents reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Gameworkers.org Rates and Conditions Survey, reported by IATSE in 2023 | 50% of respondents said they had experienced crunch in the preceding two years. | This is a self-reported result from that survey’s respondents, not a prevalence estimate for all game workers. |
| IGDA and Western University Developer Satisfaction Survey release, May 2, 2024, reporting 2023 results | 28% of respondents said their job involved crunch, compared with 33% in 2021. Many respondents, particularly freelancers, said crunch or long hours were expected as a normal part of the job. | The sample and wording differ from the Gameworkers.org survey, so the percentages should not be combined or treated as a trend line between the two studies. |
| Take This executive summary, 2019 | 53% of surveyed developers said crunch was expected, using that report’s definition of more than 40 hours per week over an extended period. Fewer than 18% reported overtime compensation for hours beyond 40 per week. | These are historical findings with a specific definition and should not be presented as current workforce prevalence. |
The 2023 Gameworkers.org reporting also described pressure to work unpaid overtime, burnout, and exhaustion as widespread concerns among respondents. IATSE’s account said respondents ranked overtime or crunch second among urgent changes after pay; safety and anti-harassment protections, health insurance, and work-life balance were also priorities. That ranking identifies worker concerns, not proof that one policy will solve them.

Take This announced 2025 mental-health survey results in March 2026. Its announcement discussed stressors, coping strategies, existing industry supports, and resources developers want, but it did not provide prevalence figures that establish a new percentage for burnout or crunch.

The figures above use different years, respondent groups, questions, and definitions. One asks about crunch in the preceding two years; another asks whether a respondent’s job involved crunch; the historical report defines crunch as more than 40 hours weekly over an extended period. Freelancers, employees, contractors, remote workers, and workers in different regions may experience very different protections and expectations.
Self-reported survey results also show association, not causation. They cannot prove that a particular schedule caused a person’s symptoms, that every long-hours team has the same risk, or that a studio with fewer reported crunch cases has solved workload problems. Use the numbers to understand industry context, then assess your own symptoms, recovery, and working conditions.
Burnout, ordinary fatigue, and other distress
Short-term fatigue
A demanding launch week can leave you tired and irritable while still allowing recovery after rest and a return to your usual outlook. If your energy and effectiveness rebound when the acute demand ends, the episode may be short-term fatigue rather than the chronic pattern described by WHO.
Burnout-like symptoms with another cause
Persistent exhaustion, low mood, anxiety, sleep problems, panic, physical symptoms, or increasing substance use can occur with several medical and mental-health conditions. Do not assume that labeling everything “burnout” means you only need a vacation. A clinician can evaluate symptoms, medications, sleep, physical health, and safety concerns.

Bullying, discrimination, retaliation, unsafe conditions, or harassment can produce distress independently of hours worked. Document what happened and use an appropriate reporting channel when doing so will not put you at greater risk. Burnout language should not be used to minimize misconduct or shift responsibility from an employer to an individual worker.

A practical self-check before you decide what to do
You can make your situation clearer without turning a journal into a diagnostic score. For one or two weeks, record facts that help you and a professional understand the pattern:
- Record working time: Note start and finish times, weekend work, on-call interruptions, missed breaks, and whether overtime was paid or otherwise compensated.
- Record recovery: Note sleep duration and quality, days off, meals, exercise, social contact, and whether rest actually restores your energy.
- Describe changes: Write specific examples of detachment, irritability, mistakes, reduced creativity, missed deadlines, or difficulty making routine decisions.
- Identify triggers: Mark milestone deadlines, staffing changes, scope changes, incidents, management requests, or conflicts that precede worsening symptoms.
- List support options: Include a primary-care clinician, therapist, employee-assistance service, union or worker organization, trusted colleague, and a personal contact.
Keep records factual and secure. Do not store sensitive health details on a company device or in a shared project channel if you are concerned about privacy.
What to do when the workload is the problem
Prepare a specific request
General statements such as “I cannot do this anymore” may be easy to dismiss. Prepare a short account of the work, its impact, and the change you need. For example: “The current milestone requires 11-hour days and weekend work for the next three weeks. I am sleeping poorly and making more implementation errors. Which feature can move, which deadline can change, or which person can be added?”

Use dates, hours, staffing numbers, missed breaks, and concrete delivery risks. Avoid promising that a single conversation will produce a change; a manager may lack authority, or the schedule may be controlled elsewhere.
Ask about expectations and compensation
Request written clarification of normal hours, on-call duties, deadline assumptions, approval for overtime, and how extra time is compensated. Employment law and contract terms vary by location and status, so seek local legal or union advice for a dispute rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.
Set a boundary you can maintain
State when you are available, what work can be completed within that window, and what must be deprioritized. A boundary is most useful when paired with a decision: “I can complete the bug triage by Friday during my scheduled hours; the new feature needs a later date or another developer.” Do not frame a health crisis as a productivity negotiation if you need medical care.

Escalate safely
If a supervisor ignores the issue, consider a producer or department lead, human-resources or people-operations contact, health-and-safety representative, union, works council, or worker organization. Choose the channel that fits your employment arrangement and local protections. If reporting could trigger retaliation or threaten your safety, consult a confidential adviser first and preserve relevant records outside company systems.
How to evaluate a studio’s support in practice
When choosing a job or assessing a proposed recovery plan, compare the following evidence rather than relying on a wellness slogan:
| Question | What to look for | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Are workloads and deadlines sustainable? | Staffing assumptions, scope-control rules, realistic milestone dates, and a process for moving work. | Repeated “temporary” emergencies with no change to scope, staffing, or schedule. |
| Are overtime expectations clear and compensated? | Written hours, approval procedures, pay or time-off terms, and records workers can access. | Unpaid or implied overtime presented as proof of commitment. |
| Can workers raise safety or harassment concerns? | Independent reporting routes, anti-retaliation commitments, and documented follow-up. | The only route is the person accused, or workers are told complaints will harm the project. |
| Is health coverage accessible? | Actual eligibility, costs, confidentiality, mental-health coverage, and access for contractors or freelancers where applicable. | A benefit is advertised without clear eligibility, affordability, or privacy information. |
| Are work-life boundaries real? | Protected days off, predictable schedules, limits on messages, and leaders who follow the policy. | “Unlimited time off” paired with deadlines that make leave impractical. |
These criteria are comparison tools, not a ranking of named studios. Survey sources identify the concerns; they do not prove which employer policy is most effective.

Take This is a mental-health nonprofit focused on the games community. Its official resources include burnout education, and its workshops have addressed audiences such as studio leaders, designers, and community managers. Workshop material covers recognition, contributing factors, and practical tools; listening sessions are described as educational or supportive, not therapy.
Program schedules change. Take This announced a monthly Take This Talks series running from September through December 2026, including a session titled “Sustainable Design(ers): Managing Burnout for Game Devs.” The announcement said tickets were suggested donations and that no one would be turned away for lack of funds. Workplace and worker networks
Depending on your location and employment status, support may include an employee-assistance service, union, works council, professional association, labor organizer, or trusted peer network. Ask what confidentiality they provide and whether they can advise freelancers, contractors, or people considering a job change.
Immediate safety concerns
If you may harm yourself or someone else, cannot stay safe, or are experiencing a medical emergency, contact local emergency services or a crisis service in your country now, or go to an emergency department. Tell a trusted person what is happening and ask them to stay with you while you obtain help. Workplace burnout advice is not a substitute for urgent care.
What not to rely on
A planner, ergonomic accessory, meditation app, supplement, or other generic wellness product may be personally useful, but no consumer product is established by the cited evidence as a way to diagnose, prevent, or treat occupational burnout. Better individual habits cannot compensate for chronic understaffing, unsafe expectations, unpaid overtime, harassment, or a deadline that has no realistic path to completion.
Likewise, do not use a single survey percentage, a company’s wellness branding, or a personal resilience narrative to decide that your symptoms are either harmless or your fault. Look at the pattern of stress, recovery, health, and workplace conditions together.
A decision path for the next week
- Today: Identify the three symptoms or work conditions causing the most concern. If you are unsafe, seek urgent help rather than waiting.
- Within 48 hours: Protect basic recovery where possible: stop nonessential work, take a real break, eat, sleep, and tell one trusted person what you are experiencing.
- Within one week: Arrange a health appointment or confidential support conversation if symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily functioning.
- At work: Prepare a factual workload request with dates, hours, risks, and one or two workable alternatives. Use a safer escalation route if the first contact cannot act.
- After the immediate crisis: Reassess whether the schedule, staffing, compensation, reporting channels, health access, and boundaries have actually changed. If they have not, consider advice about leave, accommodations, transfer, or a job search.
The aim is not to earn a burnout label. It is to recognize a sustained pattern early enough to obtain care, make the workload visible, and stop a temporary deadline from becoming an unending condition.
