Treat any urgent or unusual message claiming to be from ShinyHunters—or invoking the group—as untrusted until you verify it through a separate, known channel. Don’t click its links, open unexpected attachments, share passwords or MFA codes, approve unfamiliar app access, pay, or reply to an extortion demand. Preserve the message and report it to your organization or platform; the FBI also encourages reporting suspected ShinyHunters intrusions to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) or a local FBI field office.

How to recognize a ShinyHunters phishing attempt

ShinyHunters-associated contact may arrive by email, text message, or phone call. The FBI warns that extortion messages may claim the sender has compromising photographs or videos; that claim is not proof the material exists. Information accessed during an incident may also be used to impersonate people such as school faculty, IT support, or financial-aid staff. A message that includes accurate personal or workplace details can still be fraudulent.

Watch for pressure and requests that bypass normal checks

  • Threats, deadlines, or demands for immediate action.
  • A new or unfamiliar sender, a lookalike address, or a link whose domain does not match the organization it claims to represent.
  • Unexpected attachments or requests to verify personal information, sign in, or provide a password or MFA code.
  • A caller who asks you to change MFA settings, register a device, or act on a login prompt while you are on the phone.
  • A request to authorize an app or connected service you did not seek out, even if it uses familiar branding.

Recognize the reported IT-support and app-authorization tactics

Google Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant described callers impersonating company IT staff, claiming MFA settings were being updated, and directing employees to company-branded credential-harvesting pages. The goal was to obtain single sign-on credentials and MFA codes; in some observed cases, attackers then registered their own devices for MFA. Some domains resembled a company name followed by “sso.com” or “internal.com.” These are examples from observed activity, not a complete list of malicious domains, and the format alone does not prove a site is malicious. Google Cloud’s January 30, 2026 report says the activity it analyzed was not the result of a vulnerability in vendors’ products or infrastructure; that finding should not be generalized to every incident.

Microsoft has also reported voice-phishing campaigns that persuaded users to authorize attacker-controlled OAuth applications in Salesforce tenants, including apps disguised as legitimate Data Loader tools. Familiar vendor names or a polished workflow do not establish that a caller, permission request, or connected app is safe. OAuth consent can grant an app access to account data without handing the attacker your password. Microsoft’s July 13, 2026 report describes this activity and abuse of trusted integrations.

How to verify a suspicious message safely

  1. Stop before acting. Do not use the phone number, reply address, link, or QR code supplied in the message.
  2. Contact the organization independently. Open its official site by typing a known address yourself, or use a number or communication channel you already trust. Ask whether the request is genuine.
  3. Decline unexpected sign-in or permission prompts. Never enter a password or MFA code on a page reached from an unsolicited prompt, and do not approve an unfamiliar app authorization.
  4. Check with your security team if this involves work or school. Use the established help desk or incident-reporting process, not contact details in the suspicious message.

The FBI’s advice is to verify urgent or unusual requests through another communication method before responding. A legitimate-looking sign-in page does not make an unsolicited request safe: an attacker may be harvesting credentials or asking you to grant access to an app.

What to do if you clicked, shared credentials, or approved an app

If you entered a password or MFA code

Contact the account provider or your organization’s security team promptly. Change the affected password and any other password that reused it, then review recent sign-in activity and enrolled MFA devices. Follow the provider’s account-recovery steps if you can no longer sign in. The FBI advises contacting account providers to regain control and changing passwords.

If you approved an unfamiliar OAuth app

Remove the app’s access in the account’s application or security settings, and notify your organization’s security team if it is a work account. A password change alone may not revoke an access token already granted to an app. The FBI’s September 1, 2026 consent-phishing PSA warns that tokens can persist after a password change and recommends immediate app removal as part of remediation.

If you opened a link or attachment but did not enter information

Do not continue interacting with the page or file. Report what happened to your organization’s security team or the relevant service provider and follow their instructions. Keep a note of what you opened and when; do not revisit the link to collect evidence.

Where and how to report it

Report through your workplace, school, or service

Use your organization’s established security or IT reporting process. In email or collaboration apps, use the built-in phishing-report feature when available. Microsoft’s Outlook and Teams guidance explains its reporting options; for other mail clients, Microsoft recommends sending the original email as an attachment to its reporting address. Procedures can vary by platform, so follow the current instructions for the service you use.

Report suspected ShinyHunters intrusions to the FBI

The FBI encourages people to report suspected ShinyHunters intrusions to IC3 or a local FBI field office. Include details you have, such as dates and times, the platform or account involved, what the message asked you to do, and any actions you took. The FBI’s May 15, 2026 public service announcement advises against paying or responding to extortion demands. For an immediate, life-threatening emergency, call 911.

Preserve useful evidence

  • Keep the original message if possible, along with the sender’s address or phone number and the date and time received.
  • Record URLs as text without opening them; save screenshots and note the account, platform, and any steps you took.
  • Do not delete the message before your organization or investigators have had a chance to advise you.

The FBI asks reporters to retain incident information and provide available dates, times, locations, activity details, and organizational contact information. Avoid clicking a suspicious link merely to document it.

Reduce the chance of a successful follow-up attempt

Use phishing-resistant MFA where your organization or account provider supports it. Google Threat Intelligence identifies FIDO2 security keys and passkeys as examples. They can reduce exposure to credential-harvesting pages, but they do not prevent every form of social engineering: still verify unexpected calls, app-consent prompts, or requests to change account settings through a known channel.
