If money has been taken or a payment account may be compromised, contact your bank or payment provider immediately, call 1930, and file a complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Save the transaction details and evidence. Reporting quickly may help authorities and providers respond, but it does not guarantee that money will be recovered.
How do I report cyber fraud in India?
Use the route that matches what happened. If you lost money or a financial account or payment instrument is at risk, notify the relevant provider, call 1930, and submit a victim complaint through the portal. If you have only encountered a suspicious identifier and have not become a victim, use the portal’s separate “Report Suspect” facility.

What should I do if I lost money to an online scam?
- Contact the affected provider immediately. Use a known official app, phone number, or website for your bank, card issuer, wallet, merchant, or payment provider. Ask it to secure or block the affected account or instrument and register your complaint. Do not rely on contact details supplied by the suspected scammer.
- Call 1930 promptly. The Ministry of Home Affairs describes this toll-free helpline as a channel for assistance with lodging online cyber complaints. The portal also instructs victims of cybercrime to report immediately.
- File a victim complaint on the portal. Go to cybercrime.gov.in and select the appropriate cybercrime category. For financial fraud, provide the transaction and incident details requested.
- Keep the records and acknowledgements. Save the portal acknowledgement or complaint reference, your provider’s complaint number, transaction records, and copies of anything you submitted.
These are complementary steps: notifying a provider is not a substitute for reporting to the helpline and portal, and submitting a suspect identifier is not a substitute for a victim complaint.

How do I report a suspicious phone number or website?
If you have not suffered a loss, the portal’s “Report Suspect” facility accepts suspicious website URLs, phone numbers, messaging handles, email IDs, SMS identifiers, and social-media URLs. Submit the identifier and supporting evidence where available. If money was taken or your account was compromised, report the incident as a victim through the main portal or call 1930 as well.

What details do I need to file a cybercrime complaint?
Gather what you can before filing, but do not delay urgent calls to your bank or 1930 while trying to assemble every item. The portal’s complainant checklist and FAQ describe the information and supporting material it may request.
- Incident details: date and time, what happened, and relevant messages or contact details.
- Transaction details for financial fraud: bank, wallet, or merchant name; transaction date; amount; and the 12-digit transaction ID or UTR, if available.
- Supporting evidence: transaction receipts, bank statements, emails, URLs, chat transcripts, screenshots, images, or videos relevant to the incident.
- Complaint records: portal acknowledgement or reference number and the complaint number issued by your bank or provider.
Keep original messages and records where possible, and submit copies or screenshots through official channels. Avoid deleting chats, emails, or transaction notifications that may help explain the sequence of events.

Does reporting cyber fraud guarantee a refund?
No. A complaint starts a reporting and handling process; it does not establish that a transaction will be reversed or that a refund is due. The portal says complaints are handled by the relevant State or Union Territory police authorities based on the information supplied. For unauthorised electronic banking transactions, the Reserve Bank of India’s customer-protection directions make liability depend on the circumstances and how quickly the bank is notified.

Under those directions, for a third-party breach where neither the bank nor the customer is at fault, notification within three working days of receiving transaction communication can qualify for zero liability; notification within four to seven working days is subject to a limited-liability rule; and after seven working days, the bank’s board-approved policy applies. If a customer shared payment credentials, the customer bears the loss until reporting, while losses after the report are borne by the bank under the directions. These rules concern unauthorised electronic banking transactions; they should not be read as a promise that a voluntary payment made to a scammer will be reversed. The applicable outcome depends on the facts and the bank’s current policy.

Why is it important to act quickly?
Prompt notice gives the provider and relevant authorities an opportunity to respond while the incident is recent. RBI directions require banks to maintain channels for reporting unauthorised transactions and to take immediate steps after notification. The government-reported CFCFRMS system outcome was more than ₹11,158 crore saved across more than 32.80 lakh complaints as of 30 June 2026, according to a Ministry of Home Affairs release reported by the Press Information Bureau. That is a system-level figure, not an estimate of what any individual complainant will recover.
For historical context only, the Ministry of Home Affairs reported that the National Crime Records Bureau recorded 175,494 financial-fraud complaints from 30 August 2019 to 30 March 2022. The same release said NCRB did not maintain specific data on how many of those complaints had been disposed of; the figure is not a current complaint total.
