Hang up on an unexpected caller who threatens your Social Security number, benefits, bank account, or freedom. Do not confirm personal details, move money, buy gift cards, or use a phone number or link supplied during the call. Verify any real issue by contacting Social Security independently at 1-800-772-1213, checking your account through the official SSA website, and reporting suspicious contact to the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (SSA OIG).
What a Social Security phone scam looks like
These scams begin with an unexpected call, voicemail, text, email, letter, or social-media message claiming that something is wrong with your Social Security number (SSN), benefits, account, earnings record, or identity. The caller then tries to obtain money, account access, verification codes, or additional personal information.
Scammers may say they work for the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSA OIG, another government agency, a bank, or law enforcement. They can use a real employee’s name, a fabricated badge image, official-looking documents, and a spoofed caller-ID number. Knowledge of some of your personal details is not proof that the contact is genuine.
SSA’s guidance explains that an agency may contact you about legitimate business, but an unsolicited demand for immediate payment, secrecy, or a transfer to “protect” your money is a strong indication of impersonation. The safest response to an unexpected demand is to end the contact and start verification yourself.

Why caller ID and convincing details are not verification
Spoofed numbers
Phone networks can make a call appear to come from a familiar government number or local exchange. A displayed number is only what the caller chose to present; it does not establish where the call originated.
Real names and fake badges
An April 28, 2026 SSA OIG warning described criminals using real SSA employee names and fabricated badge images. A caller can search public records or stolen data before calling, so accurate details about your address, date of birth, or the last digits of an account are not proof of legitimacy.
Attachments and official-looking messages
A scam call may be followed by an email, text, letter, or attachment that repeats the story. Do not open unexpected attachments or follow links from that message. Instead, navigate to the agency’s official website yourself.

Common scripts and the safe response to each one
“Your Social Security number is involved in a crime.”
The caller may claim that drugs, money laundering, or an abandoned vehicle was registered to your SSN and that the number will be suspended. There is no legitimate process in which an unsolicited caller demands payment to prevent an SSN suspension. Say nothing that confirms your identity, hang up, and contact SSA independently.
“Your benefits will stop unless you pay today.”
A criminal may invent an overpayment, account error, or missed update and demand a fine. Do not use a transfer offered by the caller. Check your benefit information through a personally accessed my Social Security account or by calling SSA at its published number.

“Law enforcement is coming unless you pay a fine.”
Threats are designed to make you act before you think. A legitimate government employee will not demand gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, gold, a wire transfer, or a payment-app transaction during an unexpected call to avoid arrest.
“Your bank account is compromised; move the money now.”
In newer schemes, the caller pretends to protect your funds by directing you to a new account. The September 14, 2026 SSA OIG alert says government agencies will not help people transfer money to protect it. Hang up and call your bank using the number printed on your card or statement, not a number provided by the caller.

“Pay us and we can increase your benefits.”
Do not pay for a promised increase or disclose your login credentials. Any question about eligibility or a benefit amount should be handled through SSA’s independently obtained contact channels.
What to do while the call is happening
- Pause. Do not let an urgent tone force a decision. You do not have to solve an alleged government problem during an incoming call.
- Do not confirm information. Avoid saying your full name, SSN, date of birth, address, bank details, passwords, one-time verification codes, or answers to security questions.
- Do not click, download, or transfer. Ignore links, attachments, remote-access requests, payment instructions, and requests to move money.
- End the call. You can simply hang up. Do not stay on the line to argue, and do not accept a transfer to another “department.”
- Preserve useful details. If it is safe, note the displayed number, date and time, claimed agency, name used, payment instructions, and any web or email address. Do not call the displayed number back.
- Tell another person. A trusted relative, caregiver, bank employee, or fraud professional can help you slow down and check the claim.
SSA OIG Inspector General Gail S. Ennis put the core rule plainly in a January 8, 2021 warning: “Don’t believe anyone who calls you unsolicited from a government agency and threatens you—just hang up.” Newer alerts continue to recommend the same basic behavior.
How to verify a real Social Security issue
Call SSA using a number you obtained independently
After hanging up, type the official SSA address into your browser or use a trusted statement or card. The August 31, 2026 SSA OIG alert lists 1-800-772-1213 for calling Social Security directly. Do not use a callback number, extension, link, or transfer supplied during the suspicious call.

Check your account yourself
Reach the my Social Security service through SSA’s official website that you enter independently. Review benefit notices, earnings information, and account activity there. If the account shows no matching issue, that is useful evidence that the incoming claim was fabricated; continue to report the attempted impersonation.

Verify banking claims with your bank
For any statement about a compromised account or a required transfer, call the bank using the number on the physical card, a statement, or the bank’s independently entered official website. Ask whether any account change or transaction is actually pending. Never move funds merely because a caller says the money will be safer elsewhere.
How to report the scam
Report to SSA OIG
Use ssa.gov/scam for SSA’s scam guidance and reporting direction, or submit a report at oig.ssa.gov/report. The OIG form asks about suspicious calls, letters, texts, emails, or other contacts involving an alleged problem with an SSN, account, or payments. Information is voluntary, may be shared as allowed by law, and can support investigations.
Report government impersonation to the FTC
The Federal Trade Commission accepts reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Its September 25, 2026 article, “Is that call from the government…or a scammer?”, reported more than 375,000 government-impersonation reports in 2025 and more than $900 million collectively lost by people who reported those scams. Those figures cover government impersonation generally, not Social Security phone scams alone.
Include actionable details
- The date, time, and method of contact.
- The phone number or caller-ID display, while noting that it may have been spoofed.
- The agency, employee name, badge claim, case number, or script used.
- Any payment method, wallet address, bank account, website, email address, or mailing address supplied.
- Whether you gave information, clicked a link, installed software, or sent money.
Reporting helps agencies identify patterns, but no report guarantees that money will be recovered.

If you shared information or sent money
Stop contact immediately
Do not negotiate with the caller or respond to follow-up messages. Block the number if useful, but remember that scammers can call from different numbers.
Secure accounts and credentials
If you disclosed a password, change it from a clean device and change it anywhere else you reused it. If you gave a verification code, contact the affected service immediately and explain that the code was disclosed to an impersonator. Review email-forwarding rules, recent logins, recovery addresses, and multi-factor authentication settings.
Contact financial institutions
Call your bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or cryptocurrency platform using independently obtained contact details. Explain that the transaction involved an impersonation scam and ask what cancellation, recall, or account-lock options remain. Speed matters, but do not assume a reversal is possible.
Use identity-theft recovery guidance
If you provided your SSN or other identity information, SSA OIG points people to IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps. Follow the site’s current instructions for documenting the incident and protecting affected accounts. Continue watching bank, credit, email, and government-account activity for unfamiliar changes.

Keep voicemails, emails, texts, letters, screenshots, receipts, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, and notes about the conversation. Do not forward malicious links to other people as a warning; share screenshots or the text of the message instead.

Reducing your exposure to future impersonation calls
- Let unknown calls go to voicemail when possible. A legitimate issue can be verified through an official channel.
- Keep your SSA login, email, banking, and phone-account passwords unique and protected by multi-factor authentication.
- Limit public posting of your full birth date, address, phone number, and family details.
- Teach relatives and caregivers that government agencies do not require secrecy or unusual payment methods.
- Store official contact numbers separately from incoming caller information so you can verify without searching under pressure.
- Review bank and account alerts so an unauthorized change is noticed quickly.
Call-blocking and spam-labeling tools may reduce nuisance calls, but no tool can prove that an incoming government-themed call is genuine or guarantee prevention. Independent verification remains the decisive safeguard.
What official guidance does—and does not—establish
SSA and SSA OIG guidance establishes clear behaviors: do not provide information or payment to an unexpected caller, do not move money for someone claiming to protect it, hang up, verify independently, and report the contact. It does not mean every call mentioning Social Security is fraudulent, nor does a suspicious call prove that your SSN was stolen. Treat the contact as unverified until official channels confirm a real matter.
Scam scripts, phone numbers, websites, and agency procedures can change. Before acting on an alert or phone number, check current information on SSA and SSA OIG’s official sites. The August 31, April 28, and September 14, 2026 OIG alerts illustrate how tactics evolve while the core warning signs remain consistent.

- Was the contact unexpected?
- Did it involve an SSN, benefits, an account, identity, arrest, or a legal threat?
- Was immediate payment, secrecy, a verification code, or a money transfer requested?
- Did the caller ask you to use a supplied number, link, attachment, or remote-access tool?
- Did the caller rely on caller ID, a badge image, or a real employee name as proof?
If any answer raises concern, stop the conversation. Hang up, verify through independently obtained SSA or bank contact information, and report what happened.
