ClickFix is a social-engineering and pastejacking scam. A malicious webpage or message invents a browser, CAPTCHA, document, or system problem, then tells you to press a shortcut such as Win+R, paste supplied text, and press Enter. That text can be an obfuscated PowerShell, mshta, or other shell command that downloads malware. A real website should never require you to paste an unknown command into Windows Run, PowerShell, Terminal, or Command Prompt to prove you are human or repair a page.

What ClickFix malware scams are

ClickFix is the name used for a social-engineering technique rather than one specific virus. Attackers create a convincing problem-and-solution story: a page claims that your browser is outdated, a document cannot render, a CAPTCHA failed, a microphone is unavailable, or a security check needs repair. The supposed fix is a sequence of keyboard shortcuts and a command that you are expected to execute yourself.

The attack is also called pastejacking because the dangerous content is placed on your clipboard. The visible instructions may say “Fix It,” “Verify you are human,” or “Copy and paste this code.” What is actually pasted can be a heavily obfuscated PowerShell command, an mshta invocation, or another shell instruction that retrieves a second-stage payload. Because you run the command through a trusted system utility, the attack does not need a browser exploit or a conventional email attachment.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported in 2025 that ClickFix campaigns were reaching thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day. Microsoft observed campaigns beginning in early 2024, including infections involving the Lumma information stealer. The scale is a warning that this is not merely a nuisance seen on obscure websites.

The warning signs to check before you do anything

Any one of these signs is enough reason to stop. Several appearing together are a strong indication of a ClickFix lure.

What you see Why it is suspicious Safe response
An unexpected “Fix It,” “Repair,” or “Verify you are human” button The page is manufacturing an urgent problem instead of using a normal browser control or support flow. Do not click the button or follow its instructions. Close the tab.
Instructions to press Win+R, Win+X, Ctrl+V, or Enter These shortcuts move you from a webpage into a command-execution workflow. Stop before opening Run, a terminal, or any other shell.
A request to paste text into Windows Run, PowerShell, Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or a shell A website is asking you to execute code with your own privileges. Never paste or run it. Close the page.
A fake Chrome, Edge, Facebook, Google Meet, OneDrive, Word, PDF, reCAPTCHA, or blue-screen interface inside the webpage Real operating-system warnings do not appear as arbitrary content embedded in a browser tab. Treat it as webpage content, not a system notification.
Long, encoded, or unfamiliar text on the clipboard Obfuscation can hide a downloader or a command that changes security settings. Do not inspect it by pasting into a shell. Discard it by copying ordinary harmless text instead.
A page says that pressing a key combination is required to continue Legitimate human-verification systems do not need you to execute shell commands. Navigate away and open the service by typing its address yourself if you still need it.

HHS Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HC3) documented campaigns impersonating Chrome, Word, OneDrive, Google Meet, Facebook, PDF viewers, and reCAPTCHA. It recorded an early TA571 campaign that sent more than 100,000 messages beginning in March 2024. Familiar logos, a valid-looking domain, or a page reached through a search result does not make the command safe; legitimate sites can be compromised or imitated.

Why the Win+R-and-paste trick works

The page creates a believable problem

The lure is designed to make an unusual action feel like routine troubleshooting. A fake browser error may claim that a script failed to load. A counterfeit CAPTCHA may say that an additional verification step is required. A document viewer may report that a font or rendering component is missing. In each case, the page supplies the “solution” and pressures you to act before you investigate.

The victim, not the browser, launches the command

On Windows, Win+R opens the Run dialog. If you paste the supplied text and press Enter, Windows executes it according to the command’s contents. Similar lures direct users to PowerShell, Windows Terminal, or Command Prompt. The attacker benefits from the fact that the action comes from a user-approved shell process, so a browser exploit is unnecessary.

The first command fetches the real payload

The pasted text may be encoded or split across several commands to hide its purpose. It can contact an attacker-controlled server, download a script or executable, and launch it. The initial command may leave little obvious evidence in the browser because the malicious activity occurs in a separate trusted process. Security software can still detect it, but detection depends on current protection, logging, and policy controls.

The technique is not limited to one operating system

ClickFix campaigns can adapt their instructions and payloads for multiple operating systems. A Windows Run prompt is the most recognizable example, but the underlying method—socially engineering a person into pasting attacker-provided text into a shell—can be repurposed wherever a user can launch commands. Do not assume that changing from Windows to another desktop platform makes an unexpected terminal instruction trustworthy.

What can happen after execution

Reported payloads include the Lumma Stealer, DCRAT, NetSupport RAT, DarkGate, Vidar, and Latrodectus. The exact malware changes over time, but the potential outcomes are consistent:

  • Credential theft: passwords, authentication tokens, and saved browser credentials can be collected.
  • Session-cookie theft: stolen cookies may let an attacker reuse an already authenticated web session.
  • Data exfiltration: documents and other files can be copied to remote infrastructure.
  • Email-account compromise: a stolen account can be used to read mail, impersonate you, or send more lures.
  • Remote access: remote-administration malware can give an operator interactive control.
  • Security-tool interference: malware may attempt to disable or evade protection.
  • Privilege escalation and lateral movement: an intruder can seek higher privileges and use one compromised device to reach other systems.
  • Ransomware or broader business disruption: access obtained through an initial download can become part of a larger intrusion.

The Center for Internet Security Cyber Threat Intelligence team described ClickFix in 2025 as a social-engineering technique that became prevalent because it can target multiple operating systems for data or financial theft and malware distribution. CIS also reported that ClickFix represented more than a third of all non-malware Albert Network Monitoring and Management alerts in the first half of 2025. These figures describe reported monitoring activity, not a universal infection rate.

What to do when a suspicious prompt appears

  1. Stop at the instruction. Do not press the suggested shortcut, click “Fix It,” or paste anything into a dialog.
  2. Close the tab or message. Use the browser’s tab close control. If a page attempts to trap you in full-screen mode, use the normal browser close or quit command rather than interacting with the page’s controls.
  3. Do not call a phone number or install a support tool. A fake error can add a second social-engineering channel.
  4. Open the service independently. Type the vendor’s known address into a new tab or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not use a link or QR code supplied by the suspicious page.
  5. Update through normal settings. Use your browser’s built-in “About” or update screen, your operating system’s update settings, or the application’s own menu—not a command copied from a webpage.
  6. Report the lure. In a workplace, send the URL or message to your security team using the established reporting route. Preserve the message without clicking its links again.

If you only opened the page and did not execute a command or download a file, the main risk is usually the lure itself. Continue to monitor the device, but do not let that reassurance tempt you to test the command.

How to reduce the chance of a ClickFix infection

For individual users

  • Adopt a firm rule: never paste a command supplied by a webpage, unsolicited message, or unexpected CAPTCHA or repair prompt.
  • Keep your browser, operating system, applications, and extensions updated through their normal update mechanisms.
  • Remove browser extensions you no longer use. An unnecessary extension increases the number of components that can be abused or compromised.
  • Keep real-time antivirus and browser or web protection enabled. Current protection is more useful than a one-time scan performed after an incident.
  • Use a password manager and multifactor authentication so that a stolen password alone is less useful. These controls do not make an executed payload safe, but they can limit account takeover.
  • Separate everyday activity from administrator activity. A standard user account can reduce the impact of some commands, although it cannot make an unknown command acceptable.

Microsoft’s recommended protections for organizations

Microsoft recommends SmartScreen-capable browsers, cloud-delivered protection, network and web protection, and PowerShell script-block logging. Script-block logging gives defenders a record of PowerShell content that might otherwise be difficult to reconstruct after an incident. Logging should be sent to a monitored location with access restricted to defenders.

Additional organizational controls

  • Email and attachment filtering: block or quarantine messages and files associated with known lure patterns.
  • Least privilege: keep users from running with administrative rights when those rights are not required.
  • Application allowlisting: limit which executables, scripts, and interpreters can run on managed devices.
  • Centralized monitoring: send endpoint, browser, PowerShell, and authentication events to a SIEM or equivalent monitoring service.
  • Run and terminal controls: restrict unnecessary access to Run and command interpreters, or display a warning when multiline text is pasted into a terminal.
  • User training: teach the specific shortcut-and-paste pattern. Microsoft summarizes the key behavior as: “Ensure users are aware of what they copy and paste.”

Choosing protection: the capabilities that matter

No single product feature stops every ClickFix campaign. Evaluate security controls against the point in the attack chain where they can help, and distinguish an individually managed device from an organization that needs centralized policy.

Capability What it should cover Why it matters for ClickFix Best fit
Web and phishing blocking Reputation checks, malicious-page detection, and warnings for deceptive sites Can stop the fake CAPTCHA or error page before the user sees the instructions. Individuals and organizations
Real-time and cloud malware detection Behavioral and cloud-assisted detection of downloaded scripts, installers, and payloads Provides a second chance if a user executes the command and a payload arrives. Individuals and organizations
Script, PowerShell, and command-line visibility Logging, policy enforcement, and alerts for suspicious interpreters or encoded commands Shows what happened after a paste and supports investigation. Managed organizational devices
Email and attachment protection Filtering, sandboxing, and URL analysis for incoming messages and files Reduces delivery of the phishing messages that lead users to the lure. Organizations; useful for hosted mail administrators
Centralized logging and policy controls One place to set restrictions, correlate alerts, and retain evidence Helps identify related activity across many endpoints and accounts. Organizations
Fit for the device owner Simple defaults for a personal device or enforceable controls for a managed fleet A technically strong feature is ineffective if nobody can configure or monitor it. Choose according to who administers the device

For a personal computer, prioritize current web protection, real-time antivirus, automatic updates, and account safeguards you will actually keep enabled. For a business, require policy enforcement, script logging, centralized alerts, email filtering, and an incident-response process rather than relying on user caution alone.

If you already clicked “Fix It” or executed the command

Clicking a page button is different from executing the pasted command. If you opened Run or a terminal, pasted the text, and pressed Enter, treat the device as potentially compromised even if no obvious window appeared.

Immediate containment

  1. Disconnect the device from networks if compromise is suspected. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug wired networking, or use your organization’s approved isolation procedure. Do not keep browsing to investigate from the potentially affected machine.
  2. Notify organizational IT or security immediately. Give them the time, URL, message, visible prompt, and what you pressed. Early notification allows containment before credentials or files are taken.
  3. Preserve evidence. Keep relevant alerts, emails, browser history, and screenshots if they can be collected without interacting further with the lure. Do not delete logs or reset the device before responders advise you.
  4. Use a known-clean device to change credentials. Start with email, financial services, password-manager, and administrator accounts. Revoke active sessions or tokens where the service provides that option, and enable multifactor authentication.
  5. Run a full scan with current security software. Update the security tool from a trusted path, then perform its deepest available scan. A clean result is useful evidence but does not prove that stolen credentials or browser cookies were not already copied.
  6. Escalate when the stakes are high. Seek professional incident response if the device held business data, administrator credentials, payment information, remote-access software, or access to other systems.

Do not rely on a single consumer cleanup script. The appropriate response depends on what ran, which accounts were accessible, whether persistence was created, and whether other devices were reached. The authorities documenting ClickFix establish the risks and defensive controls, but they do not publish one universal remediation command that is safe for every victim.

When to treat the incident as an account breach

Assume account exposure when the command ran on a computer used for email, banking, cryptocurrency, business administration, or password storage. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, password-reset messages, new mail-forwarding rules, sent messages you did not write, changed multifactor settings, and new browser sessions. Check these from a clean device and contact the affected service through its official support channel.

Common misconceptions that make ClickFix worse

“It was on a legitimate website, so it must be safe.”

A legitimate domain can host an injected advertisement, a compromised page, or a link that redirects elsewhere. More importantly, a normal website does not need you to run a shell command to complete a CAPTCHA or update a browser.

“The text looked like a verification code, not a program.”

Attackers deliberately make commands look technical or unreadable. Encoding and unusual spacing are reasons to stop, not evidence that the text is harmless.

“My antivirus did not show an alert immediately.”

The command may have performed only an initial download, used a new payload, or acted before a signature was available. Check logs and investigate the execution rather than treating silence as proof of safety.

“I only pasted it; I did not download anything manually.”

Pasting and pressing Enter can itself launch a downloader. The shell, not a visible browser download prompt, may retrieve the next stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A real blue screen or browser warning told me to do it.”

Blue-screen imagery and browser chrome can be drawn inside a webpage. A browser tab cannot turn a webpage instruction into an authentic operating-system diagnostic.

What legitimate verification and updates look like

  • A CAPTCHA or human-verification widget stays within the page and does not ask you to open Run, a terminal, or PowerShell.
  • A browser update is offered through the browser’s own menu or the operating system’s update mechanism, not through a pasted command.
  • A document viewer reports a problem through its normal interface and directs you to the application’s official update channel.
  • A support representative does not ask you to execute an unknown, obfuscated command merely to display a page.

If you are uncertain, stop and reach the service by typing its address yourself. A short delay is safer than granting an unknown webpage the ability to run code.

Frequently asked questions

Is every “verify you are human” prompt a ClickFix scam?

No. Many legitimate verification systems exist, but a prompt becomes unsafe when it asks you to paste supplied text into a shell, use Win+R, or execute a command. Those actions are not a normal requirement for human verification.

Can ClickFix work without administrator permissions?

Yes. Malware can steal data available to the current user without full administrative rights. Administrator access can increase the impact, but its absence is not a reason to execute the command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does closing the tab remove the malware?

Closing an unexecuted lure prevents that page from continuing to instruct you, but it does not undo a command that already ran or revoke credentials that may have been copied. Follow the containment steps if execution occurred.

What information should I give my security team?

Report the approximate time, device name, URL or sender, screenshots, the displayed instructions, shortcuts used, whether text was pasted, and whether Enter was pressed. This lets responders correlate endpoint, email, and authentication records.

Are there reliable victim-count or infection-rate statistics?

No authoritative total establishes how many people have been infected or what percentage of exposed users execute a lure. Published figures describe observed campaigns and monitoring activity, such as Microsoft’s report of thousands of devices targeted daily and HC3’s report of more than 100,000 early TA571 messages.
