An electronic greeting card, or e-card, is a digital greeting that someone selects or creates online and delivers electronically. In a common website-based format, the sender chooses a card and the recipient gets an email with a link to view it.
What is an electronic greeting card?
Dictionary.com defines an e-card as a greeting card chosen from a website by the sender and sent by the site to the recipient in an email containing a link to view the card. The sender may personalize it with a message and photograph. Those are examples of how an e-card can work; not every electronic greeting has to use a website, email link, photograph, or the same delivery method.
The term describes the greeting’s digital form and electronic delivery. An e-card can be selected from an existing design or created online, then viewed on a screen.
How is an e-card different from a paper greeting card?
The key difference is the medium: an e-card is digital, while a conventional greeting card is a physical paper object. Cambridge Dictionary describes a greeting card as a folded piece of thick paper with a picture on the outside and a message inside, written in and sent or given to someone. Its American Dictionary entry describes it as a card containing good wishes, often for an occasion such as a birthday.

What does an e-card usually contain?
An e-card conveys a greeting or good wishes, often for an occasion. Depending on the card, the sender may add a personal message or photograph. The term itself does not mean that a card is animated, free, instant, or tied to a particular app or platform.
When should you call something an e-card?
Use “e-card” or “electronic greeting card” when referring to a digital greeting selected or created online and sent electronically. A paper card remains a greeting card, but it is not an e-card because it is a physical object rather than a digital one.
