There is no dependable “AI detector” for an individual email, text, or call. AI can make an impersonation polished, personal, and convincing, so spelling quality or a familiar voice cannot prove that a message is genuine. The safe method is consistent across channels: pause, inspect the request and contact details, verify through a channel you find independently, and report or secure accounts if you interacted.

What AI-assisted phishing looks like

AI-assisted phishing is an impersonation or social-engineering attempt that uses generative tools to draft messages, imitate a person’s writing, personalize a story, translate text, or clone a voice. The underlying fraud is not new: an attacker still wants money, passwords, authentication codes, access to an account, or an introduction to another target. AI mainly improves speed, scale, and credibility.

The FBI said in its May 15, 2025 alert that “AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify.” That means a cleanly written email, a logo that looks right, or a call with a familiar voice is not authentication. Judge the request and the verification path, not how realistic the content feels.

The four-step decision process for any unexpected contact

  1. Pause. Do not click, reply, open an attachment, transfer money, or disclose a password or one-time code while the contact is still unexpected. Urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip checks.
  2. Inspect. Identify what the person is asking you to do, then examine the complete sender address, phone number, URL, attachment, and conversation context. Look for small changes such as an extra character, a different domain ending, or a number that resembles a known contact.
  3. Verify independently. Use a website address you type yourself, a bookmark you created earlier, the organization’s official app, or a telephone number already stored in your contacts. Do not use the link, number, or contact details supplied by the suspicious message.
  4. Act safely. Report the impersonation, stop responding, and secure any account or payment information you may have exposed. Preserve the original message and transaction details before deleting anything.

Changing from email or SMS to another messaging app does not authenticate anyone. The FBI’s 2025 warning describes impersonators who build rapport by text, move targets to an encrypted app, and then seek access, money, or introductions. Treat the change of channel as another event to verify.

How can I tell if an email was written by AI?

You generally cannot determine authorship reliably from style. AI can produce grammatical, natural-sounding prose, and a human can intentionally write awkwardly. Instead, test whether the request and the sender are legitimate.

Check the complete sender address

Expand the From field and inspect the address, not just the displayed name. An attacker may use a look-alike domain, a substituted letter, an added word, or a free-mail address that has no connection to the claimed organization. Also inspect Reply-To if your mail program shows it; a reply destination that differs unexpectedly deserves independent verification.

Inspect the real link destination

Hover over a link on a computer or press and hold it carefully on a phone to preview the destination without opening it. Compare the actual domain with the organization’s known domain. A familiar brand name in the visible link text is not evidence that the destination is genuine. Do not sign in after following an unsolicited link; open a bookmark or type the known address yourself.

Evaluate the request, not the polish

  • Unexpected requests to verify account information, reset a password, make a payment, or open an attachment require a separate check.
  • Requests for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, payroll changes, credentials, or one-time codes are high-risk, even when the message includes correct personal details.
  • A plausible logo, signature, company footer, or writing style can be copied or generated and does not verify the sender.
  • Pressure to act immediately, keep the request secret, or bypass a normal approval process is a warning sign.

Use a safe email procedure

  1. Do not click the link or open the attachment.
  2. Open the account through a bookmark, the official app, or an address you type manually.
  3. Check for alerts or invoices inside that authenticated account.
  4. If confirmation is still needed, call the organization using a number obtained independently, not one printed in the email.
  5. Report the message through your mail provider and the organization’s abuse or fraud channel.

How can I tell if a text from my bank or another company is real?

Unexpected delivery, toll, payment, bank-alert, tax, or “wrong number” texts commonly use a short story and a link to trigger a quick reaction. The Federal Trade Commission warns that unsolicited texts can prompt a click by claiming a problem that needs immediate resolution.

  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.

Signals that require a pause

  • The text arrives without an action you initiated.
  • It asks you to click a shortened or unfamiliar link, call a new number, or move the conversation to another app.
  • It requests a password, card number, Social Security number, one-time authentication code, or a screenshot.
  • It threatens a fee, suspension, arrest, or missed delivery unless you act immediately.

Verify through the known service

Open the company’s app or type its website address yourself. Review messages, payments, and account alerts there. If a call is necessary, use a number from a statement, the back of a card, or the organization’s independently found website. Do not reply to the text with personal information, and never send a one-time code merely because the sender claims to be support.

A conversation that begins with a harmless “wrong number” or friendly greeting can become an impersonation attempt. Rapport is not proof of identity, and moving to an encrypted messaging application does not make the sender trustworthy.

How do I know if a voice on the phone is AI?

You usually cannot know from sound alone. The FBI warns that cloned voices can sound nearly identical to a known contact. Emotional distress, a familiar speaking style, and apparently personal memories can all be used in an impersonation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat audio artifacts as a verdict

Small glitches, odd pauses, mismatched emotion, robotic pronunciation, or background noise may be clues, but their absence proves nothing. Compression on an ordinary phone call can create similar artifacts, while a well-produced clone may sound natural. Detection tools and watermarks also have limits; the FTC notes that watermarks can be altered or removed and that detection performance must adapt as the technology changes.

Use a callback or second-person check

  1. Say you need to verify and end the call if the request is unexpected.
  2. Call the person back using a number already in your contacts or one you obtained independently.
  3. For a family emergency, contact another trusted relative or use a verification phrase agreed in advance. This is a personal safeguard, not a guarantee.
  4. Do not transfer money, disclose credentials, or provide a verification code during the original call.

If the caller claims to be from a company, use the organization’s known support route. A caller ID display is not sufficient because numbers can be spoofed.

Warning signs that apply across email, text, and voice

Warning sign Why it matters Safe response
Urgency or threats Pressure reduces the time you have to notice an impersonation. Pause and verify through a separate channel.
Money or account-access request These are the outcomes most attackers need. Use a known approval process; never improvise one from the message.
Request for a password or one-time code A legitimate support worker should not need your authentication secret. Refuse and contact the service independently.
New link, phone number, or app Attackers control the supplied route and can intercept your response. Find the route yourself.
Small spelling, address, or URL change Spoofing often relies on a near-match that looks right at a glance. Read the full address and domain.
Unusual secrecy or isolation Keeping you from consulting others protects the attacker. Ask a colleague, family member, or institution to review it.

These are warning signs, not a certification checklist. A message can contain none of them and still be fraudulent, while a genuine message can be poorly formatted or urgent.

Why AI detectors and “human-sounding” tests are unreliable

Text classifiers may flag legitimate writing or miss generated writing, especially after editing or translation. Audio detectors face the same problem as cloning methods improve. The FTC’s April 2024 discussion of AI-enabled voice cloning groups responses into prevention and authentication, real-time detection, and evaluation after creation, but concludes that “there’s still no silver bullet to prevent the harms posed by voice cloning.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a detector, if your organization provides one, as an additional signal for trained reviewers—not as permission to pay, log in, or disclose a code. Identity verification and transaction controls remain necessary when the content appears completely authentic.

What to do if you replied, clicked, or shared information

  1. Stop the interaction. Do not click more links, install software, send additional messages, or negotiate with the impersonator.
  2. Contact the real person or organization. Use an independently obtained number or website and explain what happened.
  3. Change exposed passwords. Go directly to the legitimate site, create a unique password, and change any other account that reused it.
  4. Enable multifactor authentication. Turn it on for email, financial, social, and work accounts, beginning with the account that could reset others.
  5. Respond to a disclosed code or payment immediately. Contact the affected provider or financial institution through its known route and ask what can be blocked, reversed, or monitored.
  6. Report the incident. Report phishing or spoofing to the organization involved and to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) when appropriate.
  7. Preserve evidence. Keep the original email or text, full sender details, phone number, call time, voicemail or audio file, URLs, screenshots, and transaction records. Do not forward a malicious attachment to others; follow the receiving organization’s evidence instructions.

Protect accounts before an impersonation happens

Multifactor authentication reduces the damage from a stolen password, although it does not tell you whether a message or caller is genuine. The FBI specifically warns: “Never provide a two-factor code to anyone over email, SMS/MMS text message or encrypted messaging application.” Enter codes only into the legitimate service you reached independently.

When a hardware security key makes sense

A FIDO2-compatible security key is one possible authentication factor for services that support hardware keys. It can make remote account takeover harder because the key is designed to authenticate the real site, but it does not detect AI-generated content and cannot prove that a caller is genuine.

Before buying one, check:

  • Whether your important services support FIDO2 or another compatible standard.
  • Which connector your devices have and whether NFC is useful for your phone.
  • How you will register a backup key and recover the account if the primary key is lost.
  • Whether your employer or family members can support the enrollment and recovery process.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show

The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2025 report recorded more than 22,000 complaints that reported AI-related information and adjusted losses exceeding $893 million. Those figures cover AI-related complaints broadly, not phishing alone, and they are not a complete measure of prevalence because many incidents are never reported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same report says businesses reported more than $30 million in losses to business-email-compromise scams involving AI in 2025, while victims claimed more than $5 million in losses to distress scams in 2025. These categories have different scopes and should not be added together or described as total AI-phishing losses.

Practical scenarios

“Your account will close today” email

The message uses a familiar logo and asks you to confirm billing through a link. Do not follow it. Inspect the full address, open the service through a bookmark, and check the account there. If no matching alert exists, report the email.

“I changed my number—send the code here” text

The request may be an account-takeover attempt. Do not send the code or continue in the new app. Call the person using the old number or another known route, and contact the service directly if an account is involved.

“I’m in trouble; send money now” family call

A familiar voice and panic are not proof. End the call, contact the family member at a stored number, and ask another trusted person to confirm the situation. Do not transfer money until the identity and emergency are independently verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Executive payment request

Even if the email matches an executive’s style, use the organization’s established approval process and a known phone number. A second-person review can stop a payment that a single employee might approve under pressure.

A compact checklist to keep near your phone

  • Was I expecting this contact?
  • What exactly is being requested?
  • Does the address, number, or URL match the known one character for character?
  • Is there urgency, secrecy, money, a password, or a one-time code?
  • Can I verify it using a bookmark, official app, stored number, or another trusted person?
  • Have I stopped responding and preserved the evidence?

If any answer raises doubt, do not proceed until independent verification succeeds. Real organizations and genuine contacts can tolerate a callback or a normal approval delay; an impersonator depends on preventing one.

The Bottom Line

AI can make phishing emails, texts, and calls sound or look real, and no style clue or detector can reliably certify authenticity. Pause, inspect the full contact details and request, verify through a channel you find independently, and secure and report any account or payment information you exposed.
