Put the stopped Eco-Drive watch where its dial receives strong, indirect-to-direct light, keep it at a moderate temperature, and leave it there long enough for its movement to restart. Direct sunlight is normally fastest, but the required time depends on the watch’s caliber and the light level. Do not charge it at about 60°C (140°F) or hotter. If the second hand still jumps after a full recharge, identify the caliber printed on the case back and use that caliber’s Citizen instructions; some movements require a reset.
These steps apply to Citizen Eco-Drive watches generally, while the detailed charging figures below are specifically for caliber B620. Eco-Drive is a family of movements, not one identical circuit, so a B620 time cannot be promised for every model.
What happens when an Eco-Drive watch stops
Eco-Drive movements convert light into electrical energy and store that energy for later use. Citizen says both natural and artificial light can power an Eco-Drive watch, with sunlight providing the quickest recharge in its basic analog guidance. A watch that has stopped may simply have exhausted its stored energy rather than suffered a component failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCitizen states that a fully charged Eco-Drive can run for more than six months in total darkness. Selected power-save models can last up to seven years, but those are manufacturer claims with model-specific exceptions, not a runtime guarantee for every watch. See Citizen’s explanation of the technology at Citizen’s Eco-Drive support page.

Because the stored energy is replenished gradually, “the hands have started” and “the watch is fully charged” are different conditions. A movement may restart after a short exposure and then stop again if it has not accumulated a useful reserve. Plan the charging session around the full-charge guidance for the caliber, not only the first sign of motion.
Recharge a stopped watch: the safe procedure
- Confirm that the dial can receive light. Remove any box, cloth, sleeve or other cover. The light-sensitive area is under the dial, so exposing only the case back is not an effective substitute.
- Choose a bright, cool location. A sunny window or another bright place is practical. Direct outdoor sunlight is fastest when the watch can remain at a safe temperature. A window-side position is preferable to a hot dashboard.
- Place the watch dial-up. Keep the face unobstructed and position it so the strongest available light reaches the dial. Do not place it against a heater, in a closed car, or anywhere that can approach the temperature warning in the manual.
- Allow enough time for the caliber. A few minutes may not be enough when the storage cell is empty. Use the B620 figures below only if the case-back caliber is B620; otherwise find the correct Citizen manual.
- Check the hand movement without repeatedly moving the watch into darkness. A normally advancing second hand indicates that the movement has started. Some models first show a low-charge warning by moving the second hand at two-second intervals.
- Continue charging after it starts. Starting is not the same as reaching full capacity. Keep charging for the model’s stated full-charge period, or continue regular bright-light exposure if the manual does not provide one.
- Apply a reset only when the caliber’s instructions call for one. If the watch has received an adequate charge but the second hand continues to jump, stop guessing and follow the reset procedure for that movement.
Citizen’s general charging and care information is collected in its Watch Care & Instructions section.
How long charging takes: the B620 example
Citizen’s B620 manual gives approximate times for two different outcomes: enough energy to start normally from a discharged state, and enough energy for a full charge. These numbers are not universal Eco-Drive specifications. They assume the light conditions stated in the manual and apply to caliber B620.
| Light source and condition | Approximate time to start normally from discharged | Approximate time to full charge |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny outdoor light | 50 minutes | 9 hours |
| Cloudy outdoor light | 7 hours | 60 hours |
| 30 W fluorescent lamp at 20 cm | 25 hours | 180 hours |
| Interior lighting at 500 lux | 160 hours | Not stated in the B620 table |
For example, a B620 that has been completely discharged may begin normal operation after roughly 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light, but it could require about nine hours under the same stated condition for a full charge. Under cloudy outdoor light, the corresponding estimates are seven hours to start and 60 hours to full charge. The fluorescent-lamp figures are 25 hours to start and 180 hours to full charge at 20 cm from a 30 W lamp. At 500 lux indoors, the manual estimates 160 hours to start but gives no full-charge time.
Actual results vary with weather, distance from a lamp, the lamp’s output, dial design, age and condition of the movement, and whether the watch was completely empty. Do not convert the B620 table into a promise that every Eco-Drive will restart within 50 minutes.
Choosing between sunlight, cloudy light and indoor light
The practical choice is the light source you can provide for the required time without overheating the case. Sunny outdoor light is the fastest of the B620 examples, but it may be inconvenient to monitor and can create excessive heat behind glass. Cloudy outdoor light is slower but still substantially stronger than ordinary interior lighting. Artificial light works when sunlight is unavailable, although the watch may need many hours or several days.
Distance matters with a lamp. The B620’s fluorescent estimate is measured with a 30-watt lamp 20 centimeters from the watch. That distance and lamp rating are part of the test condition; moving the watch farther away or using a weaker source changes the result. A room described only as “bright” is not a calibrated 500-lux environment, so treat indoor estimates as approximate rather than as a guarantee.
No dedicated solar-watch charger, replacement battery, or repair kit is required for the basic charging step. The watch is designed to use available natural or artificial light. If you have already provided adequate, model-specific exposure, buying another gadget is less useful than identifying the caliber and following Citizen’s support or service instructions.

Use light without overheating the watch
Sunlight is fast, but heat matters
Bright sunlight supplies more energy than typical indoor lighting, yet a watch left on a dark dashboard or behind hot glass can become dangerously hot. The B620 manual cautions against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher. A sunny window with air circulation and a moderate room temperature is a safer everyday choice than a sealed vehicle or a surface heated by the sun.
Artificial light is usable but slower
Fluorescent and other artificial light sources can recharge Eco-Drive watches, but distance and intensity have a large effect. The B620’s 30 W fluorescent estimate is measured at 20 cm; moving the watch substantially farther away reduces the available light. Ordinary room lighting around 500 lux can take many days merely to restart that caliber.
Do not improvise with heat
Raising the temperature does not safely accelerate charging. Do not use an oven, heating pad, lamp that makes the case hot, or a car dashboard. The goal is bright light at a safe temperature, not maximum heat.
What a two-second second hand means
On models that use this warning, a second hand moving once every two seconds indicates insufficient stored energy. Citizen Watch US describes the behavior in the B620 manual as: “When the power reserve becomes low, the second hand moves once every two seconds.” Citizen’s basic analog guidance likewise treats two-second jumps as a signal to recharge.
The warning is not identical on every Eco-Drive model; some watches have different hands, displays or warning behavior. For B620, the manual says that if the watch is left uncharged for eight days or longer after the insufficient-charge warning begins, it will run out of power and stop. That eight-day period is a B620 statement, not a universal countdown for all calibers.
If the hand is jumping, do not assume the movement is broken or that the watch needs an immediate cell replacement. First provide the prescribed light exposure. If the watch is worn under clothing or kept in a dim room, the available energy may be too low to overcome normal consumption, especially after a long period in darkness.
Identify the caliber before choosing a time or reset
Turn the watch over and look for the caliber designation engraved on the case back. It may appear alongside other case and serial markings. Record the characters exactly, including letters and numbers. “Eco-Drive” alone does not identify the charging table or reset sequence.
Use the caliber to locate the matching Citizen manual or support article. Citizen notes that operating needs can differ by caliber, and multifunction watches generally require the instructions for their specific movement. The support article “My Eco Drive watch is not keeping time” explains why caliber-specific guidance matters.

Write down the caliber before beginning a long charging session. This prevents a common mistake: applying the B620 table or a reset sequence to a visually similar watch with a different movement. If the engraving is difficult to read, photograph the case back in good light or ask Citizen support or a service provider to identify it rather than guessing.
If the watch starts but the second hand still jumps
First give the watch a genuinely adequate charge for its movement and lighting conditions. A brief appearance of normal movement does not prove that the storage cell is full. Once it has had the required charging time, observe the second hand again.
If it still moves in two-second jumps, Citizen says a reset may be required on some movements. Reset operations are not interchangeable: basic analog models and multifunction models can use different controls and sequences. Citizen’s article “I have recharged my watch but the second hand still jumps” provides procedures for certain basic models and directs multifunction-watch owners to the relevant manual.

- Confirm the caliber from the case back.
- Open the Citizen manual or support instructions for that caliber and watch type.
- Follow the stated reset sequence exactly, including any crown position, button timing or hand-position requirement described there.
- After the reset, set the time and any other functions as the manual requires.
- Recharge again if the manual specifies a post-reset charging period.
Do not perform a reset sequence copied from a different Citizen model. A wrong sequence can leave the hands or functions out of synchronization and makes diagnosis harder.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The watch is completely stopped
Place it dial-up in bright light and allow a movement-appropriate charging period. If the caliber is B620, the manual’s approximate restart times range from 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light to 160 hours under 500-lux interior light. If you do not know the caliber, do not use those figures as a guarantee; identify it first.
The second hand moves every two seconds
Treat this as a low-charge warning on models that support it. Keep charging rather than wearing the watch in ordinary indoor conditions, which may provide too little energy. For B620, leaving the warning unaddressed for eight days or longer can lead to complete stoppage.
The watch runs briefly, then stops again
It may have received only enough energy to start, not enough for a full reserve. Continue charging according to the caliber’s full-charge guidance. For B620, the difference is substantial: approximately nine hours in sunny outdoor light versus 50 minutes to start, or 60 hours in cloudy outdoor light versus seven hours to start.

The watch does not respond at all
Verify that the dial has been uncovered, the light is genuinely bright, and the watch has not been exposed to excessive heat. Then use the caliber’s manual. If adequate model-specific charging produces no response, arrange professional service. A stopped watch by itself is not enough evidence to identify the cause.
The watch keeps losing time after recovery
Check whether the movement is still showing a low-charge indication and whether it received the full charging period, rather than only the restart period. Then consult the caliber’s instructions for timekeeping or reset procedures. If it repeatedly loses operation despite adequate light and the documented steps, Citizen support or a qualified service provider should diagnose it.
Maintenance after recovery
Give the watch regular bright-light exposure
For B620, Citizen recommends direct sunlight for five to six hours at least once a month for optimal performance. This is a maintenance recommendation, not a universal instruction that a fully stopped watch will recover in five or six hours. Other calibers can specify different practices.
Avoid storing it permanently in darkness
A drawer, closed box or sleeve prevents the dial from receiving the light that replenishes the stored energy. If the watch is not being worn, store it where the dial can receive safe ambient light without exposing it to high temperatures.
Use the manual for unusual displays or functions
Chronographs, perpetual calendars, alarms and other multifunction designs can have separate power-saving indicators and reset requirements. Their instructions take precedence over generic analog advice.
Distinguish regular upkeep from recovery
The five-to-six-hour monthly sunlight recommendation in the B620 manual is intended to maintain performance during ordinary use. It should not be used to judge a watch that has been completely empty, because a discharged movement may need the longer restart and full-charge periods shown in the table. Keep those two situations separate when planning exposure.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the case-back side as the light target: the dial is the surface that should face the light.
- Stopping at the first movement: restart time is shorter than full-charge time.
- Assuming every Eco-Drive is a B620: the figures and warnings are caliber-specific examples.
- Charging on a hot dashboard: Citizen cautions against about 60°C (140°F) or higher.
- Resetting by memory: use the exact sequence for the identified caliber and watch type.
- Diagnosing an internal failure too early: adequate charging and the correct reset must be tried before a service diagnosis can be made.
Quick decision checklist
- Dial uncovered and facing the light.
- Bright location selected without excessive heat.
- Caliber read from the case back.
- Charging time taken from the matching manual, not from a different model.
- Two-second movement treated as a low-charge warning where that feature exists.
- Reset attempted only with the correct caliber instructions.
- Citizen support or qualified service contacted if charging and the documented reset do not restore normal operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recharge a stopped Citizen Eco-Drive indoors?
Yes. Citizen says artificial light can power Eco-Drive watches, but it is usually slower than sunlight. For caliber B620, the manual estimates 25 hours to start under a 30 W fluorescent lamp at 20 cm and 160 hours under 500-lux interior lighting.
How long should I leave a stopped B620 in sunlight?
Citizen’s B620 table estimates about 50 minutes in sunny outdoor light to start normally from discharged and about nine hours for a full charge. Weather, exposure and temperature affect the result.
Is five or six hours enough to recover any Eco-Drive?
No universal recovery time exists. Five to six hours of direct sunlight is a B620 monthly maintenance recommendation, not a guarantee for a fully stopped watch or for another caliber.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the second hand move twice at a time?
On models with this feature, two-second jumps indicate insufficient stored energy. Keep charging. The exact warning behavior varies by caliber; for B620, leaving the warning unaddressed for eight days or longer can lead to stoppage.
Can I put the watch on a car dashboard to charge faster?
No. A dashboard or hot window can raise the watch toward the B620 manual’s caution level of about 60°C (140°F). Use bright light in a moderate-temperature location instead.
What should I do if it still jumps after charging?
Identify the caliber on the case back, confirm that the model received its full charging period, and follow the reset procedure in that caliber’s Citizen manual. Basic and multifunction watches can use different procedures.
Do I need a special charger or replacement battery?
Not for the basic charging step. Eco-Drive is designed to recharge from natural or artificial light. If correct charging and the documented reset fail, seek Citizen support or qualified service rather than buying an unverified device or part.

What if I cannot find the caliber number?
Do not guess from the watch’s appearance. Photograph or carefully record the case-back markings and ask Citizen support or a qualified watch service provider to identify the movement and matching instructions.
The Bottom Line
Expose the dial to bright light at a safe temperature, allow the full caliber-specific charging time, and treat two-second jumps as a low-charge warning on models that use it. Identify the case-back caliber before applying any reset. If proper charging and the matching Citizen reset instructions do not restore normal operation, seek a professional diagnosis.
