You can receive money from India in Nepal through the UPI–NPI peer-to-peer (P2P) remittance link if both people use participating banks or payment apps. The recipient normally shares an eligible Nepali mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA), completes a one-time cross-border consent prompt, and then checks the linked Nepal account or app for the credit. The sender checks the transfer status and history in the Indian UPI app.
The service went live on 6 June 2026. It is an account-to-account remittance service, not the separate UPI QR facility used for purchases at participating Nepali merchants. Availability, limits, fees and app screens vary by institution, so confirm the current instructions with both providers before sending.
What the India–Nepal UPI remittance service does
Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) connects Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI) with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for cross-border person-to-person transfers. Participating Indian banks and non-bank payment apps can send funds to eligible recipients in Nepal through participating Nepali banks and payment apps. NCHL describes the service as real-time and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Do not confuse remittances with UPI QR purchases
This guide concerns a person in India sending money to a person in Nepal. It is not a guide to paying a shop by scanning a UPI QR code. The QR arrangement for merchant purchases is a separate person-to-merchant service and does not determine whether your personal Nepal account can receive a remittance.
Who can receive money in Nepal?
Receiving is limited to institutions and apps enabled for the UPI–NPI service. Having an ordinary Nepal bank account, a mobile wallet, or a UPI-capable app does not automatically make that account eligible.
NCHL’s current participating list identifies these Nepal-side institutions and services:
| Institution or app | Current direction shown by NCHL |
|---|---|
| Everest Bank Ltd. | Participating; confirm the current receiving workflow with the bank |
| Global IME Bank Ltd. | Participating; confirm the current receiving workflow with the bank |
| Himalayan Bank Ltd. | Receiving only |
| Machhapuchchhre Bank Ltd. | Participating; confirm the current receiving workflow with the bank |
| Nabil Bank Ltd. | Participating; confirm the current receiving workflow with the bank |
| Nepal SBI Bank Ltd. | Participating; confirm the current receiving workflow with the bank |
| NMB Bank Ltd. | Receiving only |
| connectIPS | Participating service; confirm the eligible account and app procedure |
NCHL says additional institutions may be added. Treat the list as a starting point rather than a guarantee for every account, branch, app version or transfer direction. Ask the recipient’s bank or payment provider whether the specific account can receive an India-origin UPI transfer before the sender authorizes one.
What the recipient must give the sender
Use the identifier supplied for this service
NCHL says the sender can address the payment with the recipient’s mobile number or VPA. The recipient should ask the Nepal institution which of those identifiers is enabled and the exact format to use. Do not replace it with a normal bank account number, an unrelated wallet username or a different phone number just because that information is available.

Check every digit and character. A payment sent to the wrong eligible identifier may require a formal complaint and may not be reversible through the recipient’s app.
Complete one-time cross-border consent
NCHL states that both sender and recipient must provide one-time consent for cross-border transfers. The recipient may see a consent request in the bank or payment app, or may be told by the institution how to register consent. There is no single recipient-side menu sequence documented for every Nepal provider, so follow the instructions displayed by your institution rather than assuming that another bank’s steps apply.

- Open the participating Nepal bank or payment app through its official login process.
- Look for a cross-border, UPI–NPI, remittance or consent request if the provider directs you to do so.
- Review the displayed name and identifier before accepting.
- Complete any authentication the institution requires, such as an app passcode, device verification or one-time password.
- Tell the sender only the identifier that the institution confirms is active for inbound UPI–NPI transfers.
How to receive a transfer: step-by-step
- Confirm eligibility. Contact the Nepal bank or payment provider and ask whether your particular account can receive an India-to-Nepal UPI–NPI P2P remittance. Check the current NCHL participant information as well, because participation can change.
- Confirm the destination identifier. Obtain the mobile number or VPA that the provider has enabled for this service. Make sure the SIM, account profile and app registration use the same details where the provider requires that match.
- Give consent once. Complete the provider’s cross-border consent process. If no prompt appears, ask support whether consent must be enabled in the app, through internet banking or by another documented method.
- Give the sender the exact identifier. Send it through a trusted channel and avoid posting it publicly. Explain that the sender must select the payee details shown by the Indian app before approving.
- Ask the sender to verify the payee. The sender should check the displayed recipient name or other confirmation details and stop if they do not match you.
- Wait for the transfer result. NCHL describes the service as real-time, but a real-time design does not remove the possibility of a bank, app, network, compliance or account exception.
- Check your Nepal account or app. Look for an actual credited balance and the incoming transaction entry. Do not treat a sender screenshot, a pending status or an SMS without a corresponding account credit as final proof.
- Save the reference. Ask the sender to retain the transaction reference or receipt. Keep the amount, date, approximate time and the identifier used; support teams may request these details.
Transfer limit, fees and timing
India-to-Nepal limit
NCHL’s current service page lists a maximum of INR 200,000 per transaction for transfers from India to Nepal and shows no monthly cap for that direction. This is a published service figure, not a promise that every Indian bank or app will permit the maximum. The sender’s institution may apply its own risk, account or regulatory controls. Verify the limit immediately before sending because cross-border limits can change.
Fees
For an India-to-Nepal transfer, NCHL tells senders to check the applicable charge with the respective Indian bank or payment app. The NCHL page separately shows a NPR 240 flat fee for the opposite Nepal-to-India direction. That NPR 240 figure must not be used as the inbound India-to-Nepal fee.
Have the sender review the final confirmation screen for the amount, exchange-rate information if shown, and any fee before entering the UPI authorization. If the fee is unclear, stop and ask the Indian provider; do not infer it from a Nepal-side tariff.

Timing
NCHL describes the linkage as real-time and 24×7. A transfer can still remain pending or fail because of maintenance, a limit check, incorrect recipient details, an unavailable account, authentication trouble or an issue at either institution. “Real-time” describes the intended service operation, not a Nepal-specific service-level guarantee for every transaction.
How the sender checks whether the money reached Nepal
- Open the Indian UPI app used to send the payment. Use the app’s transaction history, activity or payments section. Exact labels differ among banks and non-bank providers.
- Open the individual transaction. Check whether it is marked successful, pending, failed, reversed or another status defined by that provider.
- Read the transaction details. Confirm the recipient identifier, amount, date and time, and copy the transaction reference or receipt number.
- Do not rely on a debit alone. A debit from the sender’s account does not by itself prove that the Nepal account has been credited. Ask the recipient to verify the incoming entry and available balance.
- Use the app’s support or grievance option when needed. NPCI’s general UPI FAQ says users can check history and raise a grievance through a participating bank’s UPI app. The wording and route are provider-specific.
NPCI’s general guidance says that if confirmation has not arrived within one hour, the customer should contact the bank’s customer support. This is general UPI guidance, not a guaranteed resolution time for the India–Nepal corridor.
How the Nepal recipient checks for the credit
- Sign in to the participating Nepal bank or payment app that is registered for receiving.
- Open the account balance and transaction history, not only notifications.
- Search around the sender’s stated date, time and amount for an inbound remittance entry.
- Confirm that the credited account is the one linked to the identifier shared with the sender.
- Save or note the incoming transaction details if the app provides a reference.
NCHL documents an instant confirmation notification for its successfully processed Nepal-to-India flow, but it does not specify one universal notification or status-screen behavior for India-to-Nepal recipients. Your provider may show a push notification, SMS, inbox message or only an account entry. The account credit is the decisive check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the transfer is missing, pending or incorrect
If the sender sees “pending”
- Do not send a second payment just because the first one is not yet visible.
- Record the transaction reference, amount, date and time, and the recipient identifier.
- Check whether the app provides a refresh, status-detail or support option.
- Contact the Indian sending bank or app if the status remains unresolved, especially after the general one-hour confirmation point mentioned in NPCI’s UPI guidance.
- Ask the Nepal recipient to check the account directly while the sender’s case is open.
If the sender sees “successful” but the Nepal account is not credited
- Compare the identifier in the sender’s receipt with the identifier the recipient supplied.
- Ask the recipient’s institution to search using the reference, amount, date and time rather than relying only on a notification search.
- Have the sender open a complaint with the sending bank or app and provide the same information.
- Do not assume that a successful sender status means the recipient can spend the funds; wait for the destination account entry or a formal provider confirmation.
If the sender sees “failed” or “reversed”
Follow the sending institution’s instructions for the debit and return of funds. Keep the receipt and check the sender’s account for the reversal instead of attempting repeated transfers immediately. The recipient should confirm that no credit was posted before a new attempt.
If the wrong mobile number or VPA was used
Contact the sending bank or app promptly and report the transaction as an incorrect recipient or disputed transfer. Give the reference and all requested identity details. The recipient should also notify the Nepal institution if a credit appears that does not belong to them. Do not try to resolve a mistaken payment by asking an unknown person to send money back outside the institution’s process.

If consent or eligibility is the problem
Ask the Nepal provider to confirm that the account is enabled for inbound UPI–NPI transfers and that the one-time cross-border consent was completed. A standard domestic transfer profile or a merchant-QR registration may not satisfy the remittance requirement.
What information support teams will need
Prepare a concise case record before calling either institution:
- Sender’s name and Indian bank or payment app
- Recipient’s name and Nepal bank or payment app
- Mobile number or VPA used as the destination
- Amount and currency shown by the sending app
- Date and approximate time, including the time zone if requested
- Transaction reference, receipt number or screenshot from the official app
- The exact status shown: pending, successful, failed, reversed or another label
- Whether the sender’s account was debited and whether the Nepal account shows any credit
Share sensitive information only through the institution’s official support channel. Never disclose a UPI PIN, app passcode, password or one-time authentication code to a caller or chat agent.
NCHL support contacts
NCHL lists these support numbers for the service:
- +977-1-5970065
- 9820555306
- 5355306
- NTC toll-free: 16600155306
- Ncell toll-free: 18102555306
For a transaction-specific investigation, contact both the Indian sending institution and the Nepal receiving institution first. NCHL support can be useful when the participating providers cannot explain the cross-border processing or when the issue concerns the linkage itself.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Nepal account can receive UPI. Participation is institution- and direction-specific.
- Sharing a regular account number without checking. NCHL identifies a mobile number or VPA for addressing the transfer; the provider must tell you which identifier is valid.
- Skipping consent. Both sender and recipient have a one-time cross-border consent requirement.
- Using the merchant QR process. A QR payment at a shop is not the same as a P2P remittance to your account.
- Applying the NPR 240 fee to an inbound payment. NCHL lists that amount for Nepal-to-India transfers, not India-to-Nepal receipts.
- Trusting a screenshot as proof of credit. Verify the destination account’s transaction history and balance.
- Repeating a transfer while the first is pending. Wait for the provider’s status or support decision to reduce the risk of duplicate payments.
- Using old instructions. Participant lists, limits, fees and app menus can change; confirm them before each significant transfer.
Practical checklist before the sender presses Pay
- The Nepal institution confirms that the recipient’s account is enabled for inbound UPI–NPI transfers.
- The recipient has completed the required one-time cross-border consent.
- The recipient has supplied the exact active mobile number or VPA, with no transcription errors.
- The sender’s Indian bank or payment app supports the corridor.
- The sender has checked the payee details displayed by the app.
- The amount is within the current INR 200,000-per-transaction ceiling shown by NCHL and within any lower limit imposed by the sender’s institution.
- The sender has reviewed the current fee and final amount on the confirmation screen.
- Both people know how to retrieve the transaction reference and where to check status.
What is established—and what varies by provider
The linkage, P2P purpose, mobile-number or VPA addressing, one-time consent, published participant list, INR 200,000 India-to-Nepal transaction ceiling, real-time/24×7 description and NCHL support contacts are documented by NCHL and the launch notices. The 6 June 2026 launch date is reported by India’s Press Information Bureau.
The exact recipient enrollment screen, the name of every status tab, the inbound fee, notification format, exchange-rate presentation and the time at which a provider escalates a case are not universal in the available service descriptions. Those details must come from the participating Indian bank, payment app or Nepal institution handling the transaction. Check the provider’s current instructions again whenever the app, account or transfer amount changes.
