Rebuild a deck in the format that governs your event, remove every Forbidden card from all three deck areas, then replace the card’s strategic job rather than trying to copy its name or printed text. For the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Advanced Format list effective September 21, 2026, a Forbidden card cannot appear in the Main Deck, Extra Deck, or Side Deck. A Limited card is allowed at one copy and a Semi-Limited card at two copies across those areas.
Start with the exact list and format
Yu-Gi-Oh! legality is date- and format-specific. This guide uses the TCG Advanced Format Forbidden & Limited List effective September 21, 2026. TCG, OCG, Speed Duel, Master Duel and special-event rules can use different lists, so a deck legal for one environment may be illegal in another. Confirm the list named in the event information before changing cards.
Konami’s rule wording is unambiguous: “Cards that are ‘Forbidden’ cannot be used in your Main Deck, Extra Deck, or Side Deck.” The restriction is not merely “do not draw the card.” You cannot keep a Forbidden card in a Side Deck for a matchup, in the Extra Deck as an occasional line, or in a larger collection of cards from which you choose at the table.

| Forbidden | 0 | Remove every copy from all three deck areas. |
| Limited | 1 total copy | Count copies across the Main, Extra and Side Decks; reduce the total to one. |
| Semi-Limited | 2 total copies | Reduce the total to two or fewer. |
| Unlimited | Up to the normal deck-construction maximum | Use the ordinary copy limit and any other card-specific rules. |
The September 21 update newly lists Archlord Kristya, K9-04 Noroi, Kewl Tune Rotary and Wind-Up Hunter as Forbidden. It also continues to list established Forbidden cards such as Maxx “C”, Tearlaments Kitkallos and Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess. These are examples, not a complete list; search each card in the current official database instead of relying on memory or an old deck profile.

Freeze your deck list before changing it
Make a dated copy of the deck exactly as it was played. Include the Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck, and write “TCG Advanced Format — effective September 21, 2026” in the notes. A dated snapshot lets you see which change solved a legality problem and which change altered the deck’s strategy.
- Export or write every card name and quantity. Include cards that are normally kept in a side-plan folder or an Extra Deck package.
- Search every name in Konami’s official database. Check the status for the format and effective date that govern your event. Do not trust an app’s cached list, an old tournament video or a deck profile uploaded before the update.
- Remove Forbidden cards completely. Do not leave one copy “for testing,” because that copy still makes the submitted deck illegal.
- Reduce Limited and Semi-Limited cards. Count copies across all three deck areas, not just the Main Deck. One Limited copy in the Main Deck plus another in the Side Deck is still two copies and is not legal.
- Save the legal baseline. Test changes from this clean list so you can return to a known-legal version if an experiment fails.
If an event uses a special list, use that list even when it differs from the September 21 TCG update. The event announcement is the controlling document for that tournament.
Identify what the lost card actually did
The best substitute is the card that preserves the deck’s function at the point where the old card was used. Start by assigning the Forbidden card one primary job. A card can have secondary uses, but naming the job prevents you from filling an important slot with a card that merely looks similar.
| Job | Question to ask | Replacement priority |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Can this card begin the deck’s normal line by itself? | Find another legal one-card starter before adding situational tech. |
| Extender | Can it continue a line after another card has started it? | Prefer an extender that is live in the same hand and zone states. |
| Searcher | Did it find a named engine card, spell, trap or material? | Preserve access to the missing piece, even if the searcher has different stats. |
| Board breaker | Did it answer an established board when going second? | Compare the replacement’s targets, timing and resource cost. |
| Hand trap or interruption | Did it interact from hand or during the opponent’s turn? | Match the type of interaction and the matchups you need to cover. |
| Floodgate | Did it constrain a game mechanic or set of cards? | Check whether your own engine also depended on that restriction. |
| Graveyard enabler | Did it send, banish, recover or trigger cards in the Graveyard? | Verify that the substitute creates the same condition before your line needs it. |
| Extra Deck payoff or bridge | Did it convert specific materials into the next step or final threat? | Find a legal bridge with compatible materials, zones and summon requirements. |
| Consistency card | Did it increase the number of playable opening hands? | Recalculate starter and access-card counts rather than judging by card power alone. |
Matching the Forbidden card’s Type, Attribute, Level or artwork is secondary. A substitute with different printed characteristics can be correct if it performs the needed job without breaking the rest of the line. Conversely, a card with nearly identical text can be unusable if it cannot be summoned, searched or activated in your deck.
Rebuild opening-hand ratios before adding tech
Record the deck’s structure before and after the ban. Separate one-card starters, two-card starters, extenders, interaction and non-engine cards. This exposes the real loss: a Forbidden consistency card may remove several playable hands even when the final combo still exists, while a Forbidden payoff may leave your opening frequency unchanged but weaken the end board.

If the banned card was a starter
Add a legal starter or a reliable searcher first. A hand trap or board breaker does not restore a hand that cannot begin the engine. Count how many opening cards can reach the first meaningful action, and distinguish cards that work alone from cards that require another specific card.
If the banned card was an extender
Test the replacement after common opening interruptions, not only in an unopposed goldfish. An extender that works only when your first effect resolves may look powerful but fail in the situations where the old card kept the line alive. Note whether it requires a monster in a particular zone, a card in the Graveyard, or a specific Attribute or Level.

Do not automatically insert another powerful Extra Deck card. Rewrite the route that reaches the end board. The replacement must be summonable with the materials your revised line produces and must answer the threats for which the original payoff was included. If the new board has a different weakness, reserve Side Deck slots for that weakness rather than copying the old plan.
If the banned card was non-engine interaction
Choose interaction according to the matchups you expect. A replacement that is excellent going first may be dead when you must break an established board, and a going-second card may reduce the number of hands that can execute your own line. Keep a written count of engine and non-engine slots while testing.
Trace engine dependencies and the first three turns
A replacement can be legal and individually strong yet incompatible with the deck. Before committing to it, trace what happens from the opening hand through the first three turns of a realistic game. Check each dependency below.

- Attribute: Does a summon, search or lock require the original Attribute?
- Level or Rank: Does the replacement still make the Synchro, Xyz or other Extra Deck step you need?
- Type: Will Type-based searches, summons or material requirements still work?
- Zones: Does the card need to begin in the hand, reach the Graveyard, occupy a specific field zone or be banished?
- Timing: Is its effect usable at the point your line reaches it, or only before the opportunity has passed?
- Cost: Can you pay the discard, tribute, banish or life-point cost without removing the resource needed for follow-up?
- Searchability: Can your existing cards find it, or does adding it create a second package of cards that must also be drawn?
- Locks and restrictions: Does its effect restrict summons, Attributes, Types or zones before your remaining Extra Deck plays?
Write the line as a sequence of actual actions rather than a slogan such as “make the same board.” Mark where the old card appeared, what material it supplied, which effect it enabled and what resource remained afterward. A substitute that reaches the same end monsters but consumes the follow-up card may be worse over several turns than a less explosive option.

When two or more cards can fill the slot, score them against the same criteria. This avoids choosing the card with the flashiest effect while overlooking a higher failure rate.
| Comparison axis | What to measure in testing |
|---|---|
| Cards needed to access it | Is it a one-card access point, a two-card combination or a card that must be searched? |
| Starter versus extender role | Can it begin a line, or is it useful only after another effect succeeds? |
| Interruption vulnerability | Which common opposing interaction stops it, and can the deck play through that interruption? |
| Resource cost and follow-up | What cards, zones or once-per-turn effects are consumed, and what remains for the next turn? |
| Extra Deck compatibility | Does it preserve the materials, Levels, Types, Attributes and zones required by your Extra Deck? |
| Going-first value | Does it build or protect the board you need when you win the opening roll? |
| Going-second value | Can it function through an established board and help you convert an advantage? |
| Legality and availability | Is it legal for the exact format and date, and can you obtain the needed copies before the event? |
Use a simple record for each candidate: opening hand, intended line, opponent interruption, stopping point, final interaction, cards left in hand and next-turn follow-up. The record is more useful than a single successful combo demonstration.
Rebuild the Extra Deck and Side Deck as one plan
Extra Deck bridges
If the Forbidden card was an Extra Deck bridge, begin with its materials. Identify every legal card that can be summoned using the same practical materials, then check whether that card leads to the next engine step. A replacement that requires an additional Level, Type or zone may force several Main Deck changes; count those changes as part of its cost.
Do not preserve an Extra Deck slot merely because it was in the old list. If the new line no longer reaches a former payoff, replace the entire package with cards the revised engine can summon. Keep enough flexible options for games in which the opponent interrupts the intended route.

Side Deck changes
The new line may lose to different threats. For example, changing a graveyard-dependent route can increase exposure to graveyard hate, while replacing a broad interruption with a narrow one can leave a particular opposing strategy unanswered. Rebuild the Side Deck from the matchups your revised deck actually loses to; do not copy the previous fifteen cards automatically.
Check legality after sideboarding as well. A Limited card in the Main Deck cannot be supplemented with additional copies in the Side Deck beyond its total permitted count.
Test the rebuilt list at the intended date
- Goldfish opening hands. Draw representative hands and classify each as a playable starter, a hand requiring two specific cards, interaction without an engine, or a dead hand. Record where the replacement stops the line.
- Play going first. Test whether the revised deck still produces meaningful interaction and retains follow-up after paying its costs.
- Play going second. Start against established boards and test whether the replacement contributes to breaking them rather than functioning only in an empty field.
- Use representative current decks. Include the strategies you expect at the event and the interruptions most likely to be used against your line.
- Log failures, not just wins. Record dead draws, hands that end at the substitute, lost Extra Deck routes, and boards that no longer answer the threats you designed for.
- Recheck the list before submitting. Konami can publish another effective date; update the legality audit whenever a new list takes effect.
Testing should answer a concrete decision: which candidate gives the highest number of functional hands while preserving interaction and follow-up? If every candidate changes the deck’s identity, it may be better to reduce the affected engine and allocate those slots to a different legal plan than to force the old combo.

| Format and effective date | TCG Advanced Format — September 21, 2026, or the exact event list. |
| Removed card | Card name and copies removed from Main, Extra and Side. |
| Primary job | Starter, extender, searcher, breaker, interruption, floodgate, graveyard enabler, Extra Deck bridge or consistency card. |
| Old line position | The action, material or search the card supplied. |
| Candidate replacement | Legal card and number of copies. |
| Dependencies | Attribute, Level, Type, zone, timing, cost, searchability and locks. |
| Going-first result | Board, interaction and follow-up after realistic interruption. |
| Going-second result | Ability to answer an established board and convert resources. |
| Extra Deck impact | Bridges retained, replaced or no longer summonable. |
| Side Deck impact | New matchup weaknesses and cards needed to cover them. |
| Final legality check | Every Main, Extra and Side card verified for the event’s list. |
What to remember about Forbidden, Limited and Semi-Limited cards
- A Forbidden card is removed entirely from Main, Extra and Side Deck construction.
- A Limited card allows one copy total across those deck areas.
- A Semi-Limited card allows two copies total across those deck areas.
- The September 21, 2026 date applies to the cited TCG Advanced Format list; other formats and special events may differ.
- The strongest replacement preserves the lost card’s strategic role and the deck’s opening ratios before it tries to imitate the original card.
Once the legality audit, role analysis, dependency check and interrupted-game testing all agree, save the rebuilt list with its effective date. That record makes the next list change faster and keeps the deck legal when a familiar card moves from Limited to Forbidden or a new event uses a different ruleset.
