You do not need to reimage a server just to install Claude Code. Reimaging reinstalls the operating system and can erase data; Claude Code is a separate command-line application you install afterward on a supported host. First decide whether you actually need a clean operating system, then identify whether your server is managed through a cloud provider or is a physical machine you control.

Decide whether a reimage is necessary

Anthropic’s Claude Code setup instructions describe installing the application on a development machine; they do not make reinstalling the operating system a prerequisite. If the server is otherwise working, install Claude Code directly. For an installation error, start with Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance rather than treating a full rebuild as the default fix.

A reimage may make sense if you deliberately want a clean host, need to recover an operating system that no longer works, or have a separate security or maintenance reason to reinstall. It is a destructive recovery choice, not an installation step for Claude Code.

Identify how your server is installed

Server type Who controls the reinstall What to verify
Cloud server Your hosting provider’s account panel or documented management tools Available OS images, what the redeploy erases, what backups or snapshots include, and whether IP addresses or attached storage persist. These details vary by provider.
Physical machine You, using the machine’s boot process and installation media Hardware compatibility, the correct OS image, boot settings, and which disks or partitions the installer will change.

Do not use a generic “reimage” command or assume another provider’s instructions apply. Cloud redeploy procedures are provider-specific. For a physical Ubuntu installation, Ubuntu’s installation guidance covers using bootable USB or DVD media.

As one provider-specific example, one.com says redeploying its Cloud Server removes data, software, and configuration, while its documentation says public IP addresses remain. That behavior is not a general rule for other cloud providers.

Back up and plan recovery before rebuilding

Assume the operating system reinstall could remove anything on the affected disks unless the provider or installer documentation explicitly confirms otherwise. Ubuntu advises backing up before installation and warns that partitioning can cause data loss. one.com’s redeploy guidance likewise warns that its operation permanently deletes server data, software, and configuration.

  • Repositories, uncommitted changes, deployment files, and other project data.
  • Service definitions, scheduled jobs, environment configuration, and application settings.
  • SSH access, firewall rules, DNS records, and any other network configuration you will need to restore.
  • Credentials, keys, and tokens, handled through a secure storage and recovery process rather than copied into an exposed backup.
  • Provider snapshots or backups: confirm what they cover, how to restore them, and whether they include attached storage and configuration. Do not assume a snapshot captures everything.

Reinstall the operating system using the matching instructions

For a cloud server

Use the selected provider’s current redeploy or reinstall procedure. Check the target OS image and the confirmation screen carefully before committing: the provider may replace the existing system disk or remove other data. Confirm separately what happens to attached volumes, public addresses, firewall settings, and backups; these are provider-specific details.

For a physical machine

Follow the current installation guide for the operating system and hardware. Ubuntu’s server installation instructions describe booting from local installation media such as a USB drive or DVD. Review the disk and partition choices before confirming installation, because changing partitions can destroy existing data.

Do not treat Ubuntu Core’s recovery “install” mode as a universal Ubuntu Server reinstall command. Canonical documents that mode as removing existing user and system data for Ubuntu Core; its scope is that product and recovery path.

Prepare the rebuilt host for Claude Code

After the OS is running, confirm that the server meets the requirements in Anthropic’s current setup documentation before installing. The retrieved setup page lists macOS 10.15 or later, Ubuntu 20.04 or later or Debian 10 or later, and Windows 10 or later using WSL 1, WSL 2, or Git for Windows; it also lists at least 4 GB of RAM, Node.js 18 or later, and internet access. Requirements and installation methods can change, so check Anthropic’s live setup instructions rather than treating this list as timeless.

  • Check the OS release and available memory.
  • Confirm the shell and required runtime are available and compatible.
  • Verify DNS resolution and outbound network access.
  • Confirm which login or enterprise provider your account is provisioned to use.
  • Restore only the configuration and credentials needed for the server’s intended role.

Install and verify Claude Code

Anthropic’s setup page documents a global npm installation. In a shell with a supported Node.js installation, the documented command is:

npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

Anthropic explicitly warns not to run sudo npm install -g. If the install fails because of permissions, fix the Node/npm installation or its global package configuration rather than escalating the command with sudo.

  1. Run the installation command in the account and shell where you intend to use Claude Code.
  2. Open a new shell if the command is not found, then check that the executable is on your PATH.
  3. Run claude doctor to inspect the installation, as Anthropic’s setup instructions recommend.
  4. Launch claude and complete the authentication flow appropriate to your account or organization.

The retrieved setup page also describes a native binary installer as alpha. Do not assume that method is stable or preferred; check Anthropic’s current instructions for its status and supported installation options.

Restore authentication and network access

A fresh operating system does not automatically restore credentials or organization settings. Anthropic lists Claude Console with active billing, Claude Pro or Max, and enterprise platforms such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI as authentication or provider paths. Use the option your account or organization has provisioned; they are not interchangeable assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For environments that route traffic through a corporate proxy, Anthropic documents support for the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables. Its documentation says Claude Code does not currently support NO_PROXY or SOCKS proxies and lists api.anthropic.com, statsig.anthropic.com, and sentry.io as network destinations to allow. Your organization’s policy and an enterprise provider’s requirements may add or change network rules.

Troubleshoot before considering another rebuild

Anthropic’s Help Center troubleshooting guidance, published April 15, 2026, includes cases such as “command not found” after installation and an unsupported Node.js version. These symptoms point to installation, runtime, shell, or configuration issues; they do not by themselves show that the operating system needs to be reimaged.

  • claude is not found: open a fresh shell and check whether npm’s global executable directory is on PATH.
  • Node.js is unsupported: verify the installed version against Anthropic’s current requirements and correct the runtime before reinstalling the package.
  • Installation reports permissions errors: avoid sudo npm install -g; correct the Node/npm setup for the intended user.
  • Login or requests fail on a managed network: check proxy variables, required allowlists, and whether the organization uses an enterprise provider.
  • Remote login does not complete: use Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance for remote SSH callback issues rather than wiping the server without diagnosing the connection.
