Use a written target allocation, set a maximum AI or single-company weight, and move toward it with new contributions, dividends, and tax-deferred account trades before selling appreciated shares in a taxable account. When taxable sales are necessary, choose lots deliberately, distinguish short-term from long-term gains, estimate federal and state taxes, harvest suitable losses, and avoid wash sales. If you are charitably inclined, donating appreciated securities can reduce a concentrated position without first selling it, subject to Section 170 limits and documentation.
This is a planning framework for a U.S. investor, not individualized tax advice. Filing status, state, basis records, holding period, account rules, employer-equity terms, and your cash needs can change the right decision.
Start with a target, not a prediction about AI stocks
Rebalancing means restoring a portfolio to a desired asset-allocation mix. It is not a forecast that artificial-intelligence companies will fall, nor a reason to sell simply because a stock has risen. Investor.gov identifies three basic methods: sell overweight assets, buy underweight assets, or redirect new contributions toward underweight assets.
Write the policy before opening a trade ticket. Include percentages for broad equities, fixed income, cash, international exposure and any other major categories. Then add a separate ceiling for AI exposure and, if relevant, a maximum for one company. Count direct shares, sector funds, employer stock, options, restricted stock units (RSUs), and overlapping holdings that give you exposure to the same AI factor.

Turn risk tolerance into a measurable constraint
A target such as “reduce AI risk” is too vague to guide tax-lot decisions. A usable rule might say that no single company may exceed a stated percentage and that all AI-related holdings must remain below another stated percentage. The numbers are personal: they should reflect your time horizon, emergency reserves, ability to withstand a drawdown, and need for portfolio income.
Set a review band or calendar as well. A band tells you when a holding is far enough from target to justify action; a calendar sets a recurring review date. Either approach is more systematic than changing the allocation after a dramatic headline or rally.
Map every account before deciding what to sell
Make one inventory that includes taxable brokerage accounts, traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401(k)s and other employer plans. Add accounts held by a spouse, outside retirement plans and employer equity. A portfolio can look diversified when each account is viewed alone while the household remains heavily exposed to the same AI companies or factor.
Recommended Free Tools
| Account or holding | What to record | Rebalancing implication |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable brokerage | Shares, tax lots, acquisition dates, basis, unrealized gain or loss and state-tax residence | A sale can realize a gain or loss; lot selection and holding period affect the result. |
| Traditional IRA | Current allocation, available investments and distribution plans | Investment earnings and gains generally are not taxed until distribution, so trades can be useful for rebalancing when the plan and overall allocation permit. |
| 401(k) | Fund menu, contribution rate, employer match and current holdings | Elective deferrals and investment gains generally are not federally taxed until distribution; redirecting contributions or exchanging funds may reduce taxable-account sales. |
| Roth IRA | Holdings, contribution history and withdrawal objectives | Include it in the household allocation map and confirm the tax treatment of any proposed withdrawal or transaction with your adviser. |
| Employer stock, options or RSUs | Vesting dates, exercise terms, basis and trading restrictions | These may have additional tax and concentration rules not addressed by a simple stock sale. |
IRS guidance says traditional IRA earnings and gains generally are not taxed until distribution, and 401(k) elective deferrals and investment gains generally are not federally taxed until distribution. That tax deferral does not make every investment choice suitable: the plan menu, required distributions, future withdrawals and your desired asset mix still matter. Losses in retirement accounts generally cannot be claimed as capital losses because those accounts already receive favorable tax treatment.

Use cash flows before realizing gains
Direct new contributions, dividends and bonus cash to assets below target. In a 401(k), changing the allocation of new payroll contributions may be enough to correct drift without selling taxable shares. In a brokerage account, reinvest dividends into underweight holdings rather than automatically buying more of an already oversized AI position.
This approach does not eliminate concentration immediately, and it may create tracking error while the portfolio moves toward its target. It does, however, reduce the number of appreciated shares that must be sold and therefore can lower the immediate tax bill. Keep enough cash for near-term spending; a tax-efficient trade that forces an untimely sale for living expenses is not efficient in practice.
Build a tax-lot sale plan for taxable accounts
Before selling an AI-heavy position, create a lot-level schedule. Do not rely on the account’s default “sell” setting if you have a choice of lots.
- Export the records. For every lot, list the number of shares, acquisition date, cost basis, current value and unrealized gain or loss.
- Classify the holding period. Mark each lot as short-term or long-term under the applicable rules. A lot’s holding period can materially change the tax result.
- Rank possible sales. Consider selling loss lots first, then lots with smaller gains, then lots whose sale best reduces your concentration. A low-basis lot may produce the largest gain but could also be the lot that removes the most risk.
- Estimate taxes before trading. Project federal and state consequences using your filing status, expected income and other realized gains or losses. Investor.gov warns that rebalancing can trigger tax consequences.
- Check the replacement asset. Decide what will receive the proceeds and assess its correlation with the AI exposure you are reducing. Replacing one concentrated technology position with a highly similar fund may not accomplish diversification.
- Save confirmations. Keep trade confirmations, basis records and the rationale for the transaction. Sales and basis information generally flow into Form 8949 and Schedule D reporting, as described in IRS Publication 550.
IRS Publication 544 explains that sales are reported and that capital-loss deductions and carryovers have limits. Your broker’s displayed gain may not include every basis adjustment, so reconcile records after corporate actions, transfers or inherited shares.

Compare the main ways to reduce AI concentration
| Method | Immediate tax effect | Risk and implementation considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Sell the full excess now | Can realize short-term and long-term gains or losses in the current tax year; exact federal and state cost depends on your facts. | Fastest risk reduction, but the largest chance of a concentrated current-year tax bill and market-timing regret. |
| Sell gradually | Spreads realized gains across tax years; it does not guarantee a lower total rate. | Can manage the tax burden while reducing risk, but leaves exposure in place during the schedule. |
| Use new money and dividends | No sale-related gain on the cash flow itself. | Usually the simplest first step, but progress depends on contribution size and the size of the overweight. |
| Rebalance in a traditional IRA or 401(k) | Investment gains generally remain tax-deferred until distribution under the account rules. | Limited by the plan’s investment menu and by the need to keep the total household allocation appropriate. |
| Harvest suitable losses | Losses can offset realized gains, subject to IRS limits; an individual’s net capital-loss deduction against other income is generally capped at $3,000 per year, or $1,500 for married filing separately, with carryovers. | Requires careful replacement-asset and wash-sale monitoring across all accounts. |
| Gift appreciated shares | May avoid selling the donated shares first; deduction and carryover rules apply. | Only fits a genuine charitable plan and requires eligibility, holding-period, valuation and substantiation checks. |
Also compare trading fees, fund expenses, advisory fees, liquidity needs, tracking error and the correlation of the replacement asset. A tax saving is not a benefit if the new holding leaves the same downside risk or cannot be sold when you need cash.
Use tax-loss harvesting deliberately
Tax-loss harvesting means realizing an investment loss to offset realized gains, often while replacing the position with an investment that maintains broad market exposure. It is not a reason to hold an unsuitable asset merely to create a deduction. First determine whether the loss lot and the replacement fit your written allocation.
Know the annual deduction limit
IRS Publication 544 states that an individual’s net capital loss deduction against other income is generally limited to $3,000 per year ($1,500 if married filing separately), with unused amounts carried over under the applicable rules. Losses can therefore be valuable even when they cannot all be used in the current year, but they are not an unlimited offset against salary or other income.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAvoid wash-sale surprises
IRS Publication 550 covers basis, holding periods, Form 8949 and Schedule D reporting, and wash-sale rules. If you buy a substantially identical security during the relevant wash-sale window, the loss may be disallowed and its basis consequences can follow the replacement shares. Check purchases in every brokerage account, IRA, 401(k), automatic dividend-reinvestment program and spouse account; an overlooked recurring purchase can defeat the intended harvest.

Investor.gov notes that tax-loss harvesting depends on the investor’s circumstances and may implicate wash sales. Keep a written record of the sale date, replacement decision and the date on which you can safely restore the intended exposure under your adviser’s guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce a winning concentration in stages when risk warrants it
Northern Trust Asset Management’s Tax-Aware Investing Playbook observes that “Gradually diversifying concentrated holdings can help reduce risk while managing the associated tax burden.” A staged schedule can spread realized gains across tax years, coordinate sales with years when income is lower, and use losses elsewhere to offset gains from trimming the concentrated position.
Do not let tax management become an excuse to retain an unacceptable risk. Set a maximum interim weight and a deadline for reaching the target. If a single AI company dominates the household balance sheet, a sharp decline could cost more than the tax saved by waiting. Conversely, selling everything in one day may create an avoidable tax spike and leave you without a plan for reinvestment.

Review unrealized losses in unrelated holdings before each planned sale. Realizing a suitable loss in the same tax year as a gain can reduce net taxable gains, provided the replacement does not violate wash-sale rules and the resulting portfolio still matches your target. Do not sell a diversifier solely for its loss if doing so creates a new concentration or abandons a holding you still need.

Consider charitable gifts of appreciated securities
If charitable giving is already part of your plan, a direct gift of appreciated shares or a contribution to a donor-advised fund can reduce an AI concentration without first selling the shares. Section 170 provides percentage limits for charitable contributions of capital-gain property and allows certain excess amounts to carry forward for up to five succeeding taxable years.
Eligibility, the holding period, fair-market-value documentation, substantiation and deduction limits must be checked before transferring securities. Confirm that the recipient can accept the asset, that the transfer is completed correctly, and that the deduction fits your filing situation. A charitable gift should be motivated by the charitable objective; it is not a substitute for a gift you cannot afford.
Handle employer equity and derivatives separately
AI exposure may sit inside employer stock, options or RSUs rather than ordinary brokerage shares. Vesting, exercise, withholding, trading windows, blackout periods and basis rules can change the tax result. A complete rule set for these instruments is not provided here, so obtain plan-specific and tax advice before exercising, selling or donating them.

Include unvested or unexercised awards in your risk calculation even if they are not yet available to sell. A future vesting event can increase concentration just as you are trying to reduce it. Coordinate the vesting calendar with your contribution plan and any staged-sale schedule.
A practical implementation checklist
- Write target percentages and a maximum AI and single-company weight.
- List every household account, employer award and overlapping fund exposure.
- Identify underweight assets and redirect contributions, dividends and bonus cash to them.
- In tax-deferred accounts, review exchanges or contribution allocations permitted by the plan menu.
- For taxable holdings, export lot-level basis, dates, gains and losses.
- Classify lots by holding period and estimate federal and state tax before placing an order.
- Decide whether a staged sale, loss harvest or charitable gift fits your risk and tax objectives.
- Search all accounts for substantially identical purchases before realizing a loss.
- Choose a replacement asset that actually lowers concentration and preserves needed liquidity.
- After settlement, reconcile basis records, update the household allocation and document the next review date.
When to involve a tax professional
Get advice before trading if you have multiple states, recently transferred or inherited shares, large short-term gains, carryforward losses, employer equity, options, RSUs, a planned charitable transfer or a near-term distribution from a retirement account. Ask the adviser to model both the immediate tax and the risk of keeping the concentrated position. Tax rules vary by filing status, state, holding period, basis and account type, so a strategy that is efficient for one investor can be costly for another.
Goldman Sachs Asset Management reported in December 2025 that a modeled tax-loss-harvesting example for a high-tax-bracket U.S. large-cap 60/40 portfolio showed a potential annual increase of 10 basis points (0.10%) in after-tax expected returns. That is a model result under stated assumptions, not a guaranteed return or a forecast for an AI portfolio. Use it as context for evaluating implementation costs, not as a promise that harvesting will pay off.
