When one investment grows faster than the rest, compare your current percentages with your intended target before selling anything. If the target still fits your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance, rebalance to bring risk back toward that mix—not to chase the recent winner. Use new contributions, dividends or withdrawals first when practical; sell part of an overweight position only after considering taxes, fees and account type.

What outperformance does to your portfolio

“Outperformed” means an investment or asset category increased in value faster than other holdings. Because portfolio percentages are based on current market values, the faster-growing holding becomes a larger share even if you have not traded.

Investor.gov gives a simple illustration: an investor chooses a 60% stock target. After stocks rise more than the other holdings, stocks represent 80% of the portfolio. The investor can sell some stocks, add money to underweighted categories, or combine both approaches to move back toward the intended mix.

This drift changes the portfolio’s exposure and therefore its risk. Rebalancing restores alignment with a plan; it does not guarantee higher returns, identify the next winning asset or improve every future outcome.

First decide whether the target allocation is still right

There are two separate decisions. The first is whether your investment plan remains appropriate. The second is how to correct drift if it does.

Keep the target when your circumstances are unchanged

If your goals, financial situation, investment horizon and tolerance for losses are substantially the same, a fast-rising category is not, by itself, a reason to raise its target weight. Selling a portion of an overweight holding can return the portfolio to the risk level you originally accepted.

Change the target when your life or plan has changed

Investor.gov says an allocation may warrant review when goals, time horizon, risk tolerance or financial circumstances change. For example, money needed soon may call for a different mix than money invested for a decades-away goal. Changing a target is a change to the investment plan, not a reaction to a short period of relative performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down the reason for any new target before trading. Otherwise, a temporary market move can look like evidence that the plan itself needs to be rewritten.

Should you sell your winners?

“Selling winners” is not automatically right or wrong. First ask whether the position is overweight relative to the policy you still intend to follow. If it is, selling part of it can reduce concentration and restore the planned risk. If it is not overweight, selling solely because the price rose is a performance call, not rebalancing.

Next compare the available methods. Contributions, dividends, interest and planned withdrawals may move the mix without realizing gains. A partial sale may be enough when a complete reset would create unusually high taxes or fees. A full sale and purchase may be reasonable when the drift is substantial and the account costs are modest. The decision should follow the target and the account’s facts, rather than a belief that the winner must soon fall.

Also distinguish a single security from a broad asset category. A fund can be within its category target while one company or sector inside it creates an unintended concentration. Review the underlying exposure and your total holdings across accounts before deciding how much to sell.

Measure the drift before placing an order

  1. List every holding and account. Record the current market value, asset category and whether the account is taxable or tax-advantaged. Include cash and any fund or stock that creates a concentrated position.
  2. Calculate current weights. Divide each holding’s value by the portfolio total. A $24,000 stock position in a $60,000 portfolio is 40%.
  3. Compare each weight with its target. Subtract the target percentage from the current percentage. A current 40% weight against a 30% target is 10 percentage points overweight.
  4. Check the whole portfolio, not just one account. A position that looks small in an individual account may be large when workplace, retirement and taxable accounts are viewed together.
  5. Separate market drift from a changed objective. Decide whether the difference came mainly from price movement or from a deliberate change in your plan.

Percentages should be compared with percentages: a 5-percentage-point difference means, for example, 35% versus 30%, not “5% more money.” Use the same asset-category definitions for both the current portfolio and the target; otherwise, a category can appear out of balance simply because holdings were classified differently.

Choose a way to move back toward target

Approach What you do Main trade-off
Sell and buy Sell part of an overweight asset and use the proceeds to buy underweighted categories. Corrects drift directly, but may create transaction costs and taxable gains in a taxable account.
Direct new contributions Send ongoing deposits to the categories below target instead of buying more of the winner. Can reduce drift without selling appreciated holdings, but depends on the size and timing of contributions.
Use dividends and interest Route portfolio distributions toward underweighted categories when your account permits that choice. Uses ordinary cash flows and can reduce trading, but distributions may be too small to close a large gap quickly.
Fund withdrawals from the overweight When taking money out, consider selling from categories that exceed target. Can improve the mix while meeting a withdrawal need; the sale can still have tax or fee consequences.
Rebalance partially Correct the largest deviation or move partway toward every target rather than resetting every category immediately. May limit taxes and costs, while leaving some residual drift.
Revise the target Adopt a different intended mix because your goals, horizon, finances or risk tolerance changed. Changes the investment plan; it should not be justified solely by a recent winner.

Investor.gov and Vanguard describe these as choices rather than a single best method. Evaluate how close each option brings you to the intended risk, its tax and transaction effects, available cash flows and how easy it will be to repeat consistently.

How to rebalance with new money first

  1. Set your target percentages and identify the categories below target.
  2. For each new contribution, direct the purchase toward the most underweighted category, subject to your account’s available investments.
  3. Reinvest dividends and interest in underweighted categories instead of automatically adding to every holding in proportion to its current size.
  4. Recalculate the portfolio after deposits and distributions have posted.
  5. Continue until the remaining drift is acceptable under the process you selected.

This approach avoids selling existing appreciated positions, but it is gradual. A small contribution cannot quickly correct a large imbalance, and a falling underweighted asset can change the calculation before the next deposit.

Check automatic settings after making the change. A recurring purchase or dividend-reinvestment instruction that still sends money to the outperforming holding can undo the adjustment. If contributions arrive in more than one account, coordinate the instructions so the combined portfolio—not just one account—moves toward target.

How to rebalance by selling and buying

  1. Determine the dollar value needed. Multiply the portfolio total by each target percentage to find the target dollar amount. The difference between current and target value is the approximate amount to move, subject to cash, fees and market changes.
  2. Choose the sale deliberately. In a taxable account, review lots and cost basis. Vanguard suggests considering shares with a higher cost basis when appropriate to help limit taxable gains; your broker’s lot-selection settings and tax rules matter.
  3. Place the sale and purchase orders. Confirm the security, quantity, account and order type. Prices can move between orders, so the final percentages may not be exact.
  4. Buy the underweighted categories. Use the proceeds according to the target rather than automatically buying whichever asset recently fell the most.
  5. Record the decision. Save the target, date, amounts, account and reason. A record makes the next review a process instead of an emotional reaction.

There is no requirement to make an all-or-nothing reset. A partial sale can address the most material overweight while preserving cash or reducing the immediate tax impact.

When several categories are underweight, rank them by the size of the gap and the role each plays in the target. Do not let the order of execution change the intended allocation. Recheck the total after all trades settle, because price movement and order timing can leave a small residual difference.

Taxes, fees and account location

Investor.gov cautions that rebalancing can trigger transaction fees or tax consequences. A taxable brokerage account and a tax-advantaged account can produce different results, and the treatment depends on jurisdiction, holding period, cost basis, account rules and other facts. The available guidance does not provide enough information to calculate an individual tax bill or a tax rate.

  • Review unrealized gains and losses before selling.
  • Check commissions, spreads, fund transaction fees and any account-specific charges.
  • Use contributions, dividends, interest and withdrawals to reduce avoidable sales when practical.
  • Consider a partial adjustment if a full reset would create disproportionate costs.
  • For large gains, concentrated holdings or complex accounts, ask a qualified tax professional how a proposed trade would be treated.

Tax considerations should influence the method, not silently change the target risk. Avoid keeping an unsuitable allocation solely to postpone a tax bill; weigh the potential cost against the risk created by the overweight position.

Do not assume that moving the same investment between accounts produces the same result everywhere. Confirm whether a proposed transaction is permitted in the specific account, whether a distribution is generated, and how your institution handles settlement and reinvestment. These operational details can affect timing even when the target percentages are clear.

Set a review schedule or drift threshold

Vanguard describes two common process choices: reviewing on a calendar and reviewing when an allocation moves beyond a chosen threshold. Its guidance says annual rebalancing is optimal for many investors and illustrates a 70/30 portfolio reviewed after a drift of 5 percentage points. That 5-point example is not a universal rule, and neither a calendar nor a threshold guarantees a better result.

Calendar-based review

Choose a recurring date, such as once each year, calculate the actual weights and decide whether any correction is warranted. A predictable date is easier to follow than checking after every market move.

Threshold-based review

Choose a percentage-point or relative threshold in advance. Review when a category crosses it, then apply the same tax and cost checks. A threshold can reduce unnecessary trades, but a very wide one may allow risk to drift substantially before action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combined review

Some investors check on a calendar and trade only when a category also exceeds the selected threshold. This creates a regular checkpoint without turning every small fluctuation into an order.

Whichever method you choose, avoid reacting to daily price changes. The useful discipline is to compare actual allocation with target at defined intervals and follow the same decision rules.

Record the date, threshold and action you chose. A written rule helps distinguish a planned rebalance from a last-minute response to a headline. Review the rule itself when your goals, horizon, financial circumstances or tolerance for losses change.

Worked example: a 60/40 portfolio

Suppose a $100,000 portfolio starts with a 60% stock target and a 40% bond target. Stocks rise faster and the current value becomes $80,000 in stocks and $20,000 in bonds. The portfolio is now 80/20, not 60/40.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sell-and-buy correction: The 60% stock target on $100,000 is $60,000, so approximately $20,000 of stock value would be moved to bonds before fees, taxes and market movement.
  • Contribution correction: New deposits can be directed to bonds until the percentages move closer to target. The amount and timing of deposits determine how long that takes.
  • Partial correction: An investor could move less than $20,000 to reduce the largest part of the drift while limiting immediate costs.

The 60%-to-80% figures are an illustrative example from Investor.gov, not a forecast or a recommended allocation. The appropriate target depends on the investor’s circumstances.

If the investor contributes $5,000 before trading, the target dollar amounts must be recalculated using the new total. Directing that contribution to bonds would reduce the gap without requiring a $5,000 sale of stock. This illustrates why the timing of cash flows matters: the right trade amount changes as deposits, withdrawals and market prices change.

Common mistakes when winners dominate

Chasing the recent winner

Increasing a category solely because it recently performed well changes the plan after the fact. Rebalancing is intended to manage risk and maintain alignment with goals, not to time the market.

Treating every deviation as urgent

Small movements may not justify a taxable sale or a spread. Apply the review process and threshold you selected instead of trading on headlines or a single volatile session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the portfolio-wide picture

Several funds can hold similar securities, and an employer plan can duplicate a taxable-account exposure. Review underlying categories and total exposure rather than relying only on fund names.

Forgetting cash flows

Automatic purchases, dividend reinvestment and withdrawals can either reduce or increase drift. Include them in the plan and check whether your account is sending cash to the intended categories.

Assuming exact percentages are possible

Prices change while orders execute, and contributions or distributions may not divide cleanly. “Toward target” is often more realistic than an exact percentage at every moment.

Confusing a target change with a rebalance

Raising the stock target because stocks rose is not the same as restoring a 60% target after stocks became 80%. Label the decision you are making and document the reason so a temporary result does not become an accidental policy.

A repeatable rebalancing checklist

  • Confirm the target allocation and why it still fits.
  • Aggregate all relevant accounts and calculate current percentages.
  • Identify the largest overweights and underweights in percentage points and dollars.
  • Check taxable status, cost basis, fees and available cash flows.
  • Decide whether contributions, distributions, withdrawals, partial trades or a full trade best fit the situation.
  • Place only the orders required by that decision.
  • Document the date, target, trades and any assumptions.
  • Review again on the chosen calendar or when the chosen threshold is reached.

When to get individual advice

General allocation guidance cannot determine the right target or tax action for a particular person. Consider professional advice before a large sale, a concentrated employer position, a complex multi-account portfolio, a major life change or a transaction with substantial unrealized gains. Bring the professional your target policy, current holdings, account types, cost bases, expected cash flows and planned withdrawals.

What rebalancing can and cannot do

Rebalancing can bring a portfolio closer to its intended allocation and a more comfortable level of risk. It cannot ensure that the asset sold will not keep rising, that the asset purchased will outperform, or that the next review will show a gain. Vanguard states the purpose plainly: “The purpose of rebalancing is to manage risk, not maximize returns.” Investor.gov similarly explains that rebalancing prevents one or more asset categories from becoming overemphasized and returns the portfolio toward a comfortable level of risk.

Use those limits to judge success. A sound rebalance is one that follows an appropriate plan, accounts for costs and taxes, and remains practical to repeat—not one that happens to predict the next market move.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I rebalance my portfolio when some investments outperform others?

Compare each holding’s current percentage with its target. If the target still fits, direct new contributions, dividends and interest to underweighted categories, and sell part of an overweight position only as needed after checking taxes and fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I sell my winning investments?

Sell only when the position is above its intended weight or your plan has changed. A recent gain alone is not a reason to sell or to increase the target for that asset.

Can I rebalance without selling and paying taxes?

Often, at least partly. Use new contributions and portfolio distributions for underweighted categories, and consider funding withdrawals from overweighted assets. These methods may take longer and cannot eliminate every sale.

How often should I rebalance?

Choose a repeatable calendar review, a drift threshold, or a combination. Vanguard discusses annual reviews and illustrates a five-percentage-point trigger for a 70/30 portfolio, but neither is a universal requirement.

What is the difference between a percentage point and a percent?

A move from a 30% target to a 35% actual weight is five percentage points. It is not a claim that the holding is 5% larger in dollar terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do taxes make rebalancing a bad idea?

Taxes and fees should affect the method and timing, but they do not automatically make an unsuitable allocation appropriate. Compare a partial trade or cash-flow approach with the risk of leaving a material overweight in place; seek qualified tax advice for substantial gains or complex accounts.

The Bottom Line

Compare your actual portfolio with the target that still fits your goals, horizon and risk tolerance. Use contributions and distributions first when practical, then make the smallest tax- and cost-aware trades needed to bring risk back toward target. Rebalance on a consistent schedule or threshold, not because a recent winner feels irresistible.
