When growth stocks and bonds fall at the same time, do not automatically abandon your stock-and-bond strategy. First verify that your target allocation still fits your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance and income needs. Then compare your current percentages with that target and apply the rebalancing rule you chose in advance. Use new contributions where practical; sell overweight holdings only after considering taxes, trading costs and account rules.

A joint decline is a reason to check your plan, not by itself a reason to rewrite it. Rebalancing restores a selected risk mix; it does not predict when either asset will recover or guarantee a profit.

Why growth stocks and bonds can fall together

The traditional stock-and-bond relationship is not permanently fixed. A common inflation shock can push expected policy rates and market yields higher. Higher yields generally reduce the present value assigned to long-dated corporate cash flows, which can pressure growth-oriented shares. At the same time, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall when market interest rates rise.

This was visible in 2022. Vanguard described that year’s global sell-off as unusual for the degree to which stocks and bonds declined together. Its explanation connected the move with inflation-fighting rate increases: higher rates pressured equity valuations while also pushing bond prices lower. Vanguard reported that a typical 60/40 portfolio fell about 16% in 2022; that figure describes its example, not every portfolio using a 60/40 label.

“Growth stocks” are not a separate asset class in the SEC material on allocation and diversification. Individual companies and funds can respond differently to rates, earnings expectations, credit conditions and sector exposures. The rate-sensitivity explanation is therefore a general mechanism, not a prediction for a particular security.

What the historical evidence does—and does not—show

Vanguard’s historical correlation analysis used S&P 500 and U.S. Treasury 10-year total returns from January 1, 1990, through September 30, 2021. Its longer-term measures remained negative through that period, while shorter rolling windows varied substantially. Vanguard also modeled a 5.7% inflation path versus a 2% base case over the following five years in a 2021 analysis and said a meaningfully positive long-term stock-bond correlation would require inflation substantially above its base case. That was a model and forecast made in 2021, not a current prediction.

Those dated observations cannot establish the stock-bond correlation in October 2026. Correlations can change with inflation, growth, monetary policy, valuations and market structure. A single episode, including 2022, is not proof of a permanent new regime.

Start by testing the target allocation

Rebalancing only makes sense relative to a target. The SEC’s definition is concise: “Rebalancing is bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix.” Before placing an order, decide whether that original mix still belongs to your current financial plan.

Review the circumstances that justify a strategic change

  • Goal: Has the purpose of the money changed, such as from long-term growth to near-term spending?
  • Time horizon: Is a major withdrawal, tuition bill or retirement date closer than when the target was set?
  • Risk tolerance and capacity: Can you financially and emotionally withstand a larger decline, or has your income or emergency reserve changed?
  • Income needs: Do you now need a more reliable stream of cash, or can you tolerate more price volatility?
  • Account and tax circumstances: Have you changed employers, account types, tax residency or withdrawal plans?

If one of these factors has materially changed, reassess the strategic allocation before calculating a trade. The SEC says allocation depends on time horizon and risk tolerance and may need to change after a change in financial situation or goal. If those facts have not changed, recent performance alone is not a sound reason to chase the asset that just led or to eliminate the one that lagged.

Separate allocation risk from security risk

A portfolio can have the intended stock percentage and still be poorly diversified. A “bond” holding may have substantial interest-rate, credit, issuer or maturity exposure. A stock sleeve may be concentrated in one sector, country, company or growth factor. Rebalancing percentages cannot repair concentration that the target itself permits, so inspect what each holding actually owns.

Measure drift before you trade

Calculate each sleeve as a percentage of the portfolio’s current market value, then compare it with the written target. Use market value, not the amount originally invested. Include relevant stock funds, individual shares, bond funds, individual bonds and cash according to the allocation policy you use.

Worked calculation

Assume an illustrative target of 70% stocks and 30% bonds. After a joint decline, the account is worth $100,000: $74,000 in stocks and $26,000 in bonds. The stock weight is 74%, four percentage points above target; bonds are 26%, four points below. The portfolio has drifted, but whether that crosses your action threshold depends on the rule you selected.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.

If the target were 60/40 and the same account held $74,000 of stocks and $26,000 of bonds, the drift would be 14 percentage points in each direction. That is a materially different risk position even though the dollar balances are identical. Always calculate percentages against the current total.

Use a written trigger

Investor.gov describes two common approaches:

  • Calendar review: inspect the allocation on a regular schedule, such as every six or 12 months, and rebalance if needed.
  • Threshold review: act when a sleeve moves a preset number of percentage points away from target.
  • Combined rule: check on a schedule and trade only when a threshold is breached.

Vanguard illustrates a five-percentage-point threshold in a 70/30 example. That is an example, not a universal prescription. Calendar rules are easy to administer; threshold rules tie action to the size of the risk change. The available guidance does not establish one universally optimal band or schedule, and Vanguard cautions against both extremely frequent and extremely infrequent rebalancing.

Choose the least costly way to restore the mix

Once your rule calls for action, compare the available methods on speed, taxes, trading costs and whether they actually restore the intended risk allocation.

Method How it works When it can help Important checks
Direct new contributions Send new deposits to the underweight sleeve instead of buying the overweight sleeve. Taxable and retirement accounts receiving regular savings, when drift is modest. Contributions may be too small to close a large gap quickly; confirm the resulting percentages.
Redirect recurring contributions Temporarily change payroll or automatic-investment instructions toward the underweight. Investors with predictable ongoing deposits who want to avoid selling. Review the instruction after the target is restored so future deposits do not create a new drift.
Sell overweight and buy underweight Reduce the sleeve above target and purchase the sleeve below target. Large drift, no sufficient incoming cash, or a need to restore risk promptly. Check commissions, spreads, fund fees, tax lots, realized gains and account restrictions first.

The SEC identifies all three approaches. No single method is best for every account or tax jurisdiction. A tax-advantaged account may allow exchanges without the same immediate tax treatment as a taxable account, but the specific rules depend on the account and jurisdiction.

A practical order of operations

  1. Write down the target and the trigger. Record each sleeve’s target percentage, the review date or threshold, and which accounts are included.
  2. Update the valuation. Use current balances and include cash or other categories according to your investment policy.
  3. Identify the smallest correction. Direct new money first if it can bring the portfolio back within the permitted band in a reasonable period.
  4. Estimate the trade. If the portfolio total is T, the current weight is C, and the target weight is R, the approximate dollar adjustment for that sleeve is T × (R − C). Recalculate after price movement and account for cash already available.
  5. Check implementation costs. Review transaction charges, bid-ask spreads, fund exchange rules, tax-lot choices and possible realized gains.
  6. Place the trade or change the contribution instruction. Use the order type and settlement process permitted by your provider; do not assume every fund or account trades on the same timetable.
  7. Verify the post-trade weights. Confirm that the account, not merely the individual order, now fits the policy band.
  8. Document the reason. Record the date, allocation before and after, method used and any tax or cost decision.

Taxes, fees and account mechanics

Selling an overweight holding can create a taxable gain or loss in a taxable account. The result depends on the security’s cost basis, holding period, tax-lot selection, local rules and your overall tax position. A loss may also interact with loss-restriction rules. Do not infer a tax result from the percentage drift alone.

Trading costs can include commissions where applicable, bid-ask spreads, fund transaction fees, redemption charges and the opportunity cost of being out of the market while an order settles. Check the provider’s current schedule and the fund’s prospectus or account agreement. In workplace plans, exchanges may be limited, delayed or subject to plan-specific restrictions.

Tax and fee trade-offs can make a contribution-based correction preferable when the drift is small, but a large drift can leave the portfolio exposed to more risk than the target while you wait. If the amount is material, review the decision with a tax professional or fiduciary adviser who can apply your account and jurisdiction details.

Recheck diversification inside the stock and bond sleeves

The SEC recommends diversification both across asset categories and within them. After a joint decline, inspect the risks that a simple stock-versus-bond percentage hides.

Stock sleeve checks

  • Look for concentration in one company, sector, country, market-cap segment or growth theme.
  • Check whether several funds own the same large positions, creating overlap.
  • Distinguish a broad-market holding from a narrow growth or technology-focused holding before treating both as equivalent “stocks.”

Bond sleeve checks

  • Interest-rate sensitivity: Longer maturities usually react more to changes in yields than shorter maturities.
  • Credit exposure: Corporate and lower-quality bonds carry issuer and default risks that differ from high-quality government debt.
  • Issuer concentration: Diversifying issuers can reduce dependence on one borrower.
  • Maturity structure: A ladder or varied maturity profile can spread reinvestment and rate risk, subject to the design of the portfolio.
  • Inflation exposure: Fixed payments can lose purchasing power when inflation rises; the appropriate response depends on the goal and the instruments used.

Vanguard’s diversification guidance emphasizes that bonds and cash can play stabilizing roles but still carry their own risks. The label “bonds” alone does not tell you how much duration, credit or inflation risk the sleeve contains.

How to handle a 70/30 portfolio after a simultaneous decline

Use the following decision path rather than reacting to headlines:

  1. Confirm the plan. If the 70/30 target still matches your horizon and risk tolerance, keep it as the reference point. If your circumstances changed, establish a new target before trading.
  2. Measure the current mix. Suppose the portfolio is 74/26. The four-point drift is below a five-point example threshold, so a policy using that threshold would not require an immediate sale. A calendar-only policy might still permit a review and contribution adjustment.
  3. Apply cash flows. New deposits can be directed to bonds until the account moves toward target, provided the resulting risk remains acceptable during the transition.
  4. Escalate only when the rule requires it. If stocks reach 76% and the written policy is a five-point band, the threshold has been crossed. Estimate the correction, then compare contribution-only and sale-and-purchase methods after taxes and fees.
  5. Check the contents. If the stock sleeve is concentrated in rate-sensitive growth companies or the bond sleeve is unusually long in maturity, decide whether the target needs a separate diversification review rather than treating the issue as a percentage problem.

When not to rebalance immediately

  • The target is under review: Do not trade first and decide your long-term allocation later. Establish the goal, horizon and risk parameters first.
  • The drift is inside your band: A policy should define what happens when no threshold is breached. Waiting can be the disciplined result.
  • A sale would create an avoidable tax bill: Consider directing new money or using an account with different tax treatment, if appropriate and allowed.
  • You are reacting to a forecast: Rebalancing is not a bet that bonds or growth stocks will rebound next month. Avoid changing the rule because one asset recently outperformed.
  • The trade would leave a new concentration: Moving from one narrow holding to another does not create meaningful diversification.

Build a rule you can follow in a volatile market

Write a one-page investment policy or account note containing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the target percentage for stocks, bonds, cash and any other approved categories;
  • the review cadence, threshold or combined trigger;
  • which cash flows will be directed to an underweight;
  • the circumstances that justify changing the target, such as a goal, horizon, income or risk-capacity change;
  • the accounts covered and any tax or trading constraints;
  • the diversification limits for issuers, sectors, maturities and credit quality;
  • the person or professional responsible for reviewing the decision.

Review the policy at the stated interval, not every time markets move. Keep records of balances, calculations, orders, contribution changes and the reason for any strategic change. This creates an auditable process and reduces the temptation to make repeated, expensive switches after a joint stock-and-bond decline.

Key takeaways

  • Stocks and bonds can fall together when inflation and rising rates pressure both equity valuations and fixed-rate bond prices.
  • The 2022 experience, including Vanguard’s roughly 16% decline for its typical 60/40 example, is historical context rather than a forecast for every portfolio.
  • No source cited here establishes a current October 2026 stock-bond correlation.
  • Keep a target that still fits your circumstances, measure drift against that target and follow a preselected calendar or threshold rule.
  • Use contributions where practical, and weigh taxes, fees, spreads and account restrictions before selling.
  • Inspect diversification within both sleeves; “stocks” and “bonds” are not single, uniform risk categories.
