Rebalance after a large gain or loss by first checking that your target allocation still fits your goals, then measuring the drift across every account. Restore the mix with the least costly method that works: redirect contributions, dividends, and withdrawals; buy underweight assets; or sell part of an overweight position when the risk reduction justifies taxes and trading costs. Rebalancing is a risk-control decision, not a forecast that the market will reverse.
What changes when your portfolio has a big gain or loss?
Asset prices change the percentages in your portfolio even when you do nothing. If stocks were 60% of a portfolio and rose sharply, they could become 80% of the account, an example used by Investor.gov. The account is worth more, but its risk is also different: a larger share now depends on the performance of stocks.
A market decline creates the opposite problem. An asset class can fall below its target, leaving the portfolio less exposed to it than your plan intended. Selling solely because prices fell can turn a temporary decline into a permanent loss; buying solely because prices rose can increase concentration. The decision should follow your written allocation and current circumstances.
Fidelity defines rebalancing as buying and selling investments to keep a portfolio in line with an investment strategy. The objective is to return risk exposures to the levels you selected, not to identify the next winning asset.

Step 1: Reconfirm the target allocation before trading
Your old target may no longer be appropriate. Investor.gov advises reviewing allocation when your risk tolerance, financial situation, time horizon, or goals change. A new job, a planned home purchase, a shorter retirement horizon, a larger emergency reserve, or a change in debt can all alter how much volatility you can accept.
Questions to answer
- What percentage belongs in stocks, bonds, cash, and any other assets?
- When will you need the money, and how much of it must remain liquid?
- Could you tolerate a substantial temporary decline without abandoning the plan?
- Have your income, dependents, debt, emergency savings, or retirement date changed?
- Are any individual holdings or sectors large enough to create concentration risk even if the broad asset-class percentages look correct?
Write the target in percentages before looking at proposed trades. If the answer to these questions changes the target, update the plan first; do not rebalance toward an allocation you no longer want.
Step 2: Measure drift across the whole portfolio
List every relevant account before calculating percentages: taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace plans, and cash held for investment. A stock position that appears acceptable in one account may be excessive when combined with the same fund elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCalculate each current weight
- Add the current market value of all holdings in the asset class.
- Divide that value by the current value of all included accounts.
- Compare the result with the target percentage.
- Record the dollar amount needed to reach the target, considering contributions and withdrawals already planned.
For example, suppose a $100,000 portfolio was designed for 60% stocks and 40% bonds. After a stock rally, it is 80% stocks ($80,000) and 20% bonds ($20,000). Returning to the target requires a $20,000 shift in the simplified example, but the actual trade depends on new contributions, taxes, account location, and the values of every other holding.
Check more than broad categories
Also review regional exposure, company size, sectors, individual securities, and cash reserves when those are part of your plan. A portfolio can be 60% stocks yet still be dominated by one employer, industry, or company. Rebalancing the broad stock percentage does not automatically remove that concentration.

Step 3: Choose how to restore the mix
The SEC identifies three basic methods. You can sell overweight assets and buy underweight assets, buy underweight assets with new money, or direct future contributions toward underweight areas. Combining methods often reduces turnover.
Method 1: Sell overweight assets and buy underweight assets
This is the most direct approach. It restores the target immediately, but a taxable sale of an appreciated holding can realize a capital gain. Selling may also incur commissions, bid-ask spreads, fund transaction costs, or other account charges. Investor.gov specifically recommends considering transaction fees and tax consequences before choosing a method.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this method when the drift is large, the risk is unacceptable, or new cash will not correct the allocation in a reasonable period. Decide which tax lots to sell, estimate the realized gain or loss, and place the corresponding purchase orders only after checking settlement, liquidity, and trading restrictions.
Method 2: Buy underweight assets with new money
Direct a lump sum, bonus, or other investable cash to the underweight category. This can move the allocation toward target without selling an appreciated position. It works best when you have cash available and the underweight is not so large that waiting would leave you exposed to more risk than you can accept.
Method 3: Redirect regular contributions
Change the investment elections for payroll deposits, automatic transfers, or recurring purchases so that new money goes to underweight assets. This is gradual rather than immediate, but it can reduce taxable sales and trading activity. Recheck the result after each contribution cycle because market movements can change the required amounts.

Use dividends, withdrawals, and partial sales deliberately
Instead of automatically reinvesting every dividend in the same holding, direct it to an underweight category where your account permits that choice. Planned withdrawals can come from overweight assets. If a sale is necessary, a partial sale can reduce risk while spreading taxable realization over time. Vanguard describes partial rebalancing as one way to limit taxes and transaction costs; it is a planning option, not a universal rule.
| Implementation choice | Immediate allocation change | Typical tax and cost consideration | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell overweight and buy underweight | Yes | May realize gains or losses and incur trading costs | Drift is large or risk must be reduced now |
| Invest new cash in underweight assets | Yes, to the extent of the cash | Avoids selling the appreciated holding; purchase costs still apply | You have investable cash available |
| Redirect future contributions | Gradual | Usually avoids a sale; timing depends on contribution size | Cash flow is regular and drift is manageable |
| Combine contributions, dividends, withdrawals, and selective sales | Partly immediate and partly gradual | Lets you choose which transactions create taxable events | You want to reduce turnover while correcting meaningful drift |
How to handle a large gain or concentrated winner
A gain can make an account look successful while increasing its downside exposure. Compare the position with both the target asset allocation and any maximum position size in your plan.
First, test non-sale options
- Send new contributions to underweight assets.
- Use dividends from the winner to purchase underweight holdings where available.
- Use planned withdrawals from the overweight position.
- Stop adding to the concentrated holding until other assets catch up.
These approaches can reduce concentration without immediately realizing the entire unrealized gain. They are not substitutes for selling when the position remains dangerously large.
If a taxable sale is needed
Estimate the gain for each tax lot, the holding period, and all transaction costs before placing an order. A partial sale can move the portfolio closer to target while limiting the amount realized in one period. Decide the dollar amount from the risk analysis, not from a desire to sell simply because the price has risen.
Keep the allocation decision separate from a market prediction. A winner can continue rising after you trim it, and it can also fall sharply. The reason to sell is that the position no longer fits the plan or risk capacity.

How to rebalance after a large loss
Start by checking whether the target itself is still appropriate. Fear after a decline can make a long-term investor sell at the least favorable moment, while an unchanged target may call for buying an underweight asset.
When buying the fallen asset is consistent with the plan
If the asset is below target, your liquidity needs are covered, and your risk capacity has not changed, directing new money or a portion of the portfolio toward it can restore the intended mix. Use the written policy rather than headlines or a short-term prediction.
When the loss reveals a changed situation
If your time horizon, income, emergency reserve, or ability to tolerate volatility has changed, revise the target instead of automatically buying more. A loss does not by itself prove that the asset should be sold, but a changed objective can justify a different allocation.
Tax-loss harvesting
A realized loss may offset capital gains and, under applicable rules, may offset a limited amount of other income. Fidelity notes this potential benefit, but the result depends on current tax law and your complete tax situation. Review tax lots, replacement investments, the timing of purchases in every account, and wash-sale exposure with a qualified tax professional before selling for tax purposes.

Before any taxable trade, work through this list:
- Identify the account and the exact security or fund to sell.
- List available tax lots and their cost basis, acquisition dates, and unrealized gains or losses.
- Estimate the realized result if only part of the position is sold.
- Check whether other realized gains or losses elsewhere in the account set change the tax effect.
- Review wash-sale exposure from purchases, automatic reinvestment, workplace plans, and other accounts.
- Estimate commissions, spreads, fund charges, and any applicable account fees.
- Confirm that the replacement purchase still matches the target and does not create a new concentration.
- Ask a qualified tax professional about current rules before acting on a large or complex transaction.
Tax treatment differs by jurisdiction and account type. A tax advantage should not override a risk problem, and a desire to avoid every tax bill should not leave the portfolio materially outside its intended allocation.

Costs, timing, and execution discipline
Rebalancing can create taxes and transaction costs, so compare the cost of acting with the risk of remaining off target. Vanguard emphasizes that rebalancing is about staying aligned with long-term goals, not timing the market. Do not wait for a predicted top or bottom.
Reduce unnecessary turnover
- Use cash flows first when they can correct the drift soon enough.
- Prefer broad, liquid holdings already approved by your plan.
- Use limit orders only when you understand the execution trade-off; do not delay a necessary risk correction over a small price difference.
- Check whether automatic dividend reinvestment is sending money back into the overweight holding.
- Document the reason for each trade so a later price move does not cause an impulsive reversal.
Use a threshold you can follow
The cited guidance does not establish one universal percentage band or calendar. Choose either a calendar review, a drift band, or a combination that you can apply consistently. For example, you might review on a set schedule and act whenever an asset class exceeds the tolerance written in your policy. The specific threshold should reflect the portfolio’s volatility, taxes, costs, and your ability to monitor it; consistency matters more than copying someone else’s number.
Self-directed, target-date, and robo-adviser approaches
Automation changes who performs the monitoring and trades; it does not remove investment risk. Target-date funds generally adjust allocation and rebalance over time. Schwab says its Intelligent Portfolios technology, with human oversight, monitors portfolios daily and rebalances as needed. Schwab also warns that diversification, asset allocation, automatic investing, and rebalancing do not ensure a profit or prevent losses in declining markets.
| Approach | Target setting | Drift monitoring | Tax handling | Customization and control | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-directed portfolio | You set and document the allocation | You choose the review schedule and trigger | You select tax lots and decide which taxable trades to make | Highest control and customization; requires discipline | Account coverage, order costs, records, and your written policy |
| Target-date fund | Allocation follows the fund’s glide path and target date | Fund generally handles allocation changes and rebalancing | Tax result depends on the account and fund distributions | Less control over the underlying allocation | Glide path, holdings, turnover, and fund expense schedule |
| Robo-adviser | Set through the service’s questionnaire and portfolio choices | Software monitors according to the service’s rules; some services add human oversight | May offer account-aware tax features; confirm the exact service and account coverage | More automation, with customization limited by the available portfolios | Drift trigger, advisory and fund fees, tax rules, linked accounts, and override options |
Whichever approach you use, confirm that all accounts are included. An automated service cannot correct assets it cannot see, and a target-date fund does not automatically coordinate with unrelated holdings in another account.
Worked decisions after a gain or loss
Example: stocks rise above target
A household with a 60/40 target finds that stocks now represent 80% of its combined accounts. It first confirms that the 60/40 target still fits its time horizon. It then checks whether regular contributions and planned withdrawals can reduce the 20-percentage-point drift. If not, it estimates gains and costs for candidate tax lots and considers a partial sale, followed by a purchase of the underweight asset. The household records the trade and the remaining drift rather than trying to guess where stocks will go next.
Example: stocks fall below target
Another household with the same target sees stocks fall below 60%. It checks emergency cash, near-term spending, and risk capacity. If those remain adequate, it directs new contributions toward stocks or makes a planned purchase under the policy. If the household can no longer tolerate the volatility, it changes the target instead of buying automatically.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Rebalancing one account in isolation: include the entire investment picture.
- Using the old target without checking life changes: confirm goals, horizon, liquidity, and risk tolerance first.
- Selling every winner at once: estimate taxes and consider contributions or partial sales.
- Ignoring automatic reinvestment: dividends can keep adding to an overweight asset.
- Buying after a fall without a liquidity check: do not invest money needed for near-term obligations.
- Trying to time the market: a rebalancing rule is more reliable than a headline-driven forecast.
- Assuming automation guarantees safety: automated rebalancing cannot prevent losses.
- Overlooking wash-sale exposure: review purchases across all accounts before realizing a loss.
Keep a one-page rebalancing policy
Record your target percentages, acceptable drift, review date, permitted investments, cash reserve, order of operations, and tax-review process. State whether new contributions, dividends, and withdrawals are used before sales, and who must approve a taxable trade. Update the document when your goals or financial situation change.

A policy turns a large gain or loss into a checklist: confirm the target, measure the whole portfolio, choose the least disruptive method that still controls risk, review taxes and costs, execute, and record the result. That process keeps the portfolio connected to your long-term plan without pretending that any allocation can guarantee profits or prevent losses.
